Another outstanding weekend for MUSIC FESTIVALS!
.
Saturday brings MAKE MUSIC PASADENA, a massive free festival that's expanding beyond all comprehension. And there is growing overabundance of so much more that you'll feel like a potentate or sultan who sends away the dancing girls because the snake charmer is so intriguing. Well, maybe the cellist. Or the bagpiper. It's enough to make us feel rich. Even if we are starving artists.
.
Sunday brings the FREE annual LUMMIS DAY FESTIVAL. And of course, there's MUCH more!
.
Put on the coffee (or if your weekend has started, crack a cold one) and peruse the assembled wonderments, extending from right now to half past summer. Enjoy!

* LATE ADDITION...
Sun, Jun 2, in T.O.:
2 pm JENI & BILLY, in a last chance to catch their Traditional Country, Appalachian, Old-time, Country Blues, Bluegrass and Folk music infused original songs, play their final Southern Cal show this tour. It's at the Grant Brimhall Thousand Oaks Library on Janss Rd. In T.O.
+
This is a specially-themed program called "Songs by the Book," with their original songs based on favorite books.
+
JENI & BILLY, with their sparse sound and absorbing lyrics, have caught the attention of Americana greats Jim Lauderdale and Buddy Miller and folk-rock artist Jim Reilley of the New Dylans. Yet one of their favorite reviews comes from Asheville, North Carolina, antiquarian map dealer John Ptak who writes, “I knew within 10 seconds that you guys were for real . . . Jeni's voice is that clear Mother-M kind of quality that I love. I like the music you two make – inspired, true-to-your roots, spare (excellent) guitar. I like silent places in music . . . Quiet, silent places give you time to listen, and also time to think – they are vastly underrated.”
+
Thanks to Russ & Julie of house concert fame (and Topanga Banjo Fiddle 2013 "Legend Award" recipients) for the late word to include here.

3) Saturday's FESTIVALS:
.
Sat, Jun 1,
FREE FESTIVAL,
in Pasadena:
11 am-11 pm Annual "MAKE MUSIC PASADENA" breaks this year from the date of its inspiration, France's "Fete de la Musique," but promises to continue the astonishing assortment of live music performances. All together, this includes over 150 performances on 40 stages and one transit bus line.
+
It also expands geographically for the first time, far beyond Old Town Pasadena. But why not? In France, it's a day of music in every street corner.
+
For some, the stage at Pasadena High School booked by Nick Smith (of Caltech Folk Music Society), operated in conjunction with the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life," will be their primary choice. With far-flung venues, past year's reckonings if walk / jog times won't work. You'll need to deal with driving and parking, ir take advantage of the Pasadena ARTS buses. The latter's Route 10 will feature on-board performers at noon and 1 pm.
+
Folk-Americana fans will find an abundance of music to suit their tastes, and opportunities to discover and enjoy bands and musicians they don't know. Some participating artists even have sponsorship from their nations' consulates, notably France and Brazil.
+
The Guide offers the following as "recommended and notable acts" around town, OTHER than at "Relay for Life" (that's below):
+
• DUSTBOWL REVIVAL
and
• JESSICA FICHOT are Guide favorites
• LAS CAFETERIAS is outstanding and very different
We especially look forward to
• French folkies SOKO
and
• Brazilian singer-songwriter-cellist DOM LA NENA
We'll catch-as-catch-can...
• DAVID & OLIVIA an Americana duo
• UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE a 16-piece affair that seems inevitable as soon as you hear about it
• the SHERRY PRUITT BLUES PROJECT should be wonderful
We'll catch part of the sets by
• RUTHANN FRIEDMAN
and
• AMANDA JO WILLIAMS
• We'll give FORT KING another try
• PLEASE DON'T SHOOT!, a Pasadena pop-folk band with JANE DAVIDSON, is intriguing
• RASPIN has good stuff
• bands HUNTER HUNTED, TAKEN BY TREES, THE PEACH KINGS, and THE NEW LIMB will all be new to us, but we want to see them
• THE RECORD COMPANY does bluesy rock
• singer-songwriter SIMONE WHITE looks interesting
+
And you've gotta love the name of French indie rockers FREEDOM FRY, if you paid any attention at all during the bad old days of bullying our allies over the Iraq war.
+
At the "RELAY FOR LIFE" event / stage at Pasadena High School (a few miles NE of all the other venues) there are plenty of fine local folkies performing. They include
• SEVERIN BROWNE
• MARINA V
• SABRINA & CRAIG
• RIC TAYLOR
• DALE LaDUKE
+
Options for food and bars from upscale to basic are near all the venues except the high school.
+
This year may not feel quite as "free" because there is a campaign to get you to donate $5. But c'mon: for all these hours of all this music?
+
If all this isn't enough for you, the event's website is www.makemusicpasadena.org

