7:30 pm SHANA MORRISON with members of the JOHN STEWART BAND plays the 705 Club, 705 Pier Av, Hermosa Beach; 310-372-9705. Those JOHN STEWART BAND members joining Shana are JOHN HOKE, BOB HAWKINS, DAVE BATTI, & ANDY HILL.
+
When people learn that singer-songwriter SHANA MORRISON is the daughter of music legend VAN MORRISON, the first thing they want to know is how much she has been influenced by her father. Van Morrison's writing has influenced his daughter's work, but not tremendously. Shana's gritty and bluesy approach to pop/rock and roots rock actually owes a lot more to female singer-songwriters like Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Etheridge. Whatever genre in which she seems to be operating at any given moment, what always remains the same is Shana's wide-ranging voice, which Rolling Stone calls "...a smooth, elastic voice and a style that lands between jazz chanteuse and rock chick..." 8 pm KELLY JOE PHELPS at McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Bl (Pico at 31st), Santa Monica 90405; www.mccabes.com; 310-828-4403; tix, 310-828-4497. He’s just back from the UK & Ireland, touring his new album of 11 instrumentals for solo guitar. Called “Western Bell,” it’s his 8th, and his first all-solo instrumental album including 6 string and 12 string guitars and a return to lap-slide on three tracks.
+
Venue booker Lincoln Myerson says, “KELLY JOE PHELPS makes his annual visit to our intimate stage for one performance. One of our favorites, Phelps returns to McCabe's in support of his forthcoming release Western Bell, an instrumental album that includes a return to his influential slide guitar style, that has drawn raves from critics and peers alike. Bill Frizzell says he ‘Sounds like he's coming from the inside out. The bottom up. He's not just playing 'AT' the music or trying to recreate or imitate something that's happened in the past.’ He seems to have tapped into the artery somehow. There's a lot going on in between and behind the notes. Mystery. He's been an inspiration to me.‘ For the last few years, Phelps has been developing his considerable songwriting talent - with remarkable results - eschewing the slide work that made him famous. Now, it seems that the modern bluesman has come full circle, and tonight you can expect to catch this masterful musician with all of his skills on display.” More at www.kellyjoephelps.com. Tix, $20.

As you may know, we do not usually list radio shows UNLESS they feature live acoustic performances. This show does not. But L.A. remains the least diverse radio market in the US (even though it’s the largest US radio market), so any show that spins folk-Americana CDs in this town is cause for celebration. And, KPFK has vacillated on whether or not Mary Katherine’s show will be aired regularly, or at all. Please take note, and let KPFK hear your preferences.

This initial “live” broadcast tiume each weekend is standard everywhere, though repeat times vary by station. In L.A., the show is broadcast on KPCC 89.3 FM, and repeats Saturday night, 6-8 pm and Sunday Noon-2 pm. But if you’re in L.A., it’s much better to find a web simulcast from somewhere; that’s because KPCC has no other music shows and they do not know how to control the levels for music performances, causing frequent peaking and signal cut-out.

His voice is a constant strong and emotive presence demanding attention to lyrics.
+
John Wort Hannam received two 2007 WCMA nominations. He was named a 2007 New Folk Winner at the Kerrville Texas New Folk Songwriting Competition as part of the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival. 8 pm PETE HUTTLINGER plays Boulevard Music, 4316 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City; 310-398-2583; www.boulevardmusic.com. He’s widely known as one of the most awe-inspiring acoustic guitar players in the world. His unique arrangements and spell-binding musicality and precision have entertained audiences all from Los Angeles to Milan. As a recording artist Huttlinger has released numerous albums and received wide-acceptance ranging from his critically acclaimed “Naked Pop” to his current release “Fingerpicking Wonder – The Music of Stevie Wonder.” Praise from the media has been overwhelmingly positive and Huttlinger continues to expand his musical breadth.
+
In 2007, Huttlinger made his debut at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. He was invited back in 2008 and made his first appearance there as a solo artist demonstrating what audiences around the world know him best for – his fantastic sense of humor and mind-blowing chops all combined to make a full-on, entertaining 90 minutes of laughter and chin-dropping. In 2004 and 2007, he was invited to participate in both Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festivals.
+
Huttlinger also makes appearances as a side-man. Country/pop superstar LeAnn Rimes often requests him for her acoustic performances. Some of the most recent ones include the filming of “Live From Abbey Road” a BBC TV series taped at the famous London studios. It aired in America on BRAVO! Huttlinger also appeared with Rimes on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” and made an acoustic recording with her that was sold as an exclusive download through Kellogg’s. More at www.petehuttlinger.com.

