LATE ADDITION:
Tue, Apr 23, FREE, at USC:
7 pm "TSIGAN: THE GYPSY POEM" by CECILIA WOLOCH, with music and dance performances, in Bovard Auditorium, on the campus of USC in University Park, L.A.
+
Admission is free and open to everyone. Make reservations online.
+
We know, our folk-Americana readers enjoy Djangostyle gypsy swing/jazz, but are not into what's broadly labelled as "world music." But here's a chance to see the other side of the equation of the origins of Americana-gypsy-swing.
+
Called Gypsy, Tsigan, Gitane, Cygane, and Zigeuner, the Roma people have wandered the world for a thousand years. They’ve been romanticized but also brutally persecuted.
+
It's explored in this multimedia performance based on "Tsigan: The Gypsy Poem," an acclaimed book-length poem by USC professor and poet Cecilia Woloch. The work intertwines Woloch's personal journey of identity with the larger forces that have shaped the Roma people’s fate and fortunes.
+
The performance will include Flamenco music and dance by José Cortés, Ethan Margolis and Cihtli Ocampo, celebrating the lyrical fire of the Gypsy spirit.
+
The evening will be introduced by former California Poet Laureate Carol Muske-Dukes. A discussion will follow moderated by Stephen D. Smith, executive director of the USC Shoah Foundation, and featuring Romani activist and scholar Dr. Ian Hancock from the University of Texas.
+
Free with online reservations, and learn more, on their website, www.usc.edu/visionsandvoices. Any remaining tickets will be available at the event check-in beginning at 6 pm.

BRUCE FORMAN, artist-in-residence at USC's Thornton School of Music, brings his beyond-swing western bebop band Cow Bop to "dust up HERB ALPERT's swanky joint." Bruce says, "Most of you know us from less formal locales, but we are excited about this one, and I think we all need to dress up (western preferred) and take ourselves out on the town. There will be a cover and I suggest getting reservations, have dinner, the food is happening."
+
He continues, "This conjures up the last scenes of Blazing Saddles to me -- where the fight scene spilled out onto the lot and interrupted the musical and the commissary."
+
Egads, don't tell Herb Alpert. Bruce says, "Let's make this one a night we'll never forget. We are working up some special material and we'll have the usual swing herding, tune wranglin' and genre-bustin' that have made us the most popular band in our price range!"
+
Door prizes "from the Cow Bop merch manufacturing plant" are yours to claim by printing-out or showing this listing on your phone. That, and paying the venue's cover, are all you need to redeem your souvenir of the evening.
+
Prompt reservations advised. Two shows, 7:30 & 9 pm. "Who knows, maybe even Mel Brooks will show?" adds Bruce.

+
GT, along with his singing and songwriting, breeds ranch-raised Quarter Horses, making his home under the shadows of the Crazy Mountains in Montana. Living and working in the ranching community, he writes and sings about the West as he sees it. From the cold of the Montana winters to the damp, hard rock of the mine, to the smells of sage and horse sweat, it's the grit and joy and feel of the west of today and yesterday.
