+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
.
WELCOME!
Without question, the Los Angeles region now has the greatest number of live acoustic performances of anyplace in America, and possibly in the world. Much of it is simply WONDERFUL, including club and coffeehouse gigs, performing arts center and theater concerts, indoor and outdoor shows, and a steady parade of festivals that include a healthy acoustic music presence. In addition, for those planning travel and our readers elsewhere, the Guide always includes a vast variety of acoustic music festivals all over the planet. And unique to the Guide, descriptions are included in our extensive listings, rather than simple calendar listings where you need to recognize a performer’s name to know the genre of acoustic music. (Lots of places tell you who, where, and when. We tell you that, plus the all-important “what.”) Yep, we “Guide” you through the live acoustic music scene.
+
RECURRING EVENTS include residencies, series, showcases, and open mics, and all these are numerous in the Southern California acoustic music universe. We generally add them to the Guide’s calendar one week at a time, as dates approach, because there are so many of them AND because it gives us a chance to learn who is playing.
+
RADIO SHOWS that regularly feature live acoustic performances are included, provided there is a way to hear them in Los Angeles. With precious few exceptions, hearing these in L.A. requires internet listening, and we give you the necessary URLs.
+
GETTING YOUR GIG LISTED: We welcome your feedback, and news of your acoustic Americana and acoustic renaissance music shows (send us gig notices in our format, please; see any listed show for an example) please DON’T expect us to re-type info that you have locked into a jpg – send us plain text, so we can work with it! Your editor wrote in his “Somewhere Out There” column in FolkWorks, in July, about Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women: “…I hadn't seen Dave in awhile. Before the show, he told me, ‘With these women artists, CINDY CASHDOLLAR, LAURIE LEWIS, CHRISTY McWILSON, AMY FARRIS, NINA GERBER, LISA PANKRATZ, all I have to do is show up.’ After the show, I spent a few minutes with two of the Guilty Women who I know. They are all-stars, and the performance was superb. If that show was all I'd seen all month, I'd have had reason to be happy.” (Read the rest of the piece at www.folkworks.org/content/viewcategorycur/89)

8-10 pm MEIKO plus TYRONE WELLS play the “PERSHING SQUARE CONCERT SERIES,” at Pershing Sqaure, 532 S Olive St, downtown L.A. 90013; www.laparks.org. It’s a double-bill night of notable singer-songwriters.
+
MEIKO (pronounced MEE-ko) is an American singer-songwriter, born and raised in Roberta, Georgia and currently residing in L.A. She independently released a self-titled album in Sep, 2007, and without the help of a record label, her album reached #35 on the iTunes “Top 100 Albums” chart, and was iTunes' #1 “Singer-Songwriter Album” for over a month. In less than nine months, over 200,000 of Meiko’s singles had been downloaded from iTunes. Several tracks have been featured in primetime TV shows.
+
Meiko was featured as an "Indie Spotlight" artist in the iTunes Store. In June 2008, Meiko signed a recording deal with MySpace Records / DGC, which released her album in partnership with Lucky Ear Music (Meiko's own indie label). The Lucky Ear / MySpace / DGC release has been remixed, remastered and includes re-recorded versions of fan favorites along with a brand-new track, "Boys With Girlfriends." That digital album re-release was Aug 5, 2008, and reached #14 on the iTunes “Top 100 Albums” chart. Once again, it topped the iTunes “Singer-Songwriter Album” chart, and the additional new song, "Boys With Girlfriends," topped the iTunes “Singer-Songwriter Songs” chart. On Nov 21, 2008, the Meiko LP became the #1 best-selling album on Amazon.com.
+
TYRONE WELLS is a singer-songwriter from Spokane, Washington, though he now resides in San Diego. His songs have been featured in TV shows, including “Rescue Me,” “One Tree Hill,” “North Shore,” “What About Brian,” “Numb3rs,” “The Mountain,” “Windfall,” “Wildfire,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “The Bedford Diaries,” “Three Moons Over Milford,” “Meet the Barkers,” and in the film “Everyone's Hero.”
+
Tyrone set a record in 2006 at the National Association for Campus Activities for most college and university bookings from a single showcase in the history of the Convention. Tyrone has admitted in several interviews that he was not inspired to begin songwriting until his move to the Golden State. While attending Hope International University in Southern California, Tyrone joined the band Skypark. In 2000, he launched his solo career, regularly playing acoustic shows in Orange County, where he and a small movement of folk, pop and urban folk artists including Mike Barnet, Danny Vasquez and Jaycob Van Auken formed a loose coalition called True American Records. Tyrone released his new solo album, “Remain,” on January 27, 2009.

Fri, Aug 7; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm LYLE LOVETT & HIS LARGE BAND plus special guest MADELEINE PEYROUX, at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Ave in Griffith Park, L.A.; Greek Theatre hotline, 323-665-1927; http://greektheatrela.com. No one writes songs like Lyle Lovett. Finely wrought and full of wit, wisdom and Texas-sized storytelling, the veteran singer-songwriter’s catalog is rife with characters and concepts that loom large on the American landscape. Lyle Lovett is a four time Grammy winner and is midway through a remarkable career that includes 13 albums and over four million records sold. His music uniquely intersects an array of genres from country and folk to big band swing and traditional pop, as evidenced by such revered albums as “Lyle Lovett,” “Pontiac,” “Lyle Lovett and His Large Band,” “Joshua Judges Ruth” and “The Road To Ensenada.” And, “It’s Not Big - It’s Large,” Lovett’s latest collection, is one of the most acclaimed efforts of his career. The album contains big, contemporary themes, but it is Lovett’s gift to make the deep thoughts slide down like honey. USA Today heralded his “Texas-sized cowboy jazz,” while the Wall Street Journal declared Lovett has “been widening the reach of country music for over 20 years,” while praising the “dozen new tracks that touch on country and folk as well as blues jazz and gospel.” The memorable songs include “I Will Rise Up / Ain’t No Cane,” the poignant “South Texas Girl,” the infectious, upbeat “Up in Indiana,” and the rueful ballad, “Don’t Cry a Tear.” For the last few years, Lovett, who is able to conjure musical magic in a variety of settings, has been alternating Large Band tours with acoustic trio and quartet shows or teaming with John Hiatt or playing in larger songwriter circles featuring Hiatt and Texas icons Guy Clark and Joe Ely. The promo for this says, “It is certain to be unforgettable show that will resonate with the audience long after the concert is over.” For once, the hyperbole has it right. Tix $70 / $60 / $40.

