.
This weekend has an exceptionally strong opening, with tough choices on Friday evening.
.
A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION makes its annual live-performance visit, bringing Lake Woebegone to the City of Angels, back at the Hollywood Bowl after spending the past few years at smaller venues.
.
At the Greek Theatre, it's a STRING CHEESE INCIDENT, by the band who calls each performance an "incident."
.
Up in Ventura County, there's a rare local performance by the splendid WHISKEY CHIMP, for the Fireside Concert series in Newbury Park.
.
McCabe's in Santa Monica hosts a UKULELE SHOW with Grammy winner IAN WHITCOMB and Southern Cal favorite multi-instrumentalist FRED SOKOLOW.
.
Meanwhile, the SCARLET FURIES and BELVEDERE play the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena.
.
The show at the Bowl should be a strong one. Guests include SARA WATKINS (of Nickel Creek), MARTIN SHEEN, ELLIE DEHN, JEARLYN STEELE, JEVETTA STEELE, performances by the Royal Academy of Radio Actors, the Guy's All Star Shoe Band, and of course GARRISON KEILLOR's signature skits, bits, storytelling, and sitting-in with musical guests. Tix are available in a wide price range at www.scpr.org/events and there's a nice feature (read or listen) on Patt Morrison's page on the station's site.
.
The Guide's June 30 edition has a full feature on WHISKEY CHIMP's show.
.
Point is, don't stay home on Friday!
.
The Guide's upcoming edition, late Thursday, will bring you news of a pair of L.A. events for the ongoing celebration of WOODY GUTHRIE's 100th Birthday, and both happen on Saturday.
.
LOTS more ahead, all in our next edition, but hop on those Friday tickets now!
