Special Edition: Remembering Gene Wilder... Aug 29 2016

.
.
Gene Wilder, Of "Young Frankenstein," "Blazing Saddles," "Silver Streak," Is Gone

By Larry Wines

Gene Wilder is dead at age 83. Born as Jerome Silberman, he was, as the Washington Post characterized today, "an actor known for nimble comic portrayals of neurotics," though that unfairly diminishes his prowess in light of the charismatic charm he brought to so many roles. The Post also noted, "Mostly, he devoted himself to painting and writing."

That writing included screenplays and five books, "My French Whore," "The Woman Who Wouldn't," "Something to Remember," "Of Magic and Mangers," and his memoir, "Kiss Me Like a Stranger." Mel Brooks and Wilder were nominated for an Academy Award for writing "Young Frankenstein."

Brooks, who directed Wilder in some of his most iconic movie roles, used Twitter today to mourn the actor's death: "Gene Wilder - One of the truly great talents of our time," Brooks wrote. "He blessed every film we did with his magic & he blessed me with his friendship."

Carl Reiner tweeted, "GeneWilder - Au revoir to a gifted actor whose films I suggest you re-visit if you want to be thoroughly entertained."

The social media universe has overflowed with tributes. Everyone from Steve Martin to Bob Saget, Sarah Silverman to Billy Crystal, Harry Connick Jr. to Chris Rock, Albert Brooks to Amy Schumer, Margaret Cho to Rob Lowe, Sir Roger Moore to George Takei, Larry Wilmore to Russell Crowe, Jake Tapper to Leonard Maltin, Snoop Dogg to Josh Groban, has expressed thanks and admiration for Wilder, or just a sense of loss.

Word did not circulate until Monday that Wilder had died Sunday at the age of 83. His family said his passing followed complications from Alzheimer's disease.

His role in "The Producers" would have been enough to constitute a signature for anyone else able to play it so memorably. But it would take the long-running Broadway revival before someone else would do that.

His filmography is more extensive than you might remember. Here it is, most recent to earliest work:

Alice in Wonderland, 1999
Another You, 1991
Funny About Love, 1990
See No Evil, Hear No Evil, 1989
Haunted Honeymoon, 1986
The Woman in Red, 1984
Hanky Panky, 1982
Stir Crazy, 1980
Sunday Lovers, 1980
The Frisco Kid, 1979
The World's Greatest Lover, 1977
Silver Streak, 1976
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother, 1975
The Little Prince, 1974
Young Frankenstein, 1974
Rhinoceros, 1974
Blazing Saddles, 1974
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, But Were Afraid to Ask, 1972
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, 1971
Start the Revolution Without Me, 1970
Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx, 1970
The Producers, 1968
Bonnie and Clyde, 1967 (yep, he's in there with Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons.)

There was always on-screen chemistry when Wilder was teamed with Richard Pryor. The two did four films together -- "Stir Crazy," "See No Evil Hear No Evil," "Silver Streak," and "Another You."

The Hollywood Reporter noted, "Perhaps the most iconic buddy comedy duos of all time, the pair appeared in multiple films, which became instant classics."

Actress Rain Pryor, daughter of Richard Pryor, told that publication her late father "always stood in awe of Gene Wilder." She recalled her father saying, "He thought them together was amazing. He always said, 'That man's a genius, and he's a good man, that's for sure.'"

Much of the duo's bantering onscreen dialog, which drove the audience's love for the characters, would be out of the question today as having too much potential to be offensive to racial sensibilities. That applies exponentially to nearly all the dialog in the Mel Brooks classic, "Blazing Saddles," in which Wilder shared one of the many prominent parts. Yet it was the individuality he imparted to so many of his roles that is responsible for an appreciable part of the pantheon of iconic movie lines.

One example? What he brought to the Leo Bloom character in "The Producers," early in his career, in 1968: "I'm hysterical! I'm having hysterics. I'm hysterical. I can't stop when I get like this. I can't stop. I'm hysterical. Oh my god. Ah-la-la-la."

