Thursday: a BIG night of music! August 30, 2012

.
South Pasadena becomes a free music mecca tonight, and that's not all:
.
UPDATE at 5:22 pm: LISA HALEY CONCERT has moved inside the library; Farmers Market cancelled, due to the sudden downpour of rain...
.
The "End of Summer Concert Celebration" brings Grammy-noms LISA HALEY & THE ZYDEKATS, playing 5-6:30 pm on an outdoor stage outside the library at 1115 El Centro St, South Pasadena. That's just around the corner, off the southeast end of the weekly Farmers Market. There tonight, WHEN PIGS FLY play their dulcimer-based folk music from 4-7 pm on the stage at the other end of the market, at Mission & Meridian (next to the Gold Line light rail's Mission Station). Bring a chair or blanket and catch some of both.
.
Also adjacent to the market, BARRY "BIG B" BRENNER plays his weekly acoustic blues gig, 6-9 pm at Firefly Bistro, 1009 El Centro, South Pasadena.
.
In Santa Monica, NEW ORLEANS OWN HOT 8 BRASS BAND, plus THE GUMBO BROTHERS, play this year's closing show of the 28th annual "Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance Series." It's 7-10 pm and it's free, though nearby parking is pricey. Free street parking is about 3/4 mile inland...
.
This month's "AMERICANA MUSIC CIRCLE" brings JOHNNY TOWNSEND, TED RUSSELL KAMP, and performing hostess LAUREN ADAMS and her band to Genghis Cohen in L.A., and they start at 7 pm. (More on the musicians in the Guide's full edition.)
.
ERIC BIBB'S STRING BAND, including DIRK POWELL and CEDRIC WATSON, each a music legend in his ow ann right, are the best show this year at the Skirball Cultural Center, just off the 405 fwy atop Sepulveda Pass. That's at 8 pm.
.
Up in Altadena, TED & PABLO bring their "Transcontinental Musical Express" to the Coffee Gallery Backstage at 8 pm.
.
Down in south OC, HAPA and AOLANI KAEKA bring the music of Hawai'i to the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano at 8.
.
Believe it or not, there's even MORE happening tonight, and plenty tomorrow and in the days and weeks following. Wednesday's Best Events, August 29, 2012

.
There's a fun FREE event, 6-9 tonight; the TRISHAS play a set in Hollywood at 7 pm (en route to playing the STRAWBERRY MUSIC FESTIVAL this weekend); there's a fun short film on TV, and a good show in San Diego; but the best show in the L.A. area starts late, at 9 pm.
.
PLUS A COUPLE OF ADDITIONAL THINGS, added late...
.
Here's what's up...
.
6 pm Singer-songwriter ROBERT MORGAN FISHER does a performance-interview on web radio at www.indieshowcase.net
.
6-9 pm "WILD WEST CONCERTS SUMMER FINALE" and BBQ brings THE SILVERADOS (not Mike Nadolson's Silverado Bluegrass Band) to Temple City Park, 9701 Las Tunas Dr, Temple City (in the SGV). Also performing is TRICK ROPER DAVE and there's professional line dance instruction. Despite the series' name, this finale is the only nominally western show, and the band is really rather country. The BBQ looks good: $8 ($7 advance) for tri tip or chicken, with sides. Band plays in an excellent bandstand-gazebo. Plenty of shade trees. Bring a chair or blanket. Your own picnic is okay. FREE CONCERT.
.
THE TRISHAS, a female ensemble that sounds good and folky, plays the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood at 7 pm.
.
In San Diego at 7 pm, ELENI MANDELL and CHARLIE WADHAMS play Anthology.
.
DUANE THORIN, with his reconstituted SOUL RUSTLERS, plays Viva Cantina's front stage tonight and tomorrow in Burbank. No cover, no minimum, free parking across the street at Pickwick Bowl, good food. Appearing with the Soul Rustlers are touring guitar couple Lisa Carbe and JP Durand of the fiery acoustic guitar trio INCENDIO. Also appearing as a SOUL RUSTLER is fabulous flatpicking guitarist Alex Finazzo. You will know him from his bluegrass collaborations with the great Evan Marshall.
.
The best L.A.-area show is HAPA at 9 pm at Sainte Rocke, 142 PCH, Hermosa Beach. The NY Times calls HAPA "The most successful Hawai'ian music troupe in recent history." Doors at 5, so you can go early and eat there. Aloha.
.
On TV, 8:47-9 pm, "ON THE AIR" (1939) is on Turner Classic Movies on cable or satellite TV. Big bands do "It Had to Be You," "Tea for Two," and more.
.
.
There's MUCH more, as always, in the latest full edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide ... latest is the August 24 edition of "Spotlight Events" and it's available below or in the sidebar at left, depending on which edition you are reading.
.
Much more soon!