+
The Grammy-nominated Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra celebrates their new recording, "Artistry," a tribute to legendary jazz figure Stan Kenton, combining the sounds of large ensemble jazz with symphonic colors and textures.
+
Led by saxophone soloist Kim Richmond, the 23-piece orchestra — featuring expansive instrumentation that includes five woodwinds, four trumpets, three tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba, two French horns, Latin percussion and more — plays selections from the new CD.
+
"Artistry" is specifically a tribute not just to big band leader Kenton, but to his Neophonic Orchestra, created in 1964 with L.A.’s best jazz and studio musicians. Big, new, Kentonesque jazz and Latin-style compositions pay homage to the size and scope of the master’s kinetic orchestration, rightfully known to music historians as the original “Wall of Sound.”

+
CHRIS SHIFLETT & THE DEAD PEASANTS; in their self-titled debut album show a new, perhaps unexpected side of longtime FOO FIGHTER lead guitarist Chris. His skill at writing is slightly dialed-down, geared for infectious Americana-laced rock songs. The album is chock-full of soulful pedal steel and twang guitar-accented songs steeped in his longtime appreciation of classic country artists including Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Hank Williams, and rockabilly like Gene Vincent, Elvis, and Eddie Cochran, along with deep-rooted rock bands The Replacements, The Rolling Stones, and X. Built around Shiflett’s innate pop sensibilities and punk enthusiasm, each track reveals new layers. Come hear 'em live. More at www.chrisshiflettmusic.com/

BOB WOODRUFF is a critically acclaimed songwriter and recording artist from NYC. His recording sessions and are sweetened by many Rock ‘n’ Roll and Country Music Hall of Famers including Emmylou Harris, Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Gary Tallent (Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band), Bernie Leadon (The Eagles), James Burton (Elvis), Glen D. Hardin (Elvis), Marc Ford (Black Crowes), Sam Bush (New Grass Revival), Pig Robbins, and others. He has recorded for various labels including, Restless / Enigma, Elektra / Asylum, Imprint, and Interscope Records. More than a few top critics have stated that his albums are among the finest country-rock records ever released. His songs meld R&B, country and rock. He is currently living in L.A., writing songs and composing music for motion pictures, television and other recording artists.

Tue, Jun 4, in Altadena:
8 pm Guitar wizard EL TWANGUERO here from Spain on a California tour, plays the Coffee Gallery Backstage ("L.A.'s best intimate venue for live acoustic music"), 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena 91001.
+
His tour ranges all the way to Canada along the West Coast. EL TWANGERO is flamenco star DIEGO EL CIALA, one of today's best Spanish guitarists by either name.
Although he is well known in Europe and Latin America, this is his first time in the US and Canada with his own project.
+
An exotic mixture of Spanish guitar, twang and roots sounds (flamenco, tango, ragtime) all done with an impeccable finger style technique, emerge from Diego’s Gibson guitar. One of the best Spanish musicians in the world arrives to tour the US and Canada. EL TWANGUERO (aka Diego García) is coming to dazzle us all on his first West Coast tour. It is a unique opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
+
Diego has become well known in Europe and South America for indefatigable pursuing a blend between Hispanic sounds and American roots. As a matter of fact,it is this genuine mixof styles the very reason why he has earned the name “El Twanguero”.
+
But that’s not all. García is currently touring as a guest artist of flamenco star Diego El Cigala, as the first electric guitarist allowed to join flamencos. Diego is constantly on the move, playing his music all over the world, he has appeared on stage in Argentina, Spain, France, Japan, USA, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Poland, UK, Belgium, Ecuador, Uruguay, Germany, Italy, Colombia, Paraguay, Venezuela, Panama, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, along with his Trio or his solo Guitar, and has put his guitar to serve such artists as Andres Calamaro, Diego El Cigala, Wyclef Jean, Juanes, Fito Paez, Bunbury and Ely Guerra.

