Here’s the latest:
• With all the sabre-rattling in stark contrast to the message of Easter, we received a comment (March 30) from a reader calling himself "Pete for Peace." As he points-out, it's beginning to feel like deju vu all over again. You can read it, and more, and we encourage you to do that, and to add your own. Thanks to Pete, and to all, for your reader comments to our SPECIAL: “Ten-Year Anniversary of the Iraq War, and an Ignored Caution, Before it Happened.” Larry Wines, a working journalist and columnist in 2002, was among the very few in media who warned against the rush to war. The Guide reprinted his original, full-page piece, as published in newspapers six months before the US invaded Iraq. (It’s available, with your readers' comments, in the sidebar at left, or at http://acousticamericana.blogspot.com/2013/03/ten-year-anniversary-of-iraq-war-and.html)
• The Guide’s TUNEFUL TEEVEE is on hiatus. We didn’t have the extra seven hours this week.
• Now, on to The Guide’s presentation of LIVE MUSIC EVENTS...

ROB WOLFSKILL, leader of the late, great, multi-award-winning TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS, has a new group and a new solo album, released March 1. Tonight includes a belated but official CD RELEASE SHOW for that album, “A FORK IN THE ROAD.”
+
“Rob Wolfskill is one of the most talented entertainers to break into the Western Music scene in this decade! [He] is a huge talent, and if you have marveled at his past works wait ‘til you hear what he is up to now!” -- Juni Fisher, WMA Entertainer of the Year.
+
The evening will be complete with attendees receiving a signed copy of the new CD along with a live performance of the album by Rob and his new band, THE SOUTHWEST JUNCTION, whose members are DAN DUNGAN on bass and JESSE OLEMA on fiddle, plus new member CRAIG FERGUSON on guitar.
+
“A Fork in the Road” is a multi-genre effort combining elements of Americana, Roots, Country, Western and Pop. The songs featured on A Fork in the Road include the title track, Fork in the Road, a song initially written by Rob for good friend and ex-band mate, R.J. Mills upon his departure from The Tumbling Tumbleweeds and from California. The song has since become an interesting foreshadowing of the disbandment of THE TUMBLING TUMBLEWEEDS and Rob’s farewell to that chapter in his life. Other songs written by Rob are “When You Look At Me,” a bouncy, “heart-breaky honky-tonk shuffle;” “Ida Lou/Ida Lee,” a heartrendering cowboy waltz with a powerful story; “Life in Kid World,” a very contemporary ballad about the light and dark side of childhood; and, “It Might As Well Be You,” another contemporary acoustic pop song about mustering the courage to step out from the shadows and follow your calling. Other songs featured on the album are “Dixie Lily” and “Roy Rogers,” both written by ELTON JOHN and BERNIE TAUPIN, plus Rob’s, western ballad version of “Home Again” by CAROLE KING; ROBERT CASTLEMAN’s “The Lucky One;” and, JOYCE WOODSON’s, “I Don’t Want to be a Cowboy Anymore.”

In 1998, Shawn Fanning, a teenage hacker and computer programmer, created the code that would become the basis for all peer-to-peer file sharing. Shortly after, Fanning and his business partner, fellow teenager Sean Parker, launched the file-sharing service Napster. What had begun as a largely unknown underground network soon erupted into a full-blown global revolution. Downloaded explores this revolution from its genesis to its peak. It's about the music and the bands, the fans and the moguls and the young tech mavericks that ignited the biggest youth revolt since Alan Freed hit the radio. Please join us for a special screening of the film, followed by discussion and panel, moderated by President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Scott Goldman. Panelists include the film’s director, Alex Winter, and musician/film participant Henry Rollins, and Jordan Berliant, Partner & International Music Manager at The Collective.

