Summer did not end on Labor Day, and not just because it’s HOT. And nothing at all ended on the acoustic or Americana music scenes, as this new full edition of the Guide’s “SPOTLIGHT EVENTS” handily proves. (This edition makes 102 references to FESTIVALS, alone!)

7 pm BANSHEE IN THE KITCHEN plays Fiddler’s Crossing, 206 East F St (at Robinson St), Tehachapi 93561; www.grungehobbit.com; 661-823-9994.
+
The women of Kern County-based Celtic band BANSHEE IN THE KITCHEN, have, for nearly a decade, delighted audiences across the nation and overseas, and survived the departure of one of their three original members. Their music continues to be a splendid blend of traditional Celtic, seasoned with hints of jazz, Americana, and even acoustic rock played on traditional acoustic instruments and hammered dulcimer. A regular feature at the “Bakersfield Scottish Games,” they have played or headlined Celtic festivals and gatherings far and wide. Along with superb musicianship, these women bring a special "banshee" playfulness and fun to their traditional and original tunes and songs.
+
Until recently, Banshee was a trio, with BRENDA HUNTER, National Champion on hammered dulcimer, plus her prowess on fiddle; JILL EGLAND on accordion, flute, penny whistle, and bodhran; and KATHARINE EDMONSON on guitar, who took the place of original member MARY TULIN in the original lineup. The three women sing solo as well as rich three-part harmonies.
+
With the recent addition of bassist CHRIS MARTIN, the trio has become a quartet. Egland and Hunter live in Bakersfield, and Edmonson and Martin in Kernville.
+
The date of this concert, September 7, is “First Friday” in downtown Tehachapi, a charming mountain town. The venue usually has an open house along with other arts establishments instead of a ticketed concert. While this month is an exception, concert goers can still celebrate “First Friday” starting at 5 pm at the new Tehachapi Treasure Trove and other businesses, and then finish up with this rousing Celtic concert and dessert at Fiddlers Crossing. Plus, the paintings of ALLYSON GRAY will remain on the walls through September.
+
Tickets may be purchased next door at Mountain Music, at The Apple Shed (Apple Shed will add a 5% service charge to all tickets), or with a credit card at 661-823-9994. Concert tix are $15, and coffee and goodies are included. Doors at 6:30 pm for the best seats.

Fri, Sep 7, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
8 pm LAURIE LEWIS & THE RIGHT HANDS play a special Friday edition of the Caltech Folk Music Series, in in Beckman Institute Auditorium, 322 S Michigan Av, on the Caltech Campus, Pasadena; advance tix 626-395-4652, or toll-free 888-2CALTECH (1-888-222-5832); info, www.folkmusic.caltech.edu.
+
LAURIE LEWIS is a magnificent singer, songwriter, fiddler, and guitarist who has always surrounded herself with excellent musicians. This current ensemble of THE RIGHT HANDS is no exception, as it includes longtime sidekick TOM ROZUM on mandolin, vocals, and guitar; the San Gabriel Valley's own string wizard, PATRICK SAUBER, on banjo, vocals, and perhaps mandolin and guitar; CHAD MANNING on fiddle and vocals; and ANDREW CONKLIN on bass and vocals. They have been playing together for five years, and they are quite extraordinary.
+
Laurie will be co-hosting the “INTERNATIONAL BLUEGRASS MUSIC AWARDS” with DEL McCOURY in Nashville, later in September - see http://ibma.org/node/410.
+
The Caltech Folk bookers, Nick Smith and Rex Meyreis, tell us, “When we think about the level of her music and her achievements, we are quite honored that she is coming back for another appearance at our little series. Her newest CD, ‘Skippin' and Flyin',’ is a tribute to the great BILL MONROE, but more than including covers of Monroe's fine work, it features some great new Laurie Lewis originals that are written and performed in Monroe's spirit.”
+
Read some of the fine reviews of this recording at www.laurielewis.com/2011website/2011reviews.htm#. Click on the “Skippin' and Flyin'” picture.
+
Rex & Nick continue, “A lot of folks have had very positive and insightful responses to this recording and Laurie's past work. We offer a few more YouTube examples of the fine songs from Laurie's repertoire. ‘Val's Cabin’ - www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAX_oJAbtqQ - performed here by Laurie, Tom, MARK GRAHAM and PATRICK SAUBER's dad, TOM SAUBER, is a fine example of Laurie's intimate vocals and great ability of expression in her lyrics. ‘Texas Bluebonnets’ - www.youtube.com/v/-1K5DOwx3mw&hl=en&fs=1 - is an old gem that displays Laurie's & Tom's great harmony singing, not to mention her fine fiddling and Tom's amazing mandolin. ‘Who Will Watch the Home Place’ - www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDaEjoD0cqM - was written by KATE LONG, but has become a signature song for Laurie, and once again, it displays amazing vocal abilities. This is a different line-up from the Caltech show, but we heard the Right Hands do the song 2 years ago, and their version is equally moving. Hear a very different version of the same song with just Laurie and Tom at www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWen3qsXnnM - that one has Laurie on guitar (no fiddle!) and Tom's amazing mandolin out front and beautiful. \Great musicians are very versatile!”
+
Laurie's web site is http://laurielewis.com and the series is http://folkmusic.caltech.edu.
+
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Call 626-395-4652 to order tickets. This may sell-out, so advance purchase is advised. Park free in either of he two lots at the end of Michigan Av, south off Del Mar, and ignore the reserved space signs – that is not in effect in the evening.

