Acoustic Americana Music Guide, Sep 26 through 30

.
==================================
.
Weekend update of the GUIDE, with added events through SEPTEMBER’s end
.
…and it brings to mind that wonderful old Stan Laurel bit (Laurel & Hardy) in which Stanley is reckoning the passage of time: “Septober, Octember, No Wonder…”
+
The editor still can’t use the computer as his recovery continues to progress from eye surgery (but he does supply quotes like the one above). This update is made possible by the combined efforts of many, in many places. We have formatted everything the editor had in the Guide’s database, and combined all of it. We hope to post October’s events soon.
+
The editor thanks everyone for the cards and letters, and for whatever well-wishes await in the mountain of emails that he can't yet read. A few at a time, we are starting to read them to him (there are over 2,700 there, waiting!)
.

.
Check out Larry Wines’ September column in FolkWorks. It’s available free online at www.folkworks.org/content/viewcategorycur/89 and it’s a time of remembrances for the late musicians MIKE SEEGER and DAVID CARRADINE, and for WOODY GUTHRIE’S guitar.

ACOUSTIC AMERICANA
MUSIC GUIDE
.
SEPTEMBER 26 through 30, 2009 EDITION
.
.
LOTS of music continues at the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona: check our special sections at the beginning of each day’s listings. Plus (as always) there’s an almost incomprehensible number and variety of live acoustic performances all across the L.A. region. And we tell you about all those acoustic festivals, everywhere. AND radio shows featuring live performances and interviews with acoustic musicians that are available on the web. So go enjoy some wonderful live acoustic music!
.
September’s live acoustic performances continue, at concert halls, coffeehouses, clubs, bars, parks, band shells, the L.A. County Fair, and theaters and amphitheaters indoors and out, and all of it awaits you right here at
http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com
.
(Yes, you can give your friends the url, even if it reveals they don’t need to call you anymore to learn what’s happening.)
.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

News of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show is happening faster than we can report it. But we will, soon!

COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
Yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!
+
PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) We don’t update the Myspace site very often anymore. It’s really just an archive of old news at www.myspace.com/laacoustic

Sat, Sep 26, on broadcast & web radio:
6-8 am “ALIVE & PICKING” hosted by MARY KATHERINE ALDIN on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles, worldwide at www.kpfk.com. As you may know, we do not usually list radio shows UNLESS they feature live acoustic performances. This show does not. But L.A. remains the least diverse radio market in the US (even though it’s the largest US radio market), so any show that spins folk-Americana CDs in this town is cause for celebration. And, KPFK has vacillated on whether or not Mary Katherine’s show will be aired regularly, or at all. Please take note, and let KPFK hear your preferences.

Free entertainment, tips only, in a great place, with nice people and good music. Vin Fiz Flyer tells us, “Old town Glendora is a kinda sleepy small Midwest town plopped into Southern California. These early morning concerts sound like a wacky idea, but they’re well-attended by musicians as well as music lovers! A car club meets at the Cafe next door every Saturday for breakfast, and they park their assorted ‘babies’ out front for you to peruse too. Come on by and start your weekend out right.” Check with venue to see if there is a concert scheduled for today.

Sat, Sep 26:
7 pm CLAUDIA RUSSELL & THE FOLK UNLIMITED ORCHESTRA at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. They “traverse the vast American musical landscape, stopping at wondrous landmarks along the way—from the Smoky Mountains to Smokey Robinson. Lesser singers might stumble, or sound fake and uninspired. But Russell and her band possess an uncanny ability to get behind each song and make it their own.” – Mike Rossney, Coat to Coast Arts, Sargentsville ME.
+
Claudia Russell has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where she proved her prowess as a soulful singer and talented songwriter (think Dolly Parton meets Aretha Franklin). She weaves folk, blues, rock, country and traditional music into an eclectic sound that is all her own. Claudia is a two-time Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk finalist and was named by Boston Folk Radio station WUMB as 2000's New Artist of the Year. She'll be playing with her husband Bruce Kaplan on mandolin and guitar, Mark Petrella on upright bass and Carl Byron on keyboards and accordion. Sing Out magazine says “Claudia Russell is a great live performer and this showcase proves that. Her band -- let’s just say they’re hot. Connect them to the power grid and they’d light up a medium-sized town. Live Band Tonight is as musically solid as they come and in the world of obligatory live CDs, it shines. – Rich Warren, Sing Out, Fall 2007.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Claudia is a wit with bubbling, driving personality and a delight to behold both as a singer and as a stage star. She is the real, complete thing and a steal at this price.” More at www.claudiarussell.com. Tix, $18.

