Fri, Jan 4, in Agoura; special film screening:
7 pm Screening of "THE WRECKING CREW" with Q&A following, at the Canyon Club, 28912 Roadside Dr, Agoura 91301.
+
THE WRECKING CREW were the studio musicians behind some of the biggest hits in the 1960s and '70s. From "Be My Baby" to "California Girls;" "Strangers in the Night" to "Mrs. Robinson," "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'" to "Up, Up and Away;" and from "Viva Las Vegas" to "Mr. Tambourine Man," the group dubbed The Wrecking Crew played on all of them. Six years in a row in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Grammy for "Record of the Year" went to Wrecking Crew member recordings.
+
"THE WRECKING CREW," a documentary film produced and directed by DENNY TEDESCO, son of legendary late Wrecking Crew guitarist TOMMY TEDESCO, has played around the world in the festival circuit with over a dozen awards and rave reviews and other accolades.
+
The film includes wonderful interviews with BRIAN WILSON, CHER, NANCY SINATRA, HERB ALPERT, GLEN CAMPBELL, ROGER McGUINN, GARY LEWIS, DICK CLARK, AL JARDINE, PETER TORK, and MICKY DOLENZ, as well as many of the Crew members themselves.
+
A labor of love by director Tedesco, the film is ultimately a love letter to the legacy of his late father and musician friends in the Crew. Documenting the work of musicians on such iconic songs, however, can be both cost-prohibitive and -- the biggest barrier -- distribution-prohibitive. According to the American Federation of Musicians, the film may have one of the largest soundtracks of any film in history, with 131 music cues. With songs by FRANK SINATRA, NANCY SINATRA, THE MONKEES, THE BYRDS, THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS, SONNY & CHER, THE BEACH BOYS, and dozens of others, the cost of licensing the music for the film is estimated at more than $300,000.
+
With the help of social media and donations, the film has made great progress raising the necessary money to pay the industry extortion racket and allow the release to become closer to reality, while other films of this nature never make it to the public.
+
Thus, every screening is “a special screening” and a fund-raiser to bring "The Wrecking Crew" nearer to a real release date.
+
Doors at 6 pm; Q&A after the film with the director, DENNY TEDESCO, and special guests, drummer HAL BLAINE and pianist DON RANDI. Plus, BOOGIE KNIGHTS perform after the Q&A. Ticket purchases / dinner reservations are required for decent seats. Seating priority for "Adult with Reservation" ticket holders is determined by date and time of purchase. Priority seating reservations are held until 7 pm the night of the event.

Got Progressive talk radio? Not so much. San Diegans have become accustomed to the conservative stylings of locally-owned 760 KFMB and the not-so-locally owned KOGO 600. When you’re looking for news in that city, there are no other choices. You’re stuck with sensationalist, and sometimes maniacal ramblings of Rush Limbaugh and Roger Hedgecock. But for a brief while, San Diego did have a progressive talk radio station to call its own: 1360 KLSD. “Save KLSD: The Film” is a documentary about how corporate influence corrupts government regulation, limits the free flow of information, and adversely effects American democracy. Over the course of four and a half years, the producers attended media reform conferences, conducted research, and filmed interviews and presentations by leading media reform experts and commentators, including Amy Goodman, Bill Moyers, Robert Reich, Van Jones, Phil Donahue, and Ed Schultz. The film is narrated by Bree Walker and Jon Elliott. It is produced by Jennifer Douglas and Jon Monday, and directed by Jon Monday.
+
A discussion follows the film, exploring grassroots efforts -- including attendance at FCC hearings where Progressive stations have their licenses up for renewal and what can be done to keep other stations from abandoning their progressive format. One of the narrators (and occasional TPA Film Night attendee), BREE WALKER, has been invited to lead the discussion.
+
There will be a cheese / veggie potluck (no alcohol) at 7:45 pm, with the film screening at 8 pm. A discussion follows the screening.
+
$10 donation is requested; no one turned away for lack of funds. The location is ADA compliant and headsets are available for those that need some extra volume.

