WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+
WHERE TO FIND WHAT WE DO…
+
WE’RE ON BLOGSPOT.COM where the format allows us to present the massive content of the Guide in easy-to-index published form. The Guide is waaaay too comprehensive to fit anywhere that imposes size limitations (yep, size matters). We began publishing on Blogspot in early 2008.
+
WE’RE ON NO DEPRESSION as a new presence, and enjoying that site. Find us there at http://community.nodepression.com/profile/TiedtotheTracks
+
WE’RE IN FOLKWORKS with the latest of the “Somewhere Out There” column, published May 1 and available online at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35941/3176. (We had already received over 16 pages of compiled feedback about the current column, before May 9!) We contribute occasional reviews or feature stories to FolkWorks. You can read the work of many good writers there, and you can sign-up for a free FolkWorks e-newsletter, too, all at www.FolkWorks.org
+
Our MYSPACE PAGE has news of the syndicated “Tied to the Tracks” radio show. After a long presence on MySpace with the Guide’s predecessor publication, we had to move on, because that site now accepts only short posts. But it’s where you can find archived Acoustic Americana Music News editions published prior to Spring, 2008. (We don’t update the Myspace site very often, or even check its esoteric, myspace-only email. So please DON’T email us through that site. Myspace “friends” are welcome!) You can find what we have there at www.myspace.com/laacoustic
+
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
+
PLEASE DO COMMUNICATE WITH US about anything related to the Acoustic Americana Music Guide and / or the Acoustic Americana Music News, at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.
+
PLEASE DON’T send us anything through myspace email. It’s esoteric, it cannot be auto-forwarded into a “real” email account, and we just can’t keep up with it. (Myspace “friends” are great, and we DO welcome you there!) But, communicate through email only at the above address. And, yes, we get HUNDREDS of emails every week, so please give us as much advance notice as possible for your event!

Sat, Jun 6; Fri-Sun, Jun 5-7, in Barstow, CA:
First Annual “HARVEY HOUSE HULLABALOO” at the old Santa Fe (now Amtrak) Depot / Harvey House complex in Barstow, CA. Three days of living history includes music, western art, Harvey Girl re-enactors, old west cowboy impersonators, vintage wagons and railroad cars, historical encampments, fast draw shootout, cowboy auction, skit competitions, historical Mojave River trail ride, vendors, BBQ, and more, with “top dollar prize for competitions.” Sponsored by the Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce and the Reenactment Guild of America. Free camping (dry camping) available.
+
English expatriate FRED HARVEY took a train ride through the West in the 1870s, and he was appalled at the horrible conditions offered travelers, including trackside eating houses with terrible food at outrageous prices. He made a deal with the Santa Fe Railway, and replaced the deplorable with world-class hospitality on the frontier. The Harvey House was an oasis of civility, with attractive (and quite unavailable) young women in crisp black and white uniform dresses – the famous “Harvey Girls” – and fine food for a reasonable price.
+
Barstow’s Harvey House was the centerpiece of “Casa del Desierto,” which opened in 1911. Known as the “Jewel of the Desert,” the beautiful complex of hotel, restaurant and train station served proudly through many decades as a place of rest, relaxation, and wonderful food for the weary Santa Fe and Union Pacific rail traveler and for those driving the legendary Route 66. It served civilian and military travelers, and the service was always impeccable. It was all nearly lost in the Landers Earthquake in the late 20th century, and suffered the cheesy addition of a Greyhound station thattempted to replicate the stone and brick architecture with papier mache.
+
Today, Casa del Desierto has been resplendently restored, and will be the centerpiece of this new festival. Calico “Ghost Town” is nearby, for those seeking variety. Event and motel info, contact Linda Ramirez at HarveyHouseHullabaloo@yahoo.com or 909-917-9569. Re-enactors wishing to take part, email Shirley Horn, mollyboutlaw@aol.com or call Lester P. Larceny at 760-252-3693, to receive packets and participant info.

Most of the activities of CMF are held at or near the Cora Wilson Stewart Moonlight School in the historic First Street Arts District. In addition to music, various arts and heritage events are held during the festival, including presentation of the “Appalachian Treasure Award,” that recognizes individuals dedicated to the preservation of Appalachian culture and traditions. “A Day in the Country Folk Art Show & Sale” and the “Appalachian Arts and Craft Fair” are held in conjunction with the festival. A car club meets at the Cafe next door every Saturday for breakfast, and they park their assorted ‘babies’ out front for you to peruse too. Eliza Gilkyson grew-up in a musical family with a father renowned for his film scores. Now based in Austin, Texas, her Southern Cal concerts are homecoming events, and her live performance on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” remains a talked-about listener favorite. Her brother Tony Gilkyson is an in-demand L.A. musician, but Eliza has played the world. In addition to Eliza’s eighth and newest CD “Beautiful World” (2008, on Red House Records), Joan Baez chose two of Eliza’s songs for her own new album, “Day After Tomorrow.” In 2008, Eliza was chosen to deliver the keynote address to the International Folk Alliance Conference and to perform on the “Cowboy Train” across Canada. Along with her concert tours, she plays benefits for women’s shelters and environmental causes. Her songs reflect a consciousness of our times and love and longing.

3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

Sat, Jun 6:
5-7 pm GRUPO FALSO BAIANO with special guest mandolin prodigy EVA SCOW at the free LACMA “Latin Sounds concert night” at the L.A. County Museum of Arts, 5905 Wilshire Bl, L.A. "The young musicians … will make you dance, cry, laugh and marvel at their instrumental skill and love for a music that is centuries old but sounds as fresh as ever.” - San Francisco Bay Guardian.
+
Grupo Falso Baiano performs a blend of traditional Brazilian choro music with modern influences such as jazz, flamenco and samba. Choro is Brazil’s first national music, born in the cafés of Rio in the late 1800’s, and reflects the melding of African rhythms with a melodic and harmonic structure most closely resembling Baroque Classical music. GFB's unique exploration of choro spans nearly 100 years, including everything from traditional to contemporary classics, as well as original arrangements and jazz-influenced reinterpretations. They began as a trio in 2003 with members Brian Moran (seven-string guitar), Zack Pitt-Smith (flute, clarinet and saxophone) and Ami Molinelli (percussion), and evolved into a quartet when Jesse Appelman (mandolin) joined the lineup in 2006. In addition to performing and touring, the members of Grupo Falso Baiano are committed to extending the reach of choro music, and have collaborated with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra and the “Around the World” Music Program, bringing choro music to students throughout California. Choro is a traditional form of popular Brazilian music, similar to jazz, blending African rhythms.