3-5 pm (Pacific) “A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION” always features live performances and skits and stories with host GARRISON KEILLOR, a regular cast of recording artists, and guests, whether broadcasting from various live venues across America, or from its home base in Minnesota. This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

The Dodos create an energetic sound with guitar and drums, music that complements a summer night outdoors, and in the galleries. 7 pm TERENCE MARTIN from NY and RACHEL SEDACCA from Oxnard (when she's not touring the U.S. in her bus), play a two headliner night at the Duncan House Concert series in Ventura. Reservations get directions, at scottd13@roadrunner.com
+
TERENCE MARTIN (“Most Wanted” at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival) was born in London and raised in Los Angeles. Singer-songwriter-poet Terence Martin moved East in 1997 to become part of the flourishing NY acoustic music scene. His musical background includes performing as a double bassist in the Burbank Symphony and in several touring rock bands. Also a published poet, his poetry is included in the anthology, “Four Valley Poets.” Terence recently released his 5th independent CD, Even Trade, on the Good Dog Music label. The new collection of 12 original songs features the artist’s most personal and ambitious work to date, sophisticated and spiritual in tone, with roots in folk, Americana and pop. Seven of the songs were written with long time collaborator, Gregory Hicks. From themes of freedom vs responsibility and revisiting the past, to loves lost and found, the new release joins a finely crafted body of work, rich with poetic imagery and stellar musicianship. Sing Out magazine says: “If you’re a connoisseur of exceptional songwriters, this CD is essential for your collection.” Terence has shared the stage with an impressive line-up of national acts, including Rosanne Cash, Roger McGuinn, Christine Lavin, Dar Williams, and Richie Havens. He’s performed on the Most Wanted Stage at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, been a New Folk winner at the NJ Folk Festival, a finalist in the 2006 Mountain Stage New Song Contest, received honorable mention in the Mid Atlantic Song Contest for “East of the River” and performed at the 2006 Boston Folk Festival.
+
RACHEL SEDACCA - mix a little country blues with a little roadhouse folk, plus a background of too many years following Bonnie Raitt and the Grateful Dead around, and you’ve got the recipe for Rachel Sedacca, Americana singer-songwriter extraordinaire. She specializes in road songs of travel and the places she’s seen, and why not? She covered 5,600 miles of American roads one spring in her converted 1971 GMC school bus “Patience.” Quoting Rachel from a recent article, here voice is... "Groovy, bluesy folkabilly. I've been told I have a very unique quality to my voice and I have to agree. My influences are Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss, Nancy Wilson and of course Janis (Joplin). But I don't think I necessarily sound like them. I've heard Natalie Merchant." $15.

STEVE FORBERT is an American pop music singer-songwriter best known for his song "Romeo's Tune," which reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Forbert debuted in 1978 with “Alive on Arrival,” which earned critical acclaim for its taut, poetic lyrics. The follow-up, 1979's “Jackrabbit Slim” was his most successful outing. He spent much of the ‘80s in Nashville, where he continued honing his songwriting skills and performed regularly throughout the South. In 1988, he signed to Geffen, where the E Street Band's Garry Talent produced his comeback album, “Streets of This Town.” Forbert moved into independent territory for his next albums including “Any Old Time” (a tribute to country music legend Jimmie Rodgers) in 2002 and “Just Like There's Nothin' to It” (a collection of new songs) in 2004. During this period, Forbert released two compilations of rare and unreleased material, “Young, Guitar Days” and “More Young, Guitar Days,” as well as several live recordings. Steve is currently touring and recording new material.

7 pm LYLE LOVETT & HIS LARGE BAND plus special guest MADELEINE PEYROUX, at the Santa Barbara Bowl, 1122 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara; 805-962-7411; www.sbbowl.com. Tix: Floor Sections T, U, V, $74.50; Preferred J,K,L,M,N,O $74.50; G,H,I : $64.50; D,E,F: $54.50; A,B,C: $44.50.

Yes, it’s true -
There are more ACOUSTIC AMERICANA / ACOUSTIC RENAISSANCE music performances EVERY week in the Los Angeles area than the COMBINED TOTAL of ALL OTHER KINDS OF MUSIC!
+
(And that doesn’t even take into account the dozens of electric Americana shows!)
+
If you have trouble believing that assertion, then print this out and see how many pages you’ll need just for the events for the days covered in this edition!
+
Check it yourself: take any edition of the L.A. Times Calendar Section and any edition of the LA Weekly, count-up all the live music shows (you won’t even need to subtract-out the acoustic shows in those two publications, since they hardly list any, anyway) and add them up. THEN, count the number of live acoustic music performances for the same days in the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We have yet to find a week when the TOTAL of all those other genres of music performances equals the number of live performances of acoustic music in the L.A. area! (Even though you can’t hear the music on the radio here, or read about it in the biggest newspapers, it seems people DO want acoustic music and they will find and support it anyway!
