The Opening Act: Late-Breaking Miscellanea…
.
Daytime Saturday, set your recording device to capture a day of all-time classic musicals on TCM (Turner Classic Movies, cable or satellite), and then get thee outdoors! It’s waaaay too beautiful out to stay in! And fire-up the recorder again Sunday night for an all-nighter of more classic musicals, again on TCM. Of course, there IS plenty more music of more recent vintage in other places on the device that used to be called “the tube,” and it’s all in this edition!

. .
Sat, Feb 16, on TV:
9-11 am “AN AMERICAN IN PARIS” (1951) is a 4-star classic musical with great dancing that has an interesting back story: GEORGE GERSWIN say a play with the same title, but he liked only the title. Whereupon, he and brother IRA GERSHWIN wrote all the music for a film with no story. He then hired ALAN J. LERNER to formulate a story and write the script. GENE KELLY was brought-on as the lead character, and he did the dance choreography for all the dancers, including himself, and LESLIE CARON, in her film debut. The result sparkles. On TCM.

.
Sat, Feb 16, on TV:
11 am-1 pm “SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN” (1952) may well be America’s best-ever musical film. GENE KELLY, DEBBIE REYNOLDS, and DONALD O’CONNOR sing and dance their way through this hilarious spoof of moviemaking in the late 1920s, as talkies replaced silent pictures. It’s beautifully staged, a complete delight. On TCM.