Sat, Jun 6; (Jun 6 & 7); “SHOW OF THE WEEK / SHOW OF THE YEAR” in L.A.:
5 pm THE KINGSTON TRIO takes the stage at the “L.A. ACOUSTIC MUSIC FESTIVAL” in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the Santa Monica Pier. There is a stunningly stellar lineup of THE KINGSTON TRIO, NATALIE MacMASTER, NANCI GRIFFITH, BRUCE COCKBURN, DAVID LINDLEY, RICHARD THOMPSON, SLAID CLEAVES, ELIZA GILKYSON, JIMMY LaFAVE, JOEL RAFAEL BAND, DAVID BROMBERG & THE ANGEL BAND, SARAH LEE GUTHRIE & JOHNNY IRION, THE WOODY GUTHRIE TRIBUTE (RIBBON OF HIGHWAY, ENDLESS SKYWAY), THE REFUGEES, & STONEHONEY.
+
The Kingston Trio have been around since 1957, and like the Beatles, they created a national audience for their songs and influences that changed music. Their song, “Tom Dooley,” gave birth to the Folk Revival when it went gold in 1958. Deeply rooted in American popular culture, their songs are finally recognized as timeless, and not simply as statements of a time gone by. Over 300 of the songs for which they are known are now available as cell phone ring tones, including “500 Miles,” “M.T.A.,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” and “Wimoweh,” and historical songs they perform, like “Old Joe Clark” and “Ramblin’ Boy.” Despite the death last year of founding member Nick Reynolds, and of one of the group’s original inspirations, Travis Edmonson in May, they carry on with tuneful, thoughtful, and feel-good music. Their performance isn’t just entertainment, it’s music history.

Sat, Jun 6; in Ojai:
6 pm DAVE STAMEY with JON & BETSY ELLIOTT play “The Very First Ojai Valley Cowboy Show,” a benefit concert, at Matilija Auditorium, 703 El Paseo Rd, Ojai. Includes a raffle and chili tasting. Free pre-show wine tasting. Dave has won ‘purt near every award that can be won in the western music world, and he’s performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”
+
The beautiful Ojai Valley has been home to cattle (and the people who raise them) since 1837 when it was granted to Fernando Tico as Rancho Ojai. Vaqueros, then cowboys, roamed the Valley, and their spirits live on. You can still find plenty of horses to ride and it's not unknown to see a cowboy or two walking down the main street of town.
+
Modern Cowboys (and cowgirls), ranchers and people that work with horses, cattle and other livestock, have developed a culture that is a blend of frontier and Victorian values.
+
“The Very First Ojai Valley Cowboy Show” is a spirited and public way to celebrate and preserve this culture and the historical, but vanishing, ranching tradition of California. The hazardous work of the modern rancher/cowboy has also bred a tradition of self-dependence and individualism, with great value placed on personal honesty, responsibility and integrity. These values are exemplified in poetry and songs.
+
Proceeds from this concert will benefit the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, and programs supported by the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Ojai. Tix $35.

Natalie MacMaster amazes audiences with her lightening fast step dancing, performed simultaneously with her stellar fiddle-playing. She’s one of Canada’s most beloved and accomplished artists, master of the Cape Breton style, with Grammy nominations, numerous Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammy) and Canada’s East Coast Music Awards (the best roots music honors in the world). Many of her 10 albums have gone Gold, and her collaborative partners include Yo Yo Ma, Alison Krauss, Carlos Santana, Bela Fleck, Mark O’Connor (artist in residence at UCLA), and many others in music’s top tier. It’s not just her footwork and precise fiery fiddling of reels, jigs, airs, waltzes, strathspays, marches and traditional folk tunes. When she performed the annual Fireworks Concert with the L.A. Phil in the Hollywood Bowl, the entire symphony rose to give her a standing ovation.

