MAYDE IN IRELAND plays Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; 661-272-9530; www.butlerscoffee.com/music.html. “It pretty much started as a joke; a coupla local guys pretending to be an Irish folk-singing duo for a small, indie movie that was partially filmed at Butler's. But the joke was on us. Those rollicking' rascallions Randy and Dave, augmented by an occasional fiddle or mandolin player and collectively known as MAYDE IN IRELAND, have become one of Butler's favourite acts; a one-two punch of easy-going Celtic camaraderie, good times and good tunes that stretch from the (old) Dubliners to the Young Dubliners, from pastoral ballads to fire-spitting Pogues covers, and every little McNook and McCranny in between.” - Kevin Burton Smith, Butler's Coffee Music Guy.

The show comes complete with a writing staff (featuring actual late-night TV writers), a house band, and comic guest bits, all improvised before your eyes. We didn't want the usual, mind-numbing repetition of our set list to come between you, the audience, and us, the Flaw.” They really are quite good, despite their own banter to the contrary. Chuck's wry, rough-humored take on lives (some of them his) full of wrong turns and happy accidents will have you laughing (or squirming) in self-recognition -- when you're not tapping your feet or just nodding your head. If you're hankering for some smart, savvy songwriting, laced with dry wit and big wet hooks in the John Hiatt / Guy Clark / Lyle Lovett vein, check out Charlie B. -- he's got what you need.” - Kevin Burton Smith, Butler's Coffee Music Guy.

Sunday, September 11
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~

Today is 9-11...
Perhaps you wrote a song – or more – following 9-11, to help yourself or the rest of us comprehend or cope or make some kind of sense of it. Perhaps your song should be resurrected, or perhaps you now see it as something that served its purpose at the time. Have you moved on? Have we, as a nation, as a society, as humanity, moved on? Will we ever? And is the phrase, “moved on,” one that sounds too abrupt, insensitively dismissive, regardless of what we individually intend if we apply it here?
Who can cite the date without delving into a well of emotions? Once, it was the number you called in an emergency. Then it was a day so tragic that no one bothered to note the irony of countless 9-1-1 calls made on that on 9-11 and the unprecedented loss of life to emergency responders trying to protect others.
9-11 became forever engraved in history, as indelibly as December 7th. 9-11 became the shorthand date of an appallingly shocking and ultimate disaster, one wrought by fervently misguided religious zealotry that manifested as the inhuman hatred of man. It was a disaster, though not one brought by the mechanics of nature. It's become even sadder as one invoked and exploited by opportunistic politicians and fear-mongering profiteers ever since.
9-11 is a fitting time to consider the larger implications of our thoughts and feelings, then and now, and our progress (or the lack of it) as the dominant, yet sadly divided species on this small blue planet. It's a fitting time to ask our politicians whether contrarian intransigence is worthy of their silenced constituents, those whose unfulfilled promise and creativity and ability to contribute were lost on 9-11 – and their suffering constituents who rushed to help that day and in the days and months following, and who continue to suffer now as a result, yet receive little or no help from what should be a forever grateful nation. .
Just as Congress appears unable to help 9-11's surviving first responders, both political parties appear bereft of any real vision for a better future for all of us.
Clearly, the role of the artist isn't yet over.
(There's more. Read the complete piece, “9-11: The Part Played by Artists, and What's Still to be Done,” in this week's News Features.)

Band leader Kelly McCune says, “We're shooting photos at this fantastic brewery earlier in the day, and then playing at 5 pm. Come on downtown to this sprawling industrial dance hall with microbrewery and art gallery inside. Did I mention the wonderful beers they make? And you can see it right there, brewing up in gigantic vats...my personal fave is the Charlie Parker. Michael Bowe is the Brew Master responsible for this wonderfully made beer. We'll be shooting band photos for our new CD after 2 pm and then setting up to play at 5 pm. We'd love to see you there!”

This festival isn't overcrowded and you don't wait interminably long at the snack bar (which offers good food.) You can take your own chow, ice chest, whatever you like. Tent camping is around one side of the picturesque mill pond, and early birds get spots shaded by big cottonwood trees. Car parking is close enough you can access it easily (but you can't sleep in your car in the regular parking lot). Jamming in the RV campground is always good, and the campground has token-operated showers for all festival participants.
There's more info at www.inyo.org or you can contact InyoArts@Inyo.org or call 760-873-8014. For Bishop area lodging, restaurants & more, go to www.bishopVisitor.com.
We'll have more in our next edition, but this motivate you to indulge yourself in one, last, summer festival fling, get your tickets, and reserve your campground space or a motel in town.

