WELCOME to the ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC NEWS, our weekly news feature companion to the ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC CALENDAR. Here, you’ll find news for artists and music fans alike, ranging from the immediately useful to the merely informative, from gig opportunities and festival deadlines to early bird discounts, from venue openings and closings to career tips, and hot tips for acoustic music fans.
.
The Acoustic Americana Music Calendar with frequently updated posts of upcoming events well into 2009, is available at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com and various other places around the web. We post links for current editions on our Myspace page, but new editions of the calendar are no longer there. Myspace has made changes that limit the size of posts, and that makes it far too time-consuming and ponderous to post the calendar there in far too many small pieces.
+
Our myspace site, www.myspace.com/laacoustic is still the place to go for news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show, and its new TV counterpart that launches soon.
.
LATEST NEWS FEATURES always post separate from the calendar.
+
MOST RECENT previous News Features posted OCTOBER 7, 2008 at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2008/10/news-features-oct-7-edition-acoustic.html

Recent weeks and months’ editions are available on Blogspot at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com; older archived editions are available on the myspace page (www.myspace.com/laacoustic), by using the “View All” button and scrolling, and if you don’t see what you want, then journey farther back by using the “older entries” button and scrolling, as many times as necessary. You can go all the way back to when acoustic music was made by trees crashing to the floor of the primeval forests when the dinosaurs got too rambunctious.

1) ANNUAL EVENTS OFFER “TASTY” WEEKEND OPTIONS
This October, or if you prefer, Rocktober, is filled with events, and there seem to be more every year, with many artists making tour stops and many local events. 2) “DANIEL PEARL MUSIC DAYS” FEATURES TWO L.A. EVENTS
The Fourth Annual tour runs Oct 10-26, with events across the country. They include the “TASTE OF FOLK MUSIC / TASTE OF ENCINO” this Sunday, Oct 12, and an L.A. show that features SONiA of DISAPPEAR FEAR on Oct 26 at the Hotel Café in Hollywood.
+
Sunday’s “Taste” event is in conjunction with the CALIFORNIA TRADITIONAL MUSIC SOCIETY (CTMS) and the Encino Chamber of Commerce’s 21st annual “Taste of Encino” street fair. Music is on three stages, plus a storytelling stage, in the adjacent park at 16953 Ventura Bl (1 blk W of Balboa Bl), Encino 91316; info, www.ctms-folkmusic.org. See the separate News Feature for full details.
+
The Oct 26 show is part of a global event and US tour, with its L.A. stop at the Hotel Café, 1623 N Cahuenga Bl, Hollywood; 323-461-2040; www.hotelcafe.com. The show features SONiA of DISAPPEAR FEAR (www.disappearfear.com), peace activist, award-winning singer-songwriter, and past guest on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” SONiA is a headliner there, and throughout FODfest, (FOD = Friends of Danny) the annual concert tour honoring the life and ideals of DANIEL PEARL. SONiA tells us she is “honored to be part of a tour where the concepts so closely match the ideals that inspire [my] music.”
+
Performing in the lineup with SONiA at the Hotel Café show are TODD MACK, DANNY GILL, LAUREN ADAMS, JAKE WALDEN, JUDITH de los SANTOS, MICHELE JUSKO, NECTARPHONIC, KALANI, & ALANA LEFKOWITZ.
+
FODfest is one aspect of “DANIEL PEARL WORLD MUSIC DAYS,” created in response to the 2002 kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl at the hands of extremists in Karachi, Pakistan. Danny's family and friends came together to work towards a more humane world, forming the DANIEL PEARL FOUNDATION, whose mission is to promote cross-cultural understanding through journalism, music, and dialogue.
+
Daniel Pearl was also a talented musician. Danny believed that music can cross cultural divides. SONiA shares that belief, and combined it with her love of language in her last album, "Tango" which features songs in Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish and English, and had its world premiere on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” The album was inspired following her tour of the Middle East in 2006, where she performed in bomb shelters and Palestinian villages during the war between Lebanon and Israel.
+
Danny joined musical groups in every community in which he lived, leaving behind a long trail of musician-friends spanning the entire world. Commemorating Danny's October 10th birthday, World Music Days uses the universal language of music to encourage fellowship across cultures and build a platform for "Harmony for Humanity." Through artists who join in World Music Days, Daniel Pearl lives on.
+
FODFest concerts are open to the public, and free. In addition to the Hotel Café show, find an event near you at www.fodfest.org. More about Daniel Pearl and World Music Days at www.danielpearlfoundation.org