Sat, Jun 6:
7 pm PIRATES OF THE BLACK SWAN plus RON ELY opening, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
Let’s let a newspaper review tell the story:
“Ron Ely and Pirates of the Black Swan set sail at the Coffee Gallery Backstage
”By Naughty Mickie
”I have caught singer/songwriter Ron Ely several times at the Fret House in Covina's open mic night and have enjoyed his selections, so who was I to say no to an invitation to see him and a very different band in Altadena? I was encouraged to attend the show in pirate attire. I dragged out my costume box and complied, complete with my trusty scabbard at my side and wondered what the night would bring.
”There was a decent sized crowd at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, although I would have liked to have seen a few more for a Friday night. Booker Bob Stane draws some of the most amazing acts to this intimate venue and you always come away satisfied. Check out the schedule at www.coffeegallerybackstage.com.
”Now to the main event. Ron Ely took the stage first. He gave us a full set of original and cover tunes, many with a sea or sailor theme. His is quite formidable on the guitar, decent on the harmonica and he has a very pleasant voice. He made us feel comfortable and even invited us to sing along, and many did. His time flew by and when he relinquished his spot, it seemed almost too soon. The audience definitely could have sat through more.
”Next up was the headliner- Pirates of the Black Swan. Now for some, the word weird might be the first thing to come to mind, but after a few tunes, you would be thinking more like cool or fun. This group has all the swagger and attitude you would expect from pirates without the pretentiousness.
”The core of the band consists of the male Captain and female First Mate on guitars, female crew members on mandolin, fiddle and tambourine and a male crewman on drums, harmonica and other instruments. All sing and they even had a few guests join them for numbers, as well as a dancer.
”This isn't your ancestor's pirate music-- it's rock and folk and ... hard to explain. Pirates of the Black Swan played the theme from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" and a few other traditional songs, but they also offered up selections such as "Lady Marmalade," "Let It Be" and "Brown Sugar" with a few seemingly original pieces thrown in. Yet this still doesn't capture them because their show is truly a show-- they act, interact with the audience and each other, dance, joke and more.
”The crowd quite enjoyed the concert and many made a point to pause to chat with the band members before leaving the venue. I also overheard quite a few people asking when the group would be back again.
”Would I see this band again? You bet. Would I bring a friend? I would anyone who would like a good time that is a little out of the ordinary.”
+
James Potkey of the Pirates of the Black Swan adds, “Batten down the hatches. Secure the main lines, for this ship be a rockin' tonight! Captain Ron Ely will be performing his maritime music with his trusted guitar and harp, singing songs from ports of call. Then, me hearties. Belay yourselves, for the Pirates of the Black Swan board the main deck to perform bone rattlin' pirate rock in full pirate regalia, with nautical wit and mayhem. Guaranteed to get your peg leg a tappin' with nautical wit and seafaring music. We are a five piece crew with strong vocals, two guitars, woodwinds, harmonica and fiddle.” Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Some dancing and singing by the wenches. A costumed extravaganza. Show up in pirate gear if it suites you. No parrots, please. Come aboard and sail with us.” More at www.myspace.com/piratesoftheblackswanmusic

Sat, Jun 6:
7 pm RICHARD GREENE with the SOUTH BAY YOUTH ORCHESTRA in Marsee Auditorium, El Camino College, 16007 Crenshaw Bl, Torrance; 310-329-5345. Richard Greene just won the 2009 “Music Legend” award at the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival. When it comes to authentic, old-time fiddle music, he is known as "one of the most innovative and influential fiddle players of all time." He grew up in L.A. studying classical music until his encounter with the pyrotechnic fiddling of Scotty Stoneman; from then on Richard was a fiddler. He was the 1st place winner at the very first Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest in 1961, and he first attained larger prominence with Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys in 1966. The legendary Monroe said of him, “There’s not a man in the country that can do what Richard can do.” He went on to found the revolutionary folk-rock group, Seatrain, with the Beatles’ George Martin, pioneering the first use of electric violin in rock music. His advanced technique and intense yet "cool" tone galvanized audiences and influenced a generation of fiddle players, including Darol Anger, Alison Krauss, Sam Bush and Stuart Duncan.
+
In 1974, Richard's return to acoustic music occasioned the invention, with David Grisman, of "New Grass" or "New Acoustic" instrumental music, now a mainstay throughout the world's acoustic music festivals on a select few radio shows, like “Tied to the Tracks.” He founded the trailblazing Greene String Quartet, creating the first-ever amalgam of “Jazz-Folk-Rock-Chamber Music.” His many acclaimed CDs in the folk and bluegrass genres have been honored with Grammy and IBMA awards, and one, “Sales Tax Toddle,” was Grammy-nominated for “Bluegrass Album of Year.” He won the 1997 Grammy for “Best Instrumental Performance of the Year” and was nominated in ‘98 for “Best Bluegrass Recording of the Year.”
+
Richard has served as leader of his own groups, including Muleskinner, The Greene String Quartet, The Grass is Greener, and Richard Greene & The Brothers Barton. Throughout the year he headlines at major festivals, including The “Telluride Bluegrass Festival” and “Durango Meltdown.” Currently, he leads seminars nationwide at The Mancini Institute, the RockyGrass Academy, the Festival of Fiddle Tunes, the Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camp, the Rocky Mountain Fiddle Camp, The Swannanoa Gathering, and dozens of ad hoc workshops. 2008 marked the debut of his own piece for bluegrass violin and orchestra, "What If Mozart Played With Bill Monroe?" When bestowing the Legend Award, the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest noted the organization’s pride in having played a part “in this legend’s early career and welcomes back its first-year winner to bestow an award he has so richly earned.” More at www.richardgreene.net

+
He’s the delightful guitarist / songwriter from “A Prairie Home Companion,” and the 1983 National Finger Picking Guitar Champion. Pat Donohue’s style blends blues and folk in a critically-acclaimed display of guitar artistry. The late Chet Atkins said, "Pat Donohue is one of the greatest finger pickers in the world today."
+
The Los Angeles Times, which hardly ever notices anybody in the Americana music world, wrote that Pat Donohue is "a masterful guitarist and talented singer-songwriter of blues, folk and jazz." His talents are displayed weekly in his radio performances, where his guitar playing, writing, and singing are featured regularly and praised by host Garrison Keillor. Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss, Loose Ties and other national performers have recorded his original songs. Two of his well-known and played parody (funny) songs are, “Sukiyaki” and “So You Want To Play Guitar.” This guy is a star and the show will sell out. He plays one other Southern Cal show, Sunday night at 7 pm, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, and that one will sell-out, too.

