The Opening Act: Late-Breaking Miscellanea…
.
Sunday night is the annual broadcast of the GRAMMY AWARDS. This year, it includes scheduled on-air performances by THE LUMINEERS and MUMFORD & SONS, things you might look forward to seeing. The show airs on CBS, and as always, is tape-delayed in Los Angeles. The awards are presented here in L.A. hours before we see them, when the rest of the country sees them live.
+
We celebrate the show’s inclusion of two bands that perform listenable roots music.
+
Otherwise, the event will, as always, present its usual parade of soundalike, sh-thump-thud, revolving-door-rehab, pop-tart-du-jour “celebrities” whose chief claim to musicality is as generic practitioners of incongruous vocal gymnastics that in no way impart appropriate emotions to the lyrical content of whatever it is that’s popular fodder, for whatever reason it’s popular at all.
+
Of course, the recent scandal over faked numbers (reported in our Feb 1 News & Reviews edition) pretty well demolishes the idea that today’s Pop “Stars” were ever really so popular, anyway. And there was the scandal late last year when the rap / hip-hop crowd seized controlling majorities in selection committees and briefly eliminated many GRAMMY categories. Already far less diverse and inclusive of genres than Canada’s Juno Awards, the GRAMMYS could ill afford to lose any of what recognition it affords to non-pop music and musicians.
+
Yes, they do have awards that never seem to get televised, for folk and blues and bluegrass and Cajun-zydeco as if it were an amalgamation, though not for western music, western swing, or honky-tonk. Still, the media-driven hype proclaims the GRAMMY telecast as “Music’s biggest night,” and few journalistic sources question that. Not so, here. (Obviously.)
+
The GRAMMY AWARDS air 8-11:30 pm Sunday on CBS, and you can find “Red-Carpet-at-the-Grammys” shows on cable (ITV Guide channel; FUSE; E! channel) if you want to gawk at who’s wearing what and hear really insipid comments from “entertainment” reporters with nothing interesting to say (they repeat it all week).