+
The term "Penny University" comes from the 18th Century name given to the Coffee houses of London where, for a penny, you could sip coffee and listen to the news of the day. The band from Palm Desert, California intentionally misspells their name for strategic reasons. Formed in 2010 as an original trio led by endorsed Guitarist Michael Anthony Gagliardi, Craig Brown - drums and Ted Walker on bass. Then added percussionist, Rene Almodovar. Creating a new genre called "trans-fusion" was a must in order to classify the intermingling styles of Jazz, Fusion, Latin, and Global rhythms in their songs. Their sound is full of catchy melodic instrumental hooks and grooves that allows their music to not be limited to either age or genre. Music is emotion, and it should translate - without words - the true feeling of the song. There are no language barriers in instrumental music. No politics, no biased points of view, or rhetoric.
+
There is only the compilation of notes brought forth with skill and unity to produce an experience for the listener as well as the player. Find yourself in an 11th century town, like "San Gimignano", being served a cafe by a "barrista" on an ancient cobblestone walkway while watching the pigeons resting on one of the nobleman's towers. Music is an invitation to dream, to feel, to indulge. We invite you to dive in and be taken away to enjoy what instrumental music has to offer. Caption a "Slice of Life" ! BILL BERRY is funny. Funny ha-ha, not funny strange. Bill Berry's songs are smart, tuneful, true stories about the world as he sees it. He is an improv comic, a blues and jazz disc jockey, and a composer and songwriter for TV and film. His latest musical comedy will premier this year. He also produces a show every month in Silverlake called Bill Berry's Songwriter's Square. So why is he performing with just a guitar and a kazoo tonight? He likes variety. He's funny like that. Once you hear him, you won't forget him. Check him out at Billberrymusic.com.

7 pm (Saturday) PATRICK BALL plays the BeeKay Theatre in a show presented by Fiddler’s Crossing, in Tehachapi 93561; www.grungehobbit.com; 661-823-9994.
+
Last time in the little mountain town, Patrick played to a sold-out audience. Considered one of the premier Celtic harp players in the world, Ball returns in "O'Carolan's Farewell to Music," a one-man show presented by Fiddlers Crossing in the BeeKay theatre.
+
Written by Patrick Ball and Peter Glazer, the play brings to the stage the legendary life, turbulent times and captivating music of Ireland's most celebrated artist.
+
The Guide’s special “MUSICIAN PROFILE” and the theme of the show…
+
Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries was a troubled, tumultuous place. The old Gaelic order had been shattered by the English invaders, and the poets, the bards and the harp players were set out to walk the roads from place to place in search of shelter and patronage. Yet this dark period of Irish history produced, in Turlough O'Carolan, a Celtic harper and composer of such brilliance, grace and character that he is to this day regarded as the country's greatest and most beloved musician.
+
In "O'Carolan's Farewell to Music," Patrick Ball tells the blind harper's story through the character of poet and fellow harper, Charles MacCabe, O'Carolan's life-long friend and traveling companion. Through MacCabe's eyes and 14 of Carolan's tunes played on the rare wire-strung harp, we are drawn into this storm-tossed chapter of Irish history. The play is filled with Irish wit and pathos, and demonstrates both the power of friendship and the vital role of the artist in troubled times.
+
Although of Irish heritage, Ball was actually born and raised in California and thought he would grow up to be a lawyer like his father. While he studied music during his younger days, playing piano and guitar and annoying his college roommate with his tin whistle, it was his study of the lyrical, turbulent history of Ireland that fully engaged him. On a visit to the Emerald Isle, he fell in love with the eloquence and fire of the Irish oral tradition, and with the Celtic wire-strung harp with its crystalline, bell-like voice. In his words, he "came to know that marvelous unity of Irish words, music and history" that would become his passion and livelihood.
+
Upon returning to California, he received a Masters Degree in History from Dominican College and then set off to see the country. In the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, his love for the spoken word was rekindled when he encountered the living oral tradition of the Appalachian storytellers. After another trip to Ireland, Ball was ready to create his vocation by combining the things he loved most -- Irish history, the spoken word and music. His first step was to find a maker of the wire-strung Celtic harp and teach himself to play.
+
Ball now tours extensively, performing in concert as well as in his theatre piece. He has recorded nine instrumental and three spoken word albums that have won awards in both categories.
+
Performances are Sat, Jan 5, at 7 pm, and Sunday (matinee) Jan 6, at 3 pm.
+
Tickets may be purchased by credit card at 661-823-9994. Tix, $25. Doors open one-half hour before the performance. For last-minute ticket availability on the day of the performance, call 661-823-9994.

