.
(Psssst: over here. Yeah, you.) Didja know the Guide brings you the news of a variety of radio shows, available on the web, that feature acoustic performance-interviews -- along with all those live acoustic shows in Southern California you can go see in concert halls, outdoor amphitheatres, park band shells, nightclub and coffeehouse gigs, and more -- under the lights and under the summer stars -- from Santa Barbara to south Orange County! The acoustic open mics are in here, too, along with workshops and other events for artists. Well, basically, It’s ALL in here, just waiting for you.

THE STORY OF WHY AUGUST IS AUGUST

August gets its name from Roman Emperor Augustus, and there’s quite a tale to that. He was Julius Caesar’s adopted nephew and heir, and his name was Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. Then he became the first Roman emperor to receive the title “Augustus,” when the Roman Senate bestowed that title on him.
+
The word Augustus meant “Reverend” in Latin. The senators even changed the name of the sixth month of their calendar, from Sextilis (that meant sixth, and presumably, not something sexual), to August, in honor of their “reverend” ruler. Apparently all that wasn’t enough of an honor for Augustus, because he stole a day from February to give his month 31 days -- so it would be as long as July -- putting him on an equal footing with the month that honored none other than his original benefactor, Julius Caesar.
+
And you though modern politicians (and some modern reverends) had out-of-control egos.

NO MATTER

No matter
how hot-burning
It is
outside

when

you peel a

or
cut deep into
a fresh, ripe watermelon

you can

WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! .
Sat & Sun, Aug 1 & 2; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
Annual “CRAWFISH FESTIVAL” with GENO DELAFOSE, RODDIE ROMERO, DIKI DU, and many other stars of the Cajun / zydeco music world, at Rainbow Lagoon Park, Long Beach.
+
Saturday’s lineup:
+
SATURDAY includes Grammy nominees RODDIE ROMERO & THE HUB CITY ALL-STARS, and ARMAND ST. MARTIN AND HIS BAYOU BOHEMIANS, plus THE ROCKIN’ JAKE BAND, BENNIE & THE SWAMP GATORS, ROYAL GARDEN DIXIELAND BAND, A.J. GIBBS, and THE HIGH STEPPERS NEW ORLEANS BOOGIE BAND. Both days bring appearances by THE LOUISIANA TO LA (“LA o LA”) SOCIETY SECOND LINE DANCERS, led by LEWIS HOLT & THE NEW ORLEANS HIGH STEPPERS. You are invited to join the Conga line, and throughout the day and night, partake of the dance instruction by A.J. Gibbs, teaching “Zydeco to Myzeto.” Both days, the Children's Stage operates noon to 6 pm, with storytelling, magicians, “inflatable impressions,” bounce houses, and more.
+
A.J. GIBBS, “The Mydeco Dance King,” interacts throughout the day. He tells us, “You are guaranteed to have fun with my style of Zydeco dancing of which I call ‘MYDECO.’ You will learn the basics and how to add freestyle moves to your dancing style. Adding hip hop, break dance, salsa, or whatever to the feel of music.”
+
BENNIE & THE SWAMP GATORS play 3-5 pm. One of Southern California’s hottest Cajun / zydeco bands is, says Zydeco Brad, “one of the hottest in the nation. Once you hear the Swamp Gator’s infectious music you will find it hard to stay in your seat — grooving to the Zydeco beat.”
+
THE ROCKIN’ JAKE BAND plays 5-7 pm. Rockin Jake, from New Orleans, plays blues harp, and is five-time winner of the “Best Blues Harmonica” award in the “Best of the Beat,” New Orleans Music Awards.
+
ARMAND ST. MARTIN AND HIS BAYOU BOHEMIANS play 7-9 pm. It’s an all-original piano-pumping party featuring St. Martin's sizzlin’ 88’s in the tradition of Professor Longhair, Fats Domino and Dr. John. “Non-stop Entertainment!” raves the L.A. Times, in a rare mention of Americana music.
+
RODDIE ROMERO & THE HUB CITY ALL STARS play 10-11 pm. “When you're raised on the zydeco and Cajun sounds of Southwest Louisiana and the groove of New Orleans, you can't go wrong,” observes Zydeco Brad, editor of the Cajun / Zydeco Events Newsletter. He adds, “Roddie Romero & the Hub City All Stars are sure to pack the dance floor with their unmatched blend of South Louisiana rhythm and soul.”
+
Sunday’s lineup:
+
SUNDAY includes two Grammy nominees, GENO DELAFOSE & FRENCH ROCKIN’ BOOGIE, and LISA HALEY & THE ZYDEKATS, plus DIKKI DU & THE ZYDECO KREWE, BONNE MUSIQUE ZYDECO, A.J.
+
BONNE MUSIQUE ZYDECO plays 1-3 pm. Led by B.J. DECULUS, a guest multiple times on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” the band’s name Bonne Musique Zydeco (or as their fans call ‘em, BMZ), literally means "good zydeco music." They are a 6-member band specializing in the Creole music of Louisiana and East Texas to create a blend of music designed for dancing.
+
+
DIKKI DU & THE ZYDECO KREWE play 3-5 pm. He has incorporated his musical heritage with his own experience to create one of the most innovative zydeco groups around. He takes songs from classic zydeco and turns the inside out with fresh and funky renditions.
+
LISA HALEY & THE ZYDEKATS play 5-7 pm. They’ve performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where her album “King Cake” had an exclusive, five-week world premiere en-route to a Grammy nomination. As Zydeco Brad (Cajun / Zydeco Events Newsletter editor) writes, “when GRAMMY Nominee Lisa Haley’s soaring, compelling ‘cornbread’ voice holds court in the ‘One World Swamp,’ worlds collide!” They were featured performing with LITTLE RICHARD and playing zydeco on the NBC-TV series, “Las Vegas,” in the “Mardi Gras” episode.
+
GENO DELAFOSE & FRENCH ROCKIN’ BOOGIE perform 7-10 pm, bringing a “Herculean testament of souped-up, rocked-out, nuclear-combustin’ zydeco that’s invigorating all the way through” He is, indeed, “one of the reigning dance floor monarchs.”

