2) MUSICIAN / FILMMAKING DUO DEBUTS NEW FILM SATURDAY NIGHT IN L.A.
+
MICHAEL GLOVER & ROBYN ROSENKRANTZ won the prestigious “Mumbai Film Festival” for Best Comedy Feature Film in movie-crazy India a few years ago. The pair’s other, musical, identity is BRIGHT BLUE GORILLA, and under that guise, they’ve released five CDs. We’ve written about them in the Guide when they’re in town to perform, and we covered the premiere of the film that went on to win in Mumbai. They’re not easy to track-down. They now live in Europe.
+
Saturday night, you can share the premiere with them and some of the cast members of their new film, “Lose with English” at the Downtown Independent Theater in L.A. (address below). It’s BBG’s fourth feature film.
+
We haven’t seen a preview or a trailer. But we can tell you that doubly-accomplished musician and actor DAVID ZINK, the only cast member who has acted in all their films, tells us, “This is the funniest work they’ve ever done.”
+
The premise for the main character, named English Jones, is “From top star to has-been, how the mighty fall.” And we know he is being pursued by hit men.
+
International troubadour BRETT PERKINS acts in this one, too. But he’ll miss the premiere, since he’s already in Europe for the tour of the EDITED trio, whose CD just debuted last Sunday at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. (The Guide’s Geo. McCalip will bring a review next week.) It’s a small world, since DAVID ZINK, together with MARK DAVIS, are Brett’s EDITED band mates.
+
Still, we expect a full house of fans of “BBG” and other cast members. You can get advance tix and learn more about the creative talents behind the film, and sample their music, at www.BrightBlueGorilla.com and you can rent the earlier BBG films, including “The Mind of Henry Lime,” winner at Mumbai, at www.realeyz.tv. The premiere, including a pre-screening concert by BBG and BRIAN JOSEPH, has “meet-and-greet” the cast at 7 pm, with the concert and then the screening at 8 pm.
+
It’s all at the Downtown Independent Theater, 251 S Main St, downtown Los Angeles 90012.

3) UBER-TALENTED ANNIE MOSCOW IS SUBJECT OF MAGAZINE FEATURE
+
We’ve all faced challenges as artists. ANNIE MOSCOW’s has been unique. Her husband and music collaborator decided that, inside, he was a woman. After the divorce from STEVE GOLD and his becoming RACHEL GOLD, the professional artistic partnership resumed.
+
Obviously, this is no ordinary story. Annie shared it all with Guide editor Larry Wines a few years ago, as it was happening. We didn’t tell the story then, deciding it was all too raw and too private until Annie and Rachel determined their places in a new reality that she had found Kakaesque when it began. (The Guide has consistently maintained the policy that an artist’s personal life is their own business, unless and until they wish to explore more publicly how it informs their art.)
+
For Annie, there have been considerable artistic achievements. She’s written songs for SARAH VAUGHN, SISTER SLEDGE, and MICKEY MOUSE. In a fine full-color feature in “Arizona Lifestyles” magazine, ANNIE MOSCOW, the classically-trained pianist, “consummate classical musician,” and multi-talented singer-songwriter, reveals the story of her ongoing journey, personally and professionally. One quote from the story: “She says her songs are genre-less, which is true, though it’s also true they at various times fit multiple genres including pop, rock, folk, jazz and even art song.” On top of that, she and Steve Gold enjoyed a period of success as children’s musicians both as recording artists with numerous song placements and as performers.
+
Those familiar with Annie’s music know some of that. But there is so much more. The new feature on Annie by KEVIN LaFAVE, appropriately titled “Annie Moscow, Heart & Soul,” appears as the magazine’s “Applause” feature this month. Read it, and you’ll applaud her creativity, her personal struggles with, and acceptance of, Steve as he became Rachel, and more. It chronicles her musical journey through 2007’s “Visible” – a critically-acclaimed but rather dark album whose themes are now easy to understand – to the light and open wings of her more recent work. It’s brilliantly expressed in the magazine’s alluring portrait of her downcast-eyed smile, one of several fine color photos in the article, and the release this month of her brand new CD, “Phoenix.”
+
Yes, the new album’s title is representative of much more than the Arizona city where she lives. It intentionally evokes the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes to a new life.
+
La Fave remarks, “Whatever else she is, Annie Moscow may be the most important Arizona musician you’ve never heard of.” He continues that he “is lucky to be able to change that [for the magazine’s readers],” in time for an important concert that Annie plays in a major Phoenix venue on February 5. You can learn more about Annie and her music at www.anniemoscow.com and you can find the Arizona Lifestyles feature on Annie at http://digital.turn-page.com/issue/24225/76

