Full new edition, LIVE MUSIC EVENTS: new & expanded info on Concerts, Festivals, & more, through April & BEYOND ~ April 13 edition, 2013

Coolest music story of the week: 79-year-old EVIE BRANAN (she pronounces it “evvie”) awoke from a five-year coma, and her first words were, “I want to go to a Bob Seger concert.” As she regained full awareness of her surroundings after half a decade of oblivion, she added, “I want to give him a big kiss and shake my booty for him.” Sure enough, Thursday night she did, indeed, “shake it, big time” (her words). Wondering how? Seems the Flint (Michigan) Journal newspaper had run a story about Evie’s awakening, and that was all it took to get her an invitation to attend BOB SEGER’s concert Thursday night in Michigan – with a backstage pass to spend some time with him. Through her sweet granny-like smile, she gushed, “It was my fifth Bob Seger concert. I had seen him four times before but I had never met him.” That is, she’d seen him perform before her real-life Rip Van Winkle bit. Her interview Friday morning on CNN ended with Evie answering host Don Lemon’s request to “sing part of your favorite Bob Seger song.” She said “I can’t remember the first part,” then went into the key lyrics, “I’m older now, but I’m still runnin’ against the wind.”

IN MEMORIUM:
• Hugely inspirational comic genius JONATHAN WINTERS, who brought a repertoire of memorable characters to his unscripted one-man stage show, TV appearances, and his own, often improvisational, TV show, died Thursday night at his home in Montecito (CA) at age 87; he was also known for movie roles, including “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.”
• Ballerina MARIA TALLCHIEF, daughter of an Oklahoma oil family who grew up on an Indian reservation, became the muse and wife of choreographer GEORGE BALANCHINE and dazzled the 20th century dance world, died Thursday in Chicago at age 88.

5) Saturday’s FESTIVALS:
.
Sat, Apr 13; Mon-Sat, Apr 8-13, pseudo-festival,
FREE, in Long Beach:
11 am-sunset 49th annual "CONGRESSIONAL CUP YACHT RACE" features free concerts, up-close racing action, and more, all FREE at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier, #15 39th Pl, Long Beach. After-hours music goes ’til late at night, Friday & Saturday.
+
The brings a beer garden, rum bar, and seafood and barbecue stations to the pier. Some money spent on those items benefits children through local nonprofit Young Horizons.
+
You're so close to the sailboat action you can shout to the sailors between races. The masts almost brush you as each pair of boats race by. Top ranked sailors from around the world compete in this, the longest-running sailing Match Race in North America. View the action from the "Congressional Cup Stadium" on the pier with bleacher seating, and snack bar and more available.
+
There will be 10 skippers, who compete round-robin, going head-to-head against one another in pairs to rack-up points for advancement. They include Great Britain’s Ian Williams, ranked #1 in the world, who is going for a three-peat at the Congressional Cup. The others, and their rankings, are Laurie Jury (New Zealand, #7), Taylor Canfield (U.S. Virgin Islands, #8), Eric Monnin (Switzerland, #13), Simone Ferrarese (Italy, #15), Jordan Reece (Australia, #16), Mathieu Richard (France, #18), Adam Minoprio (New Zealand, #217), and Ed Baird (USA, unranked, but a former winner). The 10th skipper is the winner of the Ficker Cup, determined by a race the preceding weekend.
+
The Congressional Cup winner receives the event's signature Crimson Blazer and the largest share of a $60,000 purse.
+
As for the music? It's been hard to track-down, despite featured advertising that it's included. Saturday night is a concert by BOXCAR SEVEN (rhythm & blues, soul revue). Other bands perform throughout the event, though it seems to include multiple genres , and sometimes it's deejays instead. But the daily race viewing can't be beat, and it's all FREE.
+
More on the race (but nothing on the music) is at www.thecongressionalcup.com.
+

