Friday through the Weekend: Festivals, Concerts, Workshops, more – June 26-28, 2015

.
.
Here’s the complete edition as a “whole enchilada.” To save yourself a lot of scrolling, each section is also available at its own separate link. Might be a good idea to go that route this time around.

This weekend is just about enough to put you to sleep – to sleep at work all next week, that is, where you’ll need to go to recover from ALL THIS WEEKEND’S LIVE MUSIC!

Here’s a quick lil’ orientation, before the more formal table of contents...

NEWS FEATURES: this edition takes us PAST 100 in the last six months. There are two exceptionally good new ones today. PLUS, please take note of the third feature, being repeated. It gives you the link for the SEPARATE EDITION that catalogues all NINETY-SIX (96-!)News Features the Guide has published during these past six months, through the June 23rd edition. All that is apart from the (literally) thousands of write-ups for festivals, concerts, and music and arts events that have appeared in each edition, together with all those news features, when and where they were originally published.

FESTIVALS: it’s multiple-choice that we demystify for a happily brisk set of choices this weekend – and beyond.

CONCERTS and other arts events: there’s so much, in abundant profusion, for you to find something good any night you want to venture forth – including, well, TONIGHT. And of course, since there’s more this weekend than any one person could possibly do (unless they’ve perfected cloning), we must promise to publish all that soon for you, nice and clean, but not muddled-in now.

Let’s get started!

FROM SANTA MONICA TO CHAPEL HILL: THOUSANDS OF RECORDINGS OF LIVE PERFORMANCES BY FOLK MUSIC GREATS AT McCABE’S ARE PRESERVED IN N.C.

By Charlie Shelton (republished by permission)

McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA has seen more than 1,600 musicians perform in the store. Those live performances have produced thousands of recordings documenting the livelihood of folk music for the past 45 years.

Those recordings have now come to North Carolina. Bob Riskin, store owner, recently donated the collection to the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill.

“It was important that these taped recordings, which are old and fragile and have significant scholarly value, go to a place where they would be carefully conditioned and conserved,” Riskin said in a statement. “We did an inventory and cataloged more than 2,000 tapes. When I began to think of who should receive the gift, several knowledgeable people I respect, including my sound engineers, all said the best choice would be the University of North Carolina.”

Steven Weiss, curator of SFC, said Chapel Hill is a good home for the collection. SFC already houses hundreds of recordings of folk and roots music, but Weiss said McCabe’s collection is one of a kind.

“This collection is a national treasure that documents nearly five decades of top performers in an intimate setting,” Weiss said.

Weiss said people will be able to listen to portions of the recordings starting in September of 2016.

Riskin donated the collection of audiocassettes and open reel tapes to the SFC so it can preserve it by creating digital copies of the recordings.

The recorded performances include those by:

RAMBLIN’ JACK ELLIOT
JOHN FAHEY
JOHN HAMMOND
BILL MONROE
ODETTA
JEAN RITCHIE
DAVE VAN RONK
MIKE SEEGER
RALPH STANLEY
MERLE TRAVIS
KATE WOLF
TOWNES VAN ZANDT
DOC WATSON

It also includes live performances by Carrboro's ELIZABETH "LIBBA" COTTEN. Check out an excerpt of Cotten playing "Going Away" at McCabe’s in 1978 below.

NOTE: Cotten says she is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina when she introduces herself. Our guess is that Chapel Hill may have been a little more familiar to her audiences.

You can find recordings like these and more great collections exploring the Southern Folklife Collection at Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill.

• Our second news feature story today...

MICHELE SHOCKED BRINGS MUSIC TO THE RIVER – THE L.A. RIVER(!) SATURDAY

It's a venue along the Elysian Valley L.A. River Bike Path, and the masterful songwriter and always-full-of-surprises MICHELLE SHOCKED, plus OLLIN, are coming there to perform FREE for you. It’s called the Frog Spot - Friends of the L.A. River, at 2825 Benedict St, L.A. 90039. The music starts at 7 pm, Saturday, June 27.

The new venue is one of several that have come pretty much from nowhere along what has always been an embarrassing concrete ditch, but which is about to be transformed. The Frog Spot is open every weekend, Saturdays 8 am-8 pm, Sundays 8 am-6 pm. It’s all ages, and they have beer & wine specials.

Michelle tells us, "I’ll return for a command performance at The Frog Spot [this Saturday] and another on July 18th. I’m honored to share the stage with my new favorite East Los band, OLLIN [at 8 pm], and also rawkus bike punx PEDAL STRIKE [performing at 6 pm]."