4) SARAH LEE GUTHRIE & JOHNNY IRION PLAYING L.A. & “LAST CALL WITH CARSON DALY”
+
Touring their new album, "Bright Examples," the Guthrie family’s young generation has spring tour dates with VETIVER and MARTIN SEXTON, SXSW Showcases in Austin, and some California shows while they’re on the left coast for their appearance on late night TV’s “Last Call w/ Carson Daly.”
+
The TV gig is NOT the usual moment of quick introduction from the host at his desk, simply to facilitate three minutes (or less) of music, at the end of the show. Instead, on Tuesday, February 22, Sarah Lee & Johnny will release “Bright Examples,” their second full-length studio album, on Ninth Street Opus , and Carson Daly’s show will record the duo’s CD release performance that night at Hotel Café in Hollywood. The segment will air sometime in March.
+
The album is already collecting critical acclaim:
+
Glide Magazine says, "A laid back precision may be Bright Examples hallmark. That place where music surges gracefully like a passing river in a crystal moonlit night. This music is simultaneously hushed and vibrant, pulsing and meticulous, lucid and a little scruffy."
+
Vintage Guitar Magazine writes, "The duo's talent is obvious from the opening cut [of ‘Bright Examples’]. The guitar changes are stunning, the vocals magnificent... Here's hoping we don't have to wait five years for the next record from this fine duo."
+
Relix Magazine says, "Right from the first chords of 'Ahead of Myself,' it's clear that the duo has found the sweet spot for their music. As always, the voices weave a fine tapestry, but the more contemporary alt-country style moves them into another musical category. This folk royalty has truly carved its own equally charming path."
+
Produced by VETIVER's ANDY CABIC and THOM MONAHAN (Vetiver, Devendra Banhart) and recorded at Dreamland Studios in Woodstock, NY, Bright Examples includes 12 original songs showcasing an entirely new electric sound for Sarah Lee and Johnny. Special guests on “Bright Examples” includes a reunion of original JAYHAWKS band mates GARY LOURIS and MARK OLSON on backing vocals, Vetiver's drummer OTTO HOUSER, is on board, and singer-songwriter-guitarist NEAL CASAL contributes guitar . Casal did the album photography, too, and that’s notable: he is the photographer featured in the book “Ryan Adams: A View of Other Windows,” KEVIN BARKER and CHARLIE ROSE played pedal steel and flat picked guitars, and everybody’s favorite, RADISLAV LORKOVIC, did the piano tracks..
+
The album’s production, says Jesse Cutler of San Francisco-based JP Cutler Media, “is crisp, consistently imaginative and captures the spontaneity of the tracks being recorded live with a full ensemble. Sarah Lee & Johnny's patented country-rock songwriting and rich vocal harmonies beautifully intertwine with Vetiver's West Coast pastoral psych-rock aesthetic. Vibrant instrumental accents arrive via pedal steel guitar, accordion, piano, Hammond organ, and a wall of guitars.”
+
Are we bummed because the new project is electric, and not acoustic? Nah. We know ’em and we’ve followed their music. This’ll be good, live and on the new CD’s tracks.
+
In 2005, Sarah Lee & Johnny released their first full-length studio album, “Exploration.” Over the course of the last five years, they have consistently toured that album as a duo, and they were featured members of the "Guthrie Family Rides Again" tour in 2009 & 2010. In October, 2009, Sarah Lee released her debut family album, “Go Waggaloo” on Smithsonian Folkways. It received much critical praise. The duo released a live HD DVD, “Folksong” in 2009,, preceded by Irion’s second solo album, “Ex Tempore,” in 2007,
+
As Jesse Cutler observes, “It has been one nonstop whirlwind of activity for the husband and wife duo.”
+
Sarah Lee & Johnny's focus in 2011 is squarely on “Bright Examples” and beyond. "We're not going to wait another five years for the next record," says Guthrie. "We're on a roll now. ‘Bright Examples’ only includes a dozen songs out of the 50 tunes we've written over the past five years. We can't wait to get back in the studio!"
+
Their California dates, amidst a bunch on the East Coast, are:
Wed, Feb 16 – AMSD Concerts - San Diego - with BLAME SALLY
Thu, Feb 17 - Sunset Sessions - San Diego
Fri, Feb 18 - Oasis House Concert - San Diego
Sat, Feb 19 - Steynberg Gallery - San Luis Obispo
Tue, Feb 22 - Hotel Café – Hollywood, for “Last Call with Carson Daly” taping at venue
Thu, Feb 24 - SOHO - Santa Barbara - with THE FAMILY TREES
Fri, Feb 25 - Swedish American Hall - San Francisco – “Noise Pop” with ALEXI MURDOCH, BART DAVENPORT, SILJE NES
+
Plus, catch them on the radio (or in L.A., on a web simulcast) on Sun, Feb 27, when they perform on “Mountain Stage” from Charleston, WV, with LUCINDA WILLIAMS, RED HORSE (JOHN GORKA, LUCY KAPLANSKY, ELIZA GILKYSON), THE LOW ANTHEM, and IVAN & ALYOSHA,