7 pm SIOBHAN QUINN & MICHAEL BOWERS play the Duncan House Concert Series, in Ventura; reservations get directions, at scottd13@roadrunner.com (preferred); alternate 805-323-5157 (leave message). Alexandria, Virginia-based Michael Bowers brings harmonies, folk, and the blues. Scott Duncan, of the Duncan Hose Concert series, says, “Siobhan's voice is incredible. She was once the lead singer of an amazing Irish band. It’s folk, with an attitude. It’s acoustic rock with a traditional foundation. It’s campfire music, but around an urban campfire. It’s blues at its heart with a 21st century sound. However you classify or categorize it, it's good.
+
Quinn is a 2006 WAMMIE winner (Washington Area Music Association Awards) for Traditional Folk Vocalist, and Boston Folk Festival Finalist for songwriting. She can sing in Irish, and belt the blues. Bowers is a 2005 Kerrville New Folk Finalist/ 2006 South Florida Folk Finalist, and known for his songs that literally paint stories...they've even been called "folk operas." Together, in 2007, Siobhan Quinn and Michael Bowers have been selected as Kerrville New Folk Finalists, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artists, Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Formal Showcase Artists, Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Formal Showcase Artists, Performance Alley (formal showcase) Artists at the International Folk Alliance Conference, and Alternates for the FAR West Folk Alliance Conference. They both were instructors at the Rocky Mountain Song School this year, and performed on the Wildflower stage at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival.
+
John McLaughlin, of WMUD in College Park, Maryland, says, “Siobhan Quinn and Michael Bowers are among the married duos whose lived-in harmonies enhance the beauty of the songs they sing, in their travels around the country. I enjoy their music, and think you will too.” More at www.dreamersloversandoutlaws.com/home.html
+
They are here directly from playing the Washington (DC) Folk Festival, and this is one of only two West Coast shows. They play Kulak’s Woodshed Friday night and the Duncan House Concert Series on Saturday. Scott Duncan adds, “A big personal favorite, if you love great voices and harmonies, this is the duo for you. Clearly, this duo is on the rise!” Expected donation for artists, $15.

Formerly in Simi Valley and now moved to Palmdale, they have resumed their crowd-pleasing and unique brew of risqué lounge and hillbilly jazz, asking you to “Imagine the illegitimate love-child offspring of The Sons of the Pioneers and Cheech and Chong.”
+
LENNY DODGE says his influences are varied, but I can definitely hear hints of people like Bruce Cockburn, J.J. Cale and even Peter Frampton in his uptempo acoustic folk rock pop -- in other words, the man knows how to play. His weapons of choice include a Taylor 815 jumbo, a Rainsong jumbo and a Breedlove Jumbo 12 string, offering a deep, full sound. And he's no slouch as a songwriter either -- the dude's got a way with words. More at www.eptvhd.com. Listen on his site to "Hesitation Blues," "Penny for Your Thoughts," "Is Love Enough," "Out of Time," and "Man in Love."
+
TRISH LESTER has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” which had the world premiere of her CD, “Plymouth Belvedere.” The song went on to get airplay on NPR and has been heard on “Car Talk.”

Shakespeare's gripping tale is a timeless political thriller about one of the most notorious political assassinations in history. It examines the delicate balance between liberty and government order. Sun, Jun 7:
7 pm PAT DONOHUE, delightful guitarist / songwriter from “A Prairie Home Companion,” at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
The 1983 National Finger Picking Guitar Champion, Pat Donohue’s style blends blues and folk in a critically-acclaimed display of guitar artistry. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “We only get Pat Donohue once per year. He comes to us right after The Prairie Home Companion does The Greek Theater. Other than a big symphony date in Dana Point, this will be his only gig in Southern California. Now is the time. An outstanding singer, guitarist and wit. A SUPER SHOW.”
+
The late Chet Atkins said, "Pat Donohue is one of the greatest finger pickers in the world today."
+
PAT DONOHUE is "the" resident guitar/entertainer genius on "A Prairie Home Companion." He always stays-over in L.A. after the big annual "PHC" concert to play his “favorite area jewel box showroom, The Coffee Gallery Backstage.” The Los Angeles Times, which hardly ever notices anybody in the Americana music world, wrote that Pat Donohue is "a masterful guitarist and talented singer-songwriter of blues, folk and jazz." His talents are displayed weekly in his radio performances, where his guitar playing, writing, and singing are featured regularly and praised by host Garrison Keillor. Chet Atkins, Suzy Bogguss, Loose Ties and other national performers have recorded his original songs. Two of his well-known and played parody (funny) songs are, “Sukiyaki” and “So You Want To Play Guitar.” This guy is a star and the show will sell out. Tix, $20 (a steal).

Sun, Jun 7; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 & 9:30 pm ROY ZIMMERMAN, brilliant comedic songsmith, at The Fret House, 309 N Citrus, Covina 91723; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com. Roy Zimmerman took his satirical songs to real America last year, driving 12,000 miles and flying 12,000 more to do 107 shows in 47 states. Now, he brings us his new show, “Roy Zimmerman: Real American.” Roy has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and his visits there and recorded songs have been huge hits with listeners. Impresario of the nearby Coffee Gallery Backstage, Bob Stane says, “Clever songs, high humor, political parodies. Funny songs about politics and the state of humanity. Find out what's funny about war, poverty, ignorance, bigotry, neo-conservatism, homophobia, greed, lust and fear.”
+
“Real American” is 90 minutes of Zimmerman’s funny songs about ignorance, war and greed, featuring new material infused with his on-the-road experiences and driven, as always, by the headlines. Some have wondered if political comics will have a harder time without the easy target of the Bush administration. Zimmerman isn’t worried. Among the songs he’ll perform tonight are, “Ted Haggard is Completely Heterosexual" which he sang for the new HBO documentary “The Trials of Ted Haggard,” directed by Alexandra Pelosi, and his tune, “Buddy, Can You Spare a Trillion Dollars?” that landed him a mention on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, an unaccustomed honor for a folkie.
+
He says, “In this election we heard a lot about ‘Real America’ as exemplified by Joe, whose name isn’t Joe, the Plumber, who’s not a plumber.” In one new song, Zimmerman imagines what Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher’s hit single might sound like.
+
Roy Zimmerman, who "plays well with others," has shared the stage with such diverse talents as George Carlin, Arlo Guthrie, Kate Clinton, Bill Clinton, Arianna Huffington, Bill Maher and Paul Krassner. Zimmerman founded and wrote all the material for the satirical folk quartet THE FOREMEN, who recorded for Warner Reprise throughout the Nineties. As a solo artist, Roy has released five albums. A video of his performance of his song “Creation Science 101” made the front page of YouTube and has brought over 730,000 views and 11,000 comments, and Roy adds, “many of them coherent.”
+
The Los Angeles Times says, "Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer." Call venue for $ of tix.