3) GINA FOR MISSING PERSONS LAUNCHES “SQUEAKY WHEEL TOUR ® 2008”
On Fri, Oct 17, at 8 pm, the monthly “AMERICANA MUSIC CIRCLE” brings “A very special edition” dedicated to the “GINA for Missing Persons Foundation” as part of “THE SQUEAKY WHEEL TOUR 2008” with JOHN ZIPPERER & FRIENDS, “The Circle,” (performing songwriters in-the-round) LILY WILSON (www.lilywilson.com) a past guest on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” and frequent backup vocalist for MELISSA ETHERIDGE, plus BOB WOODRUFF (www.bobwoodruff.com), CYDNEY ROBINSON, www.myspace.com/cydneyrobinson, and performing host LAUREN ADAMS (www.laurenadams.com) also a past guest on radio’s “TttT,” and special guests. The show is at Kulak's Woodshed, 5230-1/2 Laurel Canyon Bl, North Hollywood; 818-766-9913; web simulcast at www.kulakswoodshed.com.
+
We like it when we can tell you about musicians involved in causes that benefit society. Last week (Oct 7 News Features) we reported on the GoGirls Music Fest tour, with dates in Southern Cal on Oct 16, 17 & 18, and that tour’s emphasis this year on organ donor awareness.
+
We are equally pleased to tell you about this Oct 17 show in North Hollywood for the Third International “SQUEAKY WHEEL TOUR ® 2008,” (SWT), running worldwide Oct 17-Nov 4. Performers participating in SWT earmark their concerts or events to profile one or more missing persons in their community. They profile that missing person during their show, and ask attendees to take a flyer to post throughout their community.
+
To date, over 300 missing people profiled by GINA have been FOUND. A daily updated list of the events, locations, dates and most importantly, the missing to be profiled may be FOUND at www.411Gina.org/squeakywheeltour.htm
+
Already an acclaimed concert series, the “SQUEAKY WHEEL TOUR ®” raises awareness for those who go missing every year in the US and other countries. The CLEMENTINE band (www.clementineband.com) is headlining the US national tour. This 19-day event will draw attention to several hundred missing people, each profiled by artists participating in concerts worldwide. This global community effort is supported by the families of the missing and nonprofits including Tommy Foundation (OR), In Hope (IN), The Cue Center (NC), The Maryland Taskforce for the Missing and Unidentified, Tennessee Alliance for the Missing, Project Jason (NE), Team Hope, The Nevada Child Seekers and The Morgan Nick Foundation (OK).
+
JANNEL RAP, band member of CLEMENTINE and founder of SWT, has intimate knowledge of the missing. Her sister, musician GINA BOS, disappeared Oct 17, 2000. Jannel’s heartache over the unknown status of her sister became a fight to gain attention for all missing and an avenue to bring hope to their families. 850,000 missing persons reports are made each year in the US. 110,000 of those cases go unsolved. The majority of families face the same dilemma that Jannel encountered when Gina went missing: when their loved ones simply vanish with no lurid or dramatic story, they garner no media attention. Rap felt that she had to do something to change that, and she brought the concept of the “Squeaky Wheel Tour®” to life.
+
All artists performing at Kulak’s Woodshed donate their performances; venue is supported by donations, and asks $10 per attendee in lieu of a cover charge.

