.
First up, an update to our coverage of
FESTIVALS!
.
Check the Guide’s write-ups (use our site's "search" function at the top of the “full web edition” page, or scroll to find ’em by the dates). Be sure you get tix before they sell-out – some will! We cover a LOT of details, but sometimes the link for a festival’s site has esoterica we didn’t have at press time, like provisions for jamming, where the best jams happen, early-bird discounts, volunteer opportunities that get you in free, extra-fare VIP seating, camping or lodgings, reserving shuttles / transport to avoid parking hassles, and more.

LATE ADDITIONS are added here, up -front. Check them from time to time. (If it's tardy, but good, this is where you'll find it.)

LATE ADDED DETAILS...
Sun, May 5, FESTIVAL, in L.A.:
3 pm 2nd Annual "LOS LOBOS CINCO DE MAYO FESTIVAL" featuring LOS LOBOS with ROBERT RANDOLPH, LOS SUPER 7, WILLIE G (of Thee Midnighters), plus special guests KINKY, EL CHICANO, and PEDRO TORRES Y SU MARIACHI on the main stage, plus, on the Greek Theatre Plaza Stage, LA SANTA CECELIA, LOS FABULOCOS, and MAKING MOVIES, at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Av, in Griffith Park (Los Angeles); www.greektheatrela.com.
+
The Greek Theatre kicks-off its 2013 season with hometown favorites Los Lobos and their 2nd Annual "Cinco de Mayo Festival" -- Plaza Stage acts begin at 3 pm, main stage show starts at 6:30 pm.
+
More than three decades have passed since LOS LOBOS released their debut album, "Just Another Band from East L.A." Since then they've repeatedly disproven that title — Los Lobos isn't "just another" anything, but rather a band that has consistently evolved artistically while never losing sight of their humble roots.
+
For "Tin Can Trust" — Los Lobos' first release for Shout! Factory and first collection of new original material in four years — the venerable quintet reconnected directly with those roots by returning to East L.A. and recording at Manny's Estudio, "in a rundown neighborhood," says Los Lobos songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Louie Pérez.
+
A rare example of longevity in a volatile music world that stresses style over substance, Los Lobos' lineup has remained uninterrupted since 1984, when saxophonist / keyboardist Steve Berlin joined original members Pérez, Hidalgo, Rosas and Lozano, each of whom had been there since the beginning in 1973.
+
A key other band performing is EL CHICANO. They, too, exploded on to the music scene from the streets of East Los Angeles long ago. Over a 40 year span, the group has garnered 5 Gold records and was voted #1 Jazz group of 1970. With ten Albums of their own recorded, El Chicano is featured on over 50 compilation works, as well as having their music featured on many major motion picture soundtracks.
+
EL CHICANO remains a group very much aware of their roots and giving back to the community. As such, they have been recognized many times for their contributions to community and charities, especially those that help children and promote the arts.
+
There will be some antithesis of acoustic and roots-based music. Also performing is GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY-nominated electronica quintet KINKY from Monterrey, Mexico.
+
Tix, $69.50, $59.50, $39.50, $25.

+
Cliff Wagner serves-up Americana just the way you like it: originals with soul. As if Levon Helm, Bill Monroe , & Jimmy Martin met in a bar and had a few drinks. He's just completed his run of musical stage shows with "PARADISE: A DIVINE BLUEGRASS COMEDY," and he tells us, "It was a huge success . We're working on round 2."

The 100-voice choral ensemble is celebrating 60 years. Since its formation in 1953, the Choir has been performing concerts of classical, sacred, folk, patriotic and popular choral music throughout Southern California. The Choir is directed by Jan Bills, long time member.

+
The Swing Riots are a Los Angeles-based "acoustic quirktette" performing "an irreverant gumbo" of Gypsy & Creole Jazz, Klezmer & Romanian Horas, Parisian Musette and "the occasional wild card thrown in for good measure."
+
The band's six core members have played for decades in everything from Balkan dance bands to traditional Swing groups.
+
"The SWING RIOTS Quirktette specialize in that crossroad where early, string based jazz and traditional folk music intersect," playing many of the well known Gypsy Jazz standards recorded by the great Romany guitar and violin players of the 1920s & 30s. Then they dig deeper, performing traditional eastern European folk melodies in a swing setting. As such, you will hear traditional Romany, Russian, Yiddish Klezmer and Romanian Horas. +
Add to that some of the earliest American jazz standards, many of which were derived from Creole and African-American folk songs in their original forms, not often heard today.

