Fri, Jun 8:
7 pm ERIC RIGLER & BAD HAGGIS bring their Celtic roots / Celtic rock to the Farmers Market, Third & Fairfax, L.A.
+
Described as "the most recorded piper of all time," Eric is constantly in demand in studios from Hollywood to Nashville to Abbey Road, bringing the timeless, haunting sonorities of the uilleann pipes, the Great Highland Bagpipe, and the low whistle to film, television, and recording audiences around the world. He has been featured playing Great Highland bagpipes, Uilleann pipes and tin whistle on numerous movie soundtracks, including Titanic, Million Dollar Baby, Road to Perdition, Braveheart, Cinderella Man, Robots, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and DreamWorks's The Prince of Egypt.
+
His band, BAD HAGGIS, has a musical identity quite different from that. They are outfit that fuses cutting-edge Celtic with influences of rock, alternative, jazz, pop, groove, world beat, African and Latin influences. From the dual leads of the "bagtar" (bagpipe & guitar) by Eric and guitarist MIKE HOFFMANN, to the deeply grooving rhythms laid down by bassist/vocalist MICK LINDEN, Brazilian drummer/vocalist ROGERIO JARDIM and Colombian percussionist ALBERTO LOPEZ, BAD HAGGIS employs a new musical vocabulary to create an exciting fusion of sound. Traditionalists sometimes wish the band would back-off and let Eric take the lead with more traditional Celtic fare. Others just want the high energy music of the band.

James says, “I am reaching out to you to help a woman who has given her life to traditional music in this country, Rosalie Sorrels. She has toured the country performing since the 1950s; as a friend and cohort of musical luminaries such as PETE SEEGER, UTAH PHILLIPS, MALVINA REYNOLDS, THE WEAVERS, and it just keeps going. She's in need of a little help and I am doing this concert Saturday night and giving all the gate to her. Please come to the show, help out a national treasure of a woman, and you'll also have a really good time, as I am no slouch myself in the entertainment department.”

JAMES LEE STANLEY has toured with everyone from ROBIN WILLIAMS to STEPHEN STILLS; STEVEN WRIGHT to BONNIE RAITT. One of his numerous solo CDs was hailed by FI Magazine as “The Best Recording of 1998,” and “One of the Top 100 CDs of All Time.” He plays guitar brilliantly and writes remarkable songs of depth and beauty, while retaining accessible melodies and musicality. Sun, Jun 10 matinee; a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
3 pm KEN O'MALLEY performs "IRELAND'S EMIGRANTS AND THE ATLANTIC CROSSING" at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 92675; reservations, 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm, daily).
+
From the creaking boards of the decks of the "coffin ships" of the Famine years of the 840''s to the transatlantic liners of the mid 0tth century, the story of Ireland's people leaving home is brought to life in story and song by Ken O'Malley, himself an emigrant in the 970''s. The "American Wake" was a farewell to those who left Ireland's shores, never to return. The New World waited, though not always with the outstretched hand of welcome. Nonetheless, the Irish survived and with tenacity they built their future and that of their new land.
+
Dublin born Ken O’Malley's rich, resonant voice and engaging stage presence hAv delighted audiences for over thirty years."He holds nothing back. Whether singing a passionate ballad, playing a solo on the mandolin, or explaining the gloriously sad history of Erin his homeland, Ken O’Malley is all-in, wide open to the world, and as true as an arrow’s flight. Ken’s fine tenor voice could carry him through a show all alone, but he backs himself beautifully on guitar and mandolin. . . .His wonderful wit and good humor draw us in and carry us along, and the beauty of his songs, both traditional and original, fills us with irresistible joy."
+
With songs in both English and Irish Gaelic, a Ken O'Malley performance is suitable for all ages and has something for everyone. As one longtime fan says, “the songs Ken sings touch all of us, Irish or not, to the very core of the human heart”. More at www.kenomalley.com.