4) FUR DIXON & STEVE WERNER PLAY SOLD-OUT CONCERT AT THE GETTY
We noted for you, well in advance of the Sep 19 show, “There’s more at stake here than you having a good time. This is a test for the Getty, to see if the L.A. crowd will support locally-based Americana artists.” That show was at L.A.’s Getty Museum, one of the city’s most prestigious venues, with Fur & Steve, the local Americana up-and-coming star duo. You responded, filling the venue to capacity, and both the Getty and the crowd won. The show is reviewed in FolkWorks, at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35693/167
+
Whether or not you were there, you can catch Fur & Steve performing FREE at Sunday’s “TASTE OF FOLK MUSIC / TASTE OF ENCINO.” Check the News Feature on the event, in this edition.
+
Of course, you’ve heard FUR & STEVE perform live, with and without PAUL MARSHALL, who accompanied them that night, on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” The radio show brought you the world premiere of the duo’s latest album, and they scored a “Listener Favorite” there, as well. They’ve been hits everywhere they’ve played, including their featured set at the 2008 Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival. The Getty’s publicity put it very well: “Equally at home anywhere under the western sky, well-traveled folk festival favorites Fur and Steve will take you on a rollicking musical joyride through the back roads and highways of the West. Their dazzling two-part harmonies, spectacular yodeling, awesome guitar picking, and wise-cracking humor framed by their old- and new-timey traveling songs, folk songs, and singalongs will delight oldsters and youngsters alike.” Artists info, www.myspace.com/furandsteve.

5) DALE LADUKE’S "LONE RANGER" IS LAMA “SONG OF THE YEAR” FINALIST
Executive Producer of the annual LOS ANGELES MUSIC AWARDS, AL BOWMAN, called performing songwriter DALE LaDUKE with the news. Dale says, “He personally picked my song, ‘Lone Ranger,’ for this award. I'm one of five finalists nominated for ‘Single of the Year (Adult Contemporary)’ at the LA Music Awards. There is a ‘voting party’ for the five finalists at the legendary Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, Thursday, October 16 at 8 pm. The crowd attending will vote for the winner.” Dale adds, “Come early though, as parking is usually difficult.”
+
Dale’s song, “Lone Ranger,” was previously named a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”
+
The Whisky A-Go-Go is located at 8901 Sunset Bl, West Hollywood 90069; 310-652-4202. Adv tix, 310-652-4202. Expect a mostly-electric night, though you can vote for DALE LaDUKE and the other nominees in various categories.
+
The evening is only $10, and nominee KRIS SEARLE tells us, “You get to see a myriad of amazing bands play live and battle it out for these prestigious awards.” More at the Los Angeles Music Awards website, www.lamusicawards.com.
.
.
6) DALE LaDUKE, DAVE MORRISON IN THE NEWS
Each of them has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and the show had the world premiere of Dave’s CD that is now getting global airplay. They’re teaming-up for a show Sunday evening, Oct 12, at the Coffee gallery backstage in Altadena, and offering a special discounted ticket price of $10. With Dale’s status as a Los Angeles Music Award “Song of the Year” finalist, it should add great energy to a show that was already sure to be a good one. Meanwhile, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune did a fine story on Dave Morrison in time for the concert, though they got the ticket price wrong. It’s available online at www.sgvtribune.com/gettingout/ci_10680461?source=email

