WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Send to us at tiedtothetracks@hotmail.com.

Thu, Jul 16; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
6 pm SLIGO RAGS play the Redondo Beach Pier, in the Horseshoe area, Redondo Beach. SLIGO RAGS is named in FolkWorks among L.A.’s “Best of 2008 / Top Ten” bands. They played radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” on St. Patrick’s Day, 2007, and at that time they had EIGHT of the Top Ten songs on one Celtic Music Chart. No other artist or band repeated even once anywhere in the Top 100. And they earned a “Listener Favorite” on radio’s “TttT.” Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario Bob Stane says, “Such a talented group. Drawing big crowds without it bein’ a wake. As usual, they’ve been winning awards, but modest they are.”
+
Two-time winners of the “Orange County Music Awards” for “Best Folk Band,” this dynamic ensemble presents Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the local and not-so-local Celtic music scene by storm. Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After," still gets international airplay, and was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine. Says the San Diego Troubadour, "This band can light up an atmosphere as dim as the Guinness stout you just ordered at the bar... Sligo Rags really know their Celtic music." Don't be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz, and swing manage to sneak their way into the act. More at www.sligorags.com. Free show.

Thu, Jul 16; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm GONZALO BERAGA QUARTET at the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue - The Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reserv 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Gonzalo is considered one of the best guitar players in America. You will hear a mix of Gypsy Jazz and Latin acoustic music with most memorable melodies. The quartet brings passionate, virtuoso guitar, plus incredible clarinet player Rob Hardt and a fine rhythm section.
+
After touring the world extensively with the John Jorgenson Quintet, native Argentinean Gonzalo Bergara is presenting his new CD “Porteña Soledad” with glowing reviews all over the world, including Editor’s Pick in Guitar Player magazine. Meanwhile, Vintage Guitar magazine called it “a masterpiece.”
+
Gonzalo began playing professionally at age 16 in Buenos Aires. By 17 he was already fronting his own blues trio on national TV in his homeland. He arrived in America in 2000, and has performed and recorded with hundreds of artists including Tim Hausser from Manhattan Transfer, Sylvie Vartan, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, John Jorgenson, Howard Alden and more.
+
The Gonzalo Bergara Quartet is Gonzalo on lead acoustic guitar, Jeffrey Radaich on rhythm guitar, Rob Hardt on clarinet and tenor saxophone, and David Tranchina on upright bass. The music is heavily influenced by Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France, a plethora of traditional jazz styles, and a hint of his native Buenos Aires.
+
"Gonzalo Bergara’s music exists in a way that very little music does. He has lavished such care on every phrase, built each arrangement with such lapidary precision and pared away anything extraneous, the music becomes sculpture. It has weight, density, gravity. This is serious. And deeply moving." Gonzalo has performed all over the world including Croatia, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, Argentina, Brazil, England, Scotland and all the major US. festivals, including The Montreal Jazz Fest, Playboy Jazz Fest, Sweet and Hot Jazz Fest, Django Reinhardt Fest in Germany, Suev Guitar Fest in Italy, Merle Fest, Strawberry Fest, the various Django Fests in the US, and lots more. 8-10 pm STEVE DORFF & BOBBY TOMBERLIN at Kulak's Woodshed, 5230-1/2 Laurel Canyon Bl, North Hollywood; 818-766-9913; info / web simulcast at www.kulakswoodshed.com - named for “Best Web Simulcast” in “The Best of 2008 / Top Ten” in FolkWorks, at www.folkworks.org/content/view/35788/166.
+
STEVE DORFF has evolved into a gifted composer in every musical field. Industry observers have dubbed the multiple award winner an enigma. There is no way to capture the diversity he regularly displays scoring major motion pictures, television, theater, or via an array of 1 Song Of The Year honors.
+
His many songs have been sung by some of the greatest artists of our time: Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, George Strait, Vanessa Williams and countless others. An Emmy nominee for five television compositions, his credits are exemplary and include such stalwarts as "Murphy Brown" and "Murder She Wrote". You'll find his name on evergreens like "Growing Pains", "Alien Nation", "Spenser: for Hire", "Major Dad", "Columbo", "Reba" and the ABC hit "Rodney". His many TV and cable movie credits include the Emmy nominated CBS mini-series "Elvis", the Hallmark Hall of Fame "Rose Hill", the animated Christmas classic "Annabelle's Wish", "Babe Ruth", "The Quick and The Dead", "Moonshine Highway" and "The Defiant Ones".
+
Dorff’s many movie songs and scores have been featured in "Every Which Way But Loose","Bronco Billy", "Blast From The Past", "Rocky IV", "Pure Country", "Tin Cup", "Michael","Eight Seconds", "Dudley Do-Right", "Dancer, Texas", "The Last Boy Scout", "Curly Sue" and "Honky Tonk Man". Perhaps Dorff’s most ambitious move to date has been a giant leap into his first love, musical theater. He currently has two projects making their way to the stage: "Josephine" (The Josephine Baker Story) and "Pure Country" (The Musical). And, Steve Dorff is the musical director for the new CMT hit series, "The Singing Bee." Check out the new CD, “Steve Dorff And Friends - theme From Growing Pains & Other TV Themes.” More at www.stevedorff.com
+
BOBBY TOMBERLIN is a Grammy, CMA, and ACM nominee. In 1990, Mel Tillis gave him his first publishing contract. He’s since written for Reba McEntire’s company and spent four years as Grand Ole Opry star Bill Anderson’s sound engineer. Bobby has had great success including the Top 10 single by Darryl Worley, "A Good Day To Run" as well as singles by Chely Wright, Diamond Rio, Ty Herndon, Linda Davis, Russ Taff and Lee Greenwood. Bobby’s songs have received 8 BMI awards and he co-wrote the number 1 country and Top 5 AC single and CMA, ACM, and Grammy nominated “One More Day” and co-authored the inspirational book by the same name.
+
His original "One More Day" has received over 3 million radio performances according to BMI. Bobby’s songs have been included on numerous Gold and Platinum projects including the recent double platinum Faith Hill CD "Fireflies", the gold CD "Everything is Fine” by Josh Turner and the platinum CD by Rodney Atkins "If You're Going Through Hell".
+
Bobby has just had a song recorded by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Lee Lewis and T.G. Sheppard for T.G.'s new duet project. Other artists whom have cut his songs include Terri Clark, Kenny Rogers, Joe Nichols, Josh Turner, Faith Hill, Rodney Atkins, Joe Diffie, Eddy Arnold, Billy Dean, Little Jimmy Dickens, Deana Carter, the Oak Ridge Boys, Porter Wagoner, Chris Young and many others. Bobby writes on guitar and has been signed to Mike Curb Music for the past 13 years. He is one of the singers on the new CMT series, "The Singing Bee." More at www.myspace.com/bobbytomberlin

CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.

7 pm EMITH plays the Desert Song Productions “FEATURED ARTIST / OPEN MIC” at Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; 661-272-9530; www.butlerscoffee.com/music.html. EMITH, or as they prefer with all lower-case, emith, is singer-songwriter CAROL ANN IVES and veteran guitarist STEVIE GURR (Dr. John, Elvin Bishop, and others). The duo has been heard on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” and earned a “Listener Favorite” with their song, “San Bernardino.” Founded in 2003 “at the crossroads between Los Angeles and the infamous Inland Empire,” emith ("truth and the good life" - pronounced "EH-myth") is a musical creation with elements of the old and new, of humor and sadness, of the pristine and the profane. The band plays both as an acoustic duo featuring songwriter Carol on vocals and guitar and highly respected guitarist Stevie Gurr on guitar, bass and harmonica, and they sometimes assemble a full band supplemented by various local favorites on bass and drums. emith's style of music features melodic, haunting influences from rock, folk, country, blues, and Celtic genres. emith is currently touring in support of their debut, the full-length, well-produced studio release "13 Seasons" (Burnside Distribution, Mar 17, 2009). That CD was a long time in the making, and listeners to radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” will recall the world premieres of the earliest versions of their songs, including “San Bernardino,” which became a TttT “Listener Favorite.” The press has described them as having elements of Fleetwood Mac, Aimie Mann, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Fairport Convention, and Lucinda Williams. Carol is a newcomer but sounds like a veteran, with a gloomy vocal style reminiscent of Aimee Mann. emith features music that is ethereal but rootsy, lyrically compelling, and full of humor, passion and a wry sex appeal. The band brings a modern energy to melodies that sound as if they were written centuries ago. Accessible by both youthful and mature audiences, emith has catchy songs and an in-the-flesh impression that is hard to forget. More at www.emith.com.

+
Greg Poree began his career in Los Angeles in the mid 60's playing and teaching guitar. The 60's were an exciting time for music and Greg was active in the LA music scene while getting his formal training at Cal Arts. His first major break came in early 1969 when he became musical director for Sonny & Cher on the recommendation of the great alto sax player Harold Batiste. During that time Greg was also actively writing with his sister Anita Porée & best friend Jerry Peters for the hit RCA group Friends Of Distinction. In 1970 Greg took an offer from Motown to become musical director for Gladys Knight and the Pips. This began a long association with Motown and over the next few years Greg was musical director and guitarist with such acts as Diana Ross, The Supremes, Thelma Houston, and Syreeta Wright. Greg also played on numerous Motown recording sessions with Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, and The Jackson 5. Other artists Greg traveled with during the 70's included Paul Anka, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin and Isaac Hayes., but with the birth of his sons Emile and Justin, Greg no longer wanted the road life.
+
He channeled his skills into becoming a top LA studio guitarist working with an amazing range of musical talent such as Donald Byrd, Randy Crawford, The 5th Dimension, Benny Golson, Aretha Franklin, Ahmad Jamal, Syl Johnson, James Brown, Al Green, Albert King, Teena Marie, Phoebe Snow, Dusty Springfield, The Originals, Donny Osmond, Edwin Starr, Stanley Turrentine, Lenny Williams and Joan Baez.
+
Greg's activities since the millennium include teaching at the prestigious Henry Mancini Institute, arranging for the National Symphony Orchestra and NAACP Image Awards, and producing the CD's Three AM and Brand New Morning for an amazing new singer/songwriter and Lakeshore recording artist Gretchen Lieberum.
+
The night's music will be all original compositions that are melody and groove driven; the vibe improvisational world jazz. Performing with Greg are Paul Cartwright (violin), Keith Jones (bass) and David Leach (percussion). More at www.myspace.com/gregporee and www.poreemusic.com.

…So many truly fine shows, so few evenings and weekends to see them. With a new spirit of HOPE in America, why not celebrate by going out for a tunefully good time?

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take the dozens of electric Americana shows into account!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
