Here is this edition, complete, from the archive...
.
LATE ADDITION:
.
We received a last-minute promo from the presenters of the "KOFFEEHOUSE SUNDAY SESSIONS" that we want to share for its entertainment as well as its informational value. Their 6 pm event was already included in the Guide, but without their lineup.
+
Their message says, in part, "It is the first Sunday in April which means the 2 hour season premiere of 'Mad Men,' the first weekend of baseball, the final stretch in the NBA and NHL regular seasons, and a one-day break (pardon the pun) from CBS' coverage of Kevin Ware in a cast. In addition to Kevin Ware's gruesome compound fracture, the media is finally giving some coverage to North Korea's threats of all-out nuclear war against the United States. In fact, Pyongyang is really stepping up its threats this weekend as they released 10 more photos of Kim Jong Un looking through binoculars in his khaki pantsuit."
+
They continue, "April also means a new slate of Koffeehouse Sunday Sessions showcases at The Charleston in Santa Monica (details below)! [In the Guide.] This month, we're excited to feature some of L.A.'s most talented artists including Sonia Rao, Denny White, Emily Elbert, Jesse MacLeod and Mike Burke." We included their second paragraph because they hadn't revealed that lineup at presstime. We included their first paragraph because they often have a way of distilling some of the essence of what's infatuated and infested the media in the foregoing week.

Here's the full edition as originally published on Friday:

• There’s PLENTY to do and see and hear this weekend, including catching KELLY'S LOT, a solid BLUES BAND, early, before the SANTA ANITA DERBY, when the humans race a 5 & 10 K ahead of the horses taking the track at beautiful, garden-like Santa Anita Park in Arcadia; that’s followed by the all-day festival of food trucks (the Ragin' Cajun's food is dee-licious), 11 races with the thoroughbreds, and a loud ‘n’ rowdy (KROQ-sponsored) rock band between races (but you can go, have fun there cheap, and wholly avoid that last part).

• Saturday brings a fun pseudo-FESTIVAL of storytellers in Claremont, commencing at 2 pm, and a single-evening HARMONY A CAPPELLA FESTIVAL.

• Make plans to attend one of Tuesday’s big-deal events, either the “CARL PERKINS BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE,” an all-star show with ROSIE FLORES, JAMES INTVELD, BILLY VERA, DAVE STUCKEY, BIG SANDY & HIS FLY-RITE BOYS, OMAR & THE STRING POPPERS, CARL SONNY LEYLAND, and more, commencing at 8 pm at Viva Cantina, next to the L.A. Equestrian Center in Burbank;
- OR -
ROSS ALTMAN leads “REBELS WITH A CAUSE: A TRIBUTE TO PAUL ROBESON, MARIAN ANDERSON, & PHIL OCHS," 7-10 pm, at The Talking Stick in Venice
(See the listings for both these shows.)

• We’re returning to our too-long-absent BROADCAST & WEB FOLK-AMERICANA RADIO listings of shows that feature performance-interviews. It’ll grow, over time, as we receive word from readers and radio hosts and include them. What we have, so far, is in this edition. The Guide’s Music-on-TV listings in the separate edition, “TUNEFUL TEEVEE,” are on hiatus

• Now, on to The Guide’s presentation of LIVE MUSIC EVENTS through the weekend and beyond ~

2) Saturday’s FESTIVALS:
.
Sat, Apr 6, pseudo festival, in Claremont:
2-4 pm 9th Annual “SPRING STORYTELLING CONCERT” with performances by storytellers NICK SMITH, ANGELA LLOYD, JOHN ST. CLAIR, RON CHICK, & ADRIEN LOWERY, presented by INLAND VALLEY STORYTELLERS, at Claremont Friends Meetinghouse, 727 W Harrison Av, Claremont.
+
Storyteller and Caltech Folk Music Society concert co-producer NICK SMITH tells the Guide, “The Inland Valley Storytellers put on two shows a year in the Claremont area, with members from a larger roster. The spring one moves around, and the fall one is normally at the Folk Music Center the Saturday before Thanksgiving, in honor of Dorothy Chase. Most people don’t know that she was both a painter and a performing storyteller, back when she was running the store. Of these tellers, you know me. Angela Lloyd is even better than I am, and I don’t say that lightly. Seriously, she’s one of the few people who can get away with playing spoons or a washboard in the middle of telling a story. She plays several instruments, a lot of which she’s bought at the Folk Music Center over the years. The others cover a wide range of styles and backgrounds. I’m only sorry that we’re missing our other Ron, a retired minister who tells the most outrageous New England stories…apparently he wasn’t available for this show. [Still,] I think it’s going to be a really good show.”

