Tuesday's Top Picks...

.
If you're up early, there's a fun show on TV this morning from 5 to 6 am. It's described at the bottom. First, here are tonight's top music picks.
.
At 8 pm, Hawai'ian slack key guitar master PATRICK LANDEZA plays a full evening at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena.
.
Meanwhile, THE DUNWELLS bring their folk-Americana and bluegrass for one set at 8 pm at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.
.
(RECEIVED LATE: Dave Morrison and his band head a monthly showcase at Viva Cantina in Burbank. No cover, but buy some food or drink (Mexican food, full bar).
.
.
EARLY MORNING TV: 5-6 am, "Daylight: Most Beautiful Train" chronicles the history of Southern Pacific's red-orange-silver-and-black streamlined passenger train, the "Daylight," which operated from 1937-1971. It ran between L.A. and San Francisco and completed the entire trip while the sun was still up - hence, the name. For the first 20 or so of those years, it ran substantially faster than Amtrak is allowed to run today, and it did it behind streamlined steam locomotives. This documentary was made in 2005. It is not a music performance show, but the storied and fabled train has been the subject of plenty of songs over many years. Broadcast on KCET, the independent public television station.
.
.
More on these shows, plus MUCH more on HUNDREDS of other live music performances and other music-related events and shows, from now 'til past doomsday, are in the latest full edition of the Guide, published August 10 and still available just below or in the sidebar at left, depending which edition you are reading.

  1. I may be the only one, but I saw that 5AM show on tv! Interesting timing. There is a group trying to make amtrak run a "Coast Daylight" again. Picked up their magazine off the free rack, by amtrak counter, in Union Station on my commute. Wish that will happen and really wish they would do it with a colorful steam engine again! I'm too young to have seen that train back in the day. Thanks for noting the tv show along with all the great music!
