Yes, that was BOB STANE that you saw on the TV news last night (Nov 4) on Channel 2, and channel 5, and channel 7, and he was featured in a full-page story the same day in the Pasadena Star News newspaper! Bob is the impresario of the Coffee Gallery Backstage (named in FolkWorks as the Best Intimate Acoustic Music Venue in L.A.) and he will receive the “Best of the West Award” this weekend at the Folk Alliance Region West (FAR West) Conference in Irvine.

8 pm IAN ANDERSON “PLAYS THE ACOUSTIC JETHRO TULL” at The Grove of Anaheim, 2200 East Katella Av, Anaheim; 714-712-2700. Ian Anderson, known throughout the world of rock music as the flute and voice behind the legendary Jethro Tull, performs a special solo with three guests. Ian performs songs from the Jethro Tull repertoire and his solo material. Widely recognized as the man who introduced the flute to rock music, he remains “the crowned exponent of flute-playing” in the pop-rock genres of music. In addition to classical flute, he plays ethnic flutes and whistles together with acoustic guitar and the mandolin family of instruments, providing the acoustic textures that are an integral part of most of the Jethro Tull songbook.

When not touring with Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson appears frequently in solo concerts with orchestras and in eclectic acoustic shows. For this 2009 solo tour, Anderson has three scheduled guests (subject to change) including IAN CLARKE, a stalwart of the classical and crossover scene, TEYMOUR HOUSEGO, an Indian bansuri (flute) player, and classical flautist ABIGAIL BURROWS. Each guest plays a solo spot and performs with Anderson.

As a solo artist, Ian Anderson has recorded the diverse solo albums “Walk into Light” (1983), the flute instrumental “Divinities” (1995) that reached Number One on the Billboard Classical chart, and the more recently recorded acoustic collections of songs, “The Secret Language of Birds” (2000), and “Rupi’s Dance” (2003). In 2006, he was awarded a Doctorate in Literature from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, and received the “Ivor Award for International Achievement in Music,” was listed in the “New Years Honours List 2008,” and he received an MBE from his native Britain for services to music. John’s powerful songs of humanity and hope are deeply rooted in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs. He paints vivid, lasting images with words and music, drawn from a palette of awareness, irony, humor, and compassion. Other musicians like and respect this guy. In 2005, Arlo Guthrie invited John along on his post-Katrina “Train to New Orleans” tour. Sonny Ochs makes John a mainstay of her “Phil Ochs Song Nights,” and Kris Kristofferson sang on two of John's CDs and gave him a previously unrecorded song to include on his 2006 album “Two Wolves.”

John walks his talk and is actively involved in prison ministry and with Camp Dreamcatcher, a safe haven for children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. He is a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow, has a Shining Star Award from the Dominicans for artistry and service, and a Notable Recording Award from the American Library Association. Tix, $15.

It’s a new venue, said to be beautiful, serving food, beer & wine, 25 mins E of Pasadena off the 210 Fwy. The venue is part of the newly-renovated Claremont Packing House. Proprietress Nancy Tessier’s father, Refugio "Coco" Lopez, plays alto, and she wanted her club to feature an array of jazz singers. This led to a fortuitous connection with Dale Boatman, founder and president of the California Jazz Arts Society. CalJAS is a powerful force in bringing some of the best jazz artists in Southern California, especially singers, to restaurants, clubs and other performance spaces in eastern Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, an area that previously had relatively few opportunities for jazz musicians to perform.