LESLIE PERRY has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease} Dave Morrison says, “Typical of Leslie, he is determined not to feel sorry for himself. Indeed, it didn't take him long to decide a benefit was in order. So here are the details. Join us if you can. Donations will given to the ALS Association. Come Together to Fight ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).”
+
Your editor reminds you that ALS, which has recently stricken our friend Leslie Perry, struck ERIC LOWEN or LOWEN & NAVARRO a few years ago, and Eric described it in detail on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Too many talented people are robbed of so much of life, and we are robbed of their talents, from serious and, so far, incurable diseases that include ALS. The ALS Association is working to find a cure, while helping those and their families who are afflicted with it.

(949) 842-2227. (One of two venues used by the series.)
+
From the Vancouver Island MusicFest to the Kerrville Folk Festival, from the Kennedy Center in D.C. to St. Paul's Cathedral in London and the Spandau Theatre in Berlin, Germany, audiences praise their sound. You’ve heard their music on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”
+
This duo of JOE SCOTT & HANNAH ALKIRE have combined their musical talents to create an exciting acoustic renaissance sound. Joe plays an instrument he invented: the double-neck guitjo, a custom acoustic guitar with two necks, built exclusively for him. This one-of-a-kind instrument has incredible range and tonal qualities, sounding at times like a piano, dulcimer or beautiful harp. Combine that with Hannah's stunning tone and impeccable cello-playing, and you have the ingredients for some very moving music. Swallow Hill Music Association says, "...an evening of brilliant instrumentality."

8 pm BRIAN FINNEGAN & WILLIAM COULTER play Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City; www.boulevardmusic.com; 310-398-2583. Venue’s web site has a helpful local dining guide.
+
It’s been an amazing week of Celtic music in L.A., and it continues unabated tonight.
+
Irish flute and whistle wizard BRIAN FINNEGAN and Grammy Award-winning guitarist WILLIAM COULTER are both veterans of the traditional music world. Brian spent the last 12 years touring and recording with the legendary Anglo-Irish band Flook, who won the Best Group at the BBC Folk Awards in 2006. William has been exploring traditional music for over 20 years and has performed with some of the best musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. He won a Grammy in 2004 for his solo guitar contribution to "Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar."
+
Scotland on Sunday calls Brian Finnegan “a thrilling talent, marvelous technical dexterity, bold musical imagination and urgent tone combining in playing of breathtaking suppleness and delicacy.” Meanwhile, ' Mike Meyer, KKUP-FM , cites “William's advanced sense of guitar melody, texture and resonance makes him one of the best ever from the Bay Area.'
+
Brian and William met at the Boxwood flute camp in Nova Scotia during the summer of 2008, where both were teaching. A concert was in the works and the lads enjoyed playing together so much they talked about the possibility of touring as a duo. When Flook disbanded amicably at the end of 2008, the time seemed right for Brian and Bill to join forces. These two virtuosos play original and traditional tunes with masterful technique and fluidity. Their dynamic energy and artistry is an experience not to be missed. More at www.finnegancoulter.com/. 8 pm CARL VEHEYEN & STEVE TROVATO at The Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com. It’s a double-bill of guitar legends. Carl Verheyen and Steve Trovato (Twice Guitars).. two of LA's most amazing guitarists, have been delighting audiences for years. Carl was called "One of the best Guitarists in the world" by Guitar Player Magazine and Steve Trovato earned the title of "Superpicker" from Vintage Guitar Magazine. Together their styles combine to form a musical genre all its own: part blues, jazz, rock 'n roll, country, rhythm & blues, soul, rockabilly, bluegrass and even gypsy! High level performing at its finest.
+
CARL VERHEYEN is lead guitarist from the band SUPERTRAMP (since 1985) and one of L.A.'s top session guitarists, winner of 1996 Guitar Player Magazines' best studio guitarist poll by its readers. Carl comes down to the crossroads to do a hot set of acoustic and electric guitar. He has played on over 200 TV shows and a ton of movies, including his featured solo part on the recent "Ratatouille."
+
Plus Steve Trovato, multi-styled great player and author of over 20 books, he’s performed with everyone from CHET ATKINS to ALBERT LEE to ROBBEN FORD. For aastarters, Steve Trovato has written 22 guitar method books for Warner Brothers and Hal Leonard Publications, and completed 7 guitar instructional videos for REH Publications and Music Sales in London, England. He is best known as a world class country guitarist, though he plays and is equally proficient at many popular guitar styles. Steve is a professor in the Studio Jazz Guitar Department at the University of Southern California and maintains a high visibility career as a recording artist and studio musician. He is a former Musician’s Institute department manager, and he conducts clinics and master classes around the world. Currently, Steve is touring with former Supertramp guitarist Carl Verheyen. Steve is Director of Instruction for the new web based guitar educational site called www.iperform3d.com. Steve is responsible for creating all lessons at iPerform3D. His goal is simple: making sure iPerform delivers the best possible lessons available anywhere. Steve’s most recent CD is “Steve Trovato, Country Jazzmaster” (2007). Steve is now working on a new instructional book / CD / Crossover Pick combination called “Universal Picking Technique”. He is joined in this effort by AFG President Greg M. McCabe’s booker, Lincoln Myerson, tells us, “When it comes to writing songs about ghostly marines, strippers with broken arms, and other dark, strange subjects, Ridgway is the best there is. Through the musical pictures that he's been painting for 30 years- first with Wall Of Voodoo, the seminal LA art rock band he fronts, and more recently with a collection of solo efforts that have solidified his stature as one of this city's finest musical figures- his songs carry listeners to the edge of their seats, while perfectly balancing his sometimes-untrustworthy narrator's voice from the twilight zone. Kicking off this evening's proceedings will be Toronto-based Doug Paisley, whom we first saw here opening for Bonnie "Prince" Billy (as one half of Dark Hand and Lamplight), and whose latest album is one of our favorites of the year.” Tix, $17.50.