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is a high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston. It’s the zany 1920’s-era musical that’s took Broadway by storm. Set in New York City in 1922, it tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life, where she finds herself in a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. This cast features the best performers in Temecula and surrounding areas.

3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

PAUL ZOLLO is a renowned music journalist and book author, along with being a musician who is well-known on the L.A. scene. In a recent review of his album “Orange Avenue,” Louisiana writer Michelle Williams wrote that he "has the most unique style I think I have ever heard... and he sings his heart out on every song." A Trough Records artist, Paul Zollo has long been known in the L.A. music circuit as an "enchanting and lyrical songwriter," according to Campus Circle magazine. A Chicago native, he performed in Steve Goodman´s club Somebody Else´s Troubles when he was still a teenager, toured Russia and Poland during the Cold War as a guitarist with a musical theater troupe, and ultimately moved to L.A. where he was the leader of the band, The Ghosters. Paul has collaborated with many great songwriters: Darryl Purpose, with whom he’s written several songs, including "Crooked Line," the title song of Darryl´s 2003 album; Steve Allen; Severin Browne; Michael Silversher; James Coberly Smith; and Bob Malone. Malone recorded Zollo´s song "Halloween" for a special seasonal EP release. Zollo’s first solo album, “Orange Avenue,” was released on Windyapple Records and features a duet with the legendary Art Garfunkel on the John Fante-inspired "Being In This World." Called, "one of the world’s most insightful storytellers" by the great Chad Watson, Zollo is presently at work on his first album on Trough, which is being co-produced by Billy Salisbury

ALLAN COMEAU tells of one of the songs they’ll play, “the debut of ‘Hard Times Ahead,’ with Leo on keys and sharing vocals and Johnny on bass - a must see.” He adds, “After the show, Paul will perform and videotape his new song, ‘Clown Jam at the Moose Lodge,’ bringing in a bunch of clowns and giving us all an opportunity to clown in on the taping. He’ll have make-up available for those who do not already look like clowns.”