"Silver Streak" brought another of Wilder's many trademark lines, this one delivered in partial falsetto with precise timing, expressing his character's "not-again" (and yes, neurotic) disbelief each of the many times he is thrown off the speeding passenger train. As he rises from the middle of the tracks or the weeds alongside them, or the water beneath a bridge, animated with a cross-body roundhouse punch of the air, with the perfect marriage of slapstick and predictable, anticipated shtick, he exclaims, "Son of a BITCH!"

That film, like "Blazing Saddles" that preceded it, was notable as a milestone in Hollywood's handling of race issues that had long been soft peddled, made inauthentic by contrived angst, or handled ham-handedly by the wave of blaxploitation crime films. These two films brought characters who needed each other, across racial lines, to achieve their own goals. And the characters of different races were seen facing threats and challenges and genuinely enjoying their associations. In the mid-1970s, just six and eight years after the murder of Martin Luther King, that was huge.

"Blazing Saddles" has amassed plenty of lore, so we'll go with "Silver Streak" for a moment.

Anyone who loves trains will always remember Gene Wilder's editor of gardening books (and sex manuals), with Richard Pryor, Jill Clayburgh, and serious British actor Patrick McGoohan in "Silver Streak." Anyone who sees it remembers McGoohan's nefarious highbrow character applying the "n" word, and how Pryor and Wilder respond.

Some films achieve esoteric meanings their makers never know. "Railfans" is the most polite of many terms for people who like trains -- the other terms range into the territory of those who, uhh, have far too much affection for trains. At all levels of that aberrant subculture, including film, there is folklore. Released in 1976, "Silver Streak" developed an immediate and unique cult status. That includes its unique expression among the crew of the only nationwide Bicentennial project, the American Freedom Train. Upon arrival in each town, anyone who was off-duty checked the theatre listings, then schemed to secure enough host-provided "courtesy cars" and mounted a safari of all who could go to see the film, again and again, through all the states while it was screening. Eventually, at least a dozen crew members of varied racial and ethnic backgrounds -- who were mutually responsible for safeguarding George Washington's copy of the Constitution and Jamie Wyeth's original portrait of JFK, or who had the ancient knowledge required to keep the train's steam locomotives running -- could all quote the entire script of "Silver Streak."

In a sense, that's representative of something larger. Wilder is fondly regarded by diversely different fans for so many of his roles. "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" brought his perfectly-timed pregnant pause and single word, "! -- Nothing!" which turns up as a recorded interjection in sociopolitical punditry. Moreover, he imparted another "something" to his portrayal of the film's lead character -- it's been called "the condescending Wonka meme for the digital generation." Wilder in Wonka's gaudily colorful suit, exhibiting that wistful, almost Mona Lisa smile, is the basis for thousands of different quips and slogans, a ubiquitous internet picture as recognizable as the four-pane Windows square.

There are numerous lines from "Stir Crazy," his and Pryor's, from those in the chicken suits to several behind bars or making their wild and wacky escape.

There was Dr. Frederick Frankenstein -- and you just caught yourself, didn't you, to make sure you pronounced it the way Gene Wilder kept correcting the other characters to say it, in that signature line: "That's Fronck-en-steen." Some may remember his delivery, "Ladies and gentlemen, may I present for your intellectual and philosophical pleasure -- the CREATURE."

In real life, Gene Wilder lost his celebrated wife, Gilda Radner, to ovarian cancer in 1989. The two had married in 1984. His 2005 book, "Kiss Me Like a Stranger," was called by the L.A. Times, "witty" and "a frank, charming memoir." The reviewer found the book, "refreshingly free from the two major sins of show-biz autobiographies: self-aggrandizement and score-settling."

Indeed, Wilder's honesty prevails throughout its pages. The Times noted, "...when it comes to neediness, no one could top Wilder's third wife, comedian Gilda Radner, whose exuberant, exhausting personality dominates the book's three most interesting chapters. Radner was, he writes, 'the most generous and compassionate and original person I had ever known.'"

But that's not all. The two married in 1984. He also declared her to have been a "clinging baby pulling at my shirt sleeve every minute."

