Mega Mondo 4th of July extended weekend edition — chockfull of events, July 2017

.
.
With the 4th coming midweek, many are playing the holiday weekend both ways — before and after. Whatever you can get away with, do it. Escape the imposed drudgery whilst ya can. After all, it IS called "Independence Day," isn't it?

(And for indie artists, "Independents Day"-!)

Geez, Louise, so much is happening, you'd need 48 pages to print this out!

Whether you're barbecuein', giggin', listenenin', pickin' or jus' grinnin', please be FIRE SAFE, and watch the drunken dummies who don't care about anyone but themselves.

And please remember that pets are absolutely terrified of all the bangs and booms. (As are far too many military veterans for whom explosions did not mean anything pleasant.) So be mindful and minimize your impact, okay?

Now, don't think we were befuddled when we did listings for the 4th of July and all the flashes and bangs. Note that many events with fireworks shows happen this weekend, and you can find them on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday — making it possible to catch four consecutive nights of fireworks hoopla, if you're so inclined. We list events of that kind on all four dates.

ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY(s)!

JULY'S FESTIVAL SCENE, AFTER THE EXTENDED JULY 4th WEEKEND

Used to be that festivals took the middle of summer off, and returned with vigor in the fall. Maybe year-arond school schedules changed everything so that people really aren't gone for the summer anymore. Or maybe too many years of Big Oil extortion ruined the idea of being away on a summer vacation at all. Or maybe the music itself became "destination tourism." Whatever it is? Nowadays, the festival momentum just keeps rollin' along.

CONCERTS, CLUB GIGS, MUSICAL THEATRE, FREE CONCERTS-IN-THE-PARK, 4th OF JULY STUFF, AND MORE

The listings for the 4th of July note that many events with fireworks shows happen early, and you can start catching 'em in multitudinous oodles on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday — making it possible to partake of four consecutive nights of fireworks hoopla, if you're so inclined. We list bunches of events of that kind on all four days and nights so's you can get all starry eyed and stripe-idy.
___

And that means the future is upon us...

This marks the finale for the Guide's "return engagement" with a comprehensive, day-by-day, annotated music events calendar. We won't tell you that you're on your own after this, because not having to do this enormous guide to every day 'n night means that our MUSIC NEWS editions will be much more frequent — and we will preview and profile some upcoming events there. But this lil' lark was an indulgence that is rather indistinguishable from an obsession (yeah, we did tell ya those things, going in, this spring).

So we hope you have enjoyed and found this valuable, by partaking of events and learning about artists and bands you didn't know before. As for making some of you feel stranded? Well, we DID say we were making only a temporary return to all-things-calendarish, specifically to connect the big events of festival season. Really, we felt like we had to do it, after publishing that enormous "ENCYCLOPEDIA FESTIVANICA." Because (a) we didn't want our music venue friends to feel neglected or to risk starving because everybody was only thinking about festivals; and (b) we didn't want YOU to kick yourself (or us) because you missed an all-time fave in concert while you were eating festival food under a tree somewhere.

So we're declaring it "mission accomplished" and moving onward.

We are considering retaining a set of announcements as a NEWS FEATURE to cover all the MUSICAL THEATRE OFFERINGS on a semi-regular basis. It's 'cause nobody else does that, and we hear from readers that they like it and they go because they learned about a great show in our cyberian pages. (And yep, musical theatre is still a happily active and energetic scene, even with "Fringefest" over for 2017). It'll come down to a question of who tells us what they enjoy reading, because reader interest drives how we use our available time around here. So email us your thoughts on content and what you'd most like to see.
___

With that, voilà. (No, not viola. Or violin. C'est voilà, n'est-ce pas?)

Here's our presentation of events, day-by-day (swan song edition). We are proud to go out with a bang, with monda mega coverage of Fourth of July events that start happening July 1st, but include fireworks and all kindsa things...

See ya soon in the MUSIC NEWS editions!