This finger-picking guitarist has performed and studied all over the world; he has crafted an unbelievable fusion of classical and jazz, with ethereal Eastern influences, Spanish and Latin elements, with strains of Western folk."

Another venue’s booker adds, “Claude produces some of the sweetest, simply complex music and song I've had the joy of experiencing and I'd be heartened if you'd join us here at the Gallery to share this rare experience.”

Tue, Apr 16, in L.A.:
8 pm RODRIGUEZ performs at The Orpheum Theatre, 842 S Broadway, L.A.; 213-749-5171. Yes, it’s the musician profiled in the OSCAR-winning film, “SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN,” playing his only L.A. show. Yes, he can still sing and play guitar, and stir the longings of the soul.
+
On OSCAR night, “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting music biopic and investigative journey of discovery by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL, won “Best Documentary Film.” It is the story of rejection, unknown fame for an artist living in obscurity, and remarkable rediscovery. It’s the story (so far) of remarkable singer-songwriter SIXTO RODRIGUEZ, a man for whom acclaim was delayed, but ultimately not denied. It’s a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.
+
On February 6, the Guide’s editor attended a special “Reel Talk” screening of “Searching for Sugar Man” that included a Q & A with director Bendjelloul. (The Guide ran a “News Extra” edition on February 5, alerting readers of the chance to attend that special screening.) The film had just won at the Director's Guild of America (DGA) the previous Friday night, capturing the “Best Feature Award” at the International Documentary Association's 2012 “IDA Documentary Awards” at DGA.
+
Musically, ithe film won the “Creative Recognition Award” for “Best Music” for RODRIGUEZ's original songs and BENDJELLOUL's additional score.
+
RODRIGUEZ’s story remains one of the music world’s most unusual tales, reaching back to the 1970s. An obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his oft-bootlegged cult album “Cold Fact” is the basis for “Searching for Sugar Man,” the riveting new documentary by filmmaker MALIK BENDJELLOUL. Light In The Attic Records, in partnership with Sony Legacy, are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from “Cold Fact” and its 1971 follow-up “Coming From Reality” – reissued in 2008 and 2009, respectively, by the Light In The Attic label.
+
The story of RODRIGUEZ the musician begins back in the late ‘60s, when he was discovered in a Detroit bar by renowned producers DENNIS COFFEY and MIKE THEODORE. They recorded a 1970 album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, that record, “Cold Fact,” bombed, and despite the release of a second LP, entitled “Coming From Reality,” produced by STEVE ROWLAND, fame eluded Rodriguez. So he drifted into obscurity, not knowing he was becoming the subject to some fantastic rumors of a dramatic onstage death.
+
He was widely rumored to have died in bizarre ways, including a widely-believed version that had set himself on fire at the end of a performance for an audience that taked louder and louder over his singing. That was after he had faded into obscurity in the U.S. as just another singer-songwriter who failed to catch-on.
+
But, unknown to RODRIGUEZ, “Cold Fact” took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into the repressive apartheid-era South Africa, where everyone – not just black citizens – were subjected to curfews, bans against public gatherings, and strict regulation of what they could see, read, or hear on radio and television. “Cold Fact” was banned by the government, and that set then stage for the album to become a national phenomenon that transcended generations over the next two decades. It was the soundtrack for a resistance movement of liberal South African youth.
+
Meanwhile, back in Detroit, Rodriguez was working in construction and renovation, and disgusted with what he saw of government officials’ neglect of the poor and of deteriorating infrastructure, he even ran for mayor. All the while, Rodriguez remained totally unaware that he was not just a local folk hero, but had become an iconic household name – thousands of miles away, across an expanse of ocean.
+
Decades passed. Then, two South African fans, STEPHEN ‘SUGAR’ SEGERMAN and CRAIG BARTHOLOMEW-STRYDOM, set out to learn, once and for all, what had really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they’d heard. Their story forms the basis of “Searching for Sugar Man.”
+
Thanks to two obsessed fans who simply set out to learn the man's true fate, we have an OSCAR-winning, acclaimed chronicle about the rediscovery of Sixto Rodriguez, and a context for rediscovering a remarkable artist in the man himself.