8 pm SHANA MORRISON with members of the JOHN STEWART BAND plays The Fret House, 309 N Citrus Av, Covina; 626-339-7020; www.frethouse.com. Those JOHN STEWART BAND members joining Shana are JOHN HOKE, BOB HAWKINS, DAVE BATTI, & ANDY HILL. Whatever genre in which she seems to be operating at any given moment, what always remains the same is Shana's wide-ranging voice, which Rolling Stone calls "...a smooth, elastic voice and a style that lands between jazz chanteuse and rock chick..." “Universal Health Care” and “A Moratorium on Foreclosures” are today’s central themes, and the two themes of an upcoming march and campaign organized by the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC). A massive march is envisioned, from the Mississippi Delta to Detroit. The “D2D” march will take place from Nov 2009 to Jun 2010. Artists are organizing events not just along the entire route of the march but, in addition, satellite events in cities all across the country, including L.A. PPEHRC is gathering testimony from America’s cultural visionaries about their struggles to survive as people and to thrive as artists. The organization has always been composed of poor people’s organizations, a movement to end poverty led by the poor themselves. But almost all artists are poor, so PPEHRC has just launched an effort to get 10,000 bands / crews / venues / artists to affiliate to their network by next summer. You can attend and find out about all this and more. Presentations at today’s event will be made by:
- Luis Rodriguez, author of “Always Running” and “The Republic of East LA,” on the importance of artists and their visions in creating a new society that cares for all of us;
- Timeka Drew of Natural High on the importance of artist involvement in the struggle against poverty;
- Cheri Honkala, national director of PPEHRC, with a battlefront report on the struggle against foreclosures and the role of artists in it.
- Other participants: Talissa Love; Luis Rodriguez for Tia Chucha’s Café Cultural; Ernie Perez for Rock A Mole Productions; Carvell Holloway for Strokely; Kevin Sandbloom, RazB (formerly of B2K); Lee Ballinger for Rock & Rap Confidential; Lady T for Natural High; Drew Amavisca for Elena Rose Productions.

3:30-5:30 pm DAVE STAMEY and GARY ROBERTSON play a benefit concert for the WESTERN MUSIC ASSOCIATION (WMA) California Chapter, in the Wells Fargo Theater at the Autry National Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way, in Griffith Park, L.A, 90027. Advance tix, 818-365-8709 (daytime only) or e-mail lindaleegreen@earthlink.net. Concert follows the monthly Western Music Jam at the Autry National Center (separate ticket for concert, and no museum admission required).
+
DAVE STAMEY is the 2008 WMA Entertainer of the Year, and a nationally-acclaimed western singer-songwriter. He has performed live on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” He was voted Male Performer of the Year by the Western Music Association, and won the Will Rogers Award for Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Western Artists; he won the Songwriter of the Year after being a five-time nominee for the honor. Quite simply, Dave Stamey is one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. His vast repertoire of classic and truly wonderful original Western folk music represents a link between today's Americana singer-songwriters and the old-time cowboy balladeers. He has delighted audiences in seven states, and has found that tells us he “prefers this type of work to being stomped by angry horses.”
+
GARY ROBERTSON is a well known and acclaimed cowboy poet and humorist. Recordings by both have been featured on the on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.”

