♪ 1) GRAMMY DIVERSITY REGAINS A LITTLE OF WHAT THEY THREW-OUT

The Latin Jazz Category for the GRAMMY has been reinstated. Southern Cal-based musician and GRAMY nominee LISA HALEY tells us, “This is very good news, but the folks behind Latin Jazz had to hire a New York lawyer and threaten NARAS with a lawsuit to get this action done. The lawsuit uncovered the fact that the 20-member ‘committee’ which decided what categories to cut was comprised mostly of hip-hop and rap artists.”
+
Lisa was nominated a few years ago in the consolidated Cajun-Zydeco GRAMMY category. That one always needed to be at least two separate awards. Instead, it’s was among those eliminated altogether.
+
Lisa believes, “If we move quickly to start a petition to reinstate the Cajun/Zydeco Category, I believe we would have support from my friends who helped get the Latin Jazz category back (Santana and Pablo Sanchez helped them a lot.)”
+
Otherwise, what would be less interesting than a GRAMMY telecast of nothing but rap and hip-hop?

O'Malley's tale is the true story of adventure on the high seas off the coast of Britain. Her estate and home seized by the English nobleman Governor Bingham, O'Malley makes a pact with Queen Elizabeth I that affords Grace the ability to roam the seas near England, engaging and plundering foreign vessels and discouraging invasion. The pirate queen's decades-long seafaring career extended well into her 70s. Marriage and children were also part of her rich, full life. ♪ 8) SOMETHING WE’D REALLY LIKE TO SEE …
Nothing gets done there, and there isn’t even any entertainment value there anymore. But there could be. This is the best chance in a loooong time. Wait for it.
+
Next week, Student Loan interest rates will double, causing the average full-time college student to pay an additional $1,000 over the life of their loan, just for one year of their education. The current Transportation Act expires, and thousands more workers will be jobless, in spite of the countless highway and other renewal / improvement / upgrade / reconstruction / new construction projects that we desperately need.
+
Of course, the dithering, do-nothing Congress is on a break again, because they always “work” a short week. And when they’re there, they’ve been obsessed with charging the nation’s Attorney General, Eric Holder, with being in Contempt of Congress.
+
We won’t get into the “why,” but suffice it to say that California Congressman Darrel Issa has demanded documents that would place Holder in violation of the law if he provides them.
+
Thus, there’s something we’d like to see at a Congressional hearing next week…
+
Congressman Issa: “Mr. Attorney General, are you here to provide the 200,000 additional pages of documents in addition to the 20,000 pages the committee has received?”
+
Attorney General Holder: “Mr. Issa, I am here to invoke recent history. First, last week, the United States Supreme Court ruled the expletives that previously brought fines from the FCC when heard on television will no longer be fined. Second, when Dick Cheney was Vice President, he once, infamously, and on the floor of the United States Senate, invited an elected U.S. Senator to commit an unnatural act on himself.”
+
Congressman Issa: “What’s that got to do with giving us every document in the Justice Department since you took over there, from receipts for the janitor’s soap to warranties on the filters for the air conditioners?”
+
Attorney General Holder: “I’m getting there. When Dick Cheney voiced his then-obscene invitation, it was picked-up by CSPAN camera mics. It was of interest for broadcast by all the networks, but had to be subsequently bleeped.”
+
Congressman Issa: “But what about the memo pads from the cafeteria with the chef’s recipes? My wife wants the one for meat loaf, and if I don’t get it, I’m prepared to take the Contempt of Congress citation against you to the floor of the House of Representatives!”
+
Attorney General Holder: “I am unwilling to be the cause of your failure to prevent a doubling of Student Loan rates. I am unwilling to be the cause of you failing to pass an extension to preserve the many thousands of jobs that will be lost if the Transportation Act expires. It seems to me that you have real work to do here, and it’s providing cover for you to avoid doing any of it because I am sitting here. It seems to me that I should not be providing you with cover.
+
Holder: “Mr. Issa, you and members of your party refused to allow a Contempt of Congress citation to be filed against Vice President Cheney because he was an official of the Executive Department and, in addition, you said at the time that the real outrage would be to censure him for using his right to Free Speech.
+
… “Now that the Supreme Court has ruled it’s permissible for such words to be broadcast on television, we must all reckon with the possibilities of what Cheney said.
+
… “Accordingly, Mr. Issa, since I am a serving member of the Executive Department, as was Mr. Cheney, I’ve decided to play this by your interpretation.
+
… “Therefore, I extend to you the same invitation, in the exact same words, that Vice President Cheney extended to one of your colleagues, an elected member of the Congress.
+
… “Mr. Issa, relative to your Contempt of Congress charges, Go F___ yourself.”
+
Then, having finished, Attorney General Holder gets up and walks out. It would be beautiful.
+
The whole country would laugh, and the focus would be on the dithering morons in Congress who waste time with vitriol, do no meaningful work except to benefit their campaign contributors, fail to pass a Jobs Bill, fail to support arts funding, fail to help students continue to get lower rates to fund their education, or do anything else to promote an economic recovery. We’d really like to see it. Ah, well, maybe Jon Stewart or Colbert will run with the ball…