1:30-4:30 pm BENEFIT CONCERT for ARTIE COLATRELLA, with LISA NEMZO, LEE CURRERI, BILLIE BURNOR, COLLEEN STEWART, PETE SNELL doing poet readings from Artie's collection, KELLY MITCHELL, and other special guests, at The Talking Stick, 1411c Lincoln Bl, Venice 92091; www.thetalkingstick.net; 310-450-6052.
+
ARTIE COLATRELLA, a longtime Venice Beach resident, has been battling renal cancer. Artie had a kidney removed two years ago, and this past March was diagnosed with the same cancer, but now, in his lung. Organizers say, “Due to our country’s health care system, even though he needs chemo, for nearly 6 months, he’s not had the necessary treatment. Medi-cal is still pending after 6 months. He’s been out of work this entire time, living on $200 a month while his bills pile up. He’s had his phone turned off, his unemployment benefits cut off, and is waiting treatment Oct 2nd. Hopefully. We have put together this benefit to raise money to help Artie ease the road. He needs all of us to join together as community and as friends and help him through this time.”
+
Artie has been a professional songwriter, and is the author of two books of poems, "Ghosts of Closure", and his current, "The Empty Aisle" which awaits printing and publishing. Artie has worked with many artists over the years, including Frank Stallone (Stayin' Alive, Waking Up), Nicolette Larson (Real Love, Open All Night), Lisa Nemzo (Baby Don't Hurt Me, Out of Desire), Lee Curreri (Blue to Black), and Billie Burnor (Cowboy Angel), Shaundra Beri (I Remember Love), and others. His songs were featured in the TV shows "Party of Five" and "Felicity." He booked talent at the Blue Lagune Saloon, and The Venice "Beachhead" recently published one of Artie's poems, "Fingerprints." One of Artie's wishes is that his recent book of poems "The Empty Aisle" be published. Five Limited autographed copies will be on sale at the benefit. Lisa Nemzo says. “We're asking you bring friends, bring yourselves and give generously if you can. Your presence is what is going to mean the most to Artie.”