A 5 pm ukulele workshop at the Grammy Museum and two performances (one a showcase) are tonight's highlights.

It's in the pleasant covered courtyard, no cover, but venue is a restaurant and bar, so plan to buy something.
.
At the GRAMMY Museum's Clive Davis Theatre, at 7:30 pm, it's Hawai'ian music legend DANIEL HO performing before the screening of "MY KOALOHA STORY, the latest in the museum's "Reel to Real" series. Koaloha Ukulele ownee ALVIN OKANI, whose multigenerational story is told in the film, is joined by family members from their acclaimed uke factory.

Eschewing Celebrity: Neil Armstrong's Lesson for Artists

.
We, in music, are fond of calling ourselves artists, to credit ourselves with creativity. At the heart of things, we are in show biz, and that conveys a wholly different set of images.
.
The most successful musicians gain acclaim. That imparts celebrity. That leads to certain groups of people wanting, obsessively, to know about us, our lives, preferences, passions, and things that most of us would rather keep private.
.
When he became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, NEIL ARMSTRONG became an instant celebrity. Except he rejected the celebrity mantle for the rest of his life.
.
Icon of exploration? Yes. The real Captain Kirk? Yes, considering he had to manually land the Apollo 11 Lunar Module on the moon after its overloaded computer failed, and the craft was descending into dangerous terrain. Armstrong took the controls and literally TOOK control, finding a safe place to land with nearly all the fuel gone and outside the allowable limits of what NASA's "mission profile" was designed to allow.
.
He could have made a lot of that. He could have allowed others to trumpet it and inflate his celebrity-mantle and get product endorsement deals and all the other things that celebrities get to line their pockets and increase their cachet as celebrities to be pursued, invasively, as public property.
.
A year after Apollo, he quietly took a job as Professor of Engineering, not at MIT or Harvard or Caltech, but in Cincinnati, in his home state of Ohio. There, as a teacher, he made a difference in the lives of his students, as all teachers have the power to do.
.
As artists, we hope we can inspire others to aspire to great things, to attempt something life-changing, or simply to put those who hear our music in a better place, a happier state of mind from which better things happen and a better world is possible.
.
Sometimes artists chase fame. At those times, Neil Armstrong's words are worth remembering:
.
“I am, and ever will be, a white socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer,” he said in February 2000 in one of his rare public appearances. “And I take a substantial amount of pride in the accomplishments of my profession.”
.
We all sense that we never really knew Neil Armstrong, who died Saturday at the age of 82. Yet, maybe we did. When we identify with the enduring pride of a professional and a personal life of meaningful accomplishment, rather than seizing an opportunity to make our lives about some exploitable moment, then we know the greatest legacy of Neil Armstrong.
.

WRECK N SOW is a first-rate L.A.-based string quartet, with a guitar, a bass guitar, a fiddle and a mandolin. They will tell you that, like Monopoly, they entertain people aged eight to eighty. Bluegrass? They do that. Folk? That too. Country Western? Absolutely. Americana? Well they are from America. Using strings and voices, they offer-up familiar and original songs of love, lost love and no love, songs about family, heaven and hell, small animals, driving, dancing, lots of money and heavy farm equipment.
+
Wreck N Sow performed live for the first time in February 2006. Since then, Pierre Dupuy (guitar), Randy Cochran (bass fiddle), Mike Stave (fiddle) and Andre Dupuy (mandolin) have entertained Southern Californians at theaters, festivals, restaurants, bars, museums, private parties, two Jewish weddings and a pancake breakfast. They’ve recorded two CDs; “First Harvest”, released to coincide with their appearance at the inaugural 2007 Stagecoach Festival and 2009’s “Second Thoughts.” They are currently working on their third CD. Their website, www.wrecknsow.com, features pictures, videos and notices of their upcoming shows.

ED MUNTER is amazing. He was a guest on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks” when he was doing a one-man folk-opera in the mid double-oughts and he proved to be an artist of considerable depth and accessible ideas. His songwriting and arrangements are way ahead of others who are recognized among the best. Why he isn’t famous is a major mystery. Go see him. – Acoustic Americana Music Guide.