+
If Howard Kaylan had sung only one song, the TURTLES’ 1967 number-one smash hit “Happy Together,” his place in rock-and-roll history would still be secure. But that recording, named by BMI as one of the top 50 songs of the 20th century, with more than 5 million radio plays, is only the tip of a most remarkable iceberg. Most artists would have been happy for the five-year success that the Turtles enjoyed, but for Kaylan, that run at the top of the charts was only the beginning. After the TURTLES broke up in 1970, Kaylan, along with career-long partner MARK VOLMAN, surprised the rock world by joining FRANK ZAPPA’s group the MOTHERS OF INVENTION. Overnight, Howard’s squeaky-clean image as an AM radio hitmaker was turned inside out.
+
Hosted by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, hear Kaylan talk about his place at the vortex of rock culture since the heady 1960s, how he remains immersed in that culture today and his memoir, “Shell Shocked: My Life with the Turtles, Flo and Eddie, and Frank Zappa, etc.” Written with music journalist JEFF TAMARKIN, “Shell Shocked” will stand alone as not only one of the best-told music-biz memoirs, but as a candid and unmatchable story of rock-and-roll insanity and success from a man who glories in it all. After the discussion, Kaylan with take audience questions, perform a stripped-down acoustic set, and sign copies of his book.

Beth plays a 45 minute set first, (because she can) and then there are 3 or 4 other acts who do short sets. It's a very intimate setting, and all experiment with their new stuff. +
Glen Hansard is an Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter and principal vocalist / guitarist for the bands THE FRAMES and THE SWELL SEASON. Over the years, Hansard has earned a reputation as not only an unparalleled front man, but also for his dedicated following and his grounded, real-life songs. The same year the song and the soundtrack were also nominated for a GRAMMY Award.

8 pm “AN EVENING WITH NOEL PAUL STOOKEY” at the GRAMMY Museum. All proceeds benefit the GRAMMY Museum. Info and tix, 213-765-6803 or grammymuseum.org.
+
Having recorded over 45 albums, singer-songwriter NOEL PAUL STOOKEY has been altering both the musical and ethical landscape of this country and the world for decades—both as the “Paul” of the legendary Peter, Paul, and Mary and as an independent musician. Funny, irreverently reverent, thoughtful, compassionate…his vocal sound is known all across this land. Raised in the Midwest, he played electric guitar in his high school Rock ’n’ Roll band and hung out at an R&B record shop.
+
At 20, he moved to New York City, looking for independence, but found “Peter” and “Mary” and a career that took on a life of its own, with their first album at the top of the charts for two years. Since then, he has performed in intimate coffeehouses, at the White House and in massive stadiums.
+
Hosted by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director BOB SANTELLI, hear Stookey speak about his prolific songwriting career, the iconic “Wedding Song,” his eternally fresh musical outlook and the making of his most recent album, “One and Many,” which once again revealed his gift for connecting diverse contemporary concerns to inspired musical performances. Additionally, Stookey will take audience questions and perform a selection of songs.

Sat, Apr 6, in Claremont:
2-4 pm 9th Annual “SPRING STORYTELLING CONCERT” with performances by storytellers NICK SMITH, ANGELA LLOYD, JOHN ST. CLAIR, RON CHICK, & ADRIEN LOWERY, presented by INLAND VALLEY STORYTELLERS, at Claremont Friends Meetinghouse, 727 W Harrison Av, Claremont.
+
Storyteller and Caltech Folk Music Society concert co-producer NICK SMITH tells the Guide, “The Inland Valley Storytellers put on two shows a year in the Claremont area, with members from a larger roster. The spring one moves around, and the fall one is normally at the Folk Music Center the Saturday before Thanksgiving, in honor of Dorothy Chase. Most people don’t know that she was both a painter and a performing storyteller, back when she was running the store. Of these tellers, you know me. Angela Lloyd is even better than I am, and I don’t say that lightly. Seriously, she’s one of the few people who can get away with playing spoons or a washboard in the middle of telling a story. She plays several instruments, a lot of which she’s bought at the Folk Music Center over the years. The others cover a wide range of styles and backgrounds. I’m only sorry that we’re missing our other Ron, a retired minister who tells the most outrageous New England stories…apparently he wasn’t available for this show. [Still,] I think it’s going to be a really good show.”

