GREGG ALLMAN, who died Saturday, recorded a video sit-down for AXS TV's "BIG INTERVIEW." For those with AXS, there's more tonight. Their original 180-min 2014 documentary, "SLAVE TRADE: HOW PRINCE CHANGED THE MUSIC BUSINESS" airs twice, at 7 and 11 pm Pacific. It chronicles a tale Big Media inadequately reported at the time — how and why PRINCE changed his name in the 1990s to that group of oddball symbols. It wasn't because he was trying to weirdly assert some kind of unique individually. It was the only way to get out of an exploitive contract with the Warner Brothers record label. His innovative escape and the lawsuits it brought led to a revolution in the music business as he fought for his rights to his own music, and affirmed the rights of all artists, everywhere.
Of course, folkies know that the first, and huge, round of victories by artists against oppressive labels came when MICHELE SHOCKED took a case all the way up through the courts, invoking the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. That's the little-cited Amendment that freed the slaves and forever forbade "involuntary servitude." She won, and it brought-down the label that refused to release or return her rights to her recorded material. But Dan Rather hasn't discovered that story yet, 'cause he hasn't booked Michele for his show.

BENEFIT FOR PENNY NICHOLS, "SUMMERSONGS" FOUNDER, IS JUNE 9th
On Friday, June 9 at 7:30 pm, a multi-artist benefit concert for folksinger PENNY NICHOLS is the program at the well-established "Cambridge Drive Concert Series" at Cambridge Drive Church, 550 Cambridge Dr, Goleta, CA 93117; 805-964-0436; https://www.cambridgedrivechurch.org/concerts
It's an important fundraiser to help Penny pay her medical bills while she deals with cancer. Penny is the founder of "SUMMERSONGS" and a mentor and teacher to many other wonderful performers.
Penny has shared the stage with legendary artists, including JACKSON BROWNE, THE NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, LINDA RONSTADT & THE STONE PONIES, JENNIFER WARNES, and MARY McCASLIN.
The tickets are $12 with advance reservations, $15 without (if not sold-out in advance).
Of course, additional donations are encouraged.
You can make reservations by phone or online, at:

Producers tell us, "Most artists will do 2 songs, then we'll do one or two of Penny's songs together. Come and join us, we're going to have a blast! If you can't make it, feel the love wherever you are!"
Whether you can attend or not, musicians and music lovers have the opportunity to help one of our own in her time of need.
___
Concert series producers tell the Guide, "Penny Nichols is an amazing singer-songwriter and performer, a mentor and teacher to many other wonderful performers, and a friend to our series who has performed for us multiple times."
Penny is also the founder of "Summersongs," a songwriter's camp occurring three times a year, as "Wintersongs" and "Summersongs West" in California, and "Summersongs East" in upstate New York. "Summersongs" began 20 years ago, and Penny, along with her husband Mark, have been tirelessly making all three camps happen each year with 70-100 songwriters in attendance at each one.
Sponsors of the benefit concert add, "Penny and Mark give all of their love, energy and money to help everyone else in the Summersongs community, in any way they can. It's been Penny's passion to create a nurturing atmosphere to teach songwriters and to grow songwriting communities all over the country."
They continue, "Penny has been challenged for years with overcoming breast cancer, first diagnosed 12 years ago. Two years ago, the cancer started raising its ugly head again, so Penny is in a clinical trial for a new cancer fighting treatment. Both the costs for treatment and the attendant costs have been a terrible burden for this gem in the wider music community, so we at Cambridge Drive Concerts are doing what we do best — throwing a marvelous show that both entertains and helps to build community."
"If you know Penny, you'll be thrilled to offer support to her. If you don't... you'll hear more amazing music from astounding performers in one evening than anyone can expect."
"We're asking for our normal donation of $12 with reservations and $15 without, plus we'll be receiving other donations to go to help Penny & her husband Mark. The musicians are all donating their time and talent out of love for Penny."
The concert series is well-established. And it's worth mentioning that its pro-folk-music orientation isn't because of the usual thing of a local organization renting a venue that happens to be a church becuase it's big enough to seat an audience. This one is operated directly by the very interesting local church itself, which invites all visitors to its website to "Stop by and have a picnic in the [church's own] park, enjoy one of the many recitals that local music teachers hold in our building, come to a concert..."
And, in case you're wondering, they express, "Our commitment to soul liberty means that each individual is responsible for his or her own faith, so we do not have creeds which prescribe what a person is supposed to believe."
They assert, "Faith is about more than finding peace for your soul. It is also about making the world a better place."
Of course, there's more at their website.
___
Artists booked for the series' coming season include Jackie Bristow, Solvia Talvik, Rebecca Folsom, Tammy Schiffer, Jean Mann, ODi, Joe Jenks, Claude Bourbon, and Steven Pelland are all scheduled to be with us.