Directions to the Autry, to avoid Sunday Zoo traffic: the one main road through Griffith Park changes names every half mile or so, and it’s known as Zoo Dr, Griffith Park Dr, Crystal Springs Dr, and Western Heritage Way. Avoid using the Zoo Dr Exit from I-5, because the traffic backs-up from a stop sign before you reach the Autry. From the South, exit I-5 at Los Feliz Bl, heading west; turn right into Griffith Park on Griffith Park Dr/Crystal Springs Dr; follow Crystal Springs Dr past the merry-go-round and past the golf course. The Autry is on your right. From the North, exit I-5 at Western Av, heading west; turn left at Victory Bl / Riverside Dr; cross the 134 Fwy; turn left at the T intersection onto Zoo Dr; the Autry is on your left. From the 134 /101 Fwy, exit at Forest Lawn, turn left onto Griffith Park Dr / Crystal Springs Dr; turn left and proceed around to the right, passing Travel Town on your right, then past the zoo; after the stop sign, the Autry is on your left. 7:30 pm MONSTERS OF FOLK: JIM JAMES, CONOR OBERST, M. WARD, & MIKE MOGIS at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Ave in Griffith Park, L.A.; Greek Theatre hotline, 323-665-1927; http://greektheatrela.com. Info & tix, www.greektheatrela.com/events/event_details.asp?ID=1677#
Their promo says, “An Evening With Monsters of Folk: Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward and Mike Mogis will be a 2 1/2 hour musical event showcasing brand new songs from the forthcoming album as well as songs fans have come to enjoy from their respective Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket and M. Ward catalogues. MONSTERS OF FOLK began as folklore of sorts, when James, Oberst, Ward and Mogis did their first run of shows together in 2004. Like the musical revue shows that went town to town when rock ‘n’ roll was newly born, the tour was called ‘An Evening With: Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward,’ although amongst friends and crew, it became affectionately known as the ‘Monsters of Folk Tour.’ While entertaining audiences coast to coast with gorgeous acoustic melodies and world-weary tales, the foursome vowed to make their way to a studio at some point after the tour’s completion. Instead, the songsmiths went on to individually release some of rock music’s most exciting and essential albums of the last five years – Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning & Cassadaga; My Morning Jacket’s Z & Evil Urges; M. Ward’s Post War and Hold Time. Never ones to forget their promise, when downtime presented itself, they convened in the studio multiple times over two years, with Mogis at the helm of their first collaborative album due out on September 22nd. Although these critically acclaimed artists have shared the stage before, this album marks their first recorded output as a band. The result is as stunning and storied as you would expect it to be.
+
“All four members play every instrument on the album, supplying everything from drum kills to cascading backing vocals. The songs—some road-worn fables, some intimate and intricate with electronic elements, some woozy and sun-soaked—are everything one expects from these four musical minds collaborating together. The album exudes a warm, organic spaciousness, filled by brilliant choruses, intoxicating harmonies and effortless melodies, as each member brings his own strengths to the table to create one perfect whole.” Tix,: $49.50 / $37.50.

It’s Harding’s first time back at the venue since 2007. Booker Lincoln Myerson says, “Maybe it was the time Bruce Springsteen joined him on stage, or, maybe it was when a certain someone met his future wife at the show. At any rate, it seems that an awful lot of the McCabe's faithful have stories about seeing ‘Wes’ play here. Often compared to Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, and Loudon Wainwright III, Harding combines his very literate songwriting with an irrepressibly irreverent stage persona to make for some unforgettable performances. He's one of our favorites, and we hope you can make it. San Francisco power-pop wunderkind CHRIS VON SNEIDERN kicks off the evening.” Tix, $16.

9-11 pm “HAND IN HAND BENEFIT CONCERT” for victims of Philipine flooding is neither acoustic or Americana, but supports a good cause, with KRIS SEARLE, LOTONIUS EARL, JEZDA, JAEL GADSDEN, DELON,FAWN, ASHA PUTHLI, STUART GUEST, ROB C AND ARNOLD G, with Rana Davis, hostess and emcee, at Rage, 8911 Santa Monica Bl, West Hollywood 90069. It’s a benefit concert for the Philippine Aid Society, a 501c3 non-profit. As their promo observes, “Helping others is the way to do it. On September 26, the Manila metro area was pummeled by typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) which resulted in the worst flooding the Philippines has seen in over 40 years. Some are calling the storm the ‘Katrina of the Philippines.’ Nearly 699 people have lost their lives and countless thousands have lost everything they own. To be sure, millions of Filipinos, living in one of the poorest countries in the world, were deeply affected by this tragedy. A montage video by Brian LeBow [www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvliwFfCig8] shows images of the devastating floods. They need basic items like food, medications, clothing, and clean drinking water. Philippine Aid Society is providing those things. Recording artist Arnold G gathered eight recording artists in Los Angeles to raise funds for the victims of the devastating floods. Donations of clothing and food will be accepted on location, while cash donations are being encouraged and managed directly by Tim Troutman, Executive Director of the Philippine Aid Society. The goal is to raise $100,000 toward restoring family housing and getting medicine, food and clothing to those in dire need in the Philippines. Kris Searle, a transplant from the UK, is a pop artist who sometimes performs his repertoire of acoustic material: He is a 2009 nominee for "AAA Single Of The Year" and "Best International Artist," and winner of "Best International Artist" and "Producer of the Year" honors in the 2008 Los Angeles Music Awards; more at www.krissearle.com