8 pm MOYA BRENNAN and CORMAC DE BARRA, masters of the Irish harp, play the Caltech Folk Music Society series in Beckman Institute Auditorium on the Caltech Campus in Pasadena. Free parking is off Michigan Av, south of Del Mar. More on the show, the artists, and the series, at http://folkmusic.caltech.edu including info on upcoming shows.
KRISTINA OLSEN (www.kristinaolsen.net), previously scheduled, has been postponed until some time in 2012.
Nick Smith, co-booker of the series, tells us, “The silver lining in the cloud is that MOYA BRENNAN and CORMAC DE BARRA were looking for a local venue on the same day, and Voilà! They'll be coming to Caltech!”
MOYA BRENNAN is world renowned for for her angelic voice and harp playing, as a member of CLANNAD, one of Ireland's most prominent groups, and in various other settings, including work with the CHIEFTAINS, PAUL BRADY, and BONO. She is a strong link between traditional and modern Irish music.
CORMAC DE BARRA is a harpist, too, heavily involved in traditional Irish music and known for stretching the boundaries in many directions. He sings as well as plays, and the two have worked together in the past. Their recording, “Voices and Harps,” came out earlier this year and is attracting a lot of attention. This show is a fine opportunity to hear these two great musicians in an intimate setting. Tickets now on sale via website and phone number above. $20 adults, $5 for Caltech students and children.

Sun, Sep 18:
5:30-9 pm THE GRAND OLE ECHO presents “GRAMATHON” with roots artists celebrating the works of the late GRAM PARSONS; backed by the THE PALAMINO RIDERS, JESSE HARRIS, GREG HARRIS, JAY DEE MANESS, MIKE BAKER, & DON HEFFINGTON, are guest artists BRENNEN LEIGH, SUSAN JAMES, BRIAN WHELAN, LESLIE STEVENS, DAN JANISCH, & DAVID SERBY, at The Echo, 1822 Sunset Bl, Echo Park; 213-413-8200; www.attheecho.com.
With only one more 2011 show (next week), the series adopts a theme today and involves plenty of artists to carry it off.
The traditions of California Country music run through the veins of guitarist and singer songwriter Jesse Jay Harris. Jesse's musical traditions run deep, his father Greg Harris fronted the Flying Burrito Brothers for years after Gram Parson's untimely death. Greg worked with many influential musicians during these years including Garth Hudson and Rick Danko of The Band, Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, Sneaky Pete Kleinow of the Burritos and many others.
The influence of hanging around at these shows as a kid is still with Jesse and provides a strong foundation from with to draw, which is why his first solo release is aptly titled "Solid Ground" Jesse has played stages large and small in every corner of the state and elsewhere. The traditions of bluegrass, country, rock, blues, soul, and jazz have always been a part of Jesse's years of composing, playing, and producing. Jesse is currently focused on writing and producing his own brand of telecaster driven country rock. Currently residing in Los Angeles after a stint in San Francisco, California is still Jesse's playground, driving up and down the state to play shows as well as tours in Europe and elsewhere. More at www.jessejayharris.com and www.gregharrismusic.net
JAYDEE MANESS played on Gram Parson's records, was in the ISB band, was a Buckaroo and Vince Gill's steel player for years. A member of the Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame, a living legend, and and all around great guy. Check out his website, www.jaydeemaness.com

Lisa talks about and plays Cajun & zydeco music at www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbYuHlI2xxA.
Michael Lucas of the Los Angeles Times calls Lisa Hayley and the Zydekats’ music "a pop approach to Louisiana's sound...one-of-a-kind cornbread voice."
We find her marvelous, a world-class talent with a splendid and powerfully joyous voice. With her band, just back from a world tour that included the South Pacific Music Festival on Borneo (no kidding!), they play authentic, high-energy Americana / Louisiana / Pop / Folk music that is fun to sing along. It's an infectious repertoire, ranging from contemporary Louisiana music to 120-year-old traditional Cajun and zydeco songs, and they blend education with rollicking entertainment, teaching all ages about the rich history of Louisiana/Americana migration.
Lisa Haley & the Zydekats include the talents of Gigi Rabe “Accordion Diva”, Chuck Alvarez, Andy Anders, and fine drummer Maria Martinez. In addition to live performance and recordings, they have collaborated on major motion pictures, including "Where the Red Fern Grows," “The Muppet Movie,” “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and "Man in the Moon."