BLUEGRASSERS LORRAINE JORDAN & CAROLINA ROAD ARE "READY FOR THE TIMES TO GET BETTER" WITH BRAND NEW VIDEO
By Kyle Watson
(NASHVILLE, TENN., May 24, 2017) - Critically-acclaimed bluegrass band LORRAINE JORDAN & CAROLINA ROAD has just revealed their brand new video for the song, "Ready For The Time To Get Better." The perfectly themed song was originally recorded by country and Folk-Americana legend CRYSTAL GAYLE, who originally released the No. 1 hit nearly 40 years ago.
"The Bluegrass Situation" is currently giving fans a preview of the video. Watch it at:
http://www.thebluegrasssituation.com/read/watch-lorraine-jordan-carolina-road-ready-times-get-better
The studio version of the song features CRYSTAL GAYLE on lead vocals and is included among the 14 tracks on the band's upcoming "Country Grass" album on Pinecastle Records, available early at:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/country-grass/id993733234
"We are excited to release the last video from the 'Country Grass' collection. This video features just myself and the CAROLINA ROAD boys," said LORRAINE JORDAN. She continues, "It's more of the contemporary bluegrass style. I put my heart and soul into this one because I really feel the words."
Jordan adds, "'Ready for the Times to Get Better' has always been one of my favorite songs. Whether it's the DOC WATSON or the CRYSTAL GAYLE version, the song never gets old. It was a great song to add to the 'Country Grass' project. The Carolina Road boys did a great job playing on this tune. It’s one of our most requested tunes."
The band's current bluegrass radio single "Seminole Wind" with JOHN ANDERSON continues to surge up the charts. A real sing-along anthem, it currently sits at No. 10 on the national "Bluegrass Unlimited Top 30 Countdown" radio survey. The success comes on the 25th anniversary of the original release of the song, which was a smash hit.
LORRAINE JORDAN & CAROLINA ROAD will be hitting the road all summer in support of their latest album, "Country Grass." In addition to featuring timeless classics with hitmakers like JOHN ANDERSON and CRYSTAL GAYLE, the collection also includes collaborations with LEE GREENWOOD, THE KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS, JOHN CONLEE, EDDY RAVEN, T.G. SHEPPARD, and MARTY RAYBON, in addition to the late JIM ED BROWN and LYNN ANDERSON.
Their hard travelin' wall-to-wall summer festival circuit doesn't bring them to California.
Hard work has paid off for this award winning bluegrass band. Having a strong stage presence and performing a reliably dynamic show has earned them over 100 performances each year throughout North America at more than 60 major festivals. Carolina Road plays worldwide and hosts a national bluegrass festival, "Christmas in the Smokies."
They have hosted the "Canadian Bluegrass Awards," toured Europe, and played 15 bluegrass cruises. Carolina Road's performance is a traditional sound with a fresh approach, which includes invigorating instrumentals, smooth blending vocals, and all the energy that you can stand.
Lorraine likes to think of the band as a family, and her band members have longevity in the band. BEN GREENE (banjo/vocals) "2015 Banjo Player of the Year" has been with Carolina Road for 11 years. JOSH GOFORTH (fiddle/guitar/vocals), has also been with them for 11 years, and is a Master Fiddle Player extraordinaire. He was a 2009 GRAMMY award finalist for the CD "Cuttin Loose." TOMMY LONG (guitar/lead vocals) has been with the band for 4 years. He's easily recognizable for outstanding lead vocals and driving rhythm guitar. Also touring with the band is much sought after bass player GARY CREED, along with the essential dobro player JOE PESSOLANO.
Learn more and order the new album directly from the band (where they'll get the most money from their work) at www.carolinaroadband.com