Sun, Jun 7:
7 pm THE BOBS return to McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl (Pico at 31st), Santa Monica 90405; www.mccabes.com; 310-828-4403; tix, 310-828-4497. Grammy-nominated vocal acrobats (and certifiable nutjobs), THE BOBS are celebrating their 26th year of skewering the classics, breaking all the rules and clear-cutting their own unique path in the world of vocal music. Known for their witty, adventurous original songs (multiple ASCAP award winners) and breathtaking vocal reinterpretations of everything from classic rock to classics that rock, The Bobs have played everywhere from Lincoln Center to L.A.'s Universal Amphitheater to Berlin's Passionkirche. Together since 1981, the original "band without instruments," has toured the world several times, released 14 albums and several concert DVDs, appeared on the Emmy Awards (with Jason Alexander as the fifth Bob), and lent their voices to countless commercials and films. A documentary about the band, “Sign My Snarling Movie: 25 Years Of The Bobs,” was released by Coldfoot Films in 2007. Their most recent CD, “Get Your Monkey Off My Dog,” was released in 2007.
+
The Bob's endurance is trumped only by their unrivaled creativity as they continue to infect audiences with their humor and musicality. To quote a recent review, "At an age when most surviving pop groups grind out a living with warmed over retreads of greatest hits, the Bobs still shine, breaking new ground each time they tunnel out of the sanitarium. The twin keys to the group's creative safe deposit box are unflagging dedication to vocal excellence and utter disregard for everything else. The Capitol Steps are occasionally as funny, and the Roches and the Mockingbirds sometimes achieve similar a capella excellence." The Bobs play McCabe’s tonight, and the Coffee Gallery Backstage on Tue, Jun 9 (if you thought you would miss them because you’re at the L.A. Acoustic Music Festival). Call venue for $ of tix.

8 pm “CROSBY TYLER'S 10 SONGS OF AMERICA” acoustic solo tour arrives at The Blue Café, 1708 Pacific Coast Hwy, Huntington Beach 90742; 562-592-1302; www.thebluecafe.com. His music debuted on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and now his success is enabling him to take his show on the road. With dates in three states, Canada and the UK, Crosby has a few tour stops in Southern Cal.
+
Indeed, Crosby Tyler’s band includes PETER CASE, DJ BONEBRAKE, AMY FARRIS, SHELDON GOMBERG, PHIL PARLAPIANO, MIKE FORTUNATO, JEFF TURMES, the late DUANE JARVIS was a member, and Crosby’s CD was produced by PETER CASE.
+
CROSBY TYLER’s first recorded tracks were heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” He’s been touring relentlessly, opening for the great PETER CASE (Plimsouls), twice a guest on “TttT.” Crosby has been filling-in for Peter’s bookings since February, when Peter needed emergency open heart surgery.
+
Paul Kerr, writing in “Americana UK,” says of Crosby Tyler, "Performing solo, the quality of his writing, his way with a tune and his engaging presence made for a fine night. Tyler was able to produce a set of songs that tapped into American folk sources with touches of humor and, at times and in a more serious vein looked at the underbelly of American society."
+
Rob Adams, in “The Herald” (Scotland) says, "A guitar and harmonica rack aside, the red nose is Tyler's only prop in a show that reveals the soft-hatted, careworn voiced Los Angeleno to be as much theatre director as troubadour, marshalling a rich cast of characters, including the clowns, drunkards and crazies of the Tex-Mex flavored Payasos Borrachos Y Locos, war veterans, fugitives, refugees, hobos, bozos and sundry bluesmen, and making them all come alive." "The young musicians … will make you dance, cry, laugh and marvel at their instrumental skill and love for a music that is centuries old but sounds as fresh as ever.” - San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Sun, Jun 7; (Jun 6 & 7); “SHOW OF THE WEEK / SHOW OF THE YEAR” in L.A.:
8:30 pm NANCI GRIFFITH & THE BLUE MOON ORCHESTRA take the stage as the closers for the “L.A. ACOUSTIC MUSIC FESTIVAL” in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the Santa Monica Pier. There is a stunningly stellar lineup of THE KINGSTON TRIO, NATALIE MacMASTER, NANCI GRIFFITH, BRUCE COCKBURN, DAVID LINDLEY, RICHARD THOMPSON, SLAID CLEAVES, ELIZA GILKYSON, JIMMY LaFAVE, JOEL RAFAEL BAND, DAVID BROMBERG & THE ANGEL BAND, SARAH LEE GUTHRIE & JOHNNY IRION, THE WOODY GUTHRIE TRIBUTE (RIBBON OF HIGHWAY, ENDLESS SKYWAY), THE REFUGEES, & STONEHONEY.
+
Nanci Griffith is a Grammy winner who has released 18 albums that have sold more than any female Texas singer-songwriter. She has performed worldwide many times. Tonight, the festival will enjoy her full concert set, until 10 pm.
+
Her latest CD, “The Loving Kind,” is due June 9 on Rounder Records. It continues her genre-defying trademark of combining newsworthy issues and matters of the heart, always with great skill, accessible lyrics, and an ability to capture life at its most complex.
The new album’s title track chronicles the case of the Virginia couple who finally broke the barrier to mixed-race marriage. “Across America” engenders hope in a time of change. And “Still Life” is an indictment of the Bush years. Griffith, for years, performed wearing an LBJ button as a symbol of the Texas with which she identifies.
Her legion of worldwide fans sings along to her songs “Outbound Plane,” “Trouble in the Fields,” “Live at the Five and Dime,” “Listen to the Radio,” “It’s a Hard Like Wherever You Go,” and to her signature covers of Kate Wolf’s “Great Divide” and Julie Gold’s “From a Distance,” preferred by folkies to the Bette Midler cover. She’s come a long way since the Kerrville Folk Festival campfire music circle, where she played at age 14.