Sat, Jan 5, in Palmdale:
7 pm The MacMAMMALS and ELAYNA play Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; 661-272-9530; www.butlerscoffee.com/music.html.
+
THE MacMAMMALS are old friends of the BROWNE SISTERS, and they’ll serve-up a hearty musical stew of Celtic and acoustic music from the British Isles and North America, seasoned with a touch of bluegrass and salted with a few songs of the sea. Kevin, at the venue says, “It's been too long since CAROL SCHRYVER (vocals and guitar) and RON BLOOM (vocals, guitar, mandolin) have graced our stage, and they'll be just the ticket to get things rolling.”
+
Then, it’s “AV's First Lady of Folk, the always engaging ELAYNA… taking you higher and higher, like you've never been lifted before. From fiery folk to gentle pokes, Elayna, accompanied by DAVE "THE DUDE" SPROWL on bass and vocals, will be showing one and all just how rich and rewarding our musical heritage can be, be it some long lost gem from the 1920s or some ‘little ditty’ Elayna wrote just last week. Make no mistake -- this is one lady who's kept her eyes and ears open, and her sharp, literate and passionate musicianship and commitment always shines through.” – Kevin Burton Smith.
+
Butler’s “Music Guy” also offers an entertaining rant, when he asks, “Are you as tired of the End of the World as we are? Whether it's ancient Mayans, a stuck-in-the-mud bunch of Congressional cliff divers or just some old crank in the corner bemoaning the state of just about everything that's happened since 1949, it seems like lately there's always someone trying to harsh your buzz. Well, the heck with that. I'm tired of it. And I bet you're tired of it too. So let's not play their gloom and doom game. The heck with all the misery dealers out there -- we can be better than that. And guess what? I know a spot where that's possible, where the good times will roll, the people are friendly, the food's great and the music's prime. All that's missing is you. So let's kick off the jams and start the New Year right, with an evening of guitars and melody and might and power and passion.”
+
No cover, just buy something to eat and drink while you watch the show.

+
Always a hit here on their annual rounds, SHAMALAMACORD is AARON (“DUCKMANDU”) SEEMAN on accordion and MIKE PENNY on Tsugaru shamisen. As a duo and as solo players, Mike and Aaron are each actively engaged in extending the capabilities of their instruments. The Tsugaru shamisen is the most powerful sounding and popular of the three major types of shamisen, the Tsugaru style comes from Northern Japan. It has enjoyed a resurgence among young people in the last twenty years in Japan, and is therefore a tradition very much alive.
+
Within two years of picking up the instrument, MIKE PENNY competed in the annual Kanagi Tsugaru Shamisen competition in Northern Japan and received the "nyuusho" or "runner-up" award in his class out of a field of 200, an honor never before bestowed on a non-Japanese player. He also plays in the Tsugaru Shamisen trio, Monsters of Shamisen.
+
AARON SEEMAN often performs solo as DUCKMANDU. He holds a B.A. in Piano and a Masters in Composition from UC Santa Cruz. As Duckmandu, he has produced three CDs using accordion and voice to produce accordion renditions of punk rock and mainstream rock that evoke the original music to an astonishing degree. As Duckmandu, he has also recorded a solo CD of more traditional material. Tix, $15.