She continues, "The Frog Spot is a pop-up project of FoLAR. The Friends of the L.A. River is a cultural institution in Los Angeles... [It] began with a visionary poet named Lewis MacAdams asking the river if he could speak for it and the river told him yes. The dream that began almost 40 years ago will come true next month when the Army Corps of Engineers undertakes to remove broad stretches of concrete that have entombed the river. An expansive bridge will be rebuilt at Sixth Street resembling a ribbon, and a bike path and green beltway will connect Angelenos to the natural beauty of the Arroyo, which Woody Guthrie describes in 'The Flood of 1934'."

She adds, "Please feel welcome to join in the daily weekday conversation or drop by if you’re in the neighborhood. Mondays at Church & State, Tuesdays at Urban Radish, Wednesdays at Daily Dose Cafe and Thursdays at The Springs. I’m on Meerkat every weekday at 3 pm for the summer, hosting a livestream. It isn’t a big production number, just a daily chat for 15-20 minutes — sometimes I sing a song, sometimes I read poems or excerpts from my unpublished manuscript, 'Bootleg This,' and yes, on occasion I opine. You can download the Meerkat app on your phone or follow via Twitter at @mshockedrox. Facebook isn’t much longer for this world, I expect, they’ve changed their rules once too often, but in the meantime, there’s a video snippet I’ve posted there."

Of course, Michelle Shocked is kinetic energy. She says, "Details are still coming in on my September tour, but it looks like it will start in France, then Portugal, Spain and swing into Italy. I’ll post the dates on my website as soon as they’re confirmed. Last but not least, I’m giddy with excitement to start rehearsals in the fall for the production of #HOPSCOTCH that will premiere with L.A.'s new opera company, The Industry. I’ve composed some music and will also be singing in a scene. How glamorous is that?! The artistic director, Yuval Sharon, is a creative mastermind, so audacious in his vision for opera and Los Angeles that the whole city, me included, is in love with him."

She's also an enthusiastic Bernie Sanders supporter. And ever the exciting performer.

Fri-Sun, Jun 26-28,
FESTIVAL,
in San Diego Co (Vista):
Annual “SAN DIEGO SCOTTISH HIGHLAND GAMES & GATHERING OF THE CLANS” at Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Dr, Vista 92084.
+
This is a big event. The main festival is Saturday & Sunday, with an opening event Friday evening. There are plenty of entertainers, Scottish-style “Heavy Athletics” competitions, celebrations and gatherings of the clans, Highland Dancing, Piping & Drumming (that’s bagpiping), Sheepdog Trials, and plenty more. It all (or a lot of it, anyway) evokes ancient feuds, misty moors, Highland spirits, the wail of bagpipes, the sweet sound of fiddles, and the magic of Scottish legends.
+
A FRIDAY EVENT HAS BEEN ADDED, with a special STORYTELLING SHOW to kick off the annual San Diego Highland Games, at 7 pm on the Beer Garden Stage at Brengle Terrace Park.
+
Each year, there’s plenty of music, beyond the featured four groups of entertainers on two stages. This year, Irish / Celtic harp master AEDAN MacDONNELL is playing both days, and judging the harp competition on Sunday. Here are the four featured acts...
+
On the Beer Garden Stage...
THE WICKED TINKERS, a longtime festival favorite, return. The Tinkers’ Aaron Shaw is an expert piper – each morning before the Tinkers play, Aaron acts as a judge for the piping competition. Aaron is joined by Keith Jones on snare and other percussion, CJ Henderson on didgeridoo and horn, and Tiki King on the big drums.
+
STAND EASY joins the Tinkers on this stage. This is their first time at this festival. Led by John McLean Allen, the group fuses traditional Celtic tunes and highland pipes with modern rock styles.
+
On the Main Stage...
HIGHLAND WAY has been a popular attraction at these games for many years, and this year they’re moving to the main stage on the athletic field. Lead singer and guitarist Brian Caldwell, a native of Glasgow, is joined by Paul Castellanos. Paul plays fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, and almost anything else with strings. They’re joined by Jim Soldi on bass, Sharon Whyte on accordion, Bob Sale on drums, and Glen Fisher on bass. Together they put a modern spin on traditional Celtic music.
+
THE BROWNE SISTERS AND GEORGE CAVANAUGH round-out the lineup on the main stage. Sisters Diane, Pamela, and Laura have been singing together since they were little, and their three-part harmony can carry you away. Their cousin George adds his rich vocals and masterful guitar to make an outstanding quartet. A truly fine act.
+
It turns out that Brian Caldwell (HIGHLAND WAY) and George Cvanaugh (BROWNE SISTERS) have been good friends for a long time, so expect some musical intermingling at some point during the weekend.
+
There’s so much to do at the Games, but be sure to reserve some time to sit and listen to the featured musicians.
+
Notes on two of the bands...
+
WICKED TINKERS – “Cask Strength Tribal Celtic Music!” Pioneers of the growing Tribal Celtic movement, the Tinkers have been playing haunting, heart-pounding bagpipes and irresistible tribal drums as a professional touring band since 1995. With the addition, several years back, of the mesmerizing drone of the Australian didgeridoo and Bronze Age Irish horn, the magic was complete. Sit back and be transported to an earlier time in Scotland and Ireland, when battle cries filled the air and strange, unheard-of creatures roamed the night. Or better yet, get on your feet and let your body move to ancient rhythms and forgotten sounds.
+
HIGHLAND WAY plays everything from high-energy festivals to those big Performing Arts Theaters from Scotland to Nova Scotia, and Ireland to California. These seasoned studio session musicians bring the same polished energy to stages around the world. With their huge repertoire they know how to tailor their performance to the audience. A native Scot with his Glasgow accent, Brian Caldwell is well known for his wonderful ability to charm any crowd while his energetic and driving rhythm guitar blends flawlessly with the rest of the band. Joining Brian are Paul Graham Castellanos - on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, Sharon Whyte - on accordion and keyboards, Bob Sale - on percussion and drums, Glen Fisher - on bass, and master of guitars Jim Soldi. Highlighting Celtic music from Scotland and Ireland, with originals and the occasional popular cover.