+
This show could (and should) be in a big venue, where crowds could thunderously express their approval. Instead, it's in L.A.'s smallest nightly music venue, where you can see every finger on every string. It features four of Los Angeles' most unique and innovative slide players, as well as many incredible resonator guitars.
+
TERRY OKEY supplied the Guide with an extensive write-up:
+
THE INSTRUMENTS
+
From a one-stringed African instrument to the stunning art-deco design of the chrome National Tri-cone guitar, the slide guitar has been one of the most fascinating musical developments of the last century.
+
Slide or "slack key" guitar is a method of imitating the human voice by using a steel pipe on the strings of a guitar. Rather than hit specified notes as when fretting a guitar, the slide player is free to bend and vibrate notes, resembling a human voice or someone mournfully crying, at other times like screaming demons from the netherworld. Poorer musicians might break the neck off of a bottle and use it to sound the notes.
+
Resonator guitars were designed and built to facilitate slide playing. These beautiful guitars feature a large metal plate mounted to the top of the guitar to "resonate" the sounds from within. A California invention, National Guitar Company started production in the mid 1920's, boomed through the great depression and lasted well into the 1940's when shortages of metal for the war effort put them out of business.
+
Popularized in the 1920's and 30's during a Hawaiian music craze, the real legends started with blues artists like Blind Willie McTell, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son House, and Robert Johnson. Electrified slide guitar in the fifties brought the sounds of Elmore James and Bo Diddley. The tradition was carried on by sixties rockers Eric Clapton, Duane Allman and Jimmy Page, while purists like Ry Cooder, Bob Brozman and many bluegrass players kept up the acoustic slide scene.
+
Many guitar makers have returned to building these instruments, and slide guitar is currently enjoying a resurgence thanks to modern releases from artists like Keb' Mo, The Dixie Chicks, Eric Clapton and Jerry Douglas.
+
THE PLAYERS
+
Tonight's all slide-guitar night features four unique and innovative slide players, as well as many incredible resonator guitars. You will see and hear four distinctly different artist techniques and many amazing musical styles, all adapted from legendary players.
+
MIKE FREAS is a musical journeyman and historian. A veritable library of ragtime, blues and jazz finger-picking. Mastering guitar styles from the 1920's and 30's blues and jazz has taken Mike on a thirty year journey and he will share with you some joyous rare old songs as well as some of his own "old modern" creations.
+
MATT BRADFORD discovered the slide guitar after a hand injury made it difficult to play his beloved guitars. It was a discovery that completely changed his musical world. Delving into the styles of lap steel guitars (played lying down on the lap of the player) Matt digs, wails and slides his way through blues, bluegrass and rock. Blazing runs punctuate his heavy-acoustic sound as he reveals what happens when bluegrass history collides with the blues.
+
TERRY OKEY spent a long time learning the historical aspects of the slide guitar, then threw it all away trying to create new emotional sounds from old traditions. In his songs you can hear the old days calling out, but giving way to important new grooves and contemporary lyrics. He will host the night with several vintage guitars and share many fascinating songs and stories.
+
JEREMIAH SAMMARTINO has ventured down many dirt roads and back alleys to discover his slide guitar sound. Logging tens of thousands of miles he has delivered his music as far and wide as it's historical legends. Gracing stages in Los Angeles, Austin, Nashville and all through Europe he has forged a formidable musical show. His style of "electrifying americana" comes from blazing slide-blues rave ups and beautiful acoustic folk songs. Jeremiah recently received an Emmy nomination for writing music for the documentary "Prison Through Tomorrow's Eyes".
+

Fri, Jun 7, in L.A. (Griffith Park):
7:30 pm "A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION" live at the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont Av, L.A.
+
Each year, Garrison Keillor uproots his Minnesota-based radio program and its colorful cast of musical characters and takes the show on the road. They land in Los Angeles for one show at The Greek Theatre.
+
As always, special guests join the regular cast. Announced so far are LILY TOMLIN, PAULA POUNDSTONE, and JEARLYN & JEVETTA STEELE.
+
Now, why would any of those eminently practical (not to mention notoriously frugal) Minnesota Norwegian Lutherans think of buying a ticket for something that's free on the radio? And, when you see the ticket prices, you may be scared away. But not so fast. Persistent rumors that host Garrison Keillor may really be retiring soon could make this your last chance to see the show live.
+
Currently in its 39th season, "A Prairie Home Companion" has made the fictional small town of Lake Wobegon part of American popular culture. The show is broadcast on more than 600 public radio stations nationwide, with a weekly audience of nearly 4 million listeners. The program is also heard on the American Forces Network Europe, the Far East Network, and in dozens of European cities via the Astra satellite network.
+
Garrison Keillor has been the host and writer of "A Prairie Home Companion" since the program started production in 1974. He has been honored with Grammy, ACE, and George Foster Peabody awards, the National Humanities Medal, and election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
+
In addition to radio's weekly PHC, Keillor hosts the daily program, "The Writer's Almanac."
+
His many books include "Lake Wobegon Days," "The Book of Guys," "Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance," and his latest, "Guy Noir and the Straight Skinny" (Viking).
+
He is the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently, "Good Poems: American Places" (Viking). In 2006, Keillor played himself in the movie adaptation of his show, a film directed by Robert Altman (The Guide reviewed it). In 2007, he opened an independent bookstore, Common Good Books, in St. Paul, where he lives with his wife and daughter.
+
"A Prairie Home Companion" is produced by Prairie Home Productions and presented by American Public Media. Audio clips, scripts and more information on "A Prairie Home Companion" can be found online at www.prairiehome.org.