Sat, Jul 1: a Guide FOCUS EVENT...
7 pm "RAISE THE ROOF" — a perfectly-named music benefit for Ugandan Orphans, with performances by LORIN HART, BRAD COLERICK, CORRINA CARTER, BARRETT TAGLIARINO, & DAVE MORRISON, plus "various band-members," in Old Throop Hall at Throop Unitarian Church, 300 S Los Robles, Pasadena, CA.
* THIS is a MUST-READ SECTION: "The last fund-raiser Lorin was involved in was an attempt to raise enough money to buy a house (for the orphans). That proved unsuccessful. But the money raised was used instead, to buy a piece of ground and a whole lot of bricks and mortar. Julius and his volunteers have HAND BUILT an orphanage," reports Dave Morrison.
* More: "It (the orphanage) needs to be finished. The pressing need is for materials to finish the roof and install windows and doors before the rainy season begins in October."
* Still with us? "His organization is called SOT-Uganda. They are a small non-profit — very hands-on — and they provide food staples to a few dozen widow-headed families, do free monthly medical outreaches into the countryside, and support the above-mention kids with community and education."
* Julius Musenero, in Uganda, "is an AIDS-orphan who has grown up to become a father-figure to 150 younger AIDS/HIV orphans."
* "Most of the children are in foster homes, but Julius cares directly for the others — about 35 — who have not found permanent homes. They are currently in a rented house."
* At this special evening, an on-stage song circle will comprise the heart of the program, following brief sets by individual performers, including songs from their individual CDs.
* Bring a dish to share and whatever adult beverage you want; or just come and enjoy.
* "Give whatever you want to the fund" as your admission for the evening.
* This group of local musicians isn't new at this. They report, "Last year we got very person-to-person with Lauren and Rui Mesquita who run MozamBikes, and managed to place 27 sturdy work-horse bicycles with 27 families in rural Mozambique. No middle-man. No money disappearing into advertising and administrative costs."
* If it's hot, bring a small fan if you have one. And c'mon already — YOU'RE worried about going someplace comfortable when you want to help these kids?
* There's also a GoFundMe page for the Ugandan orphanage. "If you can't make it to the show, please drop over there and toss a few bucks into the hat," encourages Dave Morrison.
* Contribute at: https://www.gofundme.com/yae96-raise-the-roof

* This is a big-deal show in a genre being called "ambient." To our ears (and in this case, anyway) that's what happens when acoustic music meets keys with sustained notes, gets into loops, and takes on characteristics of new age and trance music.
* You'll know right away whether you like it or not, by sampling any of the several audio tracks at: http://ghostly.com/artists/tycho
* It's real "KCRW-ish," if that helps.

* Tix still available. All ages, doors at 6 pm.

* Now, director Dan Fishbach and musical director Anthony Lucca bring it back. Marc Francoeur, Susan Kohler, Miyuki Miyagi and Michael Yapujian star in this powerful and bold theatrical experience that was a sensation when it opened off-Broadway in 1968. A prolific singer-songwriter, actor and director, Brel composed and performed literate, thoughtful and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following – initially in Belgium and France, and later throughout the world.
* This revue, conceived by Blau and Shuman FEATURES ENGLISH LYRICS and additional material by the pair and pays tribute to Brel's unique genius. In any language, his songs brim with flair, attitude and European sophistication, retaining their edgy vibe over half a century after they were written. While Brel is no longer either alive or living in Paris, his legendary vision of romance, humor and moral conviction endures. We're looking forward to this freshly revived production.

Happy 4th !

Happy Independence (and Independents) Day!

FIREWORKS GUIDANCE...

There are over 100 fireworks shows in Southern California. Curiously, not all of them happen on July 4th. Some are on July 1st, 2nd or 3rd (see those days listings, above). Most "4th" events, whatever day they happen, feature canned music programs of trad and modern patriotic pop, supposedly timed to the fireworks. Some feature Sousa and rousing military march music. Some forsake tradition and subject fireworks audiences to garage band rock or something even more obnoxious.