9 pm-1 am WUMBLOOZO at Joe's Great American Bar & Grill, 4311 W Magnolia Bl, Burbank; 818-982-5585; www.joesgreatbar.com. The bluesmaking band had so much fun playing a birthday show last week for band member HERBIE KATZ (aka “Dr. Fun”) that they decided a repeat is in order tonight. They tell us, “Doc had an ear to ear grin all night. Lots of birthday kisses and wishes. The band was on fire fueled by the new faces on the dance floor. At one point Michael asked Stan for some preaching music on the organ. Stan obliged and Michael started testifying like a Southern Baptist preacher and quickly had the crowd shouting “Doctor” in unison. This turned into a fiery new song written especially for Doc’s birthday. For those of you who were there, we thank you deeply for attending. If you want more, we're doing it all over again. If you missed it, come to Joe's and join in the festivities. You never know what's going to happen at a Wumbloozo show, from special guests to mystery dancers. A.J. GIBBS, “The Mydeco Dance King,” plays 1-3 pm. He tells us, “You are guaranteed to have fun with my style of Zydeco dancing of which I call ‘MYDECO.’ You will learn the basics and how to add freestyle moves to your dancing style. LISA HALEY & THE ZYDEKATS play 5-7 pm. They’ve performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where her album “King Cake” had an exclusive, five-week world premiere en-route to a Grammy nomination. Sun, Aug 2; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 pm HOUSTON JONES returns to the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Houston Jones, a high-octane Americana quintet from the San Francisco Bay Area, the band performs a mostly original repertoire that ranges from bluegrass and folk to blues and gospel. Featuring the mile-a-minute flatpicking of guitarist Glenn “Houston” Pomianek (voted "best guitarist for 2009" by the Northern California Bluegrass Society); the band delivers the honky tonk vocals and guitar of Travis Jones; there’s Henry Salvia on keyboard and accordion; Chris Kee on standup bass, cello and acoustic guitar; and, Peter Tucker on drums and percussion. Tonight, they are joined by special guest Chojo Jacques on fiddle and mandolin.
+
One reviewer wrote, “Houston Jones seamlessly blends original folk, bluegrass, gospel, jazz and blues styles.” Jim Lee, writing in Dirty Linen Magazine, says "No one delivers the goods quite like Houston Jones....Houston Jones remains one of the West Coast's most talented and entertaining bands."
+
It's worth noting that Chojo, Chris, Peter and Glenn are all alumni of the WAYBACKS, and that Houston Jones were voted the “best discovery” of the Fall 2005 Strawberry Music Festival. A quote from CGB regular, Peggy: ”As for Houston Jones, they are electric! I was bouncing throughout their entire set! I love 'em - first saw 'em at your place as backup to Chojo Jacques, and then saw them at FAR-West Folk Alliance - their harmonies are creative and tight, their musicianship is stellar, they're funny, and I loved 'em.” More at www.houstonjones.com. Michael’s “WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour” is a multi-media celebration of grassroots Americana music, heard worldwide in radio syndication (except in L.A.) and seen and heard on the web. Every Monday evening, Michael and his guests perform folk and bluegrass, and the show explores songwriting, new artists, literature, worldwide radio, television and concerts. WoodSongs is the world first multi-camera, weekly series broadcast on the Internet. Online viewers worldwide can watch the behind-the-scenes production heard by over 900,000 radio listeners on over 491 radio stations each week. Here’s the weekly schedule, adjusted to Pacific time: 4 pm - watch the 60 minute show live as it happens; 5:03 pm - join the audience as they record the promo for the just-completed show; 5:05 pm - enjoy the guest artist's encore performances, not heard on the radio broadcast.
+
Each show is later archived on line, for free 24/7 viewing in various media formats, and available streaming and as a podcast.

8 pm JIM CURRY with ANNE CURRY and flautist DIANE IRELAND bring his “JOHN DENVER TRIBUTE” show at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Jim notes, “The music of John Denver is so nice with the flute.” He performs aboard cruise ships and was the singing voice of John Denver in the TV movie about the late author of “Rocky Mountain High” and dozens of other wonderful songs. Anne Curry plays mandolin and guitar and sings harmony.
+
Here’s the long version:
Husband and wife team Jim and Anne Curry deliver the multi-platinum hits of the great John Denver in a fun-filled evening of singing and stories. Jim plays the guitar and sings John's songs in a crystal clear tenor. You'll be invited to sing along (don't worry, you already know the words to the songs), share in the memories, learn new songs and howl at the moon (literally!)
+
The music of the late John Denver is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time. Join acclaimed performer Jim Curry for this tribute to the music of one of the most beloved singer/songwriters ever to grace the stage.
+
Tribute artist Jim Curry's voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie “Take Me Home: The John Denver Story,” has performed Denver's music in sold-out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today's top performer of Denver's vast legacy of multi-platinum hits. Jim's uncanny ability to mirror John's voice and clean-cut look takes you back to the time when "Rocky Mountain High" "Sunshine" "Calypso" and "Annie's Song" topped the charts, and his popular music had the heartfelt message of caring for the earth and caring for each other. Denver's message is worth repeating: "Be kind to the Earth and to each other. " More at www.jimcurrymusic.com. Tix, $18.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