Tue, Apr 16, in L.A.:
8 pm RODRIGUEZ performs at The Orpheum Theatre, 842 S Broadway, L.A.; 213-749-5171. Yes, it’s SIXTO RODRIGUEZ, aka RODRIGUEZ, the musician profiled in the OSCAR-winning film, “SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN,” playing his only L.A. show. Yes, he can still sing and play guitar, and stir the longings of the soul.
+
On OSCAR night, “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting music biopic and investigative journey of discovery by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL, won “Best Documentary Film.” It is the story of rejection, unknown fame for an artist living in obscurity, and remarkable rediscovery. It’s the story (so far) of remarkable singer-songwriter SIXTO RODRIGUEZ, a man for whom acclaim was delayed, but ultimately not denied. It’s a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.
+
On February 6, the Guide’s editor attended a special “Reel Talk” screening of “Searching for Sugar Man” that included a Q & A with director Bendjelloul. (The Guide ran a “News Extra” edition on February 5, alerting readers of the chance to attend that special screening.) The film had just won at the Director's Guild of America (DGA) the previous Friday night, capturing the “Best Feature Award” at the International Documentary Association's 2012 “IDA Documentary Awards” at DGA.
+
Musically, the film won the “Creative Recognition Award” for “Best Music” for RODRIGUEZ's original songs and BENDJELLOUL's additional score.
+
RODRIGUEZ’s story remains one of the music world’s most unusual tales, reaching back to the 1970s. An obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his oft-bootlegged cult album “Cold Fact” is the basis for “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting new documentary by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL. Light In The Attic Records, in partnership with Sony Legacy, are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from “Cold Fact” and its 1971 follow-up “Coming From Reality” – reissued in 2008 and 2009, respectively, by the Light In The Attic label.
+
The story of RODRIGUEZ the musician begins back in the late ‘60s, when he was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers DENNIS COFFEY and MIKE THEODORE. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, that record, “Cold Fact,” bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled “Coming From Reality,” produced by STEVE ROWLAND, fame eluded Rodriguez. So he drifted into obscurity, not knowing he was becoming the subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.
+
He was widely rumored to have died in bizarre ways, including a widely-believed version that had set himself on fire at the end of a performance for an audience that taked louder and louder over his singing. That was after he had faded into obscurity in the U.S. as just another singer-songwriter who failed to catch-on.
+
But, unknown to RODRIGUEZ, “Cold Fact” took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into the repressive apartheid-era South Africa, where everyone – not just black citizens – were subjected to curfews, bans against public gatherings, and strict regulation of what they could see, read, or hear on radio and television. “Cold Fact” was banned by the government, and that set then stage for the album to become a national phenomenon that transcended generations over the next two decades. It was the soundtrack for a resistance movement of liberal South African youth.
+
Meanwhile, back in Detroit, Rodriguez was working in construction and renovation, and disgusted with what he saw of government officials’ neglect of the poor and of deteriorating infrastructure, he even ran for mayor. All the while, Rodriguez remained totally unaware that he was not just a local folk hero, but had become an iconic household name – thousands of miles away, across an expanse of ocean.
+
Decades passed. Then, two South African fans, STEPHEN ‘SUGAR’ SEGERMAN and CRAIG BARTHOLOMEW-STRYDOM, set out to learn, once and for all, what had really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they’d heard. Their story forms the basis of “Searching for Sugar Man.”
+
Thanks to two obsessed fans who simply set out to learn the man's true fate, we have an OSCAR-winning, acclaimed chronicle about the rediscovery of Sixto Rodriguez, and a context for rediscovering a remarkable artist in the man himself.

Rodriguez said recently, “I describe myself as ‘musico-politico’,” adding, “I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time.”
+
His artist’s perspective is undiminished. That is evident as he continues, “Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like ‘We Want Jobs,’ and ‘Stop the War’ – I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa."

“LONESOME TRAVELER” returns for a 2013 run at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura. It’s a musical event that takes audiences on a journey down the rivers and streams of American Folk Music -- from the hills of Appalachia to the nightclubs of San Francisco and New York; from the 1920s to the 1960s. Written and directed by Rubicon’s Artistic Director James O’Neil, with Musical Direction and Arrangements by Dan Wheetman.
+
"Tom Dooley," "Goodnight Irene," "Puff, the Magic Dragon," "Blowin' in the Wind," and "This Land is Your Land." These songs remind us of a time when music brought us together; when it changed us. Lonesome Traveler is a World Premier theatrical event that takes us from the backwoods of Appalachia to the nightclubs of New York and San Francisco; from the mid 1920s to the mid 1960s. Experience the music that made history and the history that made music. Rubicon Artistic Director James O'Neil directs a seven-person cast of singer/instrumentalists. More when we know it.

The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.
+
STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.
+
Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”
+
In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.
+
The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.
+
Tickets for STAGECOACH are “All-in pricing,” with a “What-you-see-is-what-you-pay,” no surprises policy that others need to emulate. Prices include all fees & shipping:
General Admission, $239 (limit of 6 per household)
Package P1, $1099 (limit of 2 per household)
Package P2, $799 (limit of 6 per household)
+
Add-on VIP Parking is $100, for those who don’t want to face the walk from the far-flung parking lots. The festival notes, “ADA reserved seats will be an option at purchase while supplies last.”

Sun, May 19, FESTIVAL, in Agoura Hills:
Annual “TOPANGA BANJO FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL” at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is Southern California’s best one-day acoustic music festival, and the contest awards are coveted and prestigious. There are multiple entertainment stages of bluegrass, old-time, and traditional folk-Americana all day, in addition to live music for dancing, and the contest competitors. It always makes for tough choices, hour-by-hour, which acts to see. The perfectly picturesque site is an old western movie-set town with surrounding oak woodlands, administered by the National Park Service. The event features NPS displays, vendors of instruments and more, and truly superior festival food. +
The popular bluegrass-themed festival is moving from its original location at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in a bittersweet decision for the family of event founder DON TUCKER, who passed away after suffering a stroke in October. The festival’s new home, Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, is a 150-acre venue with green grass stage area, bountiful trees and two stocked lakes for fishing. The park is surrounded by a variety of hotels and offers quick and easy access from the I-10 freeway. Check out the festival video at www.promo.huckfinn.com and get all the details, including early-bird discount tix, camping, etc, at www.huckfinn.com.

Under Don Tucker’s leadership, Huck Finn achieved multiple recognitions as one of the finest family-friendly music festivals in America. We expect his family will carry on with the same commitment and continue to produce a model event.

  1. Can't thank you enough for the story of the old lady coming out of the 5 year coma and right away wanting to go to a concert and "shake her booty"!!! Great of Bob Seger to spend time with her. I sent that to friends last night and everyone wrote back about it. Hope I am that with it just getting up any morning, especially if I make it to 79! Go Evvie!