It’s a tribute to 50 years of music by Judy Collins, in a benefit the Lyric. Tonight’s venue is the New York Society for Ethical Culture, 2 West 64th Street, New York, NY. Judy Collins performs with an impressive array of special guests including Suzanne Vega, legendary songwriter Jimmy Webb, Matt Herskowitz (Piano), David Rozenblatt (Drums, Percussion), Rufus Cappadocia (Cello), and Amy Speace (Guest vocals). Julia Reinhart is acting as Managing Director for the event. Tix available at 212-239-9190.
+
Americana-rock singer-songwriter Amy Speace was part of Joe's Pub 10th Anniversary Gala in tribute to Judy Collins last October, and Amy contributed the title track to “Born To The Breed - A Tribute to Judy Collins, Vol. I” that features legends Dolly Parton, Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Chrissie Hynde, Leonard Cohen and others.
+
Amy Speace’s music has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” as has the music of most everyone else involved with the show or that album. Amy is a Jersey City-based songwriter receiving widespread critical acclaim for her sophomore release “The Killer In Me,” which mines the mystery and heartbreak of relationships gone wrong -- and right and wrong again. “Killer In Me,” recorded with James Mastro (Robert Plant, Ian Hunter) and Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Let's Active), forges deeper and darker lyrical and musical terrain than her 2006 genre-hopping Americana breakthrough CD, “Songs For Bright Street,” which earned Speace high praise in the US and Europe where she toured and shared the stage with Judy Collins, Nancy Griffith, Ian Hunter and Little Feat. NYC's top AAA/folk radio station WFUV named her to its "Top 16 Artists To Watch" list this year and Judy Collins has said "Amy's a remarkable artist, writer and singer-I am a total fan." More at www.amyspeace.com and http://amyspeace.musicdish.net.
+
Rufus Cappadocia has toured throughout the Americas and Europe with numerous groups and is known for his collaborations with artists from all over the world... from the Balkans to the Caribbean, from West Africa to North America. He has toured extensively with Urban Tap and The Paradox Trio. Cappadocia has just finished recording for Pest Records with Badal Roy (who played tabla with Miles Davis) and Barney Mcall (who plays piano with Gary Bartz); a Canadian release with Hugh Marsh (violin) and Bary Romberg (drums); and is currently recording a new project, Vodou Jazz Ensemble with "Bonga" Jean-Baptiste as well as a CD of unaccompanied solo cello. The Lyric Chamber Music Society, in just eleven seasons since its debut in the spring of 1998, is recognized by musicians, the press, and audiences as one of the preeminent chamber music organizations in the country. Mon, Jun 8; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7 pm “SQUEEZEBOX 101” tonight as the free “J.A.M. SESSIONS” series continue at the Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Bl East, Hollywood 90068; 323-GO1-FORD; www.FordTheatres.org; box dinner orders 310-652-3797. Grounds open two hours early for picnics, so pack your basket and a bottle of vino and head for the Ford. Tonight, session leader OTOÑO LUJAN of CONJUNTO LOS POCHOS and accordion diva GEE RABE involve participants in playing the accordion from zydeco to Tex-Mex to Cajun music. If you don’t have a squeezebox, the Ford will provide some. Dance instructor Karen Redding, who led last week’s JAM here, adds, “The Ford is one of Los Angeles' hidden gems for entertainment. It's a beautiful venue tucked into the hillsides of LA. You're gonna like it!”
+
About OTOÑO LUJAN and CONJUNTO LOS POCHOS:
Their original song, “Margie’s,” earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Formed in the summer of 1997, the four-piece ensemble began with Otoño Luján and Elliott Baribeault. The ensemble specializes in conjunto music, a small-group dance music driven by accordion and bajo sexto. Today, “Los Pochos” presents a genuine L.A. expression of traditional conjunto music to a steadily-growing audience that cuts across race, nationality and social status. The band's name initially came about to address the perceived peculiarity of a bunch of [primarily] acculturated Mexicans (Pochos), barely speaking Spanish and playing "Norteño" music (border music from Northern Mexico). Ironically though, this music - having stemmed from the merging of European and Texas-Mexican cultures in the late 1800's - continues to reflect the process of Pochismo (or acculturation) through its lyrics and music. Luján is without the band tonight, but he will perform at the Ford Amphitheatre with Conjunto Los Pochos on Sun, Jun 28, at 7:30 pm as part of “SqueezeFestL.A.”
+
About Accordion Diva GEE RABE:
An accordionist since 1975, Ms. Rabe has won major awards for her performance, including the Accordion Federation of North America's “Virtuoso Western Classical” and “Virtuoso Jazz” competitions in 1984 and 1985 respectively. Ms. Rabe is diverse in her performance styles and currently performs with VAUD AND THE VILLAINS (folk / blues / zydeco) and the HABERDASHERY QUARTET (chamber jazz / Gypsy jazz / tango / Balkan). In 2007, she was the accordionist in the Getty Villa production "Tug of War," which was selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the top ten productions of the year.

Mon, Jun 8; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm GRUPO FALSO BAIANO presents an evening of new music with special guest guitarist CAPITAL and others, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.

Will Ryan tells us, “It’s in the Western-themed strip mall behind Denny's Restaurant, and it’s the semi-famous patch of land known to the world as “Gower Gulch.” Semi-famous because, for most of the previous century, it was a notorious hang-out of genuine cowpokes, cowboy movie extras and poverty-row Western producers. And now, not only will Gower Gulch witness the CACTUS COUNTY COWBOYS, but our entire “CACTUS COUNTY ROUND-UP!” Will adds that they performed here recently, “And it's terrific room, and the food is great too! Audiences can wine and dine (or just have a few drinks of any persuasion)” as, together with their guest stars, as Shelley Hemmil says in "How to Relish Southern California!" Will and his cast of musical characters put-on “The best gol-durned Cowboy variety show West of the Los Angeles River!”