A “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick...

Fri, Jun 26, in Altadena:
8 pm MISS DEVON & the OUTLAW plus KRISTYN HARRIS with BROOK WALLACE, bring top award-winning Western music to the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
Western swing is the official music of Texas, and these four award-winning, high energy western music performers from Texas, have thrown in together to kick up some serious dust around the old corral. As a result, what Miss Devon & the Outlaw, Kristyn Harris, and Texas champion fiddle player Brook Wallace do is more fun than puttin' socks on a rooster.
+
MISS DEVON & THE OUTLAW are Devon Dawson and Jessie Robertson who formed their musical duo in 2007. Since then they have won many awards. Devon is a top entertainer in western music, known for her "vintage sock-rhythm guitar style, and warm 'swingtime cowgirl' vocals which bring to mind legendary B-western ladies of the silver screen. Jessie has a"fine tenor to baritone vocals" reminiscent of Tommy Duncan, lead singer with Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. He also plays a little saxophone and may drift off into a dozen alias personalities… better keep an eye on the rascal.
+
Their awards and honors together and individually are astonishing:
Western Music Association: 2014, 2013 Duo/Group of the Year; 2013 Trio/Group Harmony Award with Kristyn Harris; 2009, 2012, 2014 Duo/Group Harmony Award; Academy of Western Artists 2009 Female Performer of the Year (Devon); National Cowboy Hall of Fame: 2013 Wrangler Award for New Horizons; GRAMMY Award: Woody's Roundup, Riders in the Sky, based on Toy Story 2; Miss Devon received a Grammy certificate for singing two songs on the award-winning album as JESSIE, the Yodelin' Cowgirl.
+
Western Music Association: 2014 Female Performer of the Year, Youth Harmony Duo of the Year with Olivia Hobbs, 2013 Western Swing Album of the Year, 2012 Crescendo Award for Rising Star, Academy of Western Artists: 2013 Female Performer of the Year, Cowtown Society of Western Music: 2015 Rising Star of the Year Inductee.
+
KRISTYN HARRIS started playing music at age 14 and last fall, became the youngest performer to win the WMA Female Vocalist of the Year. Kristyn is "noted for her powerful vocals, solid rhythm guitar style, songwriting, yodeling, and captivating stage presence." She is joined by award-winning fiddle champ Brook Wallace.
+
BROOK WALLACE, award-winning fiddle champ, joins Kristyn on stage. Growing up as the eldest of 10 kids in a large family near Fort Worth, Texas, she holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever to win all three nationally-ranked junior old-time fiddling championships, held in the same year , and that was when she was barely 9 years old. This was not a false start or beginner’s luck, for Brook is a fiddlin’ phenom, a high octane performer who keeps a busy performance schedule, playing for top bands in just about every style her fiddle can imagine. Audiences quickly discover that she is downright irrepressible when digging into some western swing or letting loose on some fine old gypsy jazz tune. Lock ‘n load, git ‘er done - the girl can play.
+
Bob Stane says, “This is a rare opportunity to catch two acts in one for the same price. We are confident you'll enjoy this evening of wonderful Western music by four talented Texans.”
+
Tix. $20.