8) JUST GIVE ME THAT LONE STAR BEER, AND BOB WILLS MUSIC…
+
So, went the lyrics of a fun honky-tonk song a few years back, by a songwriter and band we can no longer identify. But no question that the late BOB WILLS is an immortal. And we’ve got fresh news from the web site that keeps his classics in the minds of newer generations than those who got to see him perform.
+
Proclaiming, “Bob Wills is Still the King,” Dwight Adair, owner of www.bobwills.com, is always letting us know about new treasures he unearths and adds to the site. This time around, he says, “On the ‘Audio/Video’ page of our website, there has been an important improvement to the video interviews offered there. When you go to that page, as usual, one of five videos will be presented, selected randomly...BUT NOW you are able to click on any one of the ‘thumbnail’ stills of the other videos and be able to go directly to any other interview you choose, automatically. These thumbnails are directly below the playing video...so just make your desired selection and your chosen video interview of a former Texas Playboy will be streamed to you right away!”
+
That’s a real good thing, pard. It seems that so very many of today’s musicians continue to emulate and pay homage to BOB WILLS & THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS, from Austin’s wonderful HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN to L.A.’s COW BOP and the Bay Area’s SADDLE CATS, and that hardly scratches the surface (but it does name some of the best).
+
Y’know, we reckon a body ort ter be getting’ ready for another feature on the web site – that bein’, “Bob Wills Radio.” The next edition features WILL TAYLOR.

9) MARINA V TO PERFORM IN LONDON FOR SIR BOB GELDOF
+
She’s the classically-trained pianist, composer and songwriter from Moscow who is now an American citizen and who has added acoustic guitar to her repertoire. Her originals have appeared in television and movies. She seems to make news with her latest success on a regular basis, and since we’ve been happily familiar with Marina and her music for a long time, we’re always impressed but never surprised. The only surprise is that a major label still hasn’t signed her.
+
Marina wrote us from the road – she was in Austin – telling us, “I thought I'd share my big news with you guys! [I] have been announced as one of the finalists in the ‘YouBloom International Song Contest.’ Over 1,200 songs were entered and judged by a distinguished panel headed by the legendary and well respected industry veteran, Sir Bob Geldof. Mr. Geldof himself will be presenting [me] with [an] award.”
+
As a Top 4 finalist, YouBloom is flying Marina to London where she will perform at The Cobden Club. As a finalist Marina V has already has received much attention along with prize money of
2,000 euros.
+
Back home in L.A., Marina said, “I am extremely excited about coming to London to perform and very grateful to everyone at YouBloom for the opportunity that they have given me. I would also like to thank every one of my fans who took the time to vote online for the song ‘You Make Me Beautiful.’ My fans deserve much of the credit for without their love, support, and efforts my song may have never gotten in front of the panel of celebrity judges.”
+
Marina V has “a hauntingly beautiful voice” – L.A. Times
“Melodic and passionate music” – The Washington Post
“Angelic Voice” – Entertainment Today
And she is “An emerging musician you should know about” – The Huffington Post
+
Marina V’s latest CD, “My Star,” became available January 18, 2011, worldwide. There’s lots more on Marina V at www.marinav.com