All day - Opening day of "RINGO: PEACE & LOVE," a debut exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Tix and info, 213-765-6800; www.grammymuseum.org.
+
This is the first major exhibition to explore the life and extraordinary career of 7-time GRAMMY Award® winner and iconic BEATLE RINGO STARR and the first major exhibit ever dedicated to a drummer.
+
The GRAMMY Museum, in cooperation with Ringo Starr himself, is debuting this major new exhibition, opening June 12, 2013. The one-of-a-kind, LIMITED-RUN exhibit will offer visitors an unprecedented in-depth look at all aspects of Starr’s musical and creative life –- as a musician, artist, actor, and as the man the world knows and loves simply as "Ringo."
+
Important to Ringo, it also aims to propel his "universal message of peace and love."
+
The scope of the exhibit spans Ringo’s early life growing up in Liverpool, from RAVING TEXANS turned RORY STORM, from THE BEATLES to becoming a solo artist, and then to the ALL STARRS with whom he continues to tour. The unique collection brings together diverse artifacts, rare and never before seen photographs, documents, personal letters and film and video footage.
+
"Ringo: Peace & Love" will be located on the second floor in The GRAMMY Museum's Special Exhibits Gallery and will include:
+
• The drum kit Ringo played on "Let It Be," "Abbey Road," and "The White Album"
• The drum kit he played on "The Ed Sullivan Show"
• Ringo's "Sgt Pepper" Suit
• The cape he wore in "Help!"
• The red jacket worn during the filming of The Beatles' rooftop concert
• Personal letters, photographs and documents from the Starkey family and Ringo's days with The Beatles
+
It also includes an innovative interactive exhibit, the kind of thing for which the Grammy Museum is renowned, "where visitors can take a drum lesson with Ringo."
+
"With this exhibition, the Grammy Museum becomes the only museum in the world to host major special exhibitions dedicated to each member of THE BEATLES," said Museum Director Robert Santelli earlier this year when he gave the Guide a heads-up that this was coming.
+
The entrance to the GRAMMY Museum, in the L.A. LIVE complex, is on Figueroa, just S of Olympic (official address is 800 W Olympic Bl, Suite A245, one block from STAPLES Center), Los Angeles 90015. You can walk from the Red Line subway or the Blue Line light rail's Chuc Hearne Station and avoid expensive parking fees in the area.

+
The history of Irish music has been influenced throughout the centuries by spirituality, religion, wars and emigration. As a country on the edge of Western Europe, it had both the isolated position of its island heritage and the constant flow of merchants, sailors, mercenary soldiers, and itinerant musicians from near and far to add the color and the vibrance that became the music and dance of Ireland, and by extension, much of America.
+
Ken will give the audience a broad look at what has remained one of Ireland's greatest treasures...its music.
+
With songs in both English and Irish Gaelic, a Ken O'Malley performance is suitable for all ages and has something for everyone. As one longtime fan says, "the songs Ken sings touch all of us, Irish or not, to the very core of the human heart."