Sun, Jun 24; Sat & Sun, Jun 23 & 24, FESTIVAL,
a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick,
in Vista, San Diego Co:
39th annual “SCOTTISH HIGHLAND GAMES & GATHERING OF THE CLANS” with Celtic music and a whole lot more, in Brengle Terrace Park, Vista.
+
When celebrating in times of peace, one of the Highlanders' favorite pastimes was the tainchel, a "great hunt" in which several clans would often combine. Chieftains would send word to the clansmen that such an event was planned and when and where they should assemble. After a successful hunt, a great feast and celebration would be held. Then, the rival clansmen would test each other's prowess at various sports - running, jumping, wrestling, or primitive forms of weight - putting with stones, or divided into roughly equal sides vying against each other in a very early form of camanachd or shinty.
+
Lastly, came the music. The clansmen would vie with each other in piping and in dancing, the pipers taking turns to demonstrate their skills, and the clansmen to demonstrate their agility and neatness of movement by dancing complicated steps to the pipe music. These relaxations were in effect the forerunners of the modern Highland games, and it’s all celebrated here. Adults 16 over are $12, seniors (over age 62) and military are $8, and youth (ages 6-16) are $5. For more information, visit: www.sdhighlandgames.org.

4 pm JOYCE WOODSON & TERESA TUDURY share the bill at the “Fonda Friends House Concert” series in La Habra. Reservations get directions at jonitabd@gmail.com or 562-665-5088.
+
Two award-winning singer-songwriters share their original songs in the privacy of a friend’s living room. A great way to spend a summer afternoon.
+
TERESA TUDURY takes you on a musical journey of wild and powerful songs and stories from the depths of her incredibly rich and inspiring repertoire. From her San Francisco roots to the Greek Islands to New York and L.A., she brings her experiences to her wide-awake music, creating a loyal following and rave reviews wherever she performs. She has been likened to "Leonard Cohen meets Bessie Smith." More at www.teresatudury.net.
+
JOYCE WOODSON Joyce recently won the “Best Song of the Year” award from the Western Music Association, but she easily transcends the “cowboy” genre. Her crystal clear voice and fine guitar-playing are as adept in the folk music world as they are wending her way through the West with powerful or touching original songs about the land. Ad to that her strength in storytelling, bringing characters to life as if they’re hunkered down at the campfire next to you. "Joyce has a voice that can either break a heart or mend one." – Pat S., Virginia. More at www.joycewoodson.com.

Fri, Jul 13, in Ventura Co, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
8 pm WHISKEY CHIMP, a Southern Cal favorite, plays a rare show for the “FIRESIDE CONCERT SERIES” at Borchard Community Center, 190 Reino Rd, Newbury Park. Hosted By Bob Kroll, sponsored by Conejo Recreation & Park District.
+
The members of this band are on tour with other bands, including playing on national TV much of the year, and it's just plain hard to get them together anymore. But, voila! – Bob Kroll did, for a special summer edition of this series (it usually runs fall-to-spring).
+
WHISKEY CHIMP takes its audience on a genre-bending roller coaster of musical emotions. Starting from very traditional bluegrass, they may venture deep into punk rock roots or move into a rousing Mariachi ballad. Whiskey Chimp’s repertoire of refreshing original material and choice cover songs delightfully violate all the rules of engagement. Their simian stage antic and electrifying performances keep audiences entertained throughout the night. From their first song to their encore, it is very apparent these guys are having a blast.
+
They are Chris Cairns on bluegrass banjo; Toby Emery on punk vocals and mandolin; Bill Flores (a seemingly bottomless talent) on accordion / clarinet / Dobro / fiddle / guitar; Stanley Gonzales on vocals and rock-n-roll ukulele; Brent Harding on vocals and slapping upright bass; Mark Parson on Cajun-style fiddle and vocals; and Cory Scrivner on roots and folk-based vocals and guitar. Featuring tight four-part harmony and blazing instrumentals, “The Chimp,” as they are affectionately known by their fans, leave their audiences clamoring for more. Fasten your seat belts as you witness a mesmerizing musical experience.
+
Tix, $13, at the door. Adults only, no children. Arrive early for a good seat.

One of his numerous solo CDs was hailed by FI Magazine as “The Best Recording of 1998,” and “One of the Top 100 CDs of All Time.” He plays guitar brilliantly and writes remarkable songs of depth and beauty, while retaining accessible melodies and musicality. His voice has been described as an instrument of beauty and finesse. Venue impresario BOB STANE adds, “And he's a funny guy. It's truly amazing. He should be President of the World. Really.”