+
Your editor really likes FRANK FAIRFIELD and his engaging, often energetic, interpretations of old-time string music styles. This is a live performance of his new self-titled album, “Frank Fairfield,” out now on Tompkins Square.
+
Greil Marcus calls Fairfield, "A young Californian who sings and plays as someone who's crawled out of the Virginia mountains carrying familiar songs that in his hands sound forgotten: broken lines, a dissonant drone, the fiddle or the banjo all percussion, every rising moment louder than the one before it."
+
California-based fiddle, guitar, and banjo player, and ardent 78 collector Frank Fairfield has made his living as a musician, often found playing on the streets of Los Angeles. Handpicked by Fleet Foxes to open their U.S. tour last year, Frank released a 7" on Tompkins Square and recorded his self-titled debut album. His 7" won over tough critics and purists like Grammy winning producer Chris King (Charley Patton, People Take Warning box set), Phil Alexander (Mojo) and Greil Marcus, among others.
+
From Liner Notes by John Tottenham:
"Few questions can be satisfactorily answered about Frank Fairfield, mostly because he keeps to himself. He seems to be at once very open to share his insights, but yet in no way willing to give away his secrets. He was born in the San Joaquin Valley of California. He speaks of his grandfather leaving Texas to pick crops around the country, a constant traveler, a musician, who eventually "got religion" and settled in Kettleman City, Kings County as a pastor. Dust storms, tumbleweeds, cotton crops. . . this imagery has been richly cultivated in Fairfield's young mind. Somewhere along the road Frank Fairfield finds himself and begins to play his grandfather's old fiddle, picks up the banjo and gitbox, and starts playing the tunes of old with great conviction, learning many songs from the collection of rural gramophone records he has hungrily hunted down." More at www.myspace.com/frankfairfield

She won the 2007 Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest in a field of top contestants from all over the United States. Not long after, at Arizona’s 2007 Sedona Bluegrass Festival, buzz on the street labeled her “the new Alison Krauss.” She and her band were the Grand Prize winners in the 2008 “Southern California Live Acoustic Music Competition”.
+
Stephanie included among her “see Naples and die” parody that Folkworks Magazine had already named her among the “Top Ten / Best of 2008” live acoustic female singer-songwriters. That honor notes, “Stephanie performs from a repertoire that increasingly includes her originals, attracting bluegrass and new folk audiences alike with her fiddle, vocals, and songwriting.”
+
And she celebrates the DJ in New Zealand who made the CD “Album of the Week” there. He wrote, "How can such a classy performer go wrong with quality moments channelling Emmylou? My album of the week ... without question." - Eddie O’Strange, Town & Country, Lower Hutt, New Zealand.
+
Writing in Mondo Cult Magazine, Jesse Lilly calls her, "A fiddle playing charmer with a set of pipes she knows how to use and gift of gab that regularly amuses her audiences."
+
Scott Duncan of Duncan House Concerts writes, “Stephanie's music is new and very catchy; an engaging mixture of bluegrass, folk, roots, and jazz with sophisticated lyrics and killer instrumentation.”
+
Stephanie played her radio debut on Larry Wines’ show, “Tied to the Tracks,” and got world premiere airplay of advance tracks from the album that’s won honors and acclaim.
+
Stephanie’s “boys” include multi-instrumentalist Luke Halpin, late of Border Radio. Luke was pegged early-on as a "musical phenom" by the Southern California music press, and he brings beautiful harmonies and fine pickin' to the duo, performing some of his original songs.
