Our # 1 Story
“ROOTS ROADHOUSE 2,” THIS SUNDAY, IS L.A.'s 2011 AMERICANA MUSIC EVENT
The second annual “ROOTS ROADHOUSE” this Sunday, August 14, is a major SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK pick for the Guide. If you attended last year's inaugural event, you're surely saying, “of course it is!” Or if you've made it to any of the weekly “GRAND OLE ECHO” roots-Americana shows, you have enough experience to figure it out. This is L.A.'s Americana Music Event of the summer, and well, hell yeah, the year. It brings a formidable multi-stage lineup that spans the genres of Americana music.
“ROOTS ROADHOUSE 2” is an all day-into-the-night festival celebrating country, Americana, bluegrass, blues and old-time music, with headliners EILEN JEWELL, THE SADIES, JESSIE SYKES, MIKE STINSON, BIG SANDY & HIS FLY RITE BOYS, WHITEY MORGAN, country-rockers JACKSH*T (the McCabe's favorite group, staffed by musicians VAL McCALLUM, DAVEY FARRAGHER & PETE THOMAS); the punk bluegrass sound of OLD MAN MARKLEY; the lo-fi crazy stompin’ blues of RESTAVRANT; and former cowpunker (X band) turned guitar-hero TONY GILKYSON. And there's GWENDOLYN, the EAGLE ROCK GOSPEL SINGERS, and more.
Rounding-out the folk side of country are THE BROKEN NUMBERS BAND, OLENTANGY JOHN, EASTSIDE HAYRIDE, THE DRIFTWOOD SINGERS, and there's folk music rooted in tradition from DAVID SERBY & THE DIRT POOR FOLKLORE.
Last year's event was umm-doggies first rate, erupting into an afternoon of foot-stomping, hand-clapping, impromptu square dancing, and plenty of joyous but not obnoxious hootin' and hollerin'. As noted by the writer of the L.A. Observer’s “Chicken Corner” column, “I took (my daughter) to an all-ages, country rock, urban-country-rockabilly-cowpunk extravaganza called Roots Roadhouse…what a treat that was! Not to mention the graceful confectionery fusion of cultural… stuff, both intentional and not.”
A fleet of first-rate food trucks will be back to supply your culinary needs. The quality was verified by the length of the lines.
The complete schedule is in the Guide's Spotlight Events section.

Our # 3 Story
BANJOS? IN ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE?
The feature story is called, “God, Beer and Banjos – Mumford & Sons Take America.” Of course, the folks at Deering Banjo are downright giddy about it. We'll encourage you go read it at their link, http://www.deeringbanjos.com/email-articles/banjos-in-rolling-stone.
What's Rolling Stone coming to? Next thing ya know, they'll do a feature on the accordion, or the harmonium, or (gasp) the ukulele! Feel free to share your thoughts with us.

Our # 4 Story
LOAFER'S GLORY, A CALIFORNIA ALL-STAR BLUEGRASS BAND, PLAYS SATURDAY
LOAFER'S GLORY, certainly one of California's finest bluegrass bands, is HERB PEDERSEN, guitar, BILL BRYSON, bass, TOM SAUBER, fiddle, and PATRICK SAUBER, banjo & mandolin. They perform Saturday, August 13, at 8 pm in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman) on the Caltech Campus in Pasadena.
Series producers Rex Meyreis and Nick Smith say, “You really owe it to yourself to hear the harmony singing of this quartet. You'll find that you certainly don't have to be from Kentucky or Tennessee to capture the soul of bluegrass.”
The Pasadena Star news ran a fine story at www.pasadenastarnews.com/ci_18619005.
Rex and Nick continue, “Their music is fun, and yet very substantial, as you take in their superb musicianship and singing. They make it look easy and flowing, but in a live situation, you can see the nuances of the occasional nod of the head or the quick acknowledging look at a bandmate's eyes. But most of it is done with the ears, and these guys have shown a long love and dedication to this music. They write a few of their own songs, they do some traditional songs, and plenty of songs by people like the Stanley Brothers, the Osborne Brothers, even the Everly Brothers. Anyplace they can find opportunities for those full, rich harmonies!”
Our Americana readers will especially appreciate one aspect of the Star News article. Band member BILL BRYSON points out that there is little in common between bluegrass and modern day country music.
Catch one of their gospel numbers, “If I Be Lifted Up” on Youtube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9CAntPq9fg. For another take, try “Lazy John” at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rrwv8nkkSN4.
Their web site is part of one of their illustrious band member's sites, at www.herbpedersen.com/loafersglory. More at www.folkmusic.caltech.edu.
Tix, $15 adults, $5 for Caltech students and children. Order by phone at 626-395-4652 or by visiting the Caltech ticket office, or purchase for cash at the door. Enter the campus on Michigan Ave, south off Del Mar, and park free in either of the lots. Follow the signs to the concert.