ONE SONG'S CHARMING BACKSTORY, FROM TRACY NEWMAN
Tracy Newman is known to the local folk music community as a performer with her acoustic guitar who sometimes brings first-rate accompaniment. Some even know that, back in the day, she was the the youngest-ever member of the NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS (underage, so it was inevitable when Randy Sparks kicked her out, to keep everyone out of trouble).
If you know about the years in between, you know that she did card tricks on the Johnny Carson "Tonight" Show, en-route to a TV writing career. And you certainly know that she won both an EMMY and a Peabody Award for the same episode of the "Ellen Degeneris" TV show, where she co-wrote the famous and very groundbreaking "coming-out" episode.
So, yeah, she can tell a good story. Most of the time these days, we get those stories by listening to her song lyrics. But she sent us the bittersweet backstory that informs a song from her upcoming album.
Tracy tells us, "When I was a young teen, there was a boy I liked in school. He liked me too. I went away to camp for the summer. We wrote love letters. When I came back I was so excited to see him, but he had changed so much physically in those three months, that it wasn’t the same boy I had been writing to in my mind!"
"He was like a foot taller, very thin and he now had severe acne, whereas before his face was clear."
"I couldn’t make the adjustment. I couldn’t see past it, so I broke up with him. I still 'loved him...' (I’m putting that in quotes because I 'fell in love' so often back then.)"
"I was so sad when I did that to him. I felt so guilty! Later... like maybe 15 years later, I wrote this song, 'So Many Letters,' from his POV."
"P.S. We're friends now, and he's a dermatologist."
___
The song, "So Many Letters," will be on Tracy's upcoming album.
Listen to it NOW at Soundcloud, with the nice guitar work, at:

There are more listenable tracks there, as well. And there's more on Tracy, including a signup option for her e-mail blurbs, at her website:

FOLKIE DAR WILLIAMS AMONG PRESENTERS AT UPCOMING INDIE MUSIC A2IM LIBERA AWARDS
On Thursday, June 8, the independent music community will come together to honor their peers at the 6th annual "Libera Awards" presented by SoundExchange.
Among the presenters at this year's Libera Awards will be singer-songwriter extraordinaire DAR WILLIAMS. Exploring religion, politics, and protest through her pop-infused folk, Williams has been a vocal presence in support of independent music for more than 25 years and a major figure in folk music for almost three decades. Frequently performing at folk festivals and making appearances at events in support of independent music, her goal has always been to circumvent the juggernauts in the music industry to bring music directly to her fans. In fact, Williams chose to crowdfund her latest album, "Emerald," through PledgeMusic, which enabled her to release it independently.
Williams was described by "The New Yorker" as "One of America's very best singer-songwriters." She released her first full album, "The Honesty Room," on Burning Field, her own independent label, in 1993. After securing licensing and distribution through Razor and Tie, she went on to release a slew of studio albums, including 1996's "Mortal City" and 2003's "The Beauty of the Rain," and more that have secured her status as a luminary in the folk music world. Her distinctive soprano voice and honest, personal lyrics have earned her rave reviews and a loyal fan base. When she's not touring, Williams is busy teaching music at her alma mater, Wesleyan University, working with children at summer camps, leading songwriting workshops, and writing books.
The event will see performances by ANI DiFRANCO, NICK LOWE, TALIB KWELI, TWIN PEAKS, and NICK HAKIN.
The Libera Awards, which will take place at NYC's PlayStation Theater, are the culmination of A2IM's "Indie Week," a four-day lineup of workshops and panels hosted by music industry leaders. Pandora CEO and founder TIM WESTERGREN will be taking part as a keynote speaker, as will Music Confidential founder SUSAN BUTLER, and SoundExhange's CEO, MIKE HUPPE. Indie Week is June 5-8, 2017, at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center in New York.
More about Indie Week is available at:
http://a2im.org/event/indie-week-2017.
You may not have heard of A2IM. It's a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit trade organization headquartered in New York City that exists to support and strengthen the independent recorded music sector. Membership currently includes a broad coalition of more than 440 independently-owned American music labels. A2IM represents these independently owned small and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs) interests in the marketplace, in the media, on Capitol Hill, and as part of the global music community. In doing so, it supports a key segment of America's creative class that represents America's diverse musical cultural heritage. Billboard Magazine, using Nielsen SoundScan data, identified the Independent music label sector as 35.1 percent of the music industry's U.S. recorded music sales market in 2016 based on copyright ownership, making Independent labels collectively the largest music industry sector.
SoundExchange President and CEO MIKE HUPPE is also slated to present an award. SoundExchange is an organization at the center of the global digital music business. It serves major and independent labels and artists as well as digital service providers. At SoundExchange, Huppe has used his business and legal skills to ensure that artists throughout the music industry are able to collect their performance royalties. Royalty collections have increased by more than $500 million annually since Michael's tenure began.
SoundExchange says, "Huppe's goal is to ensure that musicians are paid fairly and in an efficient manner," and adds, "Since its inception in 2003, SoundExchange has collected over $3.5 billion for its artists, and... distributed more than $4.5 billion in digital performance royalties to recording artists and rights owners."
Today, SoundExchange is responsible for approximately 16 percent of the entire U.S. recorded music industry's wholesale revenue.
Nominees at the Libera Awards include artists and labels from all facets of the independent music universe. Also nominated are organizations who have worked tirelessly to champion independent music throughout the country and the world. You can view a full list of this year's nominees at:

* Full info on all of tonight's acts is at: http://www.theecho.com/event/1483165-valley-queen-los-angeles/
* Check out "PLAY LIKE A GIRL ZINE," about music, culture, art, politics, etc., released once a month the night of the show; there's "extra special content" online @playlikeagirlLA and www.playlikeagirlla.com
* Six years ago, VALLEY QUEEN's front woman Natalie Meadors drove to Los Angeles on a whim, looking to expand her musical horizons. After a lonely and frustrating year, she was on the verge of returning home when she happened upon an acoustic jam session where she met guitarist David Donaldson. Meadors was immediately reminded of the comfort and friendliness of her Arkansas roots; the perfect environment for musical creation. She could hear traces of her hometown influences in his riffs: Zeppelin, Duane Allman, and Muddy Waters. The two began collaborating, exchanging ideas and drawing in other like-minded musicians. "It gave us all something to rest our heads upon, a musical family that became a home for us all," says Meadors. Today, Valley Queen is a hybrid of southern rock and Motown, with traces of 1970s canyon rock. "Carnival", the A- side on their debut 7" produced by Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, FIDLAR, Fool's Gold), embodies these influences as Meadors sings about creating a supportive artistic community in Echo Park. The B-side "Make You Feel" is a bluesy slow jam about young love.

Recorded over the course of two years and produced by Brian Whelan, it is the restless yearning of a young new South that has been represented by The Drive-By Truckers, Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell. With this new album, MELANCON takes an unflinching look inside the heart of Americana darkness as he stylistically dives deeper into the roots of his own imagination, nurtured in the badlands and bayous of his home."

7:30 am-11 am "FUTURE FORUM – ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE & ROBOTICS" presented by CSU Dominguez Hills and sponsored by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, happens at ROW DTLA (thirty acres of historic buildings in the heart of Downtown L.A.), at 777 S Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90021; http://laedc.org/event/future-forums

As disruptive technologies continue to pervade society, they require people and organizations to adapt to new capabilities. Artificial Intelligence is already having a profound impact on our personal and working lives–and its impact will only increase in the future.
* "Much like the PC disrupted our lives in the 1980s, AI will lay the foundation for future decades of how we interact with technology, and how these new advents in technology will impact our everyday lives. More specifically, how will advanced manufacturing and machine learning affect our workforce in LA County? Will robots replace jobs, or complement and enhance existing roles in the various industries in the LA region? How will the benefits offered by the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI present opportunities for industries including airlines, manufacturing, smart buildings, smart homes, and oil and power?" Those questions and more will be addressed by an impressive lineup of speakers.
* Keynote speaker is MICHAEL KING, VP & General Manager, Global Education Industry, IBM. Panelists are DR. RANDALL W. HILL, Jr., Executive Director, USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies; and TODD HOLLOWAY, Director of Content Science & Algorithms, Netflix. Welcoming remarks by WILLIE J. HAGAN, Ph. D., President, California State University, Dominguez Hills; and BILL ALLEN, CEO, Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation.

* Now, director Dan Fishbach and musical director Anthony Lucca bring it back. Marc Francoeur, Susan Kohler, Miyuki Miyagi and Michael Yapujian star in this powerful and bold theatrical experience that was a sensation when it opened off-Broadway in 1968. A prolific singer-songwriter, actor and director, Brel composed and performed literate, thoughtful and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following – initially in Belgium and France, and later throughout the world.
* This revue, conceived by Blau and Shuman FEATURES ENGLISH LYRICS and additional material by the pair and pays tribute to Brel's unique genius. In any language, his songs brim with flair, attitude and European sophistication, retaining their edgy vibe over half a century after they were written. While Brel is no longer either alive or living in Paris, his legendary vision of romance, humor and moral conviction endures. We're looking forward to this freshly revived production.

THE COMING SUMMER...
Contrary to appearances the last couple weeks, we're really NOT going back into the daily music calendar bid'ness. But, that said... there is an irresistible bridge of tunefulness between the current weekends of festivals.
And we all know that if you rely on corporate mainstream media for your supposed news, you'd miss all these things. Along with 'purt near all the music news we bring you. So, we'll feature some select picks of concerts, etc., as we navigate the summer together.
__________
As always, you know that a whole lot more is coming soon — including fresh MUSIC NEWS, PREVIEWS & REVIEWS, and more additions to our massive guide to the MUSIC FESTIVALS of 2017.
Meantime, with all that's about to happen that we report in the foregoing? Go get tuneful!

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