Tue, Apr 16, in L.A.:
8 pm RODRIGUEZ performs at The Orpheum Theatre, 842 S Broadway, L.A.; 213-749-5171. Yes, it’s the musician profiled in the OSCAR-winning film, “SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN,” playing his only L.A. show. Yes, he can still sing and play guitar, and stir the longings of the soul.
+
On OSCAR night, “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting music biopic and investigative journey of discovery by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL, won “Best Documentary Film.” It is the story of rejection, unknown fame for an artist living in obscurity, and remarkable rediscovery. It’s the story (so far) of remarkable singer-songwriter SIXTO RODRIGUEZ, a man for whom acclaim was delayed, but ultimately not denied. It’s a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.
+
On February 6, the Guide’s editor attended a special “Reel Talk” screening of “Searching for Sugar Man” that included a Q & A with director Bendjelloul. (The Guide ran a “News Extra” edition on February 5, alerting readers of the chance to attend that special screening.) The film had just won at the Director's Guild of America (DGA) the previous Friday night, capturing the “Best Feature Award” at the International Documentary Association's 2012 “IDA Documentary Awards” at DGA.
+
Musically, ithe film won the “Creative Recognition Award” for “Best Music” for RODRIGUEZ's original songs and BENDJELLOUL's additional score.
+
RODRIGUEZ’s story remains one of the music world’s most unusual tales, reaching back to the 1970s. An obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his oft-bootlegged cult album “Cold Fact” is the basis for “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting new documentary by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL. Light In The Attic Records, in partnership with Sony Legacy, are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from “Cold Fact” and its 1971 follow-up “Coming From Reality” – reissued in 2008 and 2009, respectively, by the Light In The Attic label.
+
The story of RODRIGUEZ the musician begins back in the late ‘60s, when he was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers DENNIS COFFEY and MIKE THEODORE. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, that record, “Cold Fact,” bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled “Coming From Reality,” produced by STEVE ROWLAND, fame eluded Rodriguez. So he drifted into obscurity, not knowing he was becoming the subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.
+
He was widely rumored to have died in bizarre ways, including a widely-believed version that had set himself on fire at the end of a performance for an audience that taked louder and louder over his singing. That was after he had faded into obscurity in the U.S. as just another singer-songwriter who failed to catch-on.
+
But, unknown to RODRIGUEZ, “Cold Fact” took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into the repressive apartheid-era South Africa, where everyone – not just black citizens – were subjected to curfews, bans against public gatherings, and strict regulation of what they could see, read, or hear on radio and television. “Cold Fact” was banned by the government, and that set then stage for the album to become a national phenomenon that transcended generations over the next two decades. It was the soundtrack for a resistance movement of liberal South African youth.
+
Meanwhile, back in Detroit, Rodriguez was working in construction and renovation, and disgusted with what he saw of government officials’ neglect of the poor and of deteriorating infrastructure, he even ran for mayor. All the while, Rodriguez remained totally unaware that he was not just a local folk hero, but had become an iconic household name – thousands of miles away, across an expanse of ocean.
+
Decades passed. Then, two South African fans, STEPHEN ‘SUGAR’ SEGERMAN and CRAIG BARTHOLOMEW-STRYDOM, set out to learn, once and for all, what had really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they’d heard. Their story forms the basis of “Searching for Sugar Man.”
+
Thanks to two obsessed fans who simply set out to learn the man's true fate, we have an OSCAR-winning, acclaimed chronicle about the rediscovery of Sixto Rodriguez, and a context for rediscovering a remarkable artist in the man himself.
Rodriguez said recently, “I describe myself as ‘musico-politico’,” adding, “I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time.”
+
His artist’s perspective is undiminished. That is evident as he continues, “Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like ‘We Want Jobs,’ and ‘Stop the War’ – I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa."

STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.
+
Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”
+
In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.
+
The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.
+
Tickets for STAGECOACH are “All-in pricing,” with a “What-you-see-is-what-you-pay,” no surprises policy that others need to emulate. Prices include all fees & shipping:
General Admission, $239 (limit of 6 per household)
Package P1, $1099 (limit of 2 per household)
Package P2, $799 (limit of 6 per household)
+
Add-on VIP Parking is $100, for those who don’t want to face the walk from the far-flung parking lots. The festival notes, “ADA reserved seats will be an option at purchase while supplies last.”

The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS and views of interest to artists everywhere, more specifically to musicians and the creative community, and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music, both traditional and innovative. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues, and schedules of performances in Southern California venues large and small. We cover workshops and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kids o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to proto blues… The Acoustic Americana Music Guide. We’re on it.
