Thu, Nov 1, a "SHOW-of-the-WEEK" pick, in Altadena:
8 pm THE SHOW PONIES plus THE WILD REEDS play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
THE SHOW PONIES are a 5 piece indie folk band with old time country influences. When the Guide's editor heard their set at the "BIGHORN MOUNTAIN MUSIC FESTIVAL," he immediately acted to get them in contact with CGB impresario BOB STANE.
+
The band features award winning male and female vocalists, in the persons of Clayton Chaney and Andi Schrock. They are backed by Phillip Glenn on the fiddle, Jason Harris on the guitar and banjo, and Kevin Brown on the drums. When you see The Show Ponies be prepared to clap your hands, stomp your feet and sing along. The Show Ponies strike a balance between old and new, joy and sorrow, rough and tender.
+
This young band started in 2011. Schrock, a native Texan, and Chaney, who was born in Texas and raised in Arkansas, met in L.A. after heading to Los Angeles at different times for unrelated reasons. They eventually found themselves singig, writing, and performing together.
+
Jason Harris, fellow musician and Texan, jumped at the opportunity to produce The Show Ponies’ debut album, "Here We Are!” bringing his extensive training in music composition to the project. Shortly after recording the album, Harris officially joined the group as their guitarist and banjo player. Philip Glenn signed-on after recording fiddle tracks with the band.
+
Glenn is considered by many to be one of the top young fiddle players in the country; before joining the other members in the studio, Glenn attended the Mark O’Conner Fiddle Camp where he was awarded the "Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin."
+
Kevin Brown soon became the fifth Pony, lending his drumming expertise while earning his masters degree in percussion performance from CSU Long Beach. Very rarely do five young people with such exceptional talent join together to create such a cohesive sound. The Show Ponies have played up and down the west coast to support their debut album “Here We Are!” released in April 2012. They are ramping up momentum to tour the country and record their next album.
+
Plus,
THE WILD REEDS, a three-piece female harmony driven group. Influences ranging from folk and bluegrass to jazz, this Los Angeles-based trio in the vein of The Wailin' Jennys, including vibrant, tight harmonies singing old time 1930's-esque tunes, upbeat bluegrass songs, and raw songs about life and truth. Beneath the hair and the torn tights lie folk-rock melodies and jazzy overtones. Since December 2009,The Wild Reeds have shared a common purpose, to work hard and develop good, honest music that reflects the deepest caverns of their hearts. The Wild Reeds are Natalie Nicoles, Sharon Silva, and Kinsey Lee. The three young women rotate around the stage exchanging roles and tossing around a variety of instruments such as guitar, harmonium, banjo, auto harp, and mandolin, while wooing their audiences with their acclaimed three-part harmonies.