We looked at trying to prepare a comprehensive guide for our readers. It's too complex and the required time was overwhelming, with questionable value for you. So we list only a smattering of, like, 28 or so. We advise to check your local city hall website and see what your community is doing, and what night it happens.

WE HAVE FOUR "PICKS" FOR THE FOURTH:

(1) For those wanting the biggest bang, go to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. There is an all-day pseudo fest on the grounds, with kids bounce houses, loud pop/urban stuff emanating from radio-station-sponsored stages, and lots of food trucks. If you drive in and park on the golf course (same place as football game parking), that costs. If you want a ticket inside the Rose Bowl, that costs. It's how they pay for the fireworks show and hoopla which they call "Americafest." You can park free, a mile or two away on Pasadena residential streets, and walk in. Thousands do that. There is no charge to be on the grounds outside the Rose Bowl, and you'll see about 70% of the show in the skies above the Bowl. You can even position yourself to see (and photograph) the famous, huge neon Rose Bowl logo below the sky display — though outside the Bowl on that end, you may be tormented by the incessant banging on the pop stage that won't shut-up. If you can afford it, get a ticket inside the Rose Bowl. It comes with a seat and a full view and good sound for the program, featuring some live music on the field.

Our other thoughts for something innovative that won't get you trapped in traffic when it's over?

(2) Do the daytime (11 am-5 pm) event at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. (it's written-up in the day's events, just below.)

(3) Ride the light rail (Red / Purple Line) to Grand Park in downtown L.A. and enjoy the free festivities and fireworks show there (It's written-up with a link, below). Or,

(4) Find a hilltop and watch multiple shows' flashes from too far away to hear the booms. You can even drive to the top of Mt. Wilson for that experience, or do an afternoon up, night hike down (4.5 miles each way) to the top of 9,400-foot-high Mt. Baden Powell (park in the paved lot at Vincent Gap, about 10 miles west of Wrightwood, on Hwy 2).
___

Whatever you choose to do? Please be FIRE SAFE, and watch the drunken dummies who don't care about anyone but themselves. And please remember that pets are absolutely terrified of all the bangs and booms. (As are far too many military veterans for whom explosions did not mean anything pleasant.) So be mindful and minimize your impact, okay?

5:30 pm WESTERN STANDARD TIME performs the FREE, all-ages, summer concert series in Levitt Pavilion at MacArthur Park, 2230 W 6th St, Los Angeles, CA.
* Don't expect a cowboy / western band. That's a stoic nope and a modern n'uh-uh.
* Western Standard Time has a longer name that appends the two words, "Ska Orchestra" — it's the world’s premier "Jamaican Jazz Orchestra" — and it's "DUKE ELLINGTON meets Jamaica: the big band jazz arrangements of the 1940s colliding with the sound of early Jamaica." So it's best discribed as a kind of innovative retro jazz — Jamaican jazz. And people are flocking to it, by the thousands.
* There are more than 20 world-class jazz musicians in a “standard” Western Standard Time performance.
* The band's featured performers include Grammy noms and winners, and some have performed on Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy television broadcasts, and/or played with international stars and on major motion picture soundtracks.
* Bring your favorite beverage and tasty snacks. Excepot no alcohol, and they mean it — the cops will bust you outta the clear blue.
* Bring a folding lawn or beach chair. If you sit on a blanket, you will not be able to see.
* Bring a jacket; nights still get chilly near even a small lake.
* Parking free is possible, but requires being innovative and walking several blocks.
* Best to ride the Red / Purple Line light rail to Westlake/MacArthur Park Station, and allow time to walk around the bottom end of the park, through the tunnel and into the side that's isolated by the elevated road; that's how you reach the band shell.

As extensive as our recommendations are? That's really just a lil' rundown on bunches o' concerts, festivals and other events in California through the conclusion of the July 4th holiday.