Times book reviewer Wendy Smith astutely found the essential points, writing, "It's tough to be honest about a popular star who died prematurely, but Wilder makes palpable both his love and his exasperation as Radner battled ovarian cancer and, like many terminally ill people, vented her pain and rage on those closest to her."

Smith continued, "When he explodes, 'just get off of yourself! I don't know how to help you any more than I'm doing,' he's venting not just his own frustration but that of anyone who's ever been in the unbearable situation of watching someone they love die without the well-scripted grace of a Hollywood movie."

The reviewer as diviner of human nature perfectly fit the book she was reviewing. Smith also explored, "Wilder's nuanced portrait of Richard Pryor similarly balances the pleasures of working with a comic genius against the aggravation of dealing with a mercurial, often hostile -- and while working on 'Stir Crazy,' drug-crazed -- individual."

Wilder and Radner were among the very few show biz couples who, despite it all, were totally in love, truly devoted to one another, through all the pain and impending death. Both could be zany comic geniuses along with the thoughtful side of creativity the public never saw. Then came the void, no more Roseanne Roseannadanna, or Emily Litella, or the other expressions of her bright genius. And only a year after her death, a veritable cure was found for the exact strain of cancer that had killed her.

Was Gene Wilder ever the same? He wrote "Kiss Me Like a Stranger" when he was, himself, a cancer survivor, at age 71, of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Smith concluded about the book, "If this all sounds awfully serious, be assured that Wilder tells plenty of entertaining stories about his work with everyone, including Jerome Robbins, Mike Nichols, Mel Brooks and Zero Mostel. [This] is as witty a memoir as you're likely to get... It's also a reflective and well-written meditation on the life of someone who has more on his mind than the next big part or belly laugh."

So much of his work was collaborative, whether writing "Young Frankenstein" with Mel Brooks or in his onscreen pairings, or in his marriage to a famous comedienne. Orlando Jones captured that when he wrote today on his social media page, "RIP Gene Wilder. You will be missed. Say hello to Gilda and Richard for us."

Gene Wilder left a considerable body of work on the screen as actor and screenwriter, and fortunately plenty of written words that come alive on stage or screen or for the solitary reader. That prominently includes his memoir among the five books he authored.

The rest? As always with the departed artist, it is for us to determine how his (or her) influence speaks to us, how meaningfully, how enduringly. There's that painting depicting Elvis with James Dean, Buddy Holly and Marilyn Monroe all sitting at a bar. So now it warrants redoing to position all of them as the audience in a club, with Gene Wilder, Gilda Radner, and Richard Pryor the co-headliners sharing the stage. Because surely, we, their public, wanted to see encores from each of them. And in this year filled with unending unpleasant surprises, we surely could have used all three of them to get through it.

**** SATURDAY FOCUS EVENT ****
Sat, Aug 20, 6-8 pm: LAUREN ADAMS & her excellent band to play her CD RELEASE SHOW at Genghis Cohen, 740 N Fairfax Av, Los Angeles 90046. It's a FREE event, as folk artist LAUREN ADAMS brings her exceptional full band of seasoned pros to celebrate her new album, "Somewhere Else." The quite impressive lineup of musicians on stage -- each a recording artist and L.A. music scene stalwart in his/her own right -- are Lauren, Nick Kirgo, Debra Dobkin, Mark "Pocket" Goldberg, Dave Frase, Hank VanSickle, and Lisa Turner. Full info on the new album and the band are at: http://www.laurenadams.com/

At her site, you can listen to Lauren talk about songwriting and her process -- in "The STANDING ‘O’ PROJECT" -- and watch the video for "Somewhere Else," which premiered at "Songwriting UK."

Full disclosure: the Guide has been very impressed for a long time. Take this quote: "Lauren’s song 'Thirsty,' title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country and western from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock." -- Larry Wines, The Acoustic Americana Music Guide, 2012.