+
He has been a mover and shaker in so many iconic American groups that his Wikipedia bio is longer than many names you know. He is coming in from the Atlantic Seaboard to play The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Most of what he did in the early days centered around The Ice House and Bob Stane, so there is a relationship there.
+
JERRY YESTER is an American folk-rock musician, record producer, and arranger grew-up in Burbank. He formed a duo with brother Jim Yester, THE YESTER BROTHERS, and starting playing folk clubs in Los Angeles in 1960. While Jim was in the army, Jerry joined first THE NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS, and then, in 1963, THE MODERN FOLK QUARTET. The MFQ issued two folk-pop albums in the next two years, and Yester also branched out into other recordings, playing piano on the LOVIN' SPOONFUL's "Do You Believe in Magic?" in 1965. The MFQ split up in 1966, and Yester began work as a solo artist and as a producer, with his wife JUDY HENSKE, his brother Jim's band THE ASSOCIATION, THE TURTLES, and TIM BUCKLEY, for whom he produced “Goodbye and Hello” and “Happy Sad.” The following year, he joined the LOVIN’ SPOONFUL, replacing ZAL YANOVSKY, for whom he also later worked as producer, but soon afterwards the Spoonful split-up for some years.
+
In 1969, Henske, Yester and Yanovsky put together the cult album “Farewell Aldebaran,” on which Yester played nearly a dozen different instruments.
+
The following year, Yester and Henske formed a new band, ROSEBUD, but the band dissolved in 1971 and the couple then divorced. Yester continued to work as a producer and arranger on albums by PAT BOONE, AZTEC TWO STEP, and TOM WAITS, and in the 1970s he performed with THE ASSOCIATION and the re-formed MODERN FOLK QUARTET. In the mid 1980s, he moved to Hawaii and formed a dance band. In 1991 both Yester brothers joined a re-formed version of the LOVIN’ SPOONFUL, with whom Yester continues to tour. He now resides in the area of Harrison, Arkansas. Bob Stane, who has followed him for all these years, says, “This will be great fun with a generous helping of humor. Tix are $15, so cheap to see, and hear, a legend. No doubt a Q & A at the end of the show.”

Thu-Sat, Jan 10-12, in OC (Costa Mesa):
8 pm PACIFIC SYMPHONY, with Grammy-award winning violinist JAMES EHNES, presents Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” in Segerstrom Hall, at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, 600 Town Center Dr, Costa Mesa; 714-556-2787; www.ocpac.org.
+
PACIFIC SYMPHONY rings in 2013 with a concert featuring two timeless masterpieces, each with skyscraping grandeur, sheer beauty, and energy to match the excitement of the New Year: Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.” Canadian virtuoso JAMES EHNES takes the stage for Beethoven’s crowning achievement, the most frequently performed violin concerto in the repertoire. Described by The Guardian as “effusively lyrical” and “hair-raisingly virtuosic,” the Grammy-award winning violinist reveals the exquisite lyricism of Beethoven’s work. The orchestra, led by Scottish guest conductor GARRY WALKER, tells the story of “1,001 Nights” through the music of Rimsky-Korsakov, once called the “master magician of orchestration,” in his “Scheherazade.” This concert runs three nights, Jan 10-12, in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall; a preview talk with Alan Chapman begins at 7 pm, so be sure to go early. Tickets: 714-755-5799 or www.PacificSymphony.org.