10) WILL WE HEAR THE TOP 40 – FROM ANOTHER PLANET?
+
No, we haven’t drunk Glenn Beck’s Koolaid, or watched too many History Channel fantasies about ancient aliens (who did not, by the way, build the pyramids).
+
The source for this one is none other than NASA.
+
In a recent presentation on a new array of radio telescopes, spokesperson Priscilla Vega of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena said the new system, “could reveal radio waves coming from planets outside our solar system.”
+
But, won’t those radio waves – if we can find them – have some kind of, ahh, content?
+
For years, since the two Voyager spacecrafts were sent out of the solar system with those gold records of “The Sounds of Earth,” people have joked that the first message we receive from an alien civilization might be, “Send more Chuck Berry.”
+
Of course, Ms. Vega is focused on detecting planets by listening to radio signals at the wavelengths that the new array will detect. We can’t help but wonder what would be generating those signals.
+
Most likely, they’ll come from gas giants like Jupiter, which makes so much noise that you can hear the racket from the big planet as some of the static your radio picks up. But that doesn’t mean there are no signals from a Klingon version of I Love Lucy.
+
Back to the science. The project is quite impressive and, in terms of scale and sensitivity, wholly unprecedented. The first station in the new “Long Wavelength Array,” with 256 antennas, is scheduled to start surveying the sky by this summer. When complete, the full Array will consist of 53 stations, with a total of 13,000 antennas strategically placed in the wide open spaces of New Mexico, across an area nearly 400 kilometers (248 miles) in diameter.
+
Scientists do have a sense of humor. You can catch ’em cracking-up each other with wild speculations that they don’t want getting out, because of the ’spalin’ factor if they did. The nature of science is to verify and peer-review everything before telling the rest of us about it. The late Carl Sagan used to say, “The only cardinal truth of science is that there are no cardinal truths.” So, we have risked embarrassing Ms. Vega by engaging in this flight of fancy. Or maybe not. Her announcement, describing the new radio telescope array, was titled, “An Astronomer’s Field of Dreams.” Those last three words, of course, invoke the line from the movie with that name: “If you build it, they will come.”
+
Maybe their radio signals will, anyway. We can’t wait to see if they have banjo and accordion, or if they’re too civilized.
+
You can read the complete NASA / JPL document at www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-027&cid=release_2011-027

11) LOCAL INDIE SONGWRITER HAS ORIGINAL IN HALLMARK CHANNEL MOVIE ON SATURDAY
+
“SMOOCH,” airing Saturday, February 5 at 9 pm, on cable TV, has a song by L.A. indie songwriter JANIS VAILE that she wrote and performed. It airs on the Hallmark Channel. The song is "Icicles." Janis tells us, “You will be able to hear ‘Icicles’ toward the end of the movie. I hope you will watch and enjoy.” And you can buy a download of Janis Vaile’s “Icicles” on iTunes.

They won the prestigious “Mumbai Film Festival” for Best Comedy Feature Film in movie-crazy India a few years ago.
+
Tonight, you can share the premiere with them and some of the cast members of their new film, “Lose with English.” It’s BBG’s fourth feature film.
+
Expect a sold-out house of fans of “BBG” and other cast members.

Bob Stane says, “What a concept! Read the copy, you will like it.” WENDY WALDMAN has enjoyed a distinguished career as an artist (solo on major labels and cult fave Bryndle), one of the first woman record producers to have a major impact, and songwriter of multi-platinum songs in genres from country to pop, film, jazz, children's music and R&B. Her list of songwriting and producing credits is extensive and impressive, and includes the Grammy-winning "Save the Best for Last," (recorded by Vanessa Williams). Her first album, Love Has Got Me, on Warner Bros. Records, was proclaimed by Rolling Stone Magazine to be the "singer-songwriter debut of the year." She has made eight critically acclaimed solo albums and toured extensively as well. In 1996, a "best of" collection was released on Warner Brothers, followed by the reissue of all of the Warner albums in 2005. Her newest CD, My Time in the Desert, was a 2007 release. Tix, $ 15