7) NATIONAL GUITAR WORKSHOP INSTRUCTIONAL DVDs NOW IN BEST BUY
They’ve been a phenomenal success, with 2008 marking their 25th anniversary season for National Guitar Workshop, and the 10th anniversary for their DayJams rock music summer day camp for kids. In addition, they operate an online music lesson site, www.workshoplive.com. “They” are DAVID SMOLOVER & NATHANIEL GUNOD, owners of National Guitar Workshop, DayJams, and WorkshopLive.
+
Beginning last week, their presence reached one of the nation’s leading retailers, as Best Buy began selling the on-line WorkshopLive instruction in over 430 stores. The in-store offerings include 7 gift cards and two Christmas song DVDs.
+
The WorkshopLive product line at Best Buy includes guitar, keyboard, voice, or drum lessons, or a 30-Day or 90-day subscription to the entire catalog of 2,500 lessons. David and Nathan add, “Or they could buy a DVD that teaches how to play popular Christmas songs on guitar or piano. They're great stocking stuffers.”
+
Since this is something new, you may need to look for it. Check the musical instrument aisle, where guitars, keyboards and microphones are sold. The cards will be hanging on hooks, and the DVDs will be there or with the music books.
+
To find Best Buy stores that carry the WorkshopLive offerings, go to http://DayJams.com/bestbuy.php

8) LISBETH SCOTT GETS HBO SERIES HIT, WILL SING ON JAY LENO SHOW
LISBETH SCOTT and NATHAN BARR recently teamed-up to write and perform a new song for HBO's hit series, “True Blood.” And, Lisbeth will perform on the Jay Leno “TONIGHT SHOW” on NBC on Monday night, Oct 13.
+
Lisbeth has performed live, several times, on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” She gained fame performing the music in the controversial MEL GIBSON film, “PASSION OF THE CHRIST,” then she riled religious fundamentalists by talking about spirituality rather than parroting any strict dogma. So, of course, all that and her fine musicianship, and she was a hit with “TttT” listeners.
+
The next episode of “True Blood” airs Oct 12 at 9 pm on HBO. You can check out which songs are played on each episode at http://cts.vresp.com/c/?iDealmedia.net/f155178d89/a370bc62f3/d6edca1868 (click on episode 6 for Lisbeth & Nathan’s song).
+
Lisbeth's done an a capella remix of the tune, featuring 36 voices - all hers! You can get that, exclusively, at www.kosmicmusic.com
+
As for her latest collaboration, the New York Times says, Barr's music is “‘fierce..." and Billboard Magazine says what “TttT” listeners already know, that Scott's voice is "astounding."
+
All of Lisbeth's CDs, “Rough and Steep,” “Passionate Voice,” “Dove,” and “Climb,” are available at www.amazon.com and on www.CDbaby.com as well as at www.lisbethscott.com

9) “BACKSTAGE L.A.” TO GO WEEKLY, ON TV AND XM RADIO
We’ve reported before on SANDY JACOBSON and her L.A.-area cable TV show (www.backstagelosangeles.net) that launched two years ago with performing guests ranging from folkies to classic rockers. Recently, we asked her what the future would hold, since Time-Warner announced the closure of ALL its “cable access” local studios, effective the end of the year. Sandy told us, “By October 31st, we will have shot 22 shows for the 2008 Season (4 more shows than the total shot during the 2007 Season). With that in mind, I have been searching out other options.” She promised she would have news soon, and here it is.
+
Sandy says, “I spent this past weekend working out a deal that will take our show internationally, via internet broadcast with paid sponsorship! We will also be adding an XM-radio show to the package, also with paid sponsorship! We will also be amping up the production schedule to produce one radio show, and one television show PER WEEK! We will also be in a position to produce music videos, T.V. commericals, and radio spots for other people - adding another dimension to our services! All of these changes will be happening over the next two months, and we will keep you updated on the schedules, air dates/times, stations, channels, etc., as soon as possible.”
+
Congratulations, Sandy!
.
.
10) SOCIAL NETWORK FOR MUSICIANS, WITH INVESTOR PAYOFFS
“Fat Company” magazine reported on this. We had to re-write it because, well, it wasn’t very literate in its original form. The subject is “SellABand” (www.sellaband.com), a social network aimed at enabling artists to begin careers in music. Reported in the magazine’s feature, “9 Niche Social Networks That Aren't for Everyone,” that particular network offers opportunity to artists and investors alike. But approach it carefully, because it’s hard business. Artists who sign-up become members, but this ain’t some casual myspace presence. Any money your music attracts to the site is split three ways, with shares to you, the backers of your music, and Sellaband. The major opportunities for you as an artist / member don’t come until you raise $50,000 from site users (non-members and members) who contribute “because they like your music.” But if you do raise that much, you get set-up with professional A&R and studio time. “Financiers receive a copy of the recorded product and artists are required to ‘pay it forward’ and give away three tracks online for promotional purposes. All other tracks are for sale,” and the three-way split applys.
.
.
11) THIS WEEK’S WEB VIDEOS: “DRILL, BABY DRILL” & “SPIES WHO LOVE ME”
As Rod Serling used to say, “Submitted for your approval…” Here are four animated cartoons by MARK FIORE that are up-to-the-minute topical, as funny as anything on SNL, and we can’t resist any of ‘em. They’re