Heartfelt and full of emotion, Adams always adds her sense of humor making the music fun and upbeat. As she has done on her previous three releases, with "Somewhere Else," Adams delivers quality songwriting in the Carol King / Eagles / Lucinda Williams vein: deep Americana roots and vivid storytelling delivered by a group of tasteful, compassionate players including her producer and friend Nick Kirgo (Nels Kline of Wilco, JD Souther, Vonda Shepard), Mark 'Pocket' Goldberg and Dave Fraser). Lauren Adams’ songs evoke lots of places and times and themes. You hear everything from the Florida Everglades to L.A.'s Laurel Canyon. There’s wood and steel and sweet harmonies at one turn and fuzz guitar and drums at the next. But the song remains king.

You can go early and order dinner; venue is known for its Chinese food. Make sure they seat you in the music hall, and be early enough to get a seat at what'll be a capacity crowd for this FREE show.

TV writer-producer Betsy Borns will lead a post-show discussion after the performance. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award, the Hull-Warriner Award and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. It's a coming of age story set against the backdrop of the women's liberation movement from the '60s through the '80s. This Pulitzer Prize winner from Wendy Wasserstein is a moving examination of the progress of a generation, from the socially and politically activist sixties to the success-oriented eighties-a time during which the status of American women underwent profound, and sometimes unsettling, change. As women around the world reach the highest levels of corporate, social, and political power, this play examines how we got here. Funny, touching, and written with rare grace and sensitivity. NOVEMBER'S EVENTS... EXCEPT, ER, UHH... (that damned election)

No. Wait. That godawful election happens in November. "Warning, Will Robinson!," with full mechanical arm flapping. Because the smell from hell will be upon us all. Egads, zounds, odds bodkins, and Harry Potter's invisibility cloak. Where's Marty in the flux-capacitor-equipped DeLorean? Can anybody retrieve that usurped book of winning numbers from Biff the bully? Before someone else he can't intimidate gets branded a butthead and told they're fired? Where's the house with Dorothy and Toto that falls on the witch when you need it? If there's a yellow brick road this time, it's made of yellow snow.

There were Missiles of October in 1962. How many months after November before one of these malevolent megalomaniacs will bumble into a confrontation or the other one will eschew diplomacy in favor of forward-force-projection-based military brinksmanship?

One, who denies global climate change, would enable a free-for-all of drilling rigs and crisscrossing pipelines, and the other accepts climate science but would permanently destroy groundwater basins with fracking for select foundational friends.

This damned election. When, by all that's right and good and fair and honest, ANY third-party should win. Except corporate mainstream media will spend hundreds more hours of airtime between now and then, trivializing both the Greens and the Libertarians. Everybody from the ever-yelling Chris Matthews to outfoxed Chris Wallace to excruciatingly childish Rachel Maddow to erudite Fareed Zakaria will reliably back-up the millions spent by the two big parties to put the full deck of fear cards in play. And jokers will slide from sleeves to quite intentionally make you feel foolish to vote for either third party instead of the unfunny jokes of vampire nominees that Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling cooked-up and foisted on us from the great beyond.

So instead of actualizing your ethics and voting for a third party that doesn't have a candidate facing imminent indictment for a RICO conspiracy involving a fake university or government favors for foundation donations? A candidate, who, gasp, makes coherent sense? You'll stare at the Deadman's Hands of marked cards all doctored to be Red and Blue aces and eights.

Abundant revelations will have been obfuscated, and distractions will be relentless, to keep you from learning how the cards are marked. Because you'll be led by pied pipers with their hair on fire, flashing neon that the Ruskies did it (whatever "it" is). You'll ignore or forget the essential fact that the revealed stuff is real.

And with Al Jazeera America gone and John Kerry's demand fulfilled that Congress secretly fund discrediting RT, the corporatocracy's pretense of competitive enterprises (that just happen to share the same agenda) will get the singular message of the partisan duoploly proclaimed and echoed from every strip-mined mountaintop, and carried up from every oil-soaked coast, and delivered along every pothole-ridden highway that austerity never repaired. And so you'll hate yourself as you vote for either of the justifiably reviled candidates of one of the two corporate-owned big parties because a vote for anyone who is reasonable is a vote for the one you revile more than the one everyone else reviles more.