+

+
+
She's also an enthusiastic Bernie Sanders supporter. And ever the masterful songwriter and exciting performer.

3-8 pm Weekly "GRAND OLE ECHO" presents "one killer bill" this time around, with THE FAR WEST, SMOOTH HOUND SMITH, CALE TYSON, & JONATHAN TYLER, at the Echo, 1822 Sunset Bl (near the Glendale Bl underpass), Echo Park 90026; 213-413-8200.
+
About this week's acts...
+
CALE TYSON is a singer and songwriter from Nashville, TN. Born in a small town in Texas, he was raised in Fort Worth, the home of Townes Van Zandt and the place where he first heard the classic country sounds that have inspired and enriched his gentle, melancholy, and undeniably whiskey-soaked sound.
+
No less than Rolling Stone calls him, "Old school, sad-bastard outlaw country for a new generation of excited country fans."
+
THE FAR WEST — Not much needs to be said about this group of five - they have been touring the US for the past year while opening shows for Dave and Phil Alvin & The Guilty Ones. It's become a rarity to see them play a show in Los Angeles, so GOE producers day, "Get your butts off the couch and come see them tear the building down!"
+
JONATHAN TYLER is a blues-rock singer-songwriter who offers a sneak peak of his new album, "Holy Smokes," with the single, “Riverbottom.” The tune was written by the band’s guitarist, Brandon Pinkard. “The first time I heard ‘Riverbottom,’ I knew it was a hit,” Tyler said. “I remember where I was. Brandon and Jordan were making their first 'Rise and Shine' record in a cabin 40 miles outside Dallas. I drove out to record some harmonica on a tune. They played a few of the tracks and ‘Riverbottom’ was one of them. I instantly fell in love with the infectious groove and hooky chorus.”
+
"Holy Smokes" will be released this August. Listen to “Riverbottom” now, at:
+
http://www.americansongwriter.com/2015/06/jonathan-tyler-premiers-new-song-riverbottom/
+
In addition to the live acts, DJ "The Roamer" will be spinning Records on "The Porch" out back. A GOE producer tells us, "Each week while you're hanging on the porch enjoying the sun and sipping on a delicious ice cold beer, you hear the tunes curated from Jocelyn Romo (aka 'The Roamer'). She'll be spinning the real deal on Sunday brining her record collection and a far out and groovy attitude for your listening pleasure."
+
You can "Listen To Her Playlist" whenever you'd like, at:

3:30 pm “AS YOU LIKE IT” re-sets Shakespeare to the American Civil War, at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N Topanga Canyon Bl, Topanga, midway between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley.
+
Note, “the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more.”
+
In this production of “As You Like It,” director ELLEN GEER moves the tale of two sets of brothers — one alienated by ambition, the other estranged by envy — to the divided South of the post-Civil War era, adding traditional American folk music and dance from the period. Rosalind is forced to flee camp when her uncle Frederick, usurper of his brother’s position as a general in the Union army, threatens to have her killed. Accompanied by her cousin Celia, Rosalind disguises herself as a man for safety's sake. The disguise comes in handy when she tests the devotion of her noble admirer, Orlando, on the run from his hostile older brother. Meanwhile, the rebel camp is alive with music — banjo, guitar, ukulele, mandolin and more. With Rosalind's wit leading the way, the forces of true love, justice and song eventually triumph.

+
General tix sale begins Thu, June 25, at noon.
+
Based on the acclaimed memoir “One Train Later” by guitarist Andy Summers, “Can't Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police” follows Summers' journey from his early days in the psychedelic '60s music scene when he played with THE ANIMALS to chance encounters with drummer STEWART COPELAND and bassist STING, which led to the formation of the Grammy-winning trio THE POLICE.
+
During the band's rise and its dissolution at the height of their popularity in the mid-’80s, Summers captured history with his candid photographs. Using rare archival footage and insights from the guitarist's side of the stage, “Can't Stand Losing You” brings together past and almost-present as the band members reunite, two decades later, for a global reunion tour in 2007. Following the film screening, Summers will participate in a panel discussion, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation.