+
People have been saying nice things about Dave Morrison for years. Many of them were other songwriters who were busily recording his songs for years before he went into the studio. Legendary Philadelphia Folk DJ GENE SHAY played a couple of Dave's tunes on his radio show during the last “Philadelphia Folk Festival” which Gene founded and hosts. Shay compares Dave to the late STEVE GOODMAN (who wrote “City of New Orleans”). Acclaimed Chicago duo SMALL POTATOES has recorded two of Dave's songs and calls him, "Our second-favorite songwriter." (Who's their number-one? Michael Smith, writer of “The Dutchman.” Not too shabby, eh?)
+
Though not able to tour till recently, Dave has long been known as a dynamic and entertaining performer on the local scene, including the Coffee Gallery Backstage. Dave’s album, “A Little Farther Down The Line,” got a rave review in “American Songwriter,” after its world premiere on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” where he performed the album live a few years back. The review says, “Long one of L.A.’s most beloved songwriters, Dave Morrison has made the album we’ve waited for ... There’s keen intelligence, humor, depth and compassion. But more than anything else, there’s heart. He projects genuinely poignant details of real life in a way few can with just words and music. With a stunning economy of language and visceral folk-rock feel, he paints dimensional pictures with a delicate blend of words and tunes. Mourn no more about the dearth of meaningful music. Listen to this. Four Stars.” -- Paul Zollo, Nov / Dec 2007 edition.
+
Russ Paris, of Russ & Julie’s House Concerts, says, "Dave Morrison is a songwriter’s songwriter, but that’s nothing new. I’ve been hearing that from songwriters in the Los Angeles area for many years now who were also describing Dave as one of the great unrecorded songwriters in the area. Times change. Dave has released a great debut solo CD that surely lives up to its promise. More importantly, Dave conveys those songs on stage like he’s been doing it his whole life, with passion, presence, and an irascible charm that will win over any audience."
+
Dave will be joined onstage by his band, GREG KRUEGER on mandolin, Dobro and lead guitar, ANNIE BOXELL on piano and backing vocals, and the legendary CHAD WATSON on bass. More at www.davemorrisonmusic.com.
+
Opening the show is ANNIE BOXELL. Once based in Charleston South Carolina, Annie was a mainstay of the East Coast music scene with her band THE VICIOUS CIRCLE. A seasoned pianist and singer, she's been turning heads and ears since arriving in Southern Cal two years ago. Her songs are as honest and open-hearted as they are tuneful, and her experience in improv comedy theater lends an “anything-can-happen” air of fun to her performances. She's joined by TONY CARAFONE on lead guitar, and STEVE REID on percussion. More at www.facebook.com/AnnieBoxellMusic.

MARY McCASLIN and the late JIM RINGER first met in the summer of 1972 at the legendary folk music camp/retreat called “Sweet’s Mill” in the Sierra foothills above Fresno, California. Both were pursuing solo careers and making recordings at the time, but soon began touring the country and performing together – each doing a set then closing their shows with a duet performance. Eventually they recorded the album, “The Bramble & the Rose,” which became a hallmark of folk duet recordings. This album, originally on vinyl, now re-released on CD, contains both traditional and contemporary material and remains very popular today. Mary re-acquaints and introduces younger listeners to selections from “The Bramble & the Rose” – this time with acclaimed L.A.-based singer-songwriter RICK SHEA, an authentic country–folk artist in much the same fashion as Ringer. Shea has toured as a multi-instrumentalist sideman for DAVE ALVIN’s band, THE GUILTY MEN, along with opening the shows and played on Alvin’s Grammy winning recording “Public Domain.” Influenced by country singers Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Lefty Frizzell, Shea’s recordings have received accolades from publications including the L.A. Weekly, Dirty Linen, and the Acoustic Americana Music Guide.

