Spotlight Events: Acoustic Americana Music Guide, December 16, 2011 edition UPDATED

CATCH THE BEST ANNUAL FREE SHOW IN L.A., Saturday, December 24, in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the L.A. Music Center. Includes a rich, multicultural variety of music, even some dance, and Grammy and other top award winners and nominees. Starts at 3 pm - be very early to get in line (free entertainment on the plaza from noon, on). See Dec 24 listing, below, for details and link.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Happy Tune-Filled Chrismakwanzika! Since the ancient Mayan Calendar extends only until December 20 of 2012, and according to some interpretations, that means the world is scheduled to end on December 21st next year, this might be the final year for us to celebrate with Holly and Ivy (aren't we lucky, having BOTH those girls here for the holidays! Ahh, yes...)

Oh, and the traditional holiday word, “NOEL”-? Well, that one is an ancient word that means “New light,” referring to the lengthening days after the Winter Solstice. It was drafted by Christians to represent the birth of Jesus, as in the carol, “The First Noel.” Things can indeed have origins different than their meanings today.

So, Happy Chrismakwanzika! Or if you prefer to observe the original thing celebrated on December 25th (before early Roman Christians under Constantine appropriated the date and started claiming it as Yeshua’s – Jesus’ – birthday), Happy Feast of Mithra. Of course, Hanukah has been celebrated for a very long time, though its eight days and nights are almost always concluded before December 25, so you still have time. Main thing is, whatever you choose to celebrate, let us all embrace Peace on Earth, and Good Will Among All People.

Fri, Dec 16:
6:30-8 pm Annual “MUSIC CENTER HOLIDAY SING-ALONG” on the plaza at the L.A. Music Center, downtown L.A. is free and a lot of fun. It's led by professional vocalists and always includes some instrumental accompaniment from members of the L.A. Phil. Only trick is, a free admission ticket is required to get a seat and a songbook, and tix are distributed beginning at 6 pm (one per person in line). Go, and you'll satisfy your hankering to vocalize all the holiday classics, and those around you will make you sound good. There's a complete song list at www.musiccenter.org/events/aa_singing.html
An indoor holiday music concert follows in the Walt Disney Concert Hall at 8 pm, but that's an expensive ticket and this one is free.

Fri, Dec 16; Thu-Sat, Dec 15-17; a SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK pick:
7 pm “TRIPPING THE '60s” is an energetic, highly entertaining retrospect by BARRY McGUIRE (“Eve of Destruction”) & JOHN YORK (The BYRDS) at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236. This isn't some show of classic '60s cover songs. Every song they perform has some personal connection with one or the other of these two well traveled veterans. For example, McGuire was the New Christy Minstrel who sang two of that group's biggest hits, and the Mamas and Papas began as his backup band. Of course, there's plenty more to the story, and he tells many stories that illuminate the music, all in fine form. You'll catch yourself singing along, and you'll thoroughly enjoy this show, whether you are reliving memories or learning there is far more to those old songs than you ever knew.

3 pm JEAN SUDBURY & RUBEN RAMOS at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
“The duo expertly weaves these distinct sounds to create music that is entirely their own, and they know it as well. Sudbury and Ramos’ new album is called Connexion Eclectique, a play on the duo’s unmistakable personality.” - Paolo Balboa, Socal.com.
Two professional musicians combine varied experience in life and music, creating a new style, The Eklectic Connection. The music is refreshingly original, yet traditional.
Jean Sudbury is a consummate violinist and mandolinist who offers an eclectic variety of music when she performs. She plays contemporary and classical music and loves the challenges of improvising and interpreting the music of the great masters. Her solo and section work includes concerts with small ensembles and big orchestras, recordings for TV and movies, and many compact disc collaborations with independent artists and composers. She has been fearured soloist on violin and mandolin with the Utah Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the American Ballet Theater Orchestra, and other noted ensembles. She has performed at such places as the Universal Amphitheater, the Greek Theater, the Disney Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, Warner Brother's Studios, Capitol Records, Sony Studios, the Cicada Club, the Hollywood Bowl, and on the Tonight Show. ''...infinitely expressive and technically dazzling,'' (L.A. Times,) Jean's music is a unique collection of life experiences.
Ruben Ramos is an accomplished guitarist and bassist who has played worldwide alongside his home base in the Los Angeles area for all his life. Ruben has worked with The Ten Tenors from Australia, Jim Stubblefield of the group Incendio (Flamenco), Eddie Money, Mike Gurley of the band Dada, Luis Bonilla (New York jazz trombonist with the Mingus Band, The Lincoln Center Orchestra and Marc Anthony). David Hasslehoff, Patty Andrews, Bea Arthur, Burliegh Drummond (Ambrosia and Tin Drum). Ruben has performed at venues including The San Diego Civic center, Historic Dayton Ohio Victoria Theater, Catalina Jazz Club, The Hollywood Bowl, The Wiltern, Alex Theater Glendale.