It tells the fictional tale of a famous 1930s singing (well, whistling) movie cowboy a la GENE AUTRY or ROY ROGERS. Except in the character’s “real” life, he’s more like JOHN CLEESE – a British actor far more comfortable in London’s West End than in the Old West. Together with “Steeves,” his gentleman’s gentleman, Rex travels to the town of Lizard Spit to perform at the Bombay Corral. Before the dust can settle on his immaculate rhinestones, a claim has been stolen, a prospector murdered, and Rex is framed for all of it.

Sun, Sep 9, at the L.A. County Fair:
7:30 pm RAMON AYALA y SUS BRAVOS DEL NORTE plays the L.A. County Fair “Grandstand Concerts” series at the L.A. County Fairgrounds – Fairplex – in Pomona; www.fairplex.com. Some free tix are distributed at 3 pm on concert day; otherwise, tix range from $19.50 to $100, plus the always high processing charges at www.ticketmaster.com. Or buy at the fair and save the extra fees.
+
The world’s largest county Fair runs the month of September. The Guide is listing only a few of the Fair’s concerts. While there is plenty to do and see, there is, unfortunately, profoundly less folk-americana and acoustic music than in past years. There is a smattering of music and dance in the traditions of Mexico, and there is some jazz, chiefly Latin jazz. And there are dozens of performances of one kind or another – children’s shows, magic shows, radio-Disney-derived-annoyances, etc. – on multiple stages, but unlike recent years, these stages won’t feature acoustic or Americana music. Though major national trends are moving away from sh-thump-thud / revolving door rehab / pop tart du jour / American Karaoke crap, musically, you’ll be dodging the sonic infestations and knots of head-bobbers at this year’s fair. It’s still worth going, but with a few exceptions, not for the music.
+
A MUST-SEE at the fair is “GENIUS: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN INNOVATION” in Building 8. It’s an exhibition worthy of any major museum, with full-size WRIGHT BROTHERS aeroplanes, all of STEVE JOBS patents, an exhibit on HENRY FORD and the the development of automobile manufacturing, a tribute to GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER, and the best BENJAMIN FRANKLIN reenactor portraying the archetype American genius. You simply must spend time conversing with Ben, and you’ll find that the highlight of the fair.
+
Fair admission is $17 adults, and does not include concert admission, unless you can capture those free tix distributed at 3 pm for that evening’s concert (each person who wants one of those tix must be present to receive it). Parking is another $14, but you can find free street parking north of the fairgrounds, if you don’t mind a walk in to reach the parking lot tram.

Tuesday September 11
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
. .
If you are very young, ask someone about the significance of September 11th.
+
If you are very old, share with others how hearing the words “December 7th” and “September 11th” produce similar and unique memories of horror and feelings of resolve and compassion for those struck down, and for their families who were suddenly left without them.
+
In 2001, the century and the millennia were both brand-new, and all the hopes and dreams of the future were supposed to be here, being fulfilled, bringing a Star Trek future for all of us, one that transcended the ugliness of the past, a time when we could symbolically cast off the primal and brutal traits that had characterized so much of human history. We had learned to care about our fragile planet. We had learned to overcome prejudices and bigotry. But, instead of being spacefarers, we find ourselves living in a 21st century present that is nothing like the future we once imagined. We are mired in debt, stuck in Afghanistan, and hearing politicians call for more spending for the military, more intervention in more foreign lands, more costly foreign wars that we are supposed to accept as necessary and otherwise ignore.
+
Instead of living in the 21st century we dreamed of, we live with the legacy of September 11th, with the most primitive compulsions of humanity, the still painful wounds. We still feel the legacy of the most diabolical and conniving and cynical and murderous impulses, and with that single day that changed everything and brought those things to the center of the world’s stage. Instead of going to the stars – or at least to the planets – all our money was wasted, one more time. Despite lessons we could have learned any number of times before when our precious resources disappeared into the bottomless abyss of war, here we are. And even more families will never see their loved ones come home.
+
During the Bush administration, September 11th was proclaimed the annual “Patriots Day.” It is marked that way on all the printed-in-China calendars that hang on our walls. That proclamation somehow seems and feels a gross oversimplification, almost to the point of being a dismissal of all the emotions and thoughts and memories and resolve, of all the empty chairs at the dinner tables, of all the lost possibilities and deferred dreams, of all the squandered opportunities that still accompany the anniversary of this date from 2001.
+
“How many times will the cannonballs fly, until they are forever banned? The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind, the answer is blowin’ in the wind.” – Bob Dylan.