Rodriguez said recently, “I describe myself as ‘musico-politico’,” adding, “I was born and bred in Detroit, four blocks from the city center. Back then, I was influenced by the urban sounds that were going on around me all the time.”
+
His artist’s perspective is undiminished. That is evident as he continues, “Music is art and art is a cultural force. As far as my work from Detroit comparing to the South African Apartheid, the similarities echo. The placards of the 1970s in the United States read things like ‘We Want Jobs,’ and ‘Stop the War’ – I was looking at the music from a working class perspective that was relevant, as it turns out, to the kids in South Africa."

The Acoustic Americana Music Guide has consistently celebrated the inclusive booking policies of this event. Sure, the Nashville pop-country award-winners are there, BUT, there is always a fine representation from the best of the Folk-Americana, Bluegrass, Western Music, and Alt-Country / Honky-Tonk world. With “country” radio so embedded in pop-country, this festival is a joy for Traditional Country and Folk-Americana fans alike, and with multiple stages, you can find your niche and ensconce yourself, or wander and explore other auditory horizons.
+
STAGECOACH has come a long way in a few short years. There are “Buy Now” and layaway options for tickets, and Stagecoach now has a BBQ Competition, an RV Resort, campgrounds with jamming and organized karaoke, money-saving “family passes” to the festival, and plenty more.
+
Beyond the jam packed musical lineup, there are other ACTIVITIES and fun things to do and see while at the festival. Inside the venue, you’ll find a FERRIS WHEEL, with fabulous views of the festival - additional cost may apply. A WIFI CENTER will offer web access with computers and printers available. In the festival’s Campgrounds, they organize karaoke in the camping activities tent, and there is a “STAGECOACH KARAOKE STATION.” If hearing all that nonprofessional catterwalling stresses you, they offer sanctioned professional MASSAGE ($1 per minute, chair massage). Even without The Who, you can show your prowess at Pinball and win daily VIP upgrades & merch. In addition to the live music, Country DJs offer tunes on the dance floor. Campers will have free SUPERMARKET SHUTTLES for anything you “can't find at the general store or the farmers market.”
+
In addition, there are FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES for the kids, and a WORLD RENOWNED BBQ, with 30 national BBQ teams cooking 24/7 in the hopes of being picked as Grand Champion in the BARBEQUE CONTEST.
+
The festival website offers organized carpooling and a CARPOOL CONVOY signup. Once you’re there, their RECYCLING PROGRAM has an economic incentive, letting you earn free water, wristband upgrades and more by participating.
+
Tickets for STAGECOACH are “All-in pricing,” with a “What-you-see-is-what-you-pay,” no surprises policy that others need to emulate. Prices include all fees & shipping:
General Admission, $239 (limit of 6 per household)
Package P1, $1099 (limit of 2 per household)
Package P2, $799 (limit of 6 per household)
+
Add-on VIP Parking is $100, for those who don’t want to face the walk from the far-flung parking lots. The festival notes, “ADA reserved seats will be an option at purchase while supplies last.”

  1. Really don't know how you do this. There is always so much here! All I know is I could never find more than a little of this by surfing sites. We have discovered about a dozen bands and solo artists on this site and it's safe to say we would never ever have known about them from any other site. It makes all the difference that you tell us about a group we have never heard of. If it was just a name and a place we would never spend money to take s chance on them. But your paragraphs about them makes us want to go. So far, we have never been disappointed. ~ Ange & Phil

  2. Thank you for including storytellers. I got tickets for the Claremont Saturday show when you first listed it. Seeing storytellers workand has made my songwriting much stronger. I started going to see storytellers and paying attention to how they unpack a story and I have learned a lot!

  3. The Grammy museum events you list are wonderful. I have been to over a dozen. Even though I got on their mailing list after about the third time I went, it helps when you write about them, so I can decide in a hurry when to go.

  4. We are writing to thank you guys for the Santa Anita Racetrack recommendation. It was a GREAT day off at a fun place for very little money! The Mariachi Band and costumed Dancers including charming little kid Dancers by the big entrance fountain were so good we stayed there a long time before going to watch a race and going through the walking tunnel to the festival of food trucks and the band playing there. We were never aware that anything like this happens with horse racing.