5 limited copies of Artie's current book of poems, "The Empty Aisle" on sale. Questions, call or email Billie Burnor at themustangs1987@aol.com or Lisa Nemzo email, lisa@lisanemzo.com. Sun, Sep 27; first of TWO different matinees today at CGB:
2 pm EVAN J. MARSHALL plus THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
“Evan J. Marshall lives at the intersection of folk and classical, where mandolin and fiddle virtuoso meets innovative craftsman, where the impact pf his dazzling musicianship cannot be reconciled when you see only one performer on a stage where the ears are convinced there must be an entire string band.” – Larry Wines, Acoustic Americana Music Guide.
+
Evan’s accomplishments are legendary among other artists of the plucked string: The late Chet Atkins called him "one of the few great musicians of our time." He’s performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where he dazzled the listening audience. He is a member of the RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE, and whenever they play, popular demand requires that EVAN J. MARSHALL plays a solo set. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest mandolin virtuosos ever, and his fiddle playing is dazzling. He possesses an uncanny duo-style solo mandolin technique that the Raleigh-Durham Independent called "superhuman," the Washington Post labeled "truly dazzling," and the Fresno Bee called "mind-boggling." Besides his "obvious virtuosity" (Pasadena Star News), he has "in color and texture . . . a stunning mastery of interpretation" (St. Paul Pioneer Press). Performing by himself, he creates the sound of a virtuoso mandolin ensemble, and takes his audience with him into a fascinating and unique musical world. Don Stiernberg says he's "the Michael Jordan of the mandolin."
+
plus, THE BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS Bob Stane adds, “We have sneaked the Bohemian Soul Rustlers into a few shows, without reporting their booking, and they are just a bit of wonderful. With several stints on our stage, they delight with song and comedy. You will be on your feet cheering for an encore. Lots of stuff from the 1960s and a grab bag of fun. Got a beret? Be cool. At the end you will be saying, ‘who are those guys?’ Fun, musical, and just perfect. Remember when that wasn't a ridiculous concept? Remember when you believed that a raised voice and a willing heart could actually help promote peace, love and understanding? Well you were right. Come on down to the show and we'll prove it together.” Matinee show, tix, $15.

Sun, Sep 27; SECOND of TWO different matinees today at CGB:
4 pm THE AMERICAN FOLKSONG EXPRESS is “a matinee of great note,” featuring ART PODELL and JACKIE DAVIDSON, original members of the famed NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS, plus BUFFALO BILL BOYCOTT, and GARY BRANDT with special guest: MICHAEL McGINNIS at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Has venue impresario Bob Stane finally gone over the edge to that big Vaudeville show in the HaHa Hotel Lounge? TWO different matinees today, plus a 7 pm show tonight? He tells us, “This is how we did it back then. Real music, a fun show, music that you wanted to listen to from folks you liked to watch. The Real Deal.”

Bob calls this “A celebration of the rich days of the ’60s when urban youth across the nation first discovered the musical miracles that could be accomplished with only six guitar lessons. Folk-music favorites mingled with some surprisingly fresh new material performed by some of the finest talent from that era. The show features music, comedy, and drama fit for the family, delivered with the same freshness as when it was first performed in the coffeehouses of yore.”

ART PODELL is a guitar and banjo pickin’ Greenwich Village “has-been” who at 70-plus, declares he’s ‘been again’. JACKIE DAVIDSON, another original NEW CHRISTY MINSTREL, the ex-wife of a famous crooner whose first name slips her mind from time to time. And yes, Art and Jackie still tour with the legendary New Christy Minstrels under the direction of Randy Sparks.
+
BUFFALO BILL BOYCOTT of Lander, Wyoming is a “Raconteur, yodeler, fiddler, the only man licensed in the state of Wyoming to carry a concealed banjo, and dead ringer for his name-sake (true artistic identity theft).
+
Plus, GARY BRANDT, probably the most well-known purveyor of the folk art in the Michigan area. Bob says, “Gary’s lack of national fame can only be attributed to the fact that he wandered away from a coffeehouse near Lake Superior on the Upper Peninsula in 1965, and only recently found his way back to his home near Flint. The American Folksong Express knew a bargain when they heard him sing, and he’s on board.”
+
“Get ready for a show that will make you tear to ‘Molly Darlin’ and roar to ‘Michael Row The Boat Ashore,’” adds Bob.
+
Why MICHAEL McGINNIS? Bob Stane, who has booked him before, many times, explains, “The ability of Michael Mc Ginnis to captivate and transform groups is magical. His enthusiasm and joy for life seems boundless, although his journey has not always been a bright one. His quest for grace has led him down many roads, and has provided a tapestry of colorful experience to draw from. During his long career as singer, songwriter, actor, poet, and storyteller, Michael performed with, and for a time, directed the music for, the internationally popular New Christy Minstrels, a group that spawned Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, and Barry McGuire. He has also toured extensively with his own band The Rodeo Gypsies, and as a single performer. Michael has seven major label recordings to his credit, and was the first artist to produce a full-length music video for EMI Video, before music video even existed. He records currently for Shadow Hills Records. Many major artists including Kim Carnes, Don Henley, Michael Mc Donald, Wayne Newton, and Captain Kangaroo have recorded his songs. As an actor he has done episodic TV, commercials, and feature films. He is a published poet, and contributes to several literary magazines.
This is a 4 pm matinee. Tix, $18.