8:30 pm "FOREVER FLAMENCO" presented by the Fountain Theatre at the Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Bl East, Hollywood 90068; www.fordtheatres.org
+
MARIA BERMUDEZ, one of the featured artists of the evening, shares her inspiration for becoming a flamenco dancer and the continous journey it has led her on:
+
"I grew up with flamenco in the background of my childhood. My older brother Alfonso was bit by the flamenco bug after seeing his first flamenco show passing through town; that was it for him. He went on to study with the masters in Spain and became a promising flamenco dancer. Alfonso danced with an exquisite sensitivity. I believe dance was an escape for him. He was a gay man—not an easy situation in our household. He suffered on many levels. The freedom that flamenco – that art--brings to your life; it’s a place of sanctuary.
+
"Alfonso’s life was cut short. He succumbed to cancer at the age of 27 and died two years later. I was 16 years old. My interest was also in the arts but as an actor and singer. After his passing I suddenly wanted to study Flamenco. It was as though Alfonso wanted… needed to continue dancing and I became his vessel. All who knew him would say the love of his life was his dancing.
+
"I became obsessed with the art form and after only six months of preparation, I packed my bags and was off to Spain to learn to dance. Or so I thought. I discovered I needed to go much further and deeper, metaphorically and literally, to the place, the source of flamenco. This took me to the deep south of Spain, to gypsy territory, a place I have called home for the last 20 years.
+
"This journey, which I am still on, has been full of heart aching challenges and absolutely gratifying moments of triumph. From being treated as an outsider to falling in love with a gypsy and then marrying him. But drip of sweat by drip of sweat, I began winning respect through my dedication and total immersion into the culture.
+
"The amount of emotion involved in flamenco is unparalleled. I feel the freedom of expression through the cry of the singers and the music and through the beauty of the dance. It’s euphoric! The best part is the audience’s connection with flamenco on levels unexpected to them. The response is always love, love, love! It’s all worth it.

Sat, Jun 22, in L.A.:
8 pm "AN EVENING WITH IRIS DeMENT and RT N' THE 44s" inside and outside in the courtyard at the First Unitarian Church, 2936 W 8th St, Los Angeles 90005; www.uula.org. All ages.
+
Show is presented by Spaceland, The Grand Ole Echo, and LA Weekly.
+
IRIS DeMENT says of that elusive inspirational spark, "I didn't know when or if I'd make another record. I gave up on trying to steer it or force it and decided to just make myself available in my heart and mind as much as I could and leave the rest up to fate."
+
Sixteen years after the last collection of DeMent songs, that time has come. "Sing The Delta" presents twelve self-penned compositions from an artist whose first three albums established her as one of the most beloved and respected writers and singers in American music.
+
DeMent, the last of 14 children, born in Arkansas and raised in Southern California, grew up immersed in gospel music and traditional country. She was somewhat of a late bloomer as an artist, writing her first song at age of 25. Her first release, "Infamous Angel," initially issued on Rounder in 1992 before being picked up by Warner Bros., immediately established her as a promising and talented artist.
+
Its 1994 follow-up, "My Life," earned a GRAMMY nomination in the "Contemporary Folk" category. Her 1996 album, "The Way I Should," addressed political as well as personal themes and earned another GRAMMY nomination.
+
Along the way, several of DeMent's songs became cultural touchstones. "Let The Mystery Be" found its way to MTV "Unplugged" as a duet by DAVID BYRNE and NATALIE MERCHANT. "Our Town" was played over the farewell scene in the series finale of "Northern Exposure." MERLE HAGGARD, who said of DeMent, "She's the best singer I've ever heard," invited her to sit-in as his piano player touring with his legendary band THE STRANGERS. Haggard subsequently covered two of her songs, "No Time To Cry," and the gospel-tinged, "The Shores of Jordan."
+
DeMent has remained active as an artist, despite the long absence of new CDs in her name. She sang four duets with JOHN PRINE on "In Spite of Ourselves" and had a minor role in the motion picture "Songcatcher," as well as contributing a song to its soundtrack. She continued playing live shows, and in 2004, she recorded an album of gospel songs, "Lifeline," which included her rendition of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." In 2010, the Coen Brothers chose that song for the closing credits when they remade the classic western, "True Grit."
+
Still, DeMent never took for granted the arrival of an album's worth of new songs. "Songs would come along here and there and I'd go out and sing them for people, but for a long time, I just didn't know what would become of any of them. Then last year, a door kinda opened up, and a handful of songs walked through and a few unfinished ones came together, and I knew I had a record."
+
As with "Lifeline," DeMent is releasing "Sing The Delta" on her own label, Flariella Records. It was recorded at Richard McLaurin's House of David studio in Nashville with co-producers Richard Bennett and Bo Ramsey, with a supporting cast that included Bryan Owings on drums, Dave Jacques on bass, Al Perkins on pedal steel, and Reese Wynans on B3 organ, as well as horn players Jim Hoke and Steve Herman on a couple of numbers.
+
Of the time it took, DeMent says, "Some of these songs I've had around awhile, but I needed time to grow into them. I guess you could say I just wasn't ready to deliver them in the way that they deserved. I'm glad I waited. It's taught me to surrender… to trust the natural flow and order of things and not worry about it."
+
It's an instinct she's learned to trust ever since she first sat down to write her first couple of songs at age 25 and found "Our Town" spilling out onto the page. "It was like somebody walked right into that room and said, 'There you have it, Iris' — I knew then and there that I had gotten my calling," she relates.
+
She continues, "I had always been taught in church that God, or spirit, if you will, calls us to a life work. I got mine that day. Whether I write one song a year or ten, it doesn't matter. It's a 'knowing' that I have that hasn't left me since that day. That's what I check-in with, and as long as that's there, the rest of it doesn't matter. The time it takes is just the time it takes."

