The WEEKEND’s “We-Survived-the-Election” edition: MUSIC, LIVE and on TV…

.
Late breaking news...
Annual "PUT THE FORK IN HUNGER FOOD DRIVE," supported by artists and plenty of others, is Sunday, Nov 11, 8 am to 4 pm, at "Fork Plaza."
+
That's the home of the world-famous "Fork-in-the-Road" sculpture. Drop off canned or packaged food that does not require refrigeration. Volunteers will meet you at curbside.
+
It's at 200 Bellfontaine, Pasadena 91105, at the top of the triangular park where Pasadena Av and St. John's Place divide at, you guessed it, the fork in the road.
+
If you haven't seen the gigantic piece of tableware -- the fork -- you must go. Parking is convenient and free to allow photo ops as you embrace the giant fork and get that picture for your special holiday card to send your Back-East relatives.
+
Just take food for those in need. Last year set an all-time record with FIVE TONS of food collected. The need remains strong, so organizers pledge a higher total this year.
+
Which means donate on Sunday, just in time for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, et. al..

.
Another late addition...
.
Sun, Nov 11, in Ventura:
7 pm SALTY SUITES, plus opening act PI JACOBS, at Zoey's Cafe in Ventura. SALTY SUITES is a fabulous young band with CHELSEA WILLIAMS, who stars in the Chevy commercial (singing on the road and in the shower), and mandolin wunderkind / multi-instrumentalist SCOTT GATES. Venue has tasty food, full bar, free parking.

.
Here's the full edition of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide, as originally published...
.
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
.
Here ya go, with a NEWS item and invitation for your participation, and, the link for:
a) the ACOUSTIC and AMERICANA MUSIC SCENE, live and on TV this weekend,
PLUS,
b) an added section with all the MUSIC on TV from Monday through November 19!
.
Perusing all those TV listings and setting your recording devices should keep you busy…
.
NEWS in a moment.
.
But first…
GOOD THING there’s so much music, because, well, we’re still here, despite plans to be elsewhere. Our loss is your gain (we hope; somebody needs to benefit). Our planned hiatus was delayed by storms in the High Sierra.
.
Now, as Stephen Colbert would say, “Back to what about me.” If the High Sierra is now buried in snow for the winter, your editor will endure yet another year without a much-needed escape to bask in the high alpine realm (or anywhere else, for that matter).

So, being that we’re here, we ’spect there’s more coming in the Guide soon, reaching farther into the future. Certainly, THAT will include an updated long-range catalog of events to keep this useful for you for a loooong time, no matter how long we’re gone. If we get to go. At all. We do want to keep you happy and tune-filled, whether we are stuck here or reveling in the freedom of being where we would rather be. But HEY, wherever any of us finds him-or-her-self, a spoonful of music makes the medicine go down in a most delightful way…
. .
. .

. .
Now, that NEWS ITEM and INVITATION to take part…
.
The 31st Annual “LOS ANGELES HOLIDAY CAROLING FESTIVITIES” include many music luminaries, and invite YOU to take part, Sunday, December 2, 2012. Activities are very structured and scheduled at five senior care centers with performances from 4 to 7:30 pm.
It’s a “modular schedule” that allows you to “arrive / depart at your discretion.” All venues are located in the West San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, and this event is part of “a nationwide initiative to promote the overall theme of brining happiness and / or enlightenment to the elderly, care-givers, and participants during the holiday season,” says series fouinder VINCENT LEINEN.
+
Immediately following the caroling, participants are invited to socialize and dine at HomeTown Buffet Restaurant in Canoga Park, from 7:30-9:30 pm.
+
Vincent says, “The holiday season can be a very challenging time for our friends in senior care centers. Statistics show that, while for many people it’s the most enjoyable time of year, this can be the opposite for seniors residing in care centers because they long to be at their own home and suffer from blues, depression, and even commit suicide. The music, love, compassion, and energy provided by the participants can provide our senior friends much needed mental and spiritual healing power and growth to address this situation.”
+