There are HUNDREDS more FESTIVALS happening all over North America, and we describe 'em in the detail you need in the Guide's "ENCYCLOPEDIA FESTIVANICA" at: http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2017/04/2017-music-festival-guide-current.html

But that's it for our concert calendar. You just saw how massively inclusive it, and we just can't keep doing these things. So we're returning the emphasis to MUSIC NEWS, and as part of what we cover, reporting on some select events. And yes, we do maintain the "Encyclopedia Festivanica." But comprehensive day-by-day lists of everything good enough to recommend? We're bidding that bon voyage again, and this time that ship is really sailing.

= = = = = =

Okay, we lied a little. We ARE taking time here — temporarily — to include a select few things (recommendations) after July 4th.

(If the fireworks nuts don't burn Southern California to the ground, these are good places to go.)

JULY 20th... in any other country -- if they had accomplished what the US did on July 20th -- THIS would be a national holiday. It's the day in 1969 that humans first set foot on the Moon. It should be "National Space & Exploration Day," but the corporatists are too cheap to allow our government to declare any more holidays. They claim it costs them too much money in "lost productivity," even though consumer spending is through the roof on any holiday when the stores and amusement parks and eateries are open. We have always been BIG advocates of making July 20th a holiday. Really now, how many times have humans set foot on a world other than our own? Yeah. So today we'll think of you, Buzz Aldrin, and all your Apollo astronaut colleagues, and Buzz, of your continuing advocacy for returning to a robust space program that GOES somewhere! Ahead in the Guide...

THE COMING SUMMER...

We'll keep you updated on MUSIC NEWS, all the festivals that feature Folk-Americana and/or acoustic music, and we'll bring you plenty of feature stories on whose in the studio, who's collaborating or touring with who, and what they're working on. And we'll continue to bring you news of special events, along with some previews, reviews and select "picks" (the recommendations kind, not the kind you use on strings; we've never had any of those printed with our logo, though we would if someone wanted to sponsor that.)

That said... contrary to appearances the last month or so, we're really NOT going back into the daily music calendar bid'ness. But there is SUCH an irresistible bridge of tunefulness from all the spring weekends of festivals until summer heat abates them, so we ARE doing full-blown music calendars through the end of the July 4th holiday.

We all know that if you rely on corporate mainstream media for your supposed news, you'd miss all these things.

Along with 'purt near everything else we bring you.

It certainly does seem like Big Corporate Media only promotes and reports on soundalike pop pablum with incongruously unnecessary vocal gymnastics... we don't do that, and we wouldn't cover that stuff even if they didn't.

But the point is, big corporate media just plain refuses things and then claims those things are "non-commercial." (Which might explain why cable news, exclusively sponsored by Big Pharma ads, is so bad.) Big media certainly refuses to cover real organic acoustic music made without loops of electrocution sound effects — from Frankenstein's lightning storm or wherever they find that annoying stuff.

So just hit the mute button on them and turn here. We cover all kinds 'o real acoustic music and offer plenty of links to hear it in our news and reviews features. And, yes, we'll feature some select picks of concerts, etc., as NEWS FEATURES, as we navigate the summer together.
__________

As always, we invite you to join us and to let us know what YOU are listening to, and what artists or bands just sent you swooning and need to be shared with others.

That's your part, so you'll know that a whole lot more is always coming soon — including fresh MUSIC NEWS, PREVIEWS & REVIEWS, and more additions to our massive guide to the MUSIC FESTIVALS of 2017.

Meantime, with everything happening through these festival-packed, arrival-of-summer weekends? Go get tuneful!

♪ The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS — and views of interest to artists everywhere — more specifically to musicians and the creative community and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music. That includes both traditional and innovative forms. From the deepest roots to today’s acoustic renaissance, that’s our beat. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues (now undergoing a major update), and inside info on FESTIVALS and select performances in Southern California in venues from the monumentally large to the intimately small and cozy. We cover workshops, conferences, and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kinds o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to bluegrass and pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to all the swamp water roots of the blues and the bright lights of where the music is headed now.