Sun, Sep 27:
7 pm WILL RYAN & THE CACTUS COUNTY COWBOYS plus ROOBY MAGOO at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Direct from Cactus County, it’s “The King of the Radio Cowboys” and “The Band that Won the West!.” They’ve been called, “The Marx Brothers meet the Sons of the Pioneers, with sidekicks.”
+
Will Ryan is joined by funny and sly WESTY WESTHOFEN and JOHN “PRESTO” REYNOLDS, a comic genius and guitar virtuoso renowned in old time music circles. Venue impresario Bob Stane calls them,.”So funny, so musical and intelligently understated.”
+
Lead singer and guitarist WILL RYAN is the croonin’ Westerner who not only has written hundreds of cowboy songs for acts like the Okay Corral Chorale, the Oslo Mariachis and Clark Burroughs, but for a slew of imaginary characters, as well! Among them: Donald Duck, Tigger, the Muppets, Elmo Aardvark, Garfield the Cat, The Grinch and Winnie the Pooh (who actually lives under the name of Saunders). Will’s non-cowboy songs have also been recorded by the likes of the Pointer Sisters, Patti LaBelle, Joanie Sommers and Diane Schurr.
+
In the Old Days, Will opened for such folks as Rick Nelson, Bob Gibson, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Pure Prairie League and Lionel Hampton. Then Will became a Cineloquist, which is what he calls an Actor who does a lot of Voices. Soon he was heard in hundreds of animated television shows and in such popular feature films as “The Little Mermaid”, “Looney Tunes: Back in Action!” and “The Land before Time”.
+
WESTY WESTHOFEN (on bass, tuba and euphonium) joins JOHN “PRESTO” REYNOLDS (on guitar, banjo and jazzbo) as Will’s harmonious sidekicks and Instrumental Wizards. You may recall them as the front men of the Palm Springs Yacht Club, when they were a perennial opening act for the Smothers Brothers, toured the nation with Julie Andrews and made television appearances with Steve Allen.
+
Westy and Presto are the Originators and Principal Perpetrators of the musical art form known as BI-LABIAL FRICITATION. Their demonstrations of this arcane practice are a show-stopping delight. In fact, for that alone you would be well-advised to leave the hum-drum comfort of your all-too-familiar home and head over to this rare Coffee Gallery Backstage performance to be edified, stupefied, stultified and – yes, certifiably flabbergasted! Bob Stane says: “you will laugh and be amazed by their sounds and antics. Great comedy.” Oh, Will’s got a couple of RIAA Gold Records. but here’s the Big News: The band’s first Audible Records CD, “Rhythm Rides the Range!” has just gone Tin! WAHOO!
+
Plus: ROOBY MAGOO...“The Queen of Science Fiction Country Music.” From the moment Rooby sets foot on the stage, you know you’re dealing with a Star. Either that, or a sweet-sounding singer of astonishing range and a mighty fascinating case of Multiple Personality Disorder! Her command of any situation – be it a humble country tune or a dramatic first-hand account of an alien abduction – is always awe-inspiring! Rooby, who bears a striking resemblance to actress Diane Michelle, can be heard impersonating off-beat characters on such television shows as The Simpsons, Superman, Batman, The West Wing, Pinky & the Brain and the upcoming series Waffles: Gentleman Burglar. For Walt Disney Productions, she’s provided Daisy Duck’s singing voice since the Clinton administration. This is a rare chance to hear Rooby in person before she too, like Klum before her, is permanently abducted by aliens,