+
"Free parking available just across Glendale Bl, after the 2 pm closing of the Bank of America in their two adjoining lots. Over 50 spaces, there," says the library.
+
The Silverlake Public Library hosts an afternoon of music and conversation devoted to the Ash Grove, the Los Angeles club that acted as a venue for the music and politics that shaped the 1960s counterculture. Come hear several of the figures that helped create the club’s path-breaking blend of music and politics share their experiences and memories.
+
Presenters include:
* ED PEARL, founder and operator of the Ash Grove;
* BERNIE PEARL, legendary L.A. blues musician and co-founder of the "Ash Grove School of Traditional Music";
* GORDY ALEXANDRE, the club's longtime manager and eyewitness to the violence directed at the club because of its role in encouraging the radical politics of that era.
+
ED PEARL says, "This event is designed to introduce the public to an ongoing oral history project focused on recovering the vibrant world that the Ash Grove was a part of, and which the club helped bring into existence."
+
He continues, "The project has collected interviews not only with musicians and those who helped run the Ash Grove, but also from those who attended the club and were deeply moved by the experience. While its most pivotal years saw the club become a center for the 1960s counterculture in Los Angeles, this club continues to live and inspire people whose social, musical and political sensibilities were formed in part within its walls."
+
The interviews will be collected along with the rest of the Ash Grove archive at the Ethnomusicology Library at UCLA,though the work is far from over. If you have a memory of the club, please consider attending this event, and also adding your memories to the project.
+
The event is free and open to all. Come hear about this moment in Los Angeles history, and your memories as well. There will be time for questions and comments after the presentation.

BANSHEE IN THE KITCHEN are the acclaimed Celtic touring and recording artists who have been casting their musical spell on audiences since 2002. They serve-up traditional Irish and Scottish music with equal measures of eclectic skill and merry abandon. These thoroughly modern ladies practice the ancient art of musical alchemy, seeking out traditional Celtic tunes, finding the sweet spot between old and new, stirring it all up with their trademark playfulness, soaring harmonies and an occasional dash of eye of newt, in a musical and magical process they call “banshee-ification.”
+
They've played festivals, theatres, living rooms, and countless other venues from New York to Los Angeles and as far as Japan, and now, says the venue, “they're bringing the big show to Palmdale, and offering up not one, but two sets, guaranteed to bewitch, bother and bewilder you.”

+
It's a musical stage-show tribute to the generation whose music captured the heart of World War II America. There may have been food rationing, but there was no limit to the musical talent of the late 1930s and early 40s. One of the most defining events in American history, World War II gave birth to many popular artists and songs. Morale-boosting sounds -- on the home front and “over there” -- were one of the Allies' most potent weapons.
+
It's a swingin’ good time with the vibrant and poignant works of Glenn Miller, Louis Prima, The Andrews Sisters, Kay Kyser, Benny Goodman, Kitty Kallen, Harry James and many more.

