LIVE MUSIC EVENTS, update, Feb 23 through 26 and BEYOND… 2013

.
.
Oscars on TV vs. live music?
.
The OSCARS happen this year on TV in real-time on the West Coast, where they are awarded for real, and those who live a mile from the theatre are not faced with the three-hour delay we experienced with the GRAMMYS, which also happen here, but in a time warp. That means a 5:30 pm (Pacific) start time for Oscar.
.
But it doesn't sit well with everyone. Especially with presenters and musicians playing afternoon matinees and early evening shows. L.A.'s best intimate acoustic music venue is taking the hit both ways.
.
Of course, that means one of those frequently funny e-missives has arrived from Coffee Gallery Backstage impresario BOB STANE.
.
He says, "I lobbied all of my friends in the film business to do this Academy Award thing on Monday afternoon but they said, 'No, Bob, it would interfere with the soap operas and gossip shows, so just live with it on Sunday night.'"
.
He continues, "Sigh. O. K., so be it. Neither my afternoon matinee show with STRING MADNESS, nor my evening show with RICK SHEA & CLAIRE HOLLEY will be completely full. Just come on in. Remember.... I ASKED you to come to The Coffee Gallery Backstage. The Academy Awards FORGOT TO INVITE you. Go where you are wanted. Oh, they wanted you to come, but in the hustle and bustle, they forgot. I remembered you."
.
Oh, Bob. We all remember you, too. Whether or not some of us opt for the TV hoopla surrounding movies we didn't see.

Thinking about writing the stories of your life? Wondering where to start? Or have you started but feel unclear about how to organize your writing? Looking for ideas to make your tales a better read? Are you a published author looking for help writing in memoir form? In this workshop, you’ll use specially designed techniques that help enliven and enrich books of memoir, and tools to sharpen your writing and organization skills. IWOSC says, “We’ll get you started, and you’ll find you won’t want to stop. Please bring a brief sample (one-three pages) from what you have written, for review. If you have not yet begun, that’s perfectly fine. We’ll be writing one to two short pieces, sharing them with the workshop leader and others in the class, giving you feedback on various aspects of memoir writing.”
+
Themes include:
• Tips on writing a memoir that even folks who are not your mother, or your kids, will savor
• Detail derail: how much is too much, too little?
• Themes and Structure: considering a variety of ways to hook your stories together to draw readers in
• Dialog: adding life and spice to your stories
• Character: ways to give dimension to the people in your life, by showing, not telling your reader about them.

