+
The legendary Celtic / world band returns to the venue after a two-year hiatus. Their take on traditional Irish and Scottish music is about as no-holds-barred as they come, a two-fisted, high-flying musical brouhaha that tosses in elements of folk, rock, jazz and classical, while never quite turning their backs on their roots.
+
Plus, it's a Christmas show, so, the venue tells us, “expect a few bells to be jingled and a few halls to be decked!”
+
No cover, just buy something to eat and drink.

Fri, Dec 14, in L.A.:
Time tbd “JUDITH OWEN & HARRY SHEARER’S HOLIDAY SING-ALONG TOUR” is a benefit for New Orleans musicians, and has one stop in L.A., tonight at Largo at the Coronet, 366 N La Cienega Bl, L.A. 90048; http://largo-la.com; 310-855-0350.
+
Shearer, star of “The Simpsons” and “This Is Spinal Tap” has again teamed up with his acclaimed his singer-songwriter spouse Judith Owen for an evening of music, mirth and special guests, bringing seasonal cheer and playful irreverence. Acting as the perfect hosts, Owen and Shearer both sing and play (piano and bass, respectively) and welcome an array of superbly talented guests to join in the festive fun.
+
Judith Owen & Harry Shearer’s Holiday Sing-Along is an evening of music and mirth for Christmas lovers and Scrooges of all ages. At last year’s performance, one audience member was overheard gushing, “When my girlfriend told me we were going to a Xmas sing-a-long, I told her I'd rather stab my own eyes out. But now I'm going every year. It’s that much fun.”
+
The sing along, with its impressive array of special guests, has become a perennial touring phenomenon in major U.S. cities. Past favorite drop-ins for the evening of music mirth include a who’s-who of talented guests including Jane Lynch, Richard Thompson, Julia Fordham, Jill Sobule, Christopher Guest, Jon Cleary, and “Weird Al” Yankovic.
+
Multi-talented Harry Shearer is a comic personality who takes “hyphenate” to new levels —actor, author, director, satirist, musician, radio host, playwright and multi-media artist. He currently stars as former President, Richard M. Nixon, in Sky Arts TV comedy-drama, “Nixon’s the One.”
+
The multi-Grammy nominated Shearer’s latest CD release, Can’t Take a Hint, features Owen along with world-class collaborators Dr. John, Jamie Cullum, Glee’s Jane Lynch, and Fountains of Wayne. The album has been favorably received by Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times and Billboard, among many other outlets. American Songwriter magazine noted, “this is an album where you actually have to pay attention to the lyrics.”
+
Shearer reaches the homes of millions weekly via “Le Show,” his popular public-radio hour of satire and music now in its third decade. He’s played prominent roles in a broad range of films from The Right Stuff to This Is Spinal Tap, which he co-wrote, to the most recent For Your Consideration. Shearer directed The Big Uneasy, a film about the real cause of the 2005 New Orleans flood, and his first novel, Not Enough Indians, was on the Los Angeles Times’ Best Seller list.
+
Owen is best known to U.K./U.S. audiences as the exquisite voice of Richard Thompson’s CD and live show “1000 Years of Popular Music” and “Cabaret of Souls.” Jamie Cullum calls her “a female Randy Newman” and The New York Times states that she has “the kind of wailing folk-jazz voice that slices away surfaces to touch the vulnerable emotional nerve endings and leave you quivering.”
+
Her live performances are distinguished by brimming humor and theatrics. Owen’s most recent release, her eighth to date, is the beautifully vulnerable Some Kind of Comfort, an introspective collection of soulfully sophisticated pop. And her Christmas in July CD is filled with unabashed holiday gems, with a fresh twist.
+
Proceeds from this show benefit the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation www.nomaf.org.
+
The mission of the NEW ORLEANS MUSICIANS ASSISTANCE FOUNDATION is to keep music alive by sustaining New Orleans musicians and “tradition-bearers” in body, mind and spirit. The group’s assistance includes access to health and social services through the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic, regardless of a musicians’ ability to pay, and by fostering cultural opportunities that advocate for and support this effort.

Fri, Dec 14, in Altadena:
8 pm THE SCARLET FURIES and RANCHERS FOR PEACE share the night at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“The venue named by the Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
THE SCARLET FURIES bring “the rootsy romance of American Southern gothic angels and demons, wrapped in a veil of rich harmonies and anything with strings.” This 5-piece folk outfit melds complex acoustic layers with unshakable melodies and vocal arrangements behind stunning powerhouse songstress RALEIGH HOLMES.
+
They are vets of lots of shows and festivals in the past year, performing with big names including LEON RUSSELL, THE SUBDUDES, JOHN WAITE, and KENNY LOGGINS. Their own new CD, "Dark Clad Company," was produced by Rusty Anderson of Paul McCartney's band and mastered by Gavin Lurssen (triple Grammy winner with T Bone Burnette). And their new soundtrack for the hit game “Gray Matter” was recently released.
+
"There is a gentleness and quiet beauty to The Scarlet Furies recent release, ‘Dark Clad Company’. Raleigh Holmes vocals whisper promises (“All or Nothing”) and say goodbye (“Gone Tomorrow”) with a sweetness that leave a smile and a glass half full memory. Lyrics and story lines, like on “Young Goodman Brown”, lend an age to the songs. The dust of time works well with the instrumentation and The Scarlet Furies natural ability to add freshness. They reincarnate tradition and the resulting sound never shows age. They take a modern classic track by Nirvana (“Heart Shaped Box”) and replace the grunge of Seattle with forest freshness more in line with the folk side of Americana. "— The Alternative Root.
+
RANCHERS FOR PEACE are CHARLES & RAY DUNCAN, a father-daughter duo from the Central Coast of California with a fresh take on acoustic folk-rock they've termed “neo-hippie protest music.” Thoughtful songwriting, heartfelt harmonies, and jangly guitar/harmonica unite in a re-birth of that change-the-world attitude you might have heard blowing in the wind during the Summer of Love.
+
Ranchers For Peace are not actually involved in the livestock business, and manage no acreage other than whatever square footage of stage they happen to occupy at any given time. They say that for them, “It's more than a metaphor: it’s a conceptual reference point, like north or east, toward which we can steer. Because peace, like happiness, can never be directly invoked, but seems to arise only as a by-product of other favorable conditions.”

In early 2005, Lance reunited with BUDDY MILES to form a side project unofficially dubbed BAND OF TROUBLE, with ex-JOHNNY WINTER / STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN / ARC ANGELS bassist TOMMY SHANNON. This unit combined members of Hendrix's BAND OF GYPSYS with Stevie Ray Vaughan's DOUBLE TROUBLE to equal the ultimate foundation for Lance's guitar work. They shared the stage on concerts with artist such as Rick Derringer, Joe Bonamassa, Chris Duarte, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Lance's most recent studio album is a called Higher Ground where he tips his hat to Stevie Wonder taking that whole trip to Higher Ground paying tribute to one of his life-long idols.