So the Corporacratic Saloon pours rotgut whisky as cheap anesthesia and the game goes on with its thoroughly marked cards. The game where only the fat, smug donkeys and the bloated, depressed and drunk elephants can have a seat at the table. Wearing their tentlike designer mumus with lots of spaces to hide things and their Chinese-made $70 neckties and hundred-dollar Bangladeshi shirts. And you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. Even as you try to avoid the oddly unique moment of nausea and getting your hands dirty, contemplating the impending voting booth like the monolith in "2001."

And your fight-or-flight mechanism evokes Howard Beale from your permanently internalized acceptance of The Truth of the Network, making you want to scream reflexively, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!" except you know you'll get no sympathy because everyone is at that point, so you don't. Then you recall your Shakespeare and want, with all your heart and soul, to proclaim in your best theatrical voice, "A plague on both your houses!" And stomp off, resolved like Pontius Pilates, the exercise salon guy, with his bowl of water, not to vote at all.

Except you know every thought you have and anything you say when you self-disenfranchise becomes instantly invisible, immediately dismissible. Placing you by default among the millions they have worked so hard to purposefully disenfranchise because "those" people don't vote the right way. As if either big party gave a damn about anybody except their mega-rich donor-class (foreign & domestic), anyway. But if calling-down that plague would take you off the universal monitoring of the cyber-industrial state, you'd call it a beneficial trade, even an act of self-preservation, the ultimate purpose of fight-or-flight. But it won't redeem you, because nothing will erase your continuously-updated cyber profile, and you long ago accepted that because of the free pizza coupons on your cell phone.

The "fight" options aren't looking too good. Will no one save us from this meddlesome fleece?

Are there any month-long music camps that last the whole month of November? In, say, Botswana? ANYWHERE beyond the internet and a kid on a bicycle who throws newspapers? Or can we just join the bears along about Nov. 1st and hibernate until next spring, when it'll all mercifully be OVER? Anybody for rowing around the world without a radio, with the first leg to, say, Australia? That'd have to take at least a couple three months, right?

Or maybe we all need to beat the ever-manipulative capitalist bastards at their own game and buy stock -- in Pepto-Bismol, and in those hideously overpriced pharmaceuticals that treat hangnails and have side effects that include massive memory loss. (Do any prevent puking when political BS can't pass the smell test?)

This electile dysfunction makes you think of every nutjob you've ever run across. Probably a defensive mechanism, searching for someone, anyone, worse than the two predatory candidates you're afraid will come out of your closet at night. The robot is still wildly flapping those mechanical arms warning us. Like the TV bank robbery monitor who can't actually do anything about the robbers -- or the banksters. (How well-timed was THAT ad campaign, given this election?) For the first time ever, that horribly annoying character on the old "Lost in Space" reruns is understandable. No, not the robot. The one who kept shreiking, "Oh! The pain, the PAIN!"

THIS WEEK'S MUSIC VIDEO: "WASTING AWAY AGAIN IN MY COUPE DE VILLE."

Hang on. This is really good.

If you frequent the Coffee Gallery Backstage or you were around when the Ice House hosted a mix of folk music AND comedy, then surely you've been dazzled by the musical performance prowess of DUANE THORIN, who, from time to time has had assorted other identities, from simply THORIN to the anchor of the BOHEMIAN SOUL RUSTLERS, and other things in antiquity that predate our being sentient. He's not only performed at both of those (and plenty of other notable) venues, but he's booked and produced original shows and debuted formidable acts both places.

Well. Turns out our man of surprises has also done one of the absolute best indie music videos we've ever seen. And he's been holding out on us, because he made it way back in 2011.

It was an unrelated conversation that caused him to say that "it" resulted "from a friend sending me the phrase in 2008, 'Some People claim that there's a Banker to Blame'..."

Huh? What was the "it" in question? Did we miss something?

Obviously, yes. And it should not continue to be missed any longer, because it's reeeeeallly good.

Duane says, "I wrote this and made a video... and yes, those are Occupy encampments, and that is my mom..."