Sat, Feb 23, in Altadena:
7 pm MATT & SHANNON HEATON play the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named by the Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
Ostensibly, the husband and wife duo of Matt and Shannon Heaton bring gutsy melodies, crafty lyrics and traditional Irish-style tunes to the stage. But there is far more happening here, well beyond the Celtic and Irish genres, and it’s worthy of a lengthier-than-usual introduction of this duo and their music.
+
The Boston-based pair have been praised by Dirty Linen magazine as “Irish music with a wonderfully rich and earthy sound ... and an infectious spirit and vitality that translates into bright, uplifting music that will make you smile.” When performing as a pair they integrate harmony singing with traditional and original instrumentals on Irish flute, guitar and vocals. Even if you don't normally listen to Celtic music, Matt and Shannon offer a show so fresh, so quirky, so invigorating, and brimming with so much personality, you'll wish you had heard them sooner! It's music that satisfies both die-hard Celtic enthusiasts and fans of great songwriting alike. Every Irish traditional musician has a collection of peak session memories: the spontaneous night of tunes after hours in the back of a pub, the house party in rural Clare with that wonderfully ancient concertina player, the songs swapped backstage at a festival.
+
Matt and Shannon Heaton share many similar Irish music memories, because they have performed together from their first meeting in Chicago in 1991. Behind their Irish flute- and guitar-driven tunes and stirring songs is a deep well of mutual memories, setbacks, and triumphs.
+
Having built their act from years of touring together, first with the band SIUCRA, then as a duo, Matt and Shannon have grown into thoroughly entertaining performers. They bring to the stage a depth of shared experience and a love for Irish music; their stage banter is comfortable, often hilarious.
+
“Their playing is masterful and inventive, their arrangements city-smart and spacious.
Still, they never forget that Irish music is, at its heart, a neighborly form meant for sharing, not showing off." -- Scott Alarik, Boston Globe.
+
Musically speaking, the Heatons play the heck out of their instruments -- Irish wood flute, accordion, guitar, and bouzouki. After years of study in Chicago and many nights of music in Clare, Galway, and their adopted home of Boston, Irish Music Magazine’s John O’Regan wrote, “their duet playing is tight, sweet, and tasteful, lacking nothing on either technical expertise or instrumental virtuosity.”
+
Matt and Shannon sometimes sing centuries-old songs, making the music feel current and conversational. Their treatment of traditional music is relevant to American audiences. In O’Regan’s “songwise,” one reviewer noted, “there are hints an older domestic sound, the familiar down home harmonies of The Carter Family and Tim and Mollie O’Brien.”
+
Like Richard Thompson or Nic Jones, the Heatons’ music comes from a traditional aesthetic, a devotion to strong traditional bones, and a passion for reaching out to the modern world around them. They are devoted to Irish traditional music and uplift listeners by connecting with each other and the people around them.
+
Before focusing on Irish music, Matt earned a classical guitar degree, played with Chicago popsters the Flavor Channel, and fronted Nuevo tango group Orquesta Atipica. Meanwhile Shannon studied flute and ethnomusicology at Northwestern University, joined Matt’s tango band, and took weekend trips to Chicago’s Wat Dhammaram to continue the Saw Oo (lap fiddle) and Thai singing studies she began when she was an exchange student in Thailand.
+
By the time Shannon was 16 years old, her favorite mixed tape included “Highlife music” from her family’s tenure in Nsukka, Nigeria; Native American stories from her parents’ research trip for their book, “Let My People Know;” traditional Thai songs on Saw Duang and Saw Oo from her year in Suphanburi, Thailand; and as much of Matt Molloy’s 1984 “Stony Steps” as would fit on the rest of the cassette.
+
Early exposure to languages and folk melodies instilled in Shannon a love of tradition. From her early piano and recorder lessons (from her mom and Belgian neighbor in Nigeria) to her flute and Irish flute studies in Chicago, Shannon was drawn to traditional music. And when she first heard Irish flute playing on her Grandpa Murphy’s turntable she was hooked on Irish.
+
Though Shannon specializes in Irish wooden flute and traditional Irish-style singing, she adores the Chicago musicians who got her started, and is deeply involved with her local Boston traditional music scene. She co-founded Boston’s Celtic Music Fest and teaches for Boston’s Comhaltas. She has retained a deep interest in world music, especially the music of Thailand. Shannon and husband Matt Heaton included their own Irish-style version of Thai classic “Lao Dueng Duen” on their 2009 release “Lovers’ Well,” their 4th CD as a duo.
+
Matt’s first taste of professional music was behind the organ console as a page-turner for his father CHARLES HEATON, a noted organist and composer. After a couple of false starts on the piano and trumpet, Matt picked up his first guitar, a Harmony electric plus amp (and butter dish) for $35 at a garage sale. After the amplifier exploded, he focused his energies on the acoustic guitar.
+
Though Matt studied classical guitar at Northwestern University (MMus) and Italy, played rock in Chicago and tango in Denver, it is Boston’s vibrant Irish music scene where he has made his musical home. What began as an obsession with an unlabeled cassette tape (which later turned out to be “The Planxty Collection”) and a courtship with a young Irish flute player named Shannon, has led to a vibrant Irish music performance career. In addition to his duo work with wife Shannon, he is highly sought after as accompanist, and has performed with traditional luminaries AOIFE CLANCY, ROBBIE O’CONNELL, EMILY SMITH, and the BOYS OF THE LOUGH.

The venue’s “music guy” tells us, “Those of you expecting some touchy feely New Age chanting or politically correct ‘Hollywood Injun’ smoke lodge caterwauling from this acclaimed Native-American world music singer-songwriter have got another think coming. Jimmy's a kick ass performer who brings a rousing and rhythmic rock 'n' roll edge to his own kinda roots-influenced Americana, always personal and passionate, but global in scope. His heartfelt music doesn't so much step over borders and boundaries as mow them flat. Last time he played Butler's he just totally wowwed us, so this time he's doing two sets. Things kick off at seven, but get there early if you want a seat!” More on Jimmy Lee and his music at www.crystal-phoenix.com.

