FESTIVAL SPECIAL: April into May, LIVE MUSIC EVENTS, including Festivals, Concerts, Club Gigs, Coffee Houses, Workshops, and much more! April 26, 2013 edition

.
.
[Charming as it is, this edition is now OBSOLETE. It's been replaced by at least one updated edition, and is happily enjoying its retirement in the archive. Still accessible to you, of course. But get the LATEST by using the basic url, with no added extensions: www.acousticamericana.blogspot.com]

Here’s the Guide to an exciting weekend AND BEYOND – the first of TWO fresh editions, published not-quite simultaneously on April 26 & 27, 2013. In addition, a new edition of the Guide’s NEWS & REVIEWS will be along soon, at a separate click.
.
Here, you’ll find especially extensive FESTIVAL coverage with MORE details on MORE festivals, and even MORE acoustic and Americana music events added. There are astonishing numbers of CONCERTS; there are WORKSHOPS this weekend for artists, and – as you’ve come to expect – things you will find ONLY in the Guide.
.
So get ready for Take Off. No flight delays – because we don’t allow those induced shortages of the people necessary to make things happen – those contrived shortages that add to unemployment and stagnation. Not around HERE, where there’s NO shortage of musicians who make good ’n GREAT classic Folk-Americana and original Acoustic Renaissance music, at every destination where you might choose to land! (Nope, no flight delays here – you’ve come to a place where all of us know that “budget sequesters” are an insane shortcut to misery, continued funneling of money to the rich at the expense of everyone else, leaving even less money for arts & music in public schools, and in so many ways, starving culture and bringing societal collapse.) HERE, we support music and the arts, and help you find abundant examples of that.
+
Go dig the coins out of those old jeans, consider the Guide as your Boarding Pass, and let’s go!

He brought his sturdy-but-vulnerable voice to three # 1 country hits, “White Lightning” (1959), “She Thinks I Still Care” (1962), and “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool” (with Barbara Mandrell in 1981), and dozens and dozens of others.
+
RICHIE HAVENS, born January 21, 1941, died April 22, 2013. From influential rocker who played Woodstock to roots music folkie, his influence was powerful and will endure. Check him out at www.richiehavens.com/official_site/home.html

The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.
+
STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.
+
Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”
+
In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.
+
The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.
+
Tickets for STAGECOACH are available ONLY as full, three-day passes (whether or not you choose to attend all three days) and are “all-in pricing,” with a “what-you-see-is-what-you-pay,” no-surprises policy that others need to emulate. (The policies, not the prices.) Costs shown include all fees except parking and camping:
General admission, $239 (limit of 6 per household)
Package P1, $1099 (limit of 2 per household)
Package P2, $799 (limit of 6 per household)
+
Add-on VIP Parking is $100, for those who don’t want to face the walk from the far-flung parking lots. The festival notes, “ADA reserved seats will be an option at purchase while supplies last.”

8-11 pm "SAVE CHAIN REACTION" FUNDRAISING CONCERT at Rusty's Surf Ranch on the Santa Monica Pier to help preserve and protect the late, three-time Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist PAUL CONRAD's iconic 26-foot-tall nuclear mushroom cloud, a landmarked public art peace sculpture.
+
The special event is a locally organized fundraiser being coordinated mostly by high school students, but all ages are cordially invited. The event's musical lineup includes the NEW ROADS JAZZ BAND featuring KAYA MANDISSA, the LEFTEOUS SISTERS, THE SESSIONS STARS, and HALF BROTHER.
+
PAUL CONRAD gifted the iconic and monumental sculpture to the City of Santa Monica through a $250,000 philanthropic peace donation by an anonymous benefactor. It has been standing in the Santa Monica Civic Center since 1991 as a warning of the dangers of nuclear escalation. "Chain Reaction" became the City's first public art landmark when the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission voted unanimously to designate it a City Landmark at their July 9, 2012 public meeting. The City has given the Conrad family and community a very challenging task: Raise the $450,000 the City says is needed to restore it, and raise it by February, 2014.
+
The Campaign to Save Chain Reaction will be selling t-shirts, posters, books and more at the benefit event.

+
“The Passion of Joan of Arc,” released in 1927, is a truly remarkable film. This tale of the trial and execution of the famed Maid of Orléans is taken directly from the transcripts of her trial. The silent film was immediately hailed as a masterpiece – then was hacked to pieces by French censors and the Catholic Church. After a catastrophic fire destroyed the original negative, the film was thought lost to history. Carl Theodore Dreyer spent much of the rest of his career trying to find a copy of the lost film. In 1981, a complete print of Dreyer’s uncensored version was discovered in the closet of an Oslo mental institution. From that print, the film has been magnificently restored.
+
“The Passion of Joan of Arc” is one of the most shattering films to come out of the silent era. Pauline Kael wrote that Maria Falconetti’s portrayal of Joan “may be the finest performance ever recorded on film."
+
Tonight, it is presented with TOM PETERS' live musical scoring.
+
Tix, $15, $10 for seniors.

"Wherever you look, there is an air of magic. People are laughing and singing along with performers and reciting words that flowed from a collective soul, music and images from one mind, shared at this moment in a festival tribute to Bob Dylan. Noel Barr, music journalist, Random Lengths newspaper.

Forty of the L.A. area's most talented and accomplished musicians, including those in road bands that play arenas and top studio session players join hosts ANDY & RENEE and HARD RAIN to perform over 60 songs written by BOB DYLAN. Sun, May 19, FESTIVAL, in Agoura Hills:
Annual “TOPANGA BANJO FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL” at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is Southern California’s best one-day acoustic music festival, and the contest awards are coveted and prestigious. There are multiple entertainment stages of bluegrass, old-time, and traditional folk-Americana all day, in addition to live music for dancing, and the contest competitors. It always makes for tough choices, hour-by-hour, which acts to see. The perfectly picturesque site is an old western movie-set town with surrounding oak woodlands, administered by the National Park Service. The event features NPS displays, vendors of instruments and more, and truly superior festival food. Come early, because the vast parking lots filled-up in 2011 and latecomers were turned-away; it nearly happened again in 2012. Full details at www.topangabanjofiddle.org.

The popular bluegrass-themed festival is moving from its original location at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in a bittersweet decision for the family of event founder DON TUCKER, who passed away after suffering a stroke in October. The festival’s new home, Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, is a 150-acre venue with green grass stage area, bountiful trees and two stocked lakes for fishing. The park is surrounded by a variety of hotels and offers quick and easy access from the I-10 freeway. Check out the festival video at www.promo.huckfinn.com and get all the details, including early-bird discount tix, camping, etc, at www.huckfinn.com.

Under Don Tucker’s leadership, Huck Finn achieved multiple recognitions as one of the finest family-friendly music festivals in America. We expect his family will carry on with the same commitment and continue to produce a model event.