Sun, Feb 6:
8 pm CAT POWER at The Music Box, 6126 Hollywood Bl; Hollywood. John Payne writes in the L.A. Weekly, “The charismatic enigma wrapped in a spacey riddle known as Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power, has finally emerged as a confident, relaxed performer fully in command of her considerable musical chops. Recent appearances have revealed a new Cat Power on a fascinating ride deep into the art of pure vocal technique, with that distinctively breathy instrument on a complexly soulful slo-burn through her favored rock/gospel/blues/R&B amalgam. Tonight, backed by her explosive quartet comprising the Blues Explosion's Judah Bauer on guitar, the Dirty Three's Jim White on drums, Gregg Foreman on organ and guitar and Erik Paparazzi on bass, Marshall will span a range of choice items from her catalogue, most likely including jewels from her last and finest ‘The Greatest,’ plus several intriguing covers (Eartha Kitt en español, Nico, Rolling Stones). But the emphasis will be on the first new material she's come up with since 2006, and it is, you'll be glad to hear, ever haunting, both direct and nebulous, head-turningly subtle and, when the impulse hits, very, very noisy. Full of surprises, this Cat Power, and that's the greatest thing of all.” Tix, $35.

+
Deadpan satire and journalistic skill collide in the phenomenon that is “The Onion.” Founded in 1988 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the “fake news” newspaper is the notable precursor to such biting, faux-news programs as "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report." Last year, “The Onion News Network,” an online send-up of 24-hour cable TV news, was named a Peabody Award winner and praised as “hilarious, trenchant and not infrequently hard to distinguish from the real thing.” In their UCLA Live debut, current Onion editor JOE RANDAZZO and fellow staffers present a multimedia discussion on the state of media, politics and pop culture, as they offer insight into how the paper’s culture-skewering stories and hilarious headlines are created. Tix, $28-48 ($15 for UCLA students).

Sat, Feb 12; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm RICK SHEA with RITA HOSKING at the Fret House, 309 N Citrus, Covina; 626-339-7020,
+
RITA HOSKING's songs have been praised for their sense of story and place, and her performances for capturing the audience. Honors include "Best Country Album" nomination by the 2010 Independent Music Awards, winner of the '08 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival, finalist in the '09 Telluride Troubadour Contest, and others as well. She has played her songs for appreciative listeners at the Strawberry Music Festival, Kate Wolf Music Festival, and many more. "There’s a grit to her songs and sinewy toughness to her voice that weave their own spell," (Q Magazine.)
+
RICK SHEA is a longtime roots-Americana Southern Cal favorite, a top-notch musician who has co-produced with DAVE ALVIN. Hi's songs embrace everything from norteño and border rock to traditional folk and country music, his voice is smooth and bittersweet and his guitar playing goes from subtle on the ballads to blazing through the rockers. His 5 critically acclaimed albums have been called “ marvelous…4 stars... LA Daily News, (“Sawbones”) to “stunningly good”... Dirty Linen (“Trouble and Me”) and he's worked with everyone from roots rock kingpin Dave Alvin to folk chanteuse Katy Moffatt to indie rock legends R.E.M.“Staunchly independent...represents the best of California music.” - LA Weekly.
+
Rick’s latest CD, “Shelter Valley Blues,” made #2 on the FAR Chart, #3 on the EuroAmericana Chart, the “Top Ten of 2009” in FolkWorks, and earned a blurb in USA Today.
+
FolkWorks Joel Okida, in naming “Shelter Valley Blues” to the Top Ten, says, “Long time Southern California singer-songwriter-musician who has a resume of arresting songs and a habit of abetting almost every other singer or band of country or honky-tonk notoriety that rolls into town. This is a captivating piece of work and fits in nicely with the excellent recordings that he has generated over the years. Don't know if he is underrated or overlooked, but if he is, it's your fault, not his.”
+
Blll Lavery of Village Records wrote of “Shelter Valley Blues,” “Years from now writers will refer to this as “his career album.” In case I'm not around to do it, I'll just do it here. He's had a long and storied career and worked with music royalty in several genres. As is the case with in demand players they often don't get the proper respect for their own recordings. This one will change all of that for Shea. This self produced and recorded album feels like something The Band would have done early in their career.”