Formerly in Simi Valley and now moved to Palmdale, they have resumed their crowd-pleasing and unique brew of risqué lounge and hillbilly jazz, asking you to “Imagine the illegitimate love-child offspring of The Sons of the Pioneers and Cheech and Chong.” They feature Saturday night shows with booked acts, and an open mic series, with additional events to be added (keep an eye on their website, if you’re in that area).
+
As for tonight, they tell us, “Like Peter Frampton once said, ‘C'mon, babe, let's do it again!’ If you feel like we do, pick up your guitar, your tambourine, your best poem, whatever, and head on down to Butler's for our notorious Open Mic Night. Once more you'll have ten minutes to strut your stuff. You can sing, dance, juggle, recite incredibly bad poetry, whatever. But you've got ten minutes, and ten minutes only. We'll actually time you. Or, more precisely, Sparky the Faithful Egg Timer will time you. The usual rules apply. No profanity, no firearms, no human sacrifice. We're basically doing this on a first-sign-up, first-gets-to-play basis, so if you're interested, sign-up begins at 6 pm the night of the show.” More, including all the Open Mic rules, are on Butler's web site.

Tue, Jun 9; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm THE BOBS at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
The Capitol Steps are occasionally as funny, and the Roches and the Mockingbirds sometimes achieve similar a capella excellence." Tix, $27.50.

+
Rob Adams, in “The Herald” (Scotland) says, "A guitar and harmonica rack aside, the red nose is Tyler's only prop in a show that reveals the soft-hatted, careworn voiced Los Angeleno to be as much theatre director as troubadour, marshalling a rich cast of characters, including the clowns, drunkards and crazies of the Tex-Mex flavored Payasos Borrachos Y Locos, war veterans, fugitives, refugees, hobos, bozos and sundry bluesmen, and making them all come alive."
+
Amidst his coming and goings, you can catch him Jun 27, at 9:30 pm, at The Gypsy Den in Santa Ana; Aug 8, at 7 pm, at Mama Hillybeans in Tehachapi; and Aug 22, at 9 pm at the Ranch Party in L.A. More at www.crosbytyler.com and www.myspace.com/crosbytyler10songsofamericatoday.

Wed, Jun 10; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm THE RHYTHM ANGELS plus ARCHIE FRANCIS & THE CORNPOP ORCHESTRA, at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
This is a "two headliner" show.
ARCHIE FRANCIS & CORNPOP ORCHESTRA are a 3-piece band “which is a blend of sophisticated, traditional, not always country humor” led by 15-time Academy of Country Music (ACM) Award-winner Archie Francis on guitar, washboard, and vocals. Some folks say he looks at life a little too funny. His life is just chock-full of good music and great musicians. Archie has been playing drums in bands most of his life, and those bands include those of Roger Miller, Freddy Fender, Johnny Rodiques, Hank Thompson, and many, many more. Archie has 11 ACM awards for "Best Drums" and 4 more ACM awards for "Best Non-Touring Band."
+
THE RHYTHM ANGELS are the duet of CELESTE KRENZ & REBECCA FOLSOM and their seamless harmonies and smart lyrics, both earthy and transcendent. As happens with traveling troubadours, careers found the two solo artists circling around each other for years. Celeste hails from the ranch country of North Dakota, while Rebecca comes from the mountains of Colorado. Their individual accomplishments are extensive and impressive.
+
CELESTE KRENZ's album “Slow Burning Flame” reached #11 on the Gavin American Chart, and landed her in the top 100 selling artists on Amazon.com, along with placing second in the 2007 CMT/NSAI song contest.
+
REBECCA FOLSOM earned “Best of BBC Radio and Television” and was in the top 5 finalists at the “Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist Showcase.” Together, as a duo, their track record includes performances at Colorado’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Gerald Ford Amphitheater, Nashville’s “Summerlights Festival,” and the Boulder Theater, and they’ve held-down spots on the main stage at venues that include the “Rocky Mountain Folks Festival” in Colorado, Texas’ renowned “Kerrville Folk Festival,” California’s “Strawberry Festival,” the “Sweet Pea Festival” in Montana, and many more. Tix, $15.

8 pm SIXTH WAVE plus SLIM CHANSE at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com.
+
SIXTH WAVE is L.A.’s own six-voice a cappella, jazz-pop-rock group, and they’re nationally acclaimed and award-winning as a vocal collective. What is “a vocal collective?” It’s what happens when you bring a group of singers together who all have extensive resumes, ranging in everything from opera to rock and roll, from jazz clubs in NYC to recording studios in L.A. All of these elements come together to form this creative soup, who combine music with a wonderful collective wit. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Not only are they funny, but they like each other, which is infectious.”
+
SLIM CHANSE was “in another life, under another name, a pretty-well-known composer,” or at least he made a living at it. But one day it all seemed pretty silly. So he chucked it, along with his college teaching job, and set out to seek his misfortune. Slim writes “beyond-genre songs” (he calls them “alt-alt”) with words like “ephemera” and “illegitimati” in them, about the oddball characters you meet everyday if you take the time and listen to their stories. He tosses-in a lot of stories of his own, some of which are true, and has been known to launch into a Shakespeare soliloquy or a philosophical diatribe at the slightest (even imagined) provocation. And for someone as funny as he is, he can sure play the guitar, and always has great players with him. Venue impresario Bob Stane calls him, :Completely unique, vaguely threatening, and always entertaining.” Tix $15.