Latin, French, Italian, Brazilian and mixed with Americana roots. Jean and Ruben will be accompanied by Carl Royce on upright bass. TIX, $20 adults, $18 students.

8 pm “ROY ZIMMERMAN: PEACENIK” presents “A PEACENIK HOLIDAY” at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236.
“He's the BEST sociopolitical comedic songwriter performing today, period.” - Acoustic Americana Music Guide.
Funny songwriter Roy Zimmerman brings the sting of satire to the struggle for Peace and Justice. “PeaceNick” is Zimmerman’s send-up of the political, social and even spiritual absurdities of the Holiday season - ninety minutes of hilarious and heartfelt songs from a decidedly Lefty-Pacifist-Humanist point of view. And it's family friendly. Happy “Christma-Hanu-Rama-Ka-Dona-Kwaanza”!
The Los Angeles Times says, “Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society’s foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer.”
Tom Lehrer himself says, "I congratulate Roy Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy songs. And the rhymes actually rhyme, they don't just 'rhyne.'"
Joni Mitchel says, "Roy's lyrics move beyond poetry and achieve perfection." Tix, $15.

Fri, Jan 6, 2012; a SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK pick:
8 pm ERNEST TROOST plays his CD release show with special guest SHAUN CROMWELL at McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl (Pico at 31st), Santa Monica 90405; www.mccabes.com; 310-828-4403; tix, 310-828-4497.
It seems only fitting that Ernest Troost’s newest album, “Ernest Troost Live at McCabe's,” (slated for general release January 17, 2012) was recorded at the very venue that inspired him to begin songwriting and performing, and it will come full circle with a CD release party at 8 pm on January 6, 2012, at the place it was recorded almost exactly a year ago. The show is sure to sell-out.
Ernest's previous album, “Resurrection Blues,” reached #5 on the Folk-DJ airplay chart in 2010. He was already a New Folk Winner at the 2009 Kerrville Folk Festival, that annual three-week-long extravanganza in Texas.
The new live album features some of the most popular selections from his two previous records, “All the Boats Are Gonna Rise” and “Resurrection Blues,” together with seven new songs. It was all recorded a year ago, on January 8, 2011. The record captures an evening of Ernest’s songs that slowly build from solo performance to a full band.
It will be the first concert of McCabe’s 2012 season. Get your tix in advance or miss out.

Annual “NAMM SHOW” takes over the entire Anaheim Convention Center and convention facilities in nearby hotels. We'll keep you posted as we learn about all that.

UPDATED EDITIONS of The Guide’s weekly News Features and Spotlight Events bring more (always more -- as we have time to organize all of it).

We do all we can to bring you news and notices of all the many, many, MANY acoustic music events in and around the Los Angeles region, from the North border of Santa Barbara County to the South border of Orange County, and inland through San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

Plus, we tell you about RADIO SHOWS with acoustic music, focusing on those with live acoustic performances. (They're available mostly on the web, of course, since we are in acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.)

And, we bring news and reviews of the many acoustic music FESTIVALS near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere! With your help, we'll keep doing it!

Just delete all the spaces – the address is presented that way because we're tryin’ desperately to escape some of the spam and stupid crap we receive every day... it seems that the bad-guy email harvesters can get around even Javascript’s encoding thing...