Sun, Feb 13; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
3 pm KEN O’MALLEY presents a special show, focused on “THE WOMEN OF IRELAND,” at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-794-2424; venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named in FolkWorks as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
From the quiet strength of his mother, who raised seven children and organized a household of nine members, to famous and infamous Irish women who left their mark on history, this show pays tribute to many of these women through Ken’s engaging stories and songs. It’s a true testament to the women of Ireland, steering paths through a male dominated society with their loyalty to family and their connection with the land, many, such as Grace O’Malley, becoming bold leaders of men. (Please note date change from previous announcement).
+
The Coffee Gallery Backstage, as Ken says, “is a delightful and unique performance space that has been named by Folkworks magazine as the #1 venue for acoustic music in Southern California. Call their NEW reservation hotline 626-794-2424 (after 10 am).” Indeed, Ken's shows at this venue have sold out in the past, but, as venue impresario Bob Stane adds, “We have always been able to accommodate the waiting list.”
+
Ken, who brings his marvelous baritone, fine guitar, and authentic and original Irish songs, concludes, “If you have never been to this beautiful all-ages ‘listening venue,’ you have missed something special!”

Mon-Wed, Feb 14-16; an “EVENT-OF-THE-WEEK” FOR ARTISTS:
“NEW MUSIC SEMINAR” at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, Universal City, with nightly performances at The Music Box / Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood and the Roxy in West Hollywood.
+
The New Music Seminar (NMS) is billed as “the innovative future of music conference,” and organizers have announced the final schedule and speaker lineup for the Los Angeles conference.
+
Gilli Moon, president of the global Songsalive! organization and one of the mentors at a 5 pm session at the Seminar on Wed, Feb 16, says, "The New Music Seminar is not your normal run in the mill music conference that ties to spoon feed artists on how to ‘make it’ with music industry guests that sit up on panels like popcorn with no desire to interact. This is a real conference with real learning, and using step by step approaches on how to really succeed in THIS real climate of the music business. Of what I've learned from Dave Lory's approach (New Music Seminar's producer), he brings panelists on board who know how to educate and are willing to engage with the musicians and artists. It's intimate, exclusive and real."
+
Event includes a Monday night, Feb 14, Opening Night Party, a red carpet event at The Music Box, Hollywood.
+
The two-day, three-night conference includes a symphony of five "movements" (focused discussions), eighteen 18-minute Intensives (presentations) from key industry leaders, 25 mentoring sessions, nightly music showcases, High-Level Industry Summit Meetings. NMS creative workshops focus on Live Performances, Singer/Rappers Vocal Performances, Producing and Songwriting, with ongoing networking opportunities throughout.
+
Gilli Moon adds, “New Music Seminar is the must-attend conference for the emerging new music industry. The Seminar will address both the artists' dilemma of breaking out from the ever-growing glut of music releases and the development of a new business model for a sustainable music business.”

Tue, Feb 15; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm “SUSAN JAMES CD RELEASE PARTY” really IS a concert party, with a huge lineup and “a rolling review” with performances by SUSAN JAMES, OLD CALIFORNIO, TONY GILKYSON & KIP BOARDMAN, DOUBLE NAUGHT SPY CAR, I SEE HAWKS IN L.A., DJ BONEBRAKE, THE QUARTER AFTER, EVIE SANDS, ANNY CELSI & NELSON BRAGG, and others, at the Echo, 1822 Sunset Bl, Echo Park; 213-413-8200. www.attheecho.com.

Susan James new CD is “Highways Ghosts, Hearts and Home,” featuring 11 original songs by James. It’s the fourth full-length release from the Los Angeles based singer-songwriter.
+
"Hey, well your set was so fantastic. And what a band. Guitar wizard, bass magician, Bonebrake drums… And your great songs." — Twitter tweet Susan James received from well-known Americana and rock artist RYAN ADAMS.
+
A celebrated singer and accomplished guitarist, James was hand-selected for tours with BOB WEIR’S RATDOG and LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM and many others. James previously made a splash with her three acclaimed releases “Life Between Two Worlds,” “Shocking Pink Banana Seat” and the double-LP “Fantastic Voyage,” wherein she was backed by an eclectic group of guests, including ex-REPLACEMENTS bassist TOMMY STINSON and THE WONDERMINTS.
+
“Highways, Ghosts, Hearts and Home” is self-produced, and James has once again surrounded herself with stellar musicians, including PAUL LACQUES, PAUL MARSHALL & SHAWN NOURSE (2/3 of the band, I SEE HAWKS IN L.A.) – the guys perform respectively, guitar, bass and drums on all tracks; GABE WITCHER (PUNCH BROTHERS) on fiddle; DANNY MCGOUGH (SHIVAREE, SOCIAL DISTORTION) on the Hammond B3; and more. It was recorded at Nourse by Northwest Studios in L.A. by Shawn Nourse (Dwight Yoakam, Rosie Flores) with additional recording at Fully’s Studio in Topanga by Fulton Dingley (Stereolab, Robert Wyatt, Kulah Shaker). Dingley mixed the CD, with additional mixing by Ryan Ulyate (Tom Petty). It was mastered by Joe Gastwirt Mastering (Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Crosby, Stills and Nash). After tonight’s release, US & European tour dates are planned for spring, 2011. More at www.susanjamesmusic.com
+
We’ve seen promo that reads, “James has expanded her lyrical and musical reach through a psychedelic, country-folk lens, with her songs addressing life, love, hope, apparitions and eccentricities. The songs were written, sequenced and produced by her as more of a "concept" than just the sum of all parts. James’ ghostly voice, grasp of lyrics and complex arrangements blend flawlessly to take you on a kaleidoscopic journey throughout the record, and securing her a spot in the Americana spotlight.”
+
There’s a great article on a band doing the project “DIY” (do-it-yourself, with a major record label) at www.dailykos.com/story/2011/1/6/125642/2671
+
Show is presented by “The Grand Ole Echo” productions. Doors at 7 pm, and it’s a good idea to be early. $10 gets you in, AND a copy of the new CD; $5 admission without CD. Show is 18+,