Freebo will be making his second appearance at Fiddlers Crossing. He and his wife Laurie now make their home in California Hot Springs, in the foothills of the Southern Sierras. He also leads a songwriting workshop on occasion in Bakersfield, so he is no stranger to Kern County.
+
To folk, rock and blues musicians, Freebo is an icon. During his career as an in-demand bassist for stage and studio, he’s appeared on “Saturday Night Live,” “Midnight Special,” “Muppets Tonight,” and in concert with SPINAL TAP.
+
During most of that time, Freebo didn't really think about songwriting. In an interview with ROZ LARMAN on radio’s "Folkscene," Freebo talked about his gradual "metamorphosis" into a singer-songwriter, backing himself up with guitar. "I never had any aspirations to be a songwriter," he told her. "But as I played with more and more people, I realized I had a lot of musical ideas, and as a bass player, I really couldn't get them into the music. I finally realized that if I wanted to get these ideas out, the song was the place to do that." Freebo said he was fortunate to have spent so much time around great songwriters while touring as a duo with BONNIE RAITT.
+
This yearning for more creative expression drove Freebo to begin a process of "deep inner discovery" and make the conscious decision to tackle the challenges of songwriting in middle age, at the height of his career. Now, more than 20 years later, he says that this creative process has taken him to "a much higher level as a human being."
+
Perhaps it's because he came to songwriting later in life that most of Freebo's lyrics have a deep spiritual resonance. He sings about such things as the "inner angel" that guides him, about the end of a life well lived deserving "a standing ovation," as well as social issues, including homelessness.
+
Some of Freebo's songs have brought awards, including a Posi Award for "Best Song" in The Most Uniting Category, and the Los Angeles Music Award for "Best Folk Artist" in 2007. He has also won, and been a finalist in, several songwriting contests. He has just released his fourth CD, called "Something to Believe," with songs that show his musical range from blues and rock to folk and country.
+
Another clue to Freebo's sensitivity to the deeper needs of humanity might be inferred from his childhood in a small coal mining town near Philadelphia. When he grew-up there, it had a population of 50,000. Today, he said, it's down to around 5,000. "There is not a lot of industry now," he said. "It's all been shipped to China."
+
Freebo played piano and ukulele as a child, and tuba in the high school band. In college he picked up the guitar. His clear, resonant voice was a welcome addition to the bass section of both high school and college glee clubs. After college, he joined a local rock band that needed a bass player, and it proved a natural instrument for him. In 1967, he acquired the name "Freebo," and his birth name is now his well-kept secret.

Sat, Sep 15, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick:
2 pm “WOODY GUTHRIE’S MUSIC & LEGACY” with ROSS ALTMAN and PETER DREIER, presented today as half of a two-part celebration of the life, music, and legacy of folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), at the Allendale Branch Library, 1130 S Marengo Av, Pasadena 91106; www.pasadenapubliclibrary.net; 626-744-7260.
+
ROSS ALTMAN, folk singer, guitarist, and political activist, performs a selection of Woody Guthrie’s songs. Those songs of social protest drew upon the Dust Bowl culture, gave voice to the disenfranchised, and, as the show’s producers say, “are as relevant today as when they were written some 70 years ago.”
+
PETER DREIER, professor and chair of the Urban & Environmental Policy Department at Occidental College, will discuss how Guthrie’s experiences in Southern California during the Depression inspired his radical views about social and political conditions. Dreier will also sign copies of his recently published book, “The 100 Greatest Americans of the 20th Century: A Social Justice Hall of Fame.” The book includes Woody Guthrie among the 100 artists, activists, thinkers, organizers, writers, and politicians profiled.
+
This commemoration is one of two related programs at this library branch, the first on Sat, Sep 15 and the second on Sep 29, that come during the 100th anniversary year of Guthrie’s birth. See both listings for content of each program. Free program.

7:30 pm “MARIACHI USA FIESTA” with MARIACHI USA ALL STARZ, and MARIACHI USA BALLET FOLKLORICO, at the L.A. County Fair “Grandstand Concerts” series in a 90-minute condensation of the annual Hollywood Bowl event that concludes with a fireworks show, at the L.A. County Fairgrounds – Fairplex – in Pomona; www.fairplex.com. Some free tix are distributed at 3 pm on concert day; otherwise, tix range from $19.50 to $75, plus the always high processing charges at www.ticketmaster.com.

+
This is a delightful festival in beautiful surroundings. The folks at the Inyo Arts Council are outdoing themselves with this year’s lineup. Musical genius JOE CRAVEN emcees and sits-in with some of the featured acts. The campground jam scene is good, too. The Guide highly recommends you spend the money on the gas, and go. If you have the days available, go a few days early or stay after the festival and enjoy a hike or backpacking trip or some trout fishing in the High Sierra, or a hot spring soak in one of the nearby ponds.

And then send a message to the boneheads who run all the big record labels to tell them you don’t give a rat’s behind for the sh-thump-thud / revolving-door-rehab / pop-tart-du-jour stuff they peddle, but the LARGEST music event in the country books people you will travel to see and whose recordings you DO buy.

The festival’s website, www.strictlybluegrass.com, lets you play a “listen and identify” guessing game of who’s performing this year, and it reveals more artists and bands continually.