8 pm BROTHER SUN plays the Trinity Backstage Coffee House, 1500 State St, Santa Barbara 93101; 805-962-2970.
+
“What happens when you unite three of the best male singers in the folk realm who already revel in harmony singing? Brother Sun.” says Rich Warren, longtime host of WMFT Chicago’s Nationally Syndicated Folk Radio Show “The Midnight Special.”
+
BROTHER SUN – aka Joe Jencks, Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor – have made their mark as veteran touring singer-songwriters, but this is not a songwriter's round. Warren continues, “While numerous delightful female trios harmonize, few men bond that way these days (unlike the days of the folk revival when they were the norm). Added to great voices, energy and sincerity are worthy compositions in three distinct styles that bring to mind a modern day gospel." Fusing folk, Americana, blues, pop, jazz, rock, and a cappella singing, Brother Sun is musical diversity and harmony, in the male singing tradition, three rich voices blending on a well-crafted foundation of guitar, slide guitar, and piano.

Tue, Aug 28, film & live music performance, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
7:30 pm DANIEL HO, Hawai’ian music legend, performs prior to the screening of “MY KOALOHA STORY,” the latest in the “REEL TO REAL” series at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Sound Stage, 800 W Olympic Bl, L.A. 90015; 213-765-6803; www.grammymuseum.org.
+
Traditionally a Hawai’ian instrument, the 4-string guitar-like ukulele has found a niche in popular music and has been embraced by the mainstream of folk-Americana. Its unique sound can impart an instant island tone to any piece of music.
+
“My KoAloha Story” follows KoAloha Ukulele owner ALVIN OKAMI and his journey into the craft. Alvin and his ohana – Hawai’iain for “family” – have been dedicated to crafting the highest quality ukes for going on two decades. Their story goes beyond that, into music and family and how a small instrument can change lives and bring people together. ALAN joins ALVIN, two members of the OKAMI KoAloha ohana at this evening event.
+
Before the program, guests are welcome to DANIEL HO and ALAN OKAMI for a one-hour workshop titled “UKULELE 101” at 5 pm. It’s an informal class, a fun and educational opportunity to learn more about the beloved little ukulele. Done in Hawai’ian “talk story” style, both Danial and Alan share their love for, and knowledge of, this special instrument. You are welcome to bring your uke to learn to strum along, though you can attend without one.
+
Presented by American Express, and AmEx ticket purchasers will receive a special gift. All proceeds benefit the GRAMMY Museum. More info, 213-765-6803. Tix are $10 advance, available only by AmEx card until August 15; check with venue for price and availability at door.

Thu, Aug 30, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
7 pm monthly AMERICANA MUSIC CIRCLE” brings performances by JOHNNY TOWNSEND, TED RUSSELL KAMP, and performing host Lauren Adams with her LAUREN ADAMS BAND, featuring DEBRA DOBKIN, HANK VANSICKLE, NICK KIRGO & DAVE FRASER, at Genghis Cohen, 740 N Fairfax Av, Los Angeles 90046.
+
JOHNNY TOWNSEND, www.johntown.com, during his long and prolific music career, has appeared on stage with a multitude of music icons. They include JIMI HENDRIX, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, LOGGINS AND MESSINA, JIMMY BUFFETT, LITTLE FEAT, FLEETWOOD MAC, THE LITTLE RIVER BAND, and a host of Southern Rock artists including THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND, CHARLIE DANIELS, DICKEY BETTS GREAT SOUTHERN, SEA LEAVELL, and THE DIXIE DREGGS. During and after his days with THE SANFORD/TOWNSEND BAND, Johnny was an in-demand studio vocalist and songwriter working with a background vocal trio of himself, MICHAEL McDONALD & Jackson Browne vocalist ROSEMARY BUTLER. The trio's voices appeared on dozens of music albums during the ’70s and ’80s. Many of those were gold and platinum efforts. Johnny also co-wrote songs on gold and platinum albums with LOGGINS & MESSINA, and Kenny Loggins’ first solo record, and GREGG ALLMAN's "Just Before The Bullets Fly" album, and LARRY CARLTON's "Lightning Strikes Twice" album, and many others.
+
TED RUSSELL KAMP, www.tedrussellkamp.com, has long been making good solo records around his gig as the bassist for SHOOTER JENNINGS. As a singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist, Kamp’s sixth solo record essentially works the same groove as his prior work, with blues, jazz and pop strains laced through a base of early ’70s country rock. The difference is that his song-smithery is simply tighter and more tuneful than before. From the jaunty barrelhouse of “Aces & Eights” to the burning blues of “Time is a Joker” and the sardonic C&W of the title track, to the sparkling jangle of “California Wildflower,” the anthemic roots rock of “God’s Little Acre” and the soulful balladry of “(Down at the) 7th Heaven,” Kamp simply knocks one ball after another out of the park. Clichés become new ideas in Kamp’s mind (dip into his song “Half Hearted” for an example). His melodies find a comforting home in his hands. Strings and horns and the singing are personable and heartfelt. “Saturated in talent and sincerity, ‘Get Back To the Land’ is nothing more than good music done right.” (Adapted from a piece by Michael Toland, April 28, 2011.)