8 pm SEVERIN BROWNE and JAMES HURLEY play a stellar double bill of performing-songwriter talent at the “CALTECH FOLK MUSIC SERIES” in Beckman Institute Auditorium (aka “Little Beckman”) 322 S Michigan Av, Pasadena; 626-395-4652, or toll-free 888-2CALTECH (1-888-222-5832);.www.folkmusic.caltech.edu. These two fine singer-songwriters have each toured nationally and globally and performed throughout their home turf of Southern California for some time. Each has built their own following of devoted fans, and series producers tell the Guide, “Our hope is to bring them some new ears, along with current fans. We're excited to be able to present them together in one show, and the rumor is that they will do a few songs together!”
+
SEVERIN BROWNE comes from a musical family, including his father, CLYDE JACK BROWNE, a jazz composer and musician, and his very famous brother, JACKSON BROWNE. Severin's first big break was signing with Motown Records back in the 1970s, where he became a house songwriter (the label’s first white songwriter) and he recorded his first two albums there. Since leaving that environment, he has chosen a low-profile career by playing in smaller venues locally and putting out occasional recordings of original songs. He is a very popular teacher at “SummerSongs,” an annual mecca for budding songwriters who want to learn from the best. (It’s held in Cambria, along the Central California Coast.)
+
Get a sample of Severin doing the title song from his latest CD, “Lucky Man,” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_QnB0TEbZw.
+
As series producers Rx and Nick observe, “Severin’s songwriting is always clever, and he manages to combine deep wisdom and brilliant insight, humorous and involving music, and often intricate and complex rhythms and chord changes. He is a very engaging, down-to-earth performer who you will enjoy spending time with.” That’s true live and on live radio, where the Guide’s editor has hosted him multiple times. More at www.severinbrowne.com.
+
JAMES HURLEY “is truly in a class by himself, not so much thinking outside the box as refusing to admit its existence,” note Rex and Nick. James’ “clever lyrics and precise diction and delivery are so engaging that it’s possible to lose sight of his elaborate, sparkling guitar work until he gets to the solo and blows you away.” The Guide concurs, having hosted live performances with him on radio, as well.
+
The Caltech guys have him nailed: “Award-winning and internationally touring performing songwriter JAMES HURLEY projects the charm, ease and friendly confidence of a seasoned performer in his natural element. His smooth, passionate voice and masterful, tasty guitar playing lead the listener through a colorful and diverse catalog of original material that reflects influences from swing-era jazz and blues, the rock and pop of the British invasion, the current ‘acoustic renaissance’ and the whimsical imagery of Saturday morning cartoons. This is a performer that follows his own muse and invites the listener to come along for a delightful ride.”
+
He’s also the only artist we know who sings a jingle to get you to remember his website.
+
Sample a bit o’ James Hurleys performing his song, “Whisper,” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLF8-FKERzc. More at www.jameshurleymusic.com.
+
Tix are $15 for adults, $5 for Caltech students and children. This show will sell-out, so don’t delay. The Caltech Ticket Office is at 332 South Michigan Avenue and is generally open noon to 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Order by phone at 626-395-4652. (There is a single service charge for each phone order, regardless the number of tickets, so buy tickets for multiple shows. Any remaining tickets are available at the door on the night of the show.

To call this a “jam” doesn’t do it justice. “Collaboration” comes up short. Even “supergroup” seems not to be sufficiently superlative.
+
When the California Guitar Trio and the Montréal Guitare Trio join forces, it’s an experience that can only be called “a six-by-6 string phenomensemble," says the venue.
+
In a pleasantly surprising way, CGT's steel-stringed guitars blend naturally with MG3's nylon-stringed guitars, as each trio's fret boards chase the others' original compositions, along with new arrangements of progressive rock, world, jazz and classical music. You can buy your tickets online.

