LATE ADDITION...
Sat, May 11, in Pasadena:
6:30-9:30 pm "BLUES MUSIC IN MEMORY OF HERBIE KATZ" at Big Mama's BBQ, on N Lake Av in Pasadena.
+
This is the first of THREE musical memorials to celebrate the life of the blues harmonica virtuoso and all-around great guy. Tonight, the emphasis is on music as entertainment, since the venue is a restaurant serving dinner to all patrons.
+
About the other two musical memorials:
+
Bob Sullivan is doing a tribute to Herbie on Monday, May 20th, 7-10 pm at the Celebrity Center on Franklin in Hollywood, with Wumbloozo playing both electric and unplugged with Randy Tobin sitting in on harmonica.
+
Then, everyone who knew Herbie is encouraged to take part on Saturday, June 1st from 2-4 pm at Mayflower Inn in North Hollywood. This one is hosted by Herbie's son and brother. Wumbloozo will also be playing here, with Randy Tobin sitting in on harmonica. If you come to either the Celebrity Center OR the Mayflower memorial event(s), please bring a pot luck dish. The band adds, "Thank you for all the sentiments and kind words about Herbie (Doctor Fun) that have been received." More at www.wumbloozo.com.

We cover a LOT of details, but sometimes the link for a festival’s site has esoterica we didn’t have at press time, like provisions for jamming, where the best jams happen, early-bird discounts, volunteer opportunities that get you in free, extra-fare VIP seating, camping or lodgings, reserving shuttles / transport to avoid parking hassles, and more.

Friday, May 10
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~
.
This day in history…
+
On this date in 1869, the Golden Spike was driven (actually, inserted into a pre-drilled hole) in a laurel wood crosstie, physically and symbolically completing the first transcontinental railway. The Union Pacific had built from the East, beginning at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Central Pacific had come from the West, completing the “impossible” crossing of the California High Sierra.
+
The CP built tunnels and snowsheds and towering timber trestles up and over Donner Pass, where just a few years earlier, an entire wagon train had been trapped in 40 foot snow drifts and survivors resorted to cannibalism to survive.
+
That illustrates just what a daunting task the railway had been, bringing a smooth and comfortable road of iron across what had been an abject wilderness – a place populated by nomadic Native American Indian societies who roamed in search of buffalo herds that still numbered in the millions. The coming of the iron horse would spell the end of a civilization based on man’s reliance on the flesh-and-blood horse, and bring agriculture, mining, settlement in towns, and the end of a frontier that had been expected to last another hundred years. Each year, Amtrak commemorates the age of the railroad and its continuing usefulness with the “NATIONAL DAY OF THE TRAIN.” It’s held in numerous trackside venues, including a festival at Los Angeles Union Station (this year, it’s all on May 11).
+
One day late is nothing compared to what we can note about the low tech of the nineteenth century versus the vaunted high tech of our time: The entire transcontinental railroad, with 1776 miles of new track where things had been quite literally trackless, was engineered, completed, and opened to regular service in less than four years. All that, across abject wilderness, without electricity or computers. Today, L.A.’s Metro, with limitless electricity and computers, has taken more than twice that many years (and counting) to establish service on ten miles of existing track through populated Southern California. We used to know how to get things done.

Sat, May 11, in Pasadena:
7 pm FUR DIXON, SABRINA & CRAIG, and DAVE MORRISON, play Throop Unitarian, 300 S Los Robles (at Del Mar), Pasadena.
+
Series organizers say, “We're proud to present Fur Dixon. Till recently she was one half of Fur and Steve, one of the region's most popular California Country acts. Fur is a wonder. Truly a fine and expressive singer, with loads of great songs. And she's as charming and funny as everybody says. Don't miss one of her first shows in her new incarnation.”
+
They continue, “Sabrina and Craig are a classic act. Sort of a modern take on the kind of folk duos that were once so popular. Craig Lincoln is an award-winning guitarist, and both write songs that are turning up everywhere. Add tight harmonies and inventive vocal arrangements, and what's not to love?”
+
In addition to performing with his band, DAVE MORRISON says, “We've decided to go with Lasagna and all the fixin's instead. Salad, bread, the whole deal. And it's all included in the price of admission. How do we do it? Volume! :0) Also we'll have water, soft-drinks an some pathetic low-dollar beer and wine. Feel free to bring your own and jealously hoard it.”
+
Some parking in the lot, more out front, and lots around the corner on Oakland, all free. Doors open at 6:30. Music starts at 7, Food at 8:15 (give Mom a late lunch) Song-Circle following my set at about 9:45 (open to all) And there is plenty of room for free-form socializing for those who've had enough music. 1) Sunday’s FESTIVALS:
.
Sun, May 19, FESTIVAL, in Agoura Hills:
Annual “TOPANGA BANJO FIDDLE CONTEST & FOLK FESTIVAL” at Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is Southern California’s best one-day acoustic music festival, and the contest awards are coveted and prestigious. There are multiple entertainment stages of bluegrass, old-time, and traditional folk-Americana all day, in addition to live music for dancing, and the contest competitors. It always makes for tough choices, hour-by-hour, which acts to see. The perfectly picturesque site is an old western movie-set town with surrounding oak woodlands, administered by the National Park Service. The event features NPS displays, vendors of instruments and more, and truly superior festival food. Come early, because the vast parking lots filled-up in 2011 and latecomers were turned-away; it nearly happened again in 2012. Full details at www.topangabanjofiddle.org.

The popular bluegrass-themed festival is moving from its original location at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in a bittersweet decision for the family of event founder DON TUCKER, who passed away after suffering a stroke in October. The festival’s new home, Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park, is a 150-acre venue with green grass stage area, bountiful trees and two stocked lakes for fishing. The park is surrounded by a variety of hotels and offers quick and easy access from the I-10 freeway. Check out the festival video at www.promo.huckfinn.com and get all the details, including early-bird discount tix, camping, etc, at www.huckfinn.com.

Under Don Tucker’s leadership, Huck Finn achieved multiple recognitions as one of the finest family-friendly music festivals in America. We expect his family will carry on with the same commitment and continue to produce a model event.