Released on February 4th, 1977, “Rumours” became one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, and made Fleetwood Mac a household name.
+
It's now the 35th Anniversary of the album release, and Ken Caillat's new book “MAKING RUMOURS: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album” tells the story from his perspective, of what really went into the making of this legendary album that was to become one of the biggest selling and most influential rock albums of all time. The book takes readers behind the scenes in the Sausalito recording studio and documents the making of what would come to be 1977's GRAMMY “Album of the Year.”

Ken recalls experiences from an era of excess that included endless partying, relationship dramas and creative struggles, while writing and recording classic tracks like "You Make Loving Fun," "Don't Stop," "Go Your Own Way," "The Chain," among others. Sat, Jun 16, FESTIVAL,
in Pasadena,
the free “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” festival pick:
11 am-11 pm annual “MAKE MUSIC PASADENA,” the local expression of the global “FETE DE LA MUSIQUE” from France, has stages galore, all free, and the acts to catch are THE DUSTBOWL REVIVAL, JESSICA FICHOT, MOJACAR FLAMENCO, GERARDO MORALES FLAMENCO, SOKO, Y LA BAMBA, HONEYHONEY, LA SANTA CECILIA, GUSTAVO GALINDO, CORREATOWN, and there are many, many more to explore, at various locations in Old Town Pasadena.
+
Musically and geographically, this thing is all over the map. You’ll find some folk-Americana performances, some acoustic renaissance music, and you can suddenly wander into a thudding, over-amplified performance space with god-only-knows-what, blasting from an arena package of speakers.
+
Some performances are on formal stages with all the amenities, but others will (hopefully) continue to preserve the feel of the event as it began here, and as it is in France, where musicians can be found playing unplugged in rather primitive and impromptu performance spaces. That’s strings, horns, harmonicas, autoharps, dulcimers (both kinds), percussion, and unaccompanied voices. Plan to navigate to the acts you know you want to see, and allow time for discovery and exploration that avoids getting trapped where you know you don’t want to be. It really is something, and it can be a whole lot of fun. Check the full program, at least the part that’s official, at www.makemusicpasadena.org/program.html.
+
It’s all ages, and it’s all free!

Janet’s band THE PARLOR BOYS include sensational musicians: JOHN REYNOLDS has been called “best-on-the-planet 1930s style guitarist” and plectrum banjo whistling master; hobo bon vivant MARQUIS HOWELL plays stand-up bass with an authentically inspired vintage panache; the ever entertaining IAN WHITCOMB – GRAMMY winner, author, historian and British invader of pop music fame back in the 1960s; and the extraordinary BENNY BRYDERN, classically trained violin player who spends his summers conducting orchestras in Europe. All the gents in the group avidly collect old recordings – 78 rpm records and earlier – and are immersed in the pursuit of capturing an authentic and adroit vintage sound by way their own personal and soulful musical style.

The Guide’s weekly News Features and Spotlight Events, in ever-UPDATED EDITIONS will continue to bring you more news of concerts, club gigs, workshops, benefit shows, festivals and more (always more -- as we dig out from beneath the incoming mountains of email telling us about it, so we can organize it and tell YOU about all of it).
.
We’ll keep covering the world of current acoustic music happenings and bringing you "heads up" notices to buy advance tix for shows likely to sell-out – and lots more.
We’ll continue to tell you what acoustic musicians are doing, in the studio, on the stage, and as activist / artists seeking to improve things for all of us. We’ll tell you about the growing number of radio & TV shows with live acoustic performances (when it’s radio, it’s available mostly on the web, of course, since the Guide is published from acoustic-music-radio-deprived Los Angeles.) .
.
And, as Summer arrives and the 2012 FESTIVAL SEASON progresses, we’ll bring you news and reviews of the many acoustic music festivals happening near and far, hither and yon, here, there and everywhere.
.
As always, thanks for making the journey with us. With your help, the road goes on forever (even if we can’t afford the gas anymore to find out where it goes)! .