It’s a new venue, said to be beautiful, serving food, beer & wine, 25 mins E of Pasadena off the 210 Fwy. The venue is part of the newly-renovated Claremont Packing House. Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

Neko Case has an ability to connect on an uncommonly deep and meaningful level. Produced in association with Goldenvoice, this L.A. show comes during the second leg of Neko’s North American tour, in support of her critically-acclaimed new album, “Middle Cyclone.” The New York Times Magazine praised her voice as “a force of nature" and The New Yorker has called “Middle Cyclone” "'the best album of her career by a generous margin." Additionally, Rolling Stone's 4-out-of-5 star review declared Case "Indie's greatest singer," while Spin's 9-out-of-10 review stated, "America may need Neko Case's back-to-nature fantasias more than ever." The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200, the highest debut of the year for an independent release.
+
This tour brings Case to the largest venues of her career, backed by her core band of Paul Rigby (guitar), Tom V. Ray (bass), Kelly Hogan (vocals), Jon Rauhouse (guitar) and Barry Mirochnick (drums). Elle magazine described Case’s live shows as "A little like being flattened by the sound of a jet as it passes overhead." Tix $35 & $30.

Fri, Jun 12; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm KACEY JONES with DORIAN MICHAEL plus TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Both Kacey Jones and Tracy Newman have performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”
+
KACEY JONES with DORIAN MICHAEL deliver an evening of intelligent humor and great music. Kacey Jones live performance-interview session on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” had the phone ringing off the wall. And that’s most appropriate for her celebrated off-the-wall, humor-filled, songs. Audiences have been laughing with Kacey Jones for decades, and laughing right along with them are People Magazine, USA Today, and “A Prairie Home Companion” host Garrison Keillor. Her new album, “Donald Trump's Hair,” is the hilarious follow-up to her previous CD, Every Man I Love is Either Married, Gay, or Dead....LIVE!”
+
"People need a good laugh in times like these" says Kacey. And nobody knows how to spin life's little miseries into a good laugh, accompanied by great music, better than Miss Jones. Her new CD, from its title cut homage to "The Donald" to Kacey’s "God Save The Queens" homage to drag queens, is loaded with songs that bring laughter and smiles. The May 2009 issue of Music Connection Magazine says: "The irrepressible Nashville-based singer-songwriter Kacey Jones returns with ‘Donald Trump's Hair,’ a new collection of uproarious songs including ‘Christmas in Rehab,’ ‘Whatever Happened to Kenny Rogers' Face’ and the title song, dedicated to what sprouts from the financier's fantastic follicles. Highly recommended."
+
If it all seems off the wall, it's totally sane in the world of Kacey Jones. Hers was, after all, the brilliant mind that conceived one of Nashville's most unique and revered cult acts, ETHEL & THE SHAMELESS HUSSIES, who broke above the waves in the late ‘80s to mainstream nominations as “Comedy Act of the Year” on MCA Records. Kacey produced Kinky Friedman's critically acclaimed project, “Pearls in the Snow,” featuring Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett, and Dwight Yoakam. Three of her original songs can be heard in the multi-award winning cult film “Sordid Lives,” and, as Music Supervisor, she wrote the music for the hilarious stage play, "Nipples to the Wind." Why is no surprise that Kacey’s record label, IGO Records, is sponsoring a "Comb-Over Contest" to celebrate the release of “Donald Trump's Hair”-? Contestants with winning comb-over potential may enter at www.DonaldTrumpsHair.net
+
Miss Jones will be accompanied by longtime friend and guitarist extraordinaire, Dorian Michael, for an evening of great fun and great music. More at www.KaceyJones.com

TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS (aka the barefoot LORIE DOSWELL and harmony junkie GENE LIPPMANN) open at 8 pm. Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Be in your seats. Don’t miss their opening song – everything you’ll love about them starts happening right away.+
+
Tracy is the only singer-songwriter anywhere who has an Emmy and a Peabody Award. Most of her original songs, including “Waffle Boy” – winner of the 8th Annual “Great American Song Contest” -- debuted on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” en-route to global airplay. In addition to her identity as a musician, Tracy is a well-known comedy writer in L.A., creator of the Jim Belushi series, “According to Jim,” and co-writer of the famous “coming-out” episode of the “Ellen” series. Tracy is equally known for her involvement as co-founder, performer and director with the popular improv group, The Groundlings, having shared that stage with the likes of SNL’s Laraine Newman (Tracy’s sister), the late Phil Hartmann, Julia Sweeney, Jon Lovitz, and many others.
+
Tracy is rapidly gaining recognition as a singer-songwriter. Her debut CD, “A Place in The Sun,” is, in a manner of speaking, the culmination of her career shift from writing TV sitcoms to pursuing music full time. Tracy has always been a songwriter, but this muse was on hiatus for a while as she joined the writing staffs of various shows, including “Cheers,” “The Nanny,” “The Drew Carey Show” and her aforementioned award wins.
+
Tracy’s remarkable ability to craft a great song extends well beyond her wonderful sense of humor. Her compassion is evident in her profound understanding of human nature, as in her award-winning “Waffle Boy.” Another of her most heartbreaking but uplifting songs, “Mama, I Know You Ain’t Santa,” (co-authored by Lynne Stewart) won second place in the prestigious “Unisong Contest” in the “Seasonal/Specialty” category. Be sure to request “Laraine,” her song about sisterhood, motherhood, and life after fame, and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” about the upsetting experience of driving her daughter’s teenage carpool. More on Tracy, including videos, at www.tracynewman.com
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane says, “Tonight’s combination of Tracy Newman and the brilliant and acerbic humorist, Kacey Jones, makes the perfect show for those who remember the wit and wisdom of the 1960s folk era, as well as their children who will, like, totally, get the humor, (and can explain any computer technology references to their parents.) This will be a very fun and memorable night.” We concur completely and enthusiastically. Tix for this show are the bargain-of-the-week at $15.

As always, more to come, as we (believe it or not) continue to make updates to all the months of 2009 in the “long look ahead” posts.

…So many truly fine shows, so few evenings and weekends to see them. With a new spirit of HOPE in America, why not celebrate by going out for a tunefully good time?

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out: you’ll need 130 pages just to print-out the events for these 13 days!
+
Just check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the paper, either, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