Sat, Feb 23, at UCLA:
8 pm ROBERT RANDOLPH PRESENTS THE SLIDE BROTHERS, the band of CALVIN COOKE, AUBREY GHENT, CHUCK CAMPBELL, & DARICK CAMPBELL, plus special guest OTIS TAYLOR, at the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) series in Royce Hall, on the UCLA campus in Westwood; 310-825-2101.
+
A very rare L.A. appearance by trance-bluesman OTIS TAYLOR with brand new CD, “My World is Gone” (Telarc/Concord), on a bill with ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE SLIDE BROTHERS.
+
Visionary songwriter OTIS TAYLOR returns with his powerful and unique blend of roots music and narrative poetry. His new 13th album, “My World Is Gone,” explores the struggles of Native Americans, with contributions from Indigenous frontman / guitar virtuoso MATO NANJI. The new CD was released February 12, 2013 on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, and a lightning bolt of musical creativity and social commentary. Its songs crackle with poetic intelligence and a unique, adventurous sound that balances the modern world with echoes of ancient Africa, Appalachia and more.
+
To call Taylor a cutting edge artist is an understatement. Although his music is based in the blues and folk realm, his meticulously crafted recordings crash the barriers of jazz, rock, funk, Americana and myriad other genres to create a hybrid that Taylor labels “trance blues.” And that signature style serves as a backbone for his frank tales of struggle, freedom, desire, conflict and, of course, love.
+
“I’ve written songs about slavery, but here in America that’s considered part of the past,” Taylor explains. “What’s happened and what’s happening to Native Americans is still going on. A lot of people forget that. This is a reminder.”
+
With his customary brevity, power and grace, Taylor conveys his stories in intimate detail and uses his rich baritone voice to give his characters breath and humanity. The album starts on point with “My World Is Gone,” portraying how the gilded seductions of the white man’s culture undermined the Native American way of life. The melancholy in Taylor’s and Nanji’s vocal performance, as they sing from the perspective of an Indian tormented by temptation and loss, is buoyed by the gentle melodies of Anne Harris’ fiddle and Nanji’s electric and acoustic guitars — the acoustic six-string an Otis Taylor signature model, with only 14 frets, built by the premier instrument makers at Santa Cruz Guitars.
+
Taylor revisits his song “Lost My Horse,” which originally appeared on 2001’s White African, with a new arrangement that features him and Nanji trading guitar and mandolin lines.
+
“In the days of the frontier, having a horse could be a matter of life or death, or comfort or poverty, and the horse has been an important part of Native American culture in the west, so the song fit perfectly,” he explains.
+
“Sand Creek Massacre Mourning,” which recounts the murder of 200 Cheyenne and Arapaho victims by Col. John Chivington’s cavalry in 1864, rests on the backbone of Taylor’s banjo, his primary instrument. He’s played mostly electric banjos on previous albums, save for 2008’s roots-focused Recapturing the Banjo, but on My World Is Gone Taylor employs
four-, five- and six-string acoustic models. “I wanted to get back to that organic sound, because the banjo’s spoken to me since I was a kid,” he says. “Its voice instantly brings you back in time, and so much of My World Is Gone is about history and tradition that its sound is perfect for these songs.”

+
CLAIRE HOLLEY, a Yep Roc Records artist, has had her self-titled debut featured on NPR’s “Weekend Edition.” She writes songs that are literary, playful, meditative, and earthy. A native of Mississippi, she owes much to the southern tradition of storytelling, and just as much to the southern tradition of charm. With spare, delicate arrangements and a frank, lovely, and versatile sound, she sings deceptively simple songs. Claire began playing music when she was just two years old, when she and her grandmother, an accomplished jazz pianist, would play chop sticks on the piano at her home in Jackson, Mississippi.
+
Claire moved to Chicago for college and began performing at coffeehouses and writing songs. At the suggestion of one of her professors, she studied the poems of William Blake and set one of them to music. That, along with two songs she wrote for the college arts CD, Kodon, set a nice foundation for recording songs for “Night Air,” her first independent release. Soon after college she moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she began recording in earnest, getting radio play on WUNC’s “Back Porch Music.” She signed with Yep Roc Records and things keep getting better.
+
RICK SHEA, a longtime Southern California singer-songwriter, cut his teeth in the bars and honky-tonks of San Bernardino where he grew up. He has gone on to build a solid career with seven critically acclaimed albums and performances all over Southern California, the U.S. and Europe. Equally at home with an acoustic guitar or with his worn old Telecaster Shea’s songs embrace everything from the traditional folk and country music of California he grew up with to Norteño and border rock. “Staunchly independent...represents the best of California music,” LA Weekly.
+
“Shea is to interior California what Joe Ely is to West Texas; his music evokes deep Kern, San Bernardino and Riverside counties the way Ely nailed down Laredo, two pinches of old Mexico, a blast of exhaust from the boss man's new Suburban and a baseline of working stiff desperation…and the best damn country voice since Merle hisself.” -- Jackson Griffith, in Pulse Magazine.