Sat, Nov 10, a “SHOW-of-the-WEEK” pick, in Pasadena:
8 pm Stellar singer-songwriter KRISTINA OLSEN plays the “CALTECH FOLK MUSIC SOCIETY” series in Beckman Institute Auditorium (“Little Beckman”) on the Caltech campus in Pasadena. Park free in either of two lots at the end of Michigan Av, S off Del Mar. Info, 626-395-4652.
+
The series producers tell us:
“Kristina Olsen is just back in the USA (for a short time), making her way west to California, and the Caltech Folk Music Society is very pleased to present her in nine days on Saturday, November 10 at 8:00 PM in Beckman Institute Auditorium (Little Beckman). A regular performer in the earlier days of our series (she played here 4 times before 1995), she has found fame and success in touring Europe and beyond, and has become very popular in Australia, where she spends most of her time now. Hearing her in Southern California is a very rare treat these days, and we hope you will make it a point to attend this show and hear this wonderful singer. She is so very talented, in so many ways, that it is hard to know where to start in describing her. There is her voice, her original songs, her humor, her musicianship and her view of life. Kristina has a wonderful, expressive voice, which was described as being "as powerful as it is delicate, forceful as it is tender, and she asks a lot of herself" ( Patrick Shepherd, The Press, Christchurch, New Zealand).
+
“Just listen to her song, ‘Truth of a Woman,’ at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvWKHr5Zv4o for an example. She is also very funny, inquisitive, and engaged with life, and we see this in her natural stage manner and in her tremendously varied original songs, which cover a wide range of experiences and emotions.
+
“She is equally comfortable doing a sassy, bluesy song with slide guitar, such as ‘Something Tells Me,’ as with a beautiful love song, such as ‘Hurry on Home,’ at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riMfaJ9NdzA. She also plays concertina, as on ‘If I Stayed,’ at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It7s3WdBBWM.”
+
Roots and Reel described her as follows:
“To begin with the songs, they are those wonderful gems of song writing which don't rely on any particular genre for their beginnings. Olsen builds melodies, not styles. She can wind them into unpredictable combinations which then become lovely melodies or she can deliver them in straight lines which become jazz- or blues-oriented pieces. Her guitar stylings are wide, ranging from delicate, complicated runs to aggressive direct blues runs. She's a sharp guitarist, able to provide herself with both the rhythm and lead pieces she needs to give her songs solid solo support. As a storyteller, Olsen is similarly wonderful, mixing earthy observations about herself and those around with the occasional comment about society's various shortcomings. Most of all, though, Olsen is funny, noting those things which innocently point out where she and all of us provide material for comic relief. She's talented, funny, and observant, and consequently she becomes the witty friend who shares her life with you, not preaching to you or insisting on our praise to maintain the friendship.”
+
John Shand, of the Sydney Morning Herald wrote, “Olsen, an itinerant troubadour who regularly graces Australian folk festivals, was at her most engaging. Such was the candour of her songs and chatty tales that it would impossible for anyone with blood in their veins not to empathise with her. Her full-throated voice and crisp guitar served up such diverse subject matter as crop-dusting and prostitution, while a revealing yarn about life-drawing classes introduced The Truth of a Woman. From her new CD came In Your Darkened Room, the title track to an album containing some of her finest work, a black frost edging her usual warmth and humour.”

Kristina's web site is www.kristinaolsen.net and the series site is http://folkmusic.caltech.edu/. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Tickets at the door.

Sunday, November 11
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
. .
HAPPY VETERANS DAY. We, together with the entire nation, take just one day to year to honor our veterans, who have often given the best years of their lives in service to our nation. The day -- November 11 -- derives from Armistice Day that ended World War I. Alas, the final veterans of that war are now all gone, and the "war to end all wars" that they fought did not then and still has not now, brought that hope to reality. But despite the lunacy of war, we honor those who have stepped forward to protect us and assure our freedoms -- including the freedom to oppose war.

TOM RENAUD is a contemporary folk singer and guitarist, playing music that uplifts spirits. He was a monk for 25 years, living in Colorado, Nova Scotia, and Ireland. All the while he worked on the guitar and wrote songs. In 2005 Tom left the monastery and now teaches -- but music continues to be his favorite work. He has recorded with folk duo Evans & Doherty, receiving national airplay in Canada, and was a finalist in the 2007 Great American Song Contest for "Ripened Fields of Corn." With his songs, presence, and personality the audience is engaged by a sense of open-heartedness, woven through with poetic stories. Tom's guitar playing never fails to impress. His CD "Walk Till Morning," is a collection of original songs written over the last 20 years. More at www.tomrenaud.com.

Series hostess and producer DANA CHARNOFSKY says, “It’s a FOOD DRIVE event. Please bring along at least one unopened can, box, sealed pouch, or jar of food to donate. These should all be new, in good shape, and not need refrigeration. Preferably themed for the season -- canned corn or spinach, jars of cranberry sauce, canned salmon, boxes of add-water potatoes, rice, and so on. Most importantly, just bring something, and our gracious venue, the Church in Ocean Park, will see that the food is all donated where it will do the most good! You KNOW you're gonna stuff yourself in a couple weeks, so this is a way to feel good that you've helped those who otherwise might not have had such a good holiday.”