Our # 5 Story
GREAT OPPORTUNITIES TO ENJOY WOMEN MUSICIANS, BUT TOUGH CHOICES
It's complicated. Plenty of shows with top women musicians happen at the same time during the next few days. On Saturday evening alone, LUCINDA WILLIAMS, MICHELLE SHOCKED (performing with STAN RIDGWAY), Grammy nominee LISA HALEY & THE ZYDECATS, the Grammy-winning MARIACHI DIVAS, and female-fronted western bebop band COW BOP all play opposite one another.
On Sunday, “ROOTS ROADHOUSE 2” brings headliners EILEN JEWELL and THE SADIES, and that one-day festival is opposite a “Free Summer Concert at the Peter Strauss Ranch” with SABRINA & CRAIG and TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS.
Monday, you can catch ANITA & THE YANKS, if you can get to Torrance for a 5 pm show.
Tuesday, accordion chanteuse JESSICA FICHOT plays an early (6:30 pm) free show at the beach, while female-fronted prairiegrassers BORDER RADIO play the monthly “BASC (Bluegrass Association of Southern California) BLUEGRASS NIGHT” in Burbank.
Wednesday, catch the splendid ANNY CELSI with a fine band in West Hollywood.
Thursday, DAVE ALVIN & THE GUILTY ONES will feature some of the members of Dave's GUILTY WOMEN tours, while the SECRET SISTERS play the Levitt Pavilion Pasadena.
Next Friday, THE WATKINS FAMILY HOUR plays West Hollywood, while THE IVY LEAF (and JOEY ABARTA) play in Altadena.
Next Saturday, the annual “SUMMERGRASS” bluegrass festival brings headliner SARA PETITE to the stage, and the film, “JOAN BAEZ: HOW SWEET THE SOUND” screens at the Skirball. Saturday and Sunday, the inaugural “VENTURA FOLK FESTIVAL” includes JUSTINE BENNETT and THE KINFOLK. And we probably missed some (maybe many).
And a look ahead: VICKI GENFAN plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, August 26.
Point is, you can see it as a complicated set of choices, or you can celebrate that so many excellent women musicians are out there on the circuit, enabling so many rich choices!

Our # 6 Story
RODNEY DILLARD, ALREADY AN IBMA INDUCTEE, TO JOIN NEW MISSOURI MUSIC HALL OF FAME
THE DILLARDS were once among the most elite of folk-Americana royalty. Guitarist RODNEY DILLARD and banjo player DOUGLAS DILLARD grew up in Missouri playing music with their family and friends, including a teenaged JOHN HARTFORD. They performed on a St. Louis radio station as The Dillard Brothers in 1958, recording for a local label. As THE DILLARDS, they played their first show at Washington University in St. Louis then hit the road for Los Angeles in 1962. A DesiLu Studios rep saw an ad in Variety magazine about Elektra signing The Dillards, and within days they were called in to audition for the role of The Darlins on The Andy Griffith Show.
Their original songs have become bluegrass standards like “The Old Home Place,” “Dooley,” “Doug’s Tune,” “Banjo in the Holler” and “There is a Time.”
The Dillards incorporated stand-up comedy into their stage show, and their talents as entertainers brought bluegrass to new audiences in urban clubs from L.A. to New York City, on college campuses, in movie scores, at folk festivals and on tour with mainstream rock bands and comedians. Along the way, they became the all-time favorite act of then Ice House, now Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario BOB STANE.
The band’s unique flair for songwriting and arrangement affected a broad range of important future musicians in the bluegrass and pop music world alike, and they are credited with helping set the stage for the “country rock” movement and the burgeoning progressive sounds of bluegrass. The Dillards were inducted into the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2009.
Now, Rodney Dillard will be inducted into the Missouri Music Association's new Hall of Fame when the organization honors its three premier inductees in the bluegrass genre, THE DILLARDS, JOHN HARTFORD, and CHARLIE WOLFE. All three of the new inductees are currently members of the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame.
Missouri's new Hall of Fame (www.missourihalloffame.info) will recognize Missouri talent from all genres of music and will collaborate with other music organizations within the state of Missouri and elsewhere to provide a central database of Missouri talent. Initially, the Hall of Fame will include talent that has already been recognized by other Halls of Fame based on their music genre.
Rodney Dillard now tours with THE DILLARD BAND and the group is celebrating their Rural Rhythm Records album, “I Wish Life Was Like Mayberry.”
The band is gearing up for their new August 16 album release on Rural Rhythm, the decidedly gospel, “Don’t Wait for the Hearse to Take You to Church,” featuring BEVERLY DILLARD. Rodney and Beverly Dillard have launched their new “Mayberry Values Ministry” and perform at churches and other organizations throughout the country “inspiring families with their brand of humor, stories, testimonies and more,” says their label. More, including tour dates, is available at www.RodneyDillard.TV. More on the new release and other artists on the label at www.RuralRhythm.com.