LATE ADDITION
Sat, Jan 26, in L.A.:
7:30 pm SUSAN JAMES & her band play her CD pre-release show for "Driving Towards the Sun" at Besant Lodge, 2560 N Beachwood Dr, Los Angeles 90068.
+
$10 admission INCLUDES the new CD.
+
With a California hybrid of psychedelic country-folk rock, SUSAN JAMES has shared stages with LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM, SON VOLT, RICHARD THOMPSON, RUFUS WAINWRIGHT, DANIEL LANOIS, and plenty of others.
+
The evening includes lots of music, plus comedy by RICK OVERTON, Tarot Readings by GWENDOLYN P., Vintage Clothes for sale by CACTUS TREE VINTAGE, plus Magic Tricks.
+
Susan talks about how special it is to play the historic Besant Lodge. She says it's a "unique place -- it's like a little California Mission. Built by Annie Besant as a theosophical church and later a silent film theater. Annie was a woman WAY ahead of her time." Susan attached Besant's wiki bio for you to read, and adds, "She'll be there in spirit, I'm sure!" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Besant
+
Los Angeles-based Susan James and Band includes members Eric Heywood on pedal steel, Woody Aplanap on guitar, Jason Chesney on bass, Richard Gowen on drums, and Susan on guitar and mandolin. Acclaimed comedian Rick Overton opens with a comedy set. Vendors set-up indoors.
+
Susan says, “I wanted to do something a little different than your average club gig to celebrate the new album, so I’ve created a special celebration with magic, tarot, comedy, music of course, and vintage clothing. The Besant Lodge is an amazing historic place just north of Franklin on Beachwood Dr. We’re looking forward to everyone having a great time. And yes, we’ll have drinks and some sort of food items available as well.”
+
The story of the new album, "Driving Toward The Sun," has a more-interesting-than-usual connection in her last project. When Susan James released “Highways, Ghosts, Hearts & Home" in 2011, it earned the praise of famous rocker RYAN ADAMS, who tweeted about her “great songs” and killer band. That was noticed in other arenas. Now, on "Driving Toward the Sun," which officially comes out in February on Megaforce/Sony RED, James teams up with producer RYAN ULYATE, who works with TOM PETTY, and previously with GEORGE HARRISON and JEFF LYNNE, and other famous musicians.
+
The new album also includes Don Heffington, Neal Casal, Jason Chesney, Walfredo Reyes Jr., Eric Heywood, Richard Gowen, John McDuffie, Joseph Karnes, and Brian Macleod.
+
"People might want to think it's sort of a ‘country’ album, simply because some of the songs have pedal steel. I love the sound of a good pedal steel. On this album it’s used more as ‘color’ than a ‘country stamp’ on my songs,” she explains. “I naturally consider my music equal parts folk, rock, acoustic, singer-songwriter and yes, a little country, but with a specific California sound. And a little psychedelia thrown in for good measure.”
+
RICK OVERTON is a socio-political comedy veteran with over 40 years under his belt (several of them above his belt at this point too). His insightful comedy hits your head, ricochets off your brain and lands in a belly laugh. A brief glimpse at IMDB or You Tube confirms that. Susan says, "Rick was a member of the 99% when we were still the 72%."
+
Doors at 7:30 pm. $10 admission INCLUDES the new CD.

  1. No, those Mayans got it right after all. It reallyand must be the end. There is music in the DESERT tonight!!! Amazing!!! Blows me away, a show as good as LA is at Butler's in Palmdale and TWO places with music in Tehachapi!!! That NEVER happens here!!! I live in Lancaster which is as dead as bleached bones. I don't know how you find out about anything you write about, but thank you for remembering the people in AV (Artless Valley, which tonight will not be so artless!!!)

  2. Moved here from Nashville in October. Thought the music in lala land was all garbage. A friend sent me to your site. Man, there is nothing like this! Not even in Music City. I mean the site and the scene. I don't think I'm staying home even one night next week. Appreciate that you do this, really do! - Seth

  3. Wanted to say thanks for sending me to the artwalks you put in your music guide. Like you said turned out to be great for xmas shopping and everyone was so happy with gifts made by artists instead of in China sweatshops.

  4. O my effing self. I got away from those clubs where everything is too loud to talk to anybody and started going to places on this site. Hookup action: outstanding. Some places only attract old people but it doesn't take long to figure which places and bands younger people go to see and what places work for meeting interesting people. Got on some listserves. Anyway this music guide is a great hookup guide, people! Alot of this music makes people happy and its not to loud to talk to them. They usually turn out to be real, not the fakes in the clubs with the long lines to get inside. So I have not been to my old places in like weeks and this action is way better!!!!!!

  5. Breakfast turned into brunch for us reading the latest concert and tv postings. We used to do that with the Times Calendar Section. Even though we still need other sources for movies and once in awhile something else to do, you cover all the music and artists we care about going out to see.