His stuff is upbeat, intelligent and classy, He's known for his widespread appeal to a variety of audiences and some say his music knows no boundaries. Mon, Feb 25, in Culver City:
7:30 pm “KEYS TO CREATING SUCCESSFUL MEMOIRS” is a panel discussion presented by Independent Writers of Southern California (IWOSC) at Veterans Memorial Building, 4117 Overland (at Culver Bl), Culver City. Free parking, enter on Culver Bl.
+
This is a follow-on to the seminar held on Saturday, but that is not a prerequisite to attend.
+
+
Writing a memoir? Contemplating tackling the form? The panel of memoir writers and teachers, plus IWOSC’s “legal specialist in things literary, will cover memoir writing do’s and don’t’s, and getting the book of your life story out there.”
+
Topics to be covered include:
• What is a memoir? How much does it have to do with who’s telling the story? Everything, maybe, and if that’s so, how does one create an authentic and credible narrative persona?
• How much do we know when we start?
• What do we stand to discover in the writing (and reading)?
• Truth in nonfiction -- how much can one stray, if at all?
• Can the writer reveal "secrets" about characters -- especially if they were "bad guys" -- without
getting hauled into court?
• Structure -- do you have to start your life story at the beginning? Effective themes and other elements to consider in creating a page turner.
• Dialog -- use and caveats in memoir writing.
• Once you've got your book, do you get an agent? How?
• What are the legal need-to-know’s of signing book and publishing contracts?
• Pros and cons of self-publishing.

Prior to taking this turn in her life, Lee Gale had a 37-year career as a probation officer. After retiring, she and her 85-year-old father started attending an acting class for seniors at Emeritus College in Santa Monica, just for fun. Ms. Gruen wrote the scenes they performed together for three years in the class showcases, bonding more than at any time in their lives. She went on to become a working actress, appearing in television, short films, commercials and community theater. She regularly performs at her alma mater, UCLA, for the UCLA Medical School, portraying patients for student training, and was also one of six supporting exercise/dancers in a 2011 Jane Fonda exercise DVD. Her transition to becoming an actress as a senior has been written about in Time Magazine and the Los Angeles Times. She is currently working on her next book of memoirs, told in short story form, and continues to be an active advocate for senior community programs. Tue, Feb 26, not music, but VERY worthwhile, in L.A.:
7:30 pm “THEATER OF WITNESS,” a performing group with torture survivors who live in L.A. County, perform tonight in the community room at Mercado La Paloma, 3655 S Grand Av (just S of Jefferson), L.A. 90007.
+
Group co-founder DIANE LEFER, with HECTOR & ALESSIA CARTONI, explains, “We've been creating ‘THEATER OF WITNESS,’ a performing group with torture survivors who live in L.A. County. Theatrically, it's an experiment. These people aren't actors, they've never spoken in public before, we've had scant rehearsal time, some participants dropped out, the script keeps changing and getting simplified. But regardless, we hope to get them a supportive audience of fellow Angelenos who can recognize their courage and the challenges they face here in L.A. as they work to rebuild their lives. Everyone is invited to celebrate these extraordinary men and women from Cameroon, El Salvador, Guatemala, Russia, and Uganda.” More at www.dianelefer.weebly.com.
+
Your editor adds, “I have been humbled in the company of survivors of torture at the annual Thanksgiving Day feasts at the Learning Garden at Venice High School, at the program run bt DAVID KING. The grace and presence of many of these individuals, who have endured things we cannot even imagine, is a profoundly moving experience.”
+
There's a parking lot and usually lots of street parking. The community room is in the back of the Mercado. Walk toward Chichen Itza restaurant and make a left. No reservations needed. FREE admission.

The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.

In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”

Our Cajun-zydeco dance friends tell us, “If flying in, best to avoid a rental car & parking fees in downtown. Options for rooms include www.hotwire.com for a 3-star hotel ($68) at the airport (with shuttle from terminal) within walking distance to the Cascade light rail station. To / from downtown takes 45 minutes, and drops you 4 short blocks from the fest. [Another option is the] University Place Hotel (www.uplacehotel.com) for $113 / night, including tax & breakfast, ten blocks from the fest.” They also suggest the PSU campus dorm rooms with bath & amenities, $56 to $66 / night, 12 blocks from the fest; www.pdx.edu/conferences/stay-us, where you can click on “individual stay contract” for details.
+
Hotels across the street from the fest include the Marriott and Hotel 50. Both are over $150 / night. The Hilton Hotel (6 blocks away) may be willing to bargain if you arrive without reservations and they have empty rooms.