12) CLEVER PROMO AWARD GOES TO MURPHY’S FLAW
They are clever self-promoters, as well as good musicians who have won, twice, at the prestigious Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest. They just wrote to tell us, “We've been watching the stock market pretty carefully of late and we're convinced the time is right: Murphy's Flaw is pleased to announce the Initial Public Offering of Flawco, Inc. (a tender, holding company)
+
“Our business plan will be modeled on several we've read about in the paper: You pay for us to perform 10 songs, we sing one, and then we promise to sing the other nine at a later date, but at greater volume.
+
+Then we go on Craig's List and offer to perform those nine, sing one, and offer the other eight on Recycler.com. We keep this up until eventually we've sung our original 10 songs -- but we've been paid for 55!
+
“It can't lose. And if, by some freak chance, all our audiences should want us to sing our songs at the same time, we'll just ask the National Endowment for the Arts to send in extra bluegrass bands. We'll call it a rescue. Not a bailout.
+
“Bottom Line: Everybody wins!
+
“This is a smart investment opportunity: Flawco stock is worthless, so you know it'll never go down in value, even in a bear market.
+
“Still not sure? We understand; due diligence is important.
+
“So if you want to check out our assets, we'll be on-stage at the "A Taste of Folk Music" Festival this Sunday, Oct. 12, at Encino Park, 16953 Ventura Blvd. We're on shortly after 11:30, but the festival starts at 10 a.m. and goes to 5 p.m. Great music, great food. Kettle Corn, probably. Full details are here www.ctmsfolkmusic.org/festival/October/default.asp
+
“Many other fantastic bluegrass bands who could well be part of the eventual "rescue" plan will also be appearing. They, of course, do not issue stock. What can we say -- some people don't have the Flawed Vision.
+
“There will be Flaw T-shirts for sale for $10, and we'll be issuing certificates for one share of FlawCo stock.
+
“Operators will be standing by -- if you miss the chance to get in on this business opportunity, you'll be glad you did!
+
“See you Sunday!

13) HERE’S OUR INVESTMENT ADVICE
Finally, we are all affected by the talking heads on TV and radio and the print and web media coverage of how we’re the ones holding the empty bag, after the pirates of big business raped, pillaged and plundered in orgies of greed that went unchecked and unregulated for the past eight years. We do have a creative solution to offer. The following numbers are based on things as they were at the beginning of the week, so all the numbers except the last one are now lesser amounts. Still, …
+
If you had purchased $1,000 of AIG stock one year ago, you would have $42 left. With Lehman, you would have $6.60 left from your $1,000 investment. With Fannie or Freddie, you would have less than $5 left. But if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have had $214. Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle. It's called the 401-Keg. And believe it or not, that observation came to us from an American working as a civilian in Afghanistan.
+
Of course, here at the Acoustic Americana Music News and “Tied to the Tracks,” we encourage you to buy CDs. Not the bank “Certificate of Deposit” expensive wallpaper kind, but the Compact Disc music kind. You can enjoy the music anytime, regardless of how broke you are. And buy ‘em from the artists at their live shows, so they get the money directly. Perhaps to invest in beer.
.

That’s it for this week.