They have performed with numerous symphony orchestras across the country, to great acclaim. The Riders, with mandolin phenom EVAN MARSHALL (aka “Relaxin' Jackson”), are not simply included in FolkWorks magazine’s “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” feature, they are picked as THE best in the “Top Ten Live Acoustic Bands in L.A. in 2008: #1 - Riders of the Purple Sage. That notation reads, “They’re amazing and transcend their genre, as they prove when they perform with symphony orchestras. Endorsed by the widow of band founder Foy Willing, and with mandolin wizard Evan Marshall now solidly a member, they are the best acoustic band in L.A., period.” In addition, Evan Marshall is named in that same FolkWorks feature among the “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” live instrumentalists in L.A.
+
The Riders of the Purple Sage have enjoyed L.A.’s most successful monthly residency, routinely selling-out six weeks in advance. They are one of, if not "the" most historical Western band in the world, having starred in films and radio from pre-war days to the present. Today's Riders, under the leadership of CODY BRYANT, put on a show rich with old and new music. Band members are instrumental virtuosos, including five-string banjo, hot lead guitar, twin fiddles, steel guitar, upright bass, drums/percussion, steel guitar, and consummate vocals. While keeping alive the tradition of the original Riders' sound and enjoying the endorsement of SHARON WILLING, widow of band founder FOY WILLING and author of the book, “No One to Cry To,” the band continues to write and perform new material that carries on and builds upon their signature style. Adding a strong swing influence (ala Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys), their performances appeal to listeners and dancers of all ages.

Larry Wines wrote of one performance that they were “ethereal” and “orchestral,” and indeed, they often perform with symphony orchestras. Larry added in that review, “They exceeded musicianship. They exceeded their genre.” Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane adds, “You owe it to yourself to see this most amazing and amusing exhibit. Forget what you think you like and don’t like. See The Riders Of The Purple Sage.”

Tue, Sep 29, last Tue, every month:
6-8:15 pm STAN WEST at Frisella's Roastery, 179 N Glendora Av, Glendora; 626-852-1810. A bluesman from hat to boots, Stan West is, according to blues expert Bernie Pearl, one of this country's premiere slide guitarists. Vintage Guitar Magazine wrote, "Stan West knows the Blues," and Seven Days adds, "If there is any justice, Stan West would be a legend." He’s still working on that, with his new CD, “Live at Mr. Mike’s.”
+
When he played the Fret House, they noted, “Stan West is something of an institution on the Southern Californian blues scene, delighting the patrons of the area's blues clubs with his potent slide guitar riffs for around thirty years, as well as opening for artists like Bo Diddley, Johnny Winter and Robben Ford. A rather astute observer of that four-letter word called ‘life,’ Stan West knows the blues.”
+
Stan has quite a history, indeed, including performing on stage with all those luminaries, and even with Janis Joplin. In 1977, a stroke paralyzed one side of his body and robbed him of the ability to play. Overcoming that with a new and unique slide guitar style, he launched the Stan West Band in ’79. Beginning in ’83, he became proprietor of Stan’s Guitar Shop in Glendora. His previous CDs were released in ’94 and ’97. More recently, Stan was diagnosed with coronary artery disease, and has been forced to declare “no more smoke-filled clubs!” Catching Stan perform these days is a rare treat. More at www.stanwest.com. Venue offers great food, beer and wine. Stan says, “Try their tri-tip for a real sandwich treat!”

+
Los Angeles' own six-voice, a cappella, jazz, pop, rock group is a nationally acclaimed, award-winning, six-voice vocal collective. What is a vocal collective? It is what happens when you bring a group of singers together who all have extensive resumes ranging in everything from opera to rock and roll, from jazz clubs in NYC to recording studios in LA. Venue impresario Bob Stane adds, “All of these elements come together to form the creative soup that is Sixth Wave, who also have a wonderful collective wit. Not only are they funny but the like each other, which is infectious.”
+
Plus, DOWN 4 THE COUNT, a five-voice, mostly a cappella vocal jazz ensemble comprised of two men and three women. Bob Stane says, “Their specialty is swing, and boy, do they swing! Taken individually, the genres of jazz and a cappella are challenging enough; the combination of jazz harmony and a cappella singing keeps these singers on their toes – and their audiences on the edge of their seats.” Down 4 The Count performs mostly original arrangements that tend to end up on the very high and very fast side of the stylistic spectrum. Bpb Stane adds, “Few audiences forget the lush voicings of Turn Out The Stars, the self-deprecating humor of Four Sopranos, or the clever lyrics of Whirlybird - if they can understand them at a tempo of approximately 260!” Tix, $15.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you hear very little music from the acoustic genres on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
.