9:30 pm I SEE HAWKS IN L.A. play "Total Request Live" plus an acoustic opening set by DAVE GLEASON, at the Cinema Bar, 3967 Sepulveda Bl, Culver City; 310-390-1328.
+
It's a special farewell show this week for the Hawks' last "First Fridays" residency at the Cinema, before they cross the pond to play Europe for the summer.
+
Paul, Rob, and Shawn -- the Hawks -- will take you on a trip back through the mid-2000s with "Hawks Total Request Live," telling us, "We will try our best to play any requests off all Hawks records."
+
Here's how it works: 1. Write your request down and toss it in the hat. 2. ALL Hawks songs are eligible. 3. The band will pull the requests out of the hat, at random, and play them through the evening. Tgey note, "You and fate will decide the set list!" 4. They add, "Fun and errors will be had!"
+
Dave Gleason starts the night with an acoustic set at 9:30 pm.
+
Then, I See Hawks hit the stage around 10:30 "and try their best to fulfill your requests." More at www.iseehawks.com.
+
No cover. The venue is small and seating (on barstools) is competitive. Be sure to bring $ for the musicians' tip jar.

Sat, May 4, in Antelope Valley (Palmdale):
7 pm ALLIE TAYLOR, local fave they call their "Palmtucky Gal," plus CONNOR "SULLY" SULLIVAN opening, at this week’s “LIVE ACOUSTIC MUSIC” show at Butler's Coffee, 40125 10th St West, Suite I, Palmdale 93551; 661-272-9530.
+
KEVIN BURTON SMITH, "Butlers Coffee Music Guy," says, "We're welcoming back one of our favourite acts, ALLIE TAYLOR, and she's bringing along a classmate from the Los Angeles Music Academy, and he'll be opening the night."
+
Kevin continues, "A Cali Boy through and through, singer-songwriter CONNOR "SULLY" SULLIVAN has ping-ponged back and forth from one end of the Golden State to the other. Currently encamped in North Hollywood, he embarks regularly on musical forays deep into the heartland of music lovers everywhere. If you had to pin him down, he'd say folk-pop, but that's sort of like nailing Jello to the wall.
+
He quotes Connor as saying, "Sharing my songs with an audience is a dream come true. If I can make one person feel emotion that they could not do on their own, then I have done my job." Kevin adds, "Plus, Allie vouches for him!"
+
Connor is followed by a welcome back to hometown hero and "Palmtucky gal" ALLIE TAYLOR, doing a solo performance after a long absence from the venue.
+
Kevin says, "It's getting a little weird calling her 'Butler's little sweetheart,' because she's done a lot of growing up, both personally and musically since she first played Butler's way back when (on our very first music night over four and a half years ago). She was just a wee little thing, all big Bambi-in-the-headlights eyes, but even then she had a voice that could make your heart skip a beat."
+
He adds, "That was then and this is now, and she's a confident and formidable musical power of nature, as adept at belting out country-rock barnstormers with her band SHOTGUN GRANNY as she is crooning slow burn jazz standards or wringing every bit of emotion out of some indie rock chip off the old block. I'm not even sure what she'll be singing or doing this evening, but like Kasper Gutman says, "It's bound to be something astounding!"

"Wherever you look, there is an air of magic. People are laughing and singing along with performers and reciting words that flowed from a collective soul, music and images from one mind, shared at this moment in a festival tribute to Bob Dylan. Andy Hill & Renee Safier have created an annual event with a stellar line-up of local artists who will be singing praises to the bard of rock." – B. Noel Barr, music journalist, Random Lengths newspaper.
+
Forty of the L.A. area's most talented and accomplished musicians, including those in road bands that play arenas and top studio session players join hosts ANDY & RENEE and HARD RAIN to perform over 60 songs written by BOB DYLAN. Rene says, "We are excited about our new venue, and we know it's going to be a great day! What started out as a small once-a-year backyard party where a loose conglomerate of close friends would take turns performing Dylan classics all day and well into the night (or until the cops came), has evolved into a full-blown music festival attended by hundreds of fans.YOU should be one of them! Please tell your friends, and encourage them to attend this special event."