Plus,
RT N' THE 44s (outside in the courtyard). They are a self-descrobed "Folk Noir band" created by singer-songwriter RT VALINE. Founded in 2009, the band originated in Los Angeles, alongside local bands Leslie and the Badgers,Spindrift, Gwendolyn , and Ruthann Friedman.
+
Every one of them has a claim to something unique, but this band has "unique" cornerned. Not since JOE CRAVEN have we seen musicians using an array of instruments crafted from tin, 2x4's and salvaged parts. RT simply says that RT N' THE 44s was born out of "an attempt to make listenable music from junk."
+
They have been described as a "vintage country band with dark obsessions." The band is often seen busking at various locations throughout Los Angeles and Pasadena in the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston.
+
As members of the "New L.A. FOLKFEST," the band has performed with John C. Reilly, Tom Brosseau, T-Model Ford, and Red Simpson, among other notable acts. RT N' THE 44s performs annually at The "ROOTS ROADHOUSE FESTIVAL" and at the Autry National Center.
+
The band has recorded three full-length albums for the independent label Rabid Rabbit Records, and has been featured "live in studio" on KUCI's "Freedom Radio" program.

The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS and views of interest to artists everywhere, more specifically to musicians and the creative community, and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music, both traditional and innovative. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues, and schedules of performances in Southern California venues large and small. We cover workshops and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kids o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to proto blues.

ReplyDeleteI found me a show for tonight - a reminder that Tom Corbett will be at The Coffee Gallery Backstage, in Altadena
Thanks so much ! Lynda Bruton
We're headed 2 Make Music Pasadena. Want to thank u 4 callout recommendations and inside facts not on the mmp site.
ReplyDeleteThanks for including the eco fest without Salty Suites and Rod Piazza. Seeing that we will go!!!
ReplyDeleteomg, if i go to pasadena for free music all day i can stay and see the symphony at the arboretum tonight? (i know, pay for that last one). how can anyplace else beat this?
ReplyDeleteI think you really look out for broke people with FREE music recommendations. Beverly Glen tomorrow, Lummis Day next weekend, Make Music Pasadena today/tonight. I think lots of us really appreciate that. I khow I do. Chris
ReplyDeleteJust moved here from New York. Did NOT expect arts and music would be much in lala land. Your blog proved me wrong. This is so much better than trying to find good fun things in the LA Times. Many of your listings are reviews! Amazing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for pointing me to the memorial today for Herbie Katz. That "kat" was one magnificent harmonica blues man. I'll take my potluck dish and my axe and be there.
ReplyDeleteStill trying to decide betwern Huck Finn, Live Oak, or Claremont Folk Fests. At least the two weekends before then are easy!
ReplyDeleteMy kid just exlained the "Buehler-Buehler" to me. He wasn't even born when that movie was made... guess I've led a sheltered life... He's taking me to Make Music Pasadena. Probably so I can pay for food. I'll be using the list of artists you made to keep us away from any rap or weird electrical shreiking. I know I will apreciate having that.
ReplyDeleteI live in Ohio and I see your fb posts. This morning I decided to use your link instead of reading more of the scary tornado reports. I am just jealous that you all have so much to pick from out there! I will be reading often for what I can learn about music and musicians---even if I can't go see the concerts they are playing there---because I will know who to watch for when they come here to play. I just spent 3 hours here exploring. I especially enjoyed reading your story on the ghost of John Phillip Souza in Hawaii. He's a big local hero here and I knew none of that. Keep up the good work!

The person who posted about going to Lummis Day next weekend made me check. You got it wrong. It's tomorrow: Sunday, June 2.
ReplyDeleteWr did indeed get it wrong! It is now corrected and there is a special edition calling attention to Lummis Day, JUNE 2, in the hope more folks will discover it and no one will miss it because of us. Thank you for pointing it out!
