+
The members of HAZEL MOUNTAIN have Southern California connections that go back to the early 1970s, where the band’s leader, WALDEN DAHL, was playing music with the original LOST HIGHWAY and band members STUART DUNCAN and ALISON BROWN. You could also find him performing around town with the HIGH WINDOW BOYS and GREY EAGLE. In this band, he does lead vocals and plays guitar and fiddle. JEFF HARVEY, who plays mandolin and adds harmony vocals, also grew up playing with Duncan and Brown and, later, became a founding member of the rebirth of LOST HIGHWAY in the mid ’90s. JOHN PLOTNIK plays banjo and Dobro and does harmony vocals. He has played with FOXFIRE and LIBERTY, and currently works for Disney’s California Adventure. DEAN KNIGHT is on bass, and contributes lead and harmony vocals, and also played with LIBERTY, as well with as SHERI LEE and CHRIS STUART & BACKCOUNTRY.
+
The sounds of HAZEL MOUNTAIN have been influenced not just by the great bluegrass music tradition, but also by the old country standards and western swing, cowboy songs and folk ballads, the island scene and the rock scene. Their play songs range from STEVEN FOSTER to BILL MONROE, from BOB DYLAN to THE BEATLES, GENE AUTRY to JOHN DENVER. If you enjoy variety and have an open musical mind, you’ll appreciate Hazel Mountain.
+
Okay to park free across the street at Pickwick Bowl. BASC presents bluegrass recording artists.
+
No cover, but venue is a restaurant renowned for its Mexican food, with a full bar (beer and margarita only $3 each at this series), so buy something.

Tue, Aug 21, a “FREE SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick, on TV:
9:30-11 pm “AIRPLAY AND THE RISE OF ROCK RADIO” recalls the early days with DJs and the musicians they made famous. Included are interview comments from Casey Kasem, Jerry Blavat, Murray the K, Cousin Bruce Morrow, and Wolfman Jack. Broadcast on KLCS, the only PBS station that presents music / music-related programs without butchering them for pledge drive begging. Replays tonight, 2:30-4 am, for those who are out late.
+
This is NOT the same show we listed in July. That one is “THE WAGES OF SPIN: PAYOLA,” a scathing and revealing documentary that chronicles the radio and TV payola scandal of the ’60s and how the Philadelphia music scene of the ’50s and ’60s gave rise to it. Includes the roll of “American Bandstand” and DICK CLARK, including his testimony before Congress. Those in today’s music business will find parallels, as well as plenty of background on why and how things are the way they are. When it returns, we will let you know.