Sun, May 5, in Altadena:
3 pm KEN O’ MALLEY brings "A Tribute to the Women of Ireland," a specially-themed matinee show for an early Mother's Day, at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001; reservations 626-798-6236 (10 am-10 pm); venue phone 626-398-7917; info www.coffeegallery.com. (“the venue named by the Guide’s editor, writing in FolkWorks, as L.A.’s best intimate acoustic listening room venue”).
+
From the quiet strength of his mother, who raised seven children and organized a household of nine members, to famous and infamous Irish women who left their mark on history, this show pays tribute to many of these women through Ken’s engaging stories and songs. It's a true testament to the women of Ireland, steering paths through a male dominated society with their loyalty to family and their connection with the land, many, such as Grace O’Malley, becoming bold leaders of men.
+
Ken recently returned from leading a tour of Ireland, so he will surely have especially good and current tales to tell.
+
Whether singing a passionate ballad, playing a solo on the mandolin, or explaining the gloriously sad history of Erin his homeland, Ken O’Malley is all-in, wide open to the world, and as true as an arrow’s flight. Ken’s fine tenor voice could carry him through a show all alone, but he backs himself beautifully on guitar and mandolin.
+
With songs in both English and Irish Gaelic, a Ken O'Malley performance is suitable for all ages and has something for everyone. As one longtime fan says, “the songs Ken sings touch all of us, Irish or not, to the very core of the human heart."

It always makes for tough choices, hour-by-hour, which acts to see. +
The popular bluegrass-themed festival is moving from its original location at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in a bittersweet decision for the family of event founder DON TUCKER, who passed away after suffering a stroke in October. The festival’s new home, Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, is a 150-acre venue with green grass stage area, bountiful trees and two stocked lakes for fishing. The park is surrounded by a variety of hotels and offers quick and easy access from the I-10 freeway. Check out the festival video at www.promo.huckfinn.com and get all the details, including early-bird discount tix, camping, etc, at www.huckfinn.com.
+
Under Don Tucker’s leadership, Huck Finn achieved multiple recognitions as one of the finest family-friendly music festivals in America. We expect his family will carry on with the same commitment and continue to produce a model event.

We met one of your writers at the festival at the Arboretum. We had no idea there were 9 more festivals happening at the same time!!! My son and I went over to the Eclectic Music Festival thanks to finding out about all these things from a guy who writes for you. I have my son every other weekend and we always want to find things to do togethet we will both enjoy. I dragged him to tbe Arboretum and he fell in love with a young band there called the Show Ponies. We both really liked them. Then we met your writer and leaned about the other ebents. We were both thrilled with the music at the Eclectic Festival. He spent Sunday finding youtube music by many bands on your site, and playing them for me. I feel like we have this whole new world to share on our weekends togethet. I never knew all this existed. We are going to the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle event un two weeks and he is all excited. Thank you and please tell your writer he is helping get a father and young teenage son closer together.I think I may be paying for mandilin or violin lessons soon!!
ReplyDeleteWow. Thank you very much for sharing your story-in-progress! You and your have Indeed discovered a rich musical world. There are many young and exquisitely talented musicians, and that's always a major factor with young 'uns becoming fans and deciding they want to devote time to becoming a music maker. We recommend you two go see the Salty Suites perform. Search.the band name, and search band members Scott Gates and Chelsea Williams. A talented young solo player to go see is Phoebe Bridgers. And of course, you will find info on themthe and PLENTY more -- including more festivals-- if you both keep reading the Guide!
DeleteThis site is amazing!!! I met your people at the Sierra Madre Art Fair and they told me about it. I went over to South Pas Eclectic Music Festival when Sierra Madre was closing 4 the night. Kara Grainger and Quetzal both have a new fan! Now I have ur site as a favorite!!"
ReplyDeleteWe check all the concert list sites and get schedule announcements from Mccabes and Coffee Gallery. Nobody has anything like what's on this site. Not even half what is here. My wife appreciates all the information you have on women artists. (I do too but don't tell my wife.)
ReplyDeleteTen festivals. The othet folk site listed like three. Good work.
ReplyDeleteSitting inside on a rainy Monday morning as the rain scrubs the fire smoke out of the air and thinking about a weekend of fun string music I enjoyed. I learned aboutf the festival brcause of this site. You always come through for me and I usually can only make last minute plans.
ReplyDeleteRon Sarfaty is an incredibly amazing man. I hope everyone who reads this looks at at least one of the many posts where you tell everyone about the benefit concert for him on Sunday night. He needs and deserves a few bucks from every artist rrsding this so he can get a new used van that lets him drive in his wheelchair. Or else how will be able to keep going to the gig and videoing it for the artist and giving it to them FOR FREE?!!
ReplyDelete