They are Ted Falcon, mandolin and violin; Pablo Fagundes, harmonicas; Marcus Moraes - guitar; George Lacerda – percussion. Falcon hooks up with harmonica virtuoso Fagundes in a program of Brazilian and American music. Their new CD, “Ted & Pablo—Transcontinental Music Express,” recorded in Brazil, includes many original compositions as well as references to composers of both countries including Ernesto Nazareth and David Grisman.
+
Falcon, an American, has dedicated himself to the study of the mandolin and choro, recording a Brazilian instrumental CD, “Memórias do Brasil,” and writing a mandolin book, “Retratos do Brasil.” He is one of the few innovators on the violin, an instrument rarely used in Brazilian popular music. He has performed with some of the biggest names of Brazilian instrumental music, including Hermeto Pascoal, Armandinho Macêdo and Hamilton de Holanda.
+
Pablo Fagundes, a Brazilian, fell in love with the blues, an American style that has many fans in Brazil. Today he works to incorporate his instrument, the harmonica, in Brazilian music, developing research and giving lessons in the Escola de Choro Raphael Rabello in Brasilia. He has performed often in Europe and the United States in the past few years. In 2012, he performed at the International Festival of Harmonicas in France and with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional de Brasilia. He performed the Concerton para Harmônica e Orquestra, by Heitor Villa Lobos. In Brazil, Pablo performs with Pé de Cerrado, a group dedicated to various styles of Brazilian regional music, as well as with the Quarteto Camará, a group that explores Brazilian music, jazz and blues. He has also played with the Brazilian All Stars Blues band, opening for B.B. King, and at the Mandolin Symposium in California, playing with David Grisman and Mike Marshall.

+
Joey is now based in Boston, so this is a rare chance to see him perform in his old Southern Cal stomping grounds. He has spent the last ten years touring North America, Europe, and Asia, teaching and performing music on the uilleann pipes. A Los Angeles native, he first received instruction on the pipes from Dubliner Pat D’Arcy, a founding member of the Southern California Uilleann Pipers Club. Joey’s musical skills have been honed by several visits to Ireland, a year-long stint working in Japan, and continuing relationships with master pipers.
+
In addition to performing solo, Joey tours with MICK MOLONEY and the group THE GREEN FIELDS OF AMERICA. While at home, he organizes the meetings of the Boston Pipers Club, teaches for Comhaltas’ Boston Music School, and organizes various traditional music concerts and events. His debut solo album is due out in October of this year.

The Guide has high regard for LAUREN ADAMS. Here are some excerpts from the Guide’s review in our News Features edition of July 27, 2012:
+
“Lauren’s song ‘Thirsty,’ title track to one of her albums, evokes lost country & western, from a time before Nashville lost the western part and turned it all into dysfunctional relationship, red-state-trailer-park rock.
+
“Lauren found a Michigander in the crowd to receive the dedication of her song, “Henry from Saginaw Michigan.” It’s a solid honkytonker that should have ’em dancin’ at the Cowboy Palace.
+
“… Be sure to catch LAUREN ADAMS when she performs in town, or at her monthly ‘Americana Song Circle’ showcase at Genghis Cohen.”

This outfit delivers a great show of music, comedy, pickin’, grinnin’ and folky nostagia. The mighty men of SLUGGER O’ TOOLE share their passion for the music of Ireland and the Celtic Nations by concocting a heady brew of foot-stomping pub songs, heart-rending ballads and deft instrumentals.