It's "Wasting Away Again in My Coupe de Ville." Enjoy!

MORE VIDEOS: LISA HALEY & THE ZYDECATS & THEIR 20th ANNIVERSARY ROMP

Among the most anticipated bands playing the annual "IRVINE GLOBAL VILLAGE FESTIVAL" (on Sep 24) in OC, and the annual "ADAMS AVENUE STREET FAIR" (on Sun, Sep 25), in San Diego, are LISA HALEY & THE ZYDECATS, favorites at Cajun-Zydeco festivals across the country and throughout Europe. Bob Stane recorded his Comments from last show: "...A hugely successful show in early March of 2016. Two standing encores. Every person in the room adored them. 5 member group but really two people doing the heavy lifting. Husband talked (very well) and the wife played a big, cello. Did origninals, covers, folk, rock, etc. Exceptional. One of the best acts of the year. This is creative and original and very, very entertaining. All played instruments. The female lead has done movie and TV work. Do everything possible (and legal) to get my loyal (and trusting) patrons to attend."

DIRTY CELLO..... From wild gypsy music through the blues and ending with some shredding classic rock, "The Dirty Cello Show" presents cello like you've never heard before! Think BB King meets Yo Yo Ma.

Go to their web page and hear the great songs... dirtycello.com

Starting with a bang and never stopping, Dirty Cello features the virtuosic cello stylings of Rebecca Roudman, one of the San Francisco bay area's most exciting cross-over cellists. Dirty Cello takes you on a wild tour of uptempo music featuring down home blues, Eastern-European dance music, a bit of bluegrass, and some classic rock.

Having wowed audiences in numerous tours throughout the U.S., plus acting as cultural ambassadors to China and working the European festival circuit, Dirty Cello has a unique voice that’s resonated around the world.
"Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic, and textured, and only occasionally classical." Lou Fancher, Oakland Magazine.

From China to Italy, and all over the U.S., Dirty Cello brings the world a high energy and unique spin on blues and bluegrass. Led by vivacious cross-over cellist, Rebecca Roudman, Dirty Cello is cello like you’ve never heard before. "The band plays every style imaginable, and does some fantastic covers. (Their rendition of “Purple Haze” is incredible.) But what is most spectacular about them is hearing the depth of soul in Roudman’s playing—it goes beyond what most people would expect from the instrument. She plays it with so much heart, you’ll wonder why more bands don’t have a cellist." Good Times Santa Cruz

A GUIDE SATURDAY FOCUS SHOW...
Sat, Aug 13, 3 pm CAROLYN HESTER and JOHN YORK play a matinee in the cool confines of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reserv (10 am-10 pm, 7 days) 626-798-6236. Folk Music Revival of Greenwich Village, An Afternoon to Remember the 60s,

Carolyn Hester, noted Folk Singer from the 60's Greenwich Village scene, can easily be called the First Lady of the American Folk Revival. Before Joan Baez, Judy Collins, or Joni Mitchell, there was Carolyn Hester. She is today considered one of the leading artists of the era. In addition to appearing on the cover of the "Saturday Evening Post in 1964, she is remembered in Chronicles, Bob Dylan's autobiography, as the individual who was most instrumental in Dylan's signing to Columbia records. In 1961, Hester met Bob Dylan and invited him to play on her third album, her first on the Columbia label. Hammond, her producer, quickly signed Dylan to the label.

Hester is known for her angelic voice and her repertoire of traditional English ballads mixed with an original selection of contemporary folk. She has recorded more than fifteen albums in her fifty years of performing. She was signed to the Decca/Coral label in 1957 by her manager-producer, Norman Petty. Also under Petty's influence at that time, was a hip entertainer and friend of Hester's, Buddy Holly. Throughout the '60s, Hester was well-established in the Greenwich Village folk scene.