Inspiring poet, feminist, author, actress, director and activist Maya Angelou is one of the most recognizable and beloved names in contemporary American literature and one of the most powerful voices in American culture. Her work is vigorous, elegant and wields the power to blur racial and socioeconomic lines. Angelou’s influential “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” is a classic that transcends generations. Her prolific career includes a litany of best-selling works of poetry and prose, and this appearance is a rare chance to celebrate this extraordinary woman in her own notable presence.
+
Angelou recited her original poetry at President Bill Clinton’s Inauguration in 1993. Not since John F. Kennedy took office in 1961 was a poet invited to take part. (Kennedy chose Carl Sandberg.) President Barack Obama revived the tradition again at his Inauguration in 2009 (the poet was Elizabeth Alexander, though most people remember that ARETHA FRANKLIN sang, and JOHN WILLIAMS conducted ITZHAK PERLMAN, YO-YO MA, GABRIELA MONTERO, & ANTHONY McGILL). Sat, Feb 26; a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick:
8 pm “WOODY GUTHRIE TRIBUTE,” the new show by COUNTRY JOE McDONALD (Country Joe & the Fish) at the CALTECH FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY series in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) on the campus, 322 S Michigan Av, Pasadena; 626-395-4652, or toll-free 888-2CALTECH (1-888-222-5832). More on the Caltech Folk Music Series at www.folkmusic.caltech.edu - and check-out other music on campus at Caltech Presents / Caltech Public Events series at www.events.caltech.edu.
+
COUNTRY JOE McDONALD has been touring his “TRIBUTE TO WOODY GUTHRIE” for the past few years to strong audience acclaim. In his highly-entertaining tribute, Country Joe deftly conveys the charm, talent, and social and political consciousness of the legendary folksinger from Oklahoma. It helps to know that McDonald’s father, Worden, shared Oklahoma’s Dust Bowl roots with Guthrie in the ‘20s & ‘30s. Country Joe opens the tribute with a moving performance of Woody’s best-known tune, “This Land is Your Land,” and takes the audience through a journey of 13 Woody Guthrie songs, all in a strong clear voice that doesn’t mimic Guthrie’s style, but conveys the emotion and energy that defines Guthrie. More at www.countryjoe.com.
+
The campus ticket office handles the Folk Music Society’s advance tickets, takes credit cards, and is open Noon-5 pm, Mon-Fri; their number is 626-395-4652. As the date gets close, this will likely sell-out. Tickets are $20, $5 for children and Caltech students.

We do all we can to bring you news and notices of all the many, many, acoustic music events in and around Los Angeles.

Plus, we tell you about RADIO SHOWS with acoustic music, focusing on those with live acoustic performances. (They’re available mostly on the web, of course, since we are in acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.)
+
And, we bring news and reviews of the many acoustic music FESTIVALS near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere! With you help, we’ll keep doing it!

PLEASE HELP!
Submit your gigs in our format! Otherwise, it takes many, many, MANY hours just to convert what you send into listings we can use, and we may not be able to unscrew the inscrutable in time to include your gig. Look at ANY write-up in the Guide, and follow the format you see there!