Hester was one of many young Greenwich Village singers who rode the crest of the 1960s folk music wave, helping launch Gerde's Folk City in 1960. She appeared on the cover of the May 30, 1964, issue of the Saturday Evening Post. According to Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times, Hester was "one of the originals—one of the small but determined gang of ragtag, early-'60s folk singers who cruised the coffee shops and campuses, from Harvard Yard to Bleecker Street, convinced that their music could help change the world." Hester, dubbed "The Texas Songbird," was politically active, spearheading the controversial boycott of the television program Hootenanny when Pete Seeger was blacklisted from it.

JOHN YORK hardly needs an introduction to The Coffee Gallery Backstage audiences. But, for the uninitiated, York is one of a small handful of musicians alive today who was one a member of the legendary 60s folk-rock band, The Byrds. But, he’s also played and toured with Sir Douglas Quintet, the Mamas and the Papas and Johnny Rivers. He has most recently recorded and toured with Barry McGuire along with his own band known as The Jangle Brothers featuring Chad Watson and Billy Darnell. Seeing York in concert is not only bringing classic folk-rock songs alive, but making them urgent and relevant to today.

Today, John York is a living treasury of story, song and instruments collected throughout his life. When talking with him, it’s hard not to miss the musical odyssey that shines through his eyes. He is an authentic example of how one musician can carry a legacy of spirit, truth, compassion and wisdom that continues to grow through his musical expressions. Not only has he survived the perilous rock & roll days of the 60s, he has thrived and transcended them.

Most events, including plenty of maritime music, sea chanteys, and the like, happen September 10 & 11, 2016, from 10 am-5 pm. Beyond that, there are plenty of specifics -- starting Friday, Sept. 9 -- that require advance planning, and some of those need extra tickets that sell-out well in advance.

ADDITIONAL EVENTS & ACTIVITIES...

The Guide wants to be sure you have the charts to the channel and your hand on the rudder:

The "Parade of Sail" happens on Sept. 9th...

Every year, a fleet of historically significant sailing vessels comes to join the Ocean Institute's vessels based at Dana Point. They come not only to display their beauty and majesty but also to share with the public a maritime history that is inextricably part of California’s past, a heritage we work hard to preserve as we educate future generations about our oceans. It is in support of this effort that the event assembles these great ships for all to experience.
__________

September 9, 6-9 pm...

Enjoy the Parade of Sail from the Ocean Institute at the "Sails & Ales Tall Ships Festival Kickoff Party," featuring beer tastings from Sierra Nevada, Valiant Brewing, Stone Brewing, and Mother Earth Brew Company, live music from LA Edwards & Jesse Daniel Edwards, food trucks, and mermaid encounters. Sponsors say it’s an event the whole family can enjoy.
______

September 9, 4:30-7:30 pm...

"Sunset Parade Sails"

Join the armada as you cast off for adventure aboard a historic tall ship during the annual tall ships parade at sunset. Work with the crew hauling up sail or simply sit back and enjoy the spectacular demonstration of skill, knowledge and survival.
______

"Mermaid Breakfast"

Sat, Sept. 10, 9-10:30 am
or
Sun, Sept. 11, 9-10:30 am

Join special guest Mermaid Catalina for a one-of-a-kind breakfast experience. Meet and greet your Mermaid friend, make a fun mermaid craft, enjoy pancakes from Party in a Box catering, and watch the mermaid swim underwater. Family fun for all mermaids at heart.
Price: $40 per person INCLUDES a Tall Ships Adventure Pass for admission to the Festival; Members receive 10% off when entering member ID at checkout.
__________

"Cannon Battles"

Sat, Sept. 10, 4:30-7:30 pm
or
Sun, Sept. 11, 4:30-7:30 pm

One of the best ways to experience the Ocean Institute Tall Ships Festival is by sailing aboard a tall ship during the popular mock cannon battles. Enjoy blasting cannons, towering rigging, bustling decks and the magnificence of canvas full of wind. Work with the crew hauling up sail or simply sit back and enjoy the spectacular demonstration of skill, knowledge and survival.
__________

Don't delay getting tickets for the events that happen at sea. Those sell-out. Whether or not you have the dubloons for those, the many activities at the Ocean Institute and the live music and on-board tours and demonstrations will make this a highlight of your end-of-summer.
