Angelo M. (short for Melasecca) is a master fingerstyle and slide guitarist who was able to make the unlikely midlife transition from blue collar steel worker to award-winning songwriter.
+
Angelo M. is the real deal. Many performers can sing the blues, but this former steel worker has lived it. When the Pennsylvania steel mill where he had worked for nearly 30 years was bought-out and then put into bankruptcy, Angelo not only lost his livelihood but his pension, as well.
+
Fortunately, he had other talents, which will be on display in concert.
+
He caught Nashville's attention with his two successful self-released albums. His 2012 label debut, "From Steel to Strings," is now gaining worldwide airplay. Some of the tracks are featured in the PBS television series "RoadTrip Nation," and have brought him several prestigious songwriting honors, including a win in Billboard's "World Song" contest.
+
Angelo M. considers himself a folk or roots artist, rather than strictly blues. But one thing is for sure. His is an authentic voice of experience from the American heartland.

New Zealand's Donna Dean brings a velvet voice with something to say. A songwriter's songwriter, Donna Dean has won multiple APRA and Tui awards for her songwriting and record production, recording with Russell Smith & the Amazing Rhythm Aces, working with the likes of Jimmy Webb and Don McLean, and writing the title track to Rhonda Vincent’s 2010 Grammy nominated bluegrass album, “Destination Life.” Her Tui Award nominated album, "Tyre Tracks & Broken Hearts," is full of stories that find their voices within the cracks in the pavement, not on the main highway but on the backroads where most of us live our lives. It features legendary guitarists Amos Garrett and Albert Lee along with Texas pickers Redd Volkaert and Gurf Morlix.

TRACY NEWMAN & THE REINFORCEMENTS have a unique claim to fame: Tracy Newman has both an Emmy and Peabody Award. She grew up in Los Angeles, started playing guitar at 14, usually sitting on the diving board of her family’s pool, strumming for hours each day. She was, for a time, the youngest member of the NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS. Later, she stopped attending college and began busking. In the early 70s, she joined an improv class taught by Gary Austin, which soon became The Groundlings. Tracy is a founding member, and besides performing, she taught and directed. Her sister, Laraine Newman was the first Groundling to be discovered by Lorne Michaels for “Saturday Night Live.” Some other Groundling alumni include: Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens and Kathy Griffin. The Groundlings brought Tracy to her future TV writing partner, Jonathan Stark. Their first staff job was on “Cheers,” followed by “Bob” (Bob Newhart), “The Nanny,” “Ellen,” “The Drew Carey Show,” and the legendary “Hiller and Diller.” In 1997, Newman and Stark won an Emmy and Peabody Award for writing the groundbreaking “coming out” episode of “Ellen.”In 2001, they created the ABC comedy, "According to Jim," which ran for eight seasons. Her 2007 debut CD, “A Place in the Sun,” debuted on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks,” so it’s always been one of our favorites. This is a youth jazz ensemble playing standards like “Autumn Leaves,” “Ladybird,” “Blue Bossa,” “Bloomdido,” “Canteloupe Island,” “Joshua,” and many other jazz favorites. The high school aged band members are Alex on bass, Andres on piano/keys, Chris on guitar, Matt on guitar, and Sam on drums. The group formed in 2012. They have been studying and performing individually and in community groups and music schools ranging from six to ten years. Tone Clusters is a gripping tragic drama about the parents of an alleged killer, and how they are forced to deal with the media. In the story, Frank and Emily Gulick's son Carl has been arrested for the sadistic murder of Edith Kaminsky. They are adamant that their son is innocent, and what unfolds is a clash between the worldly, condescending media and two individuals' desperate attempts to claim ownership of their own lives.

What's really going on with Monsanto and "frankenfood"?

Reminding us that the small farmer's rights are inherently connected to the future of our world, Dr. Vandana Shiva brings front center the small farmers role in the issue of food security.
+
In an age where multinationals control entire sectors of the seed, food and pharmaceutical industries; Shiva is a leader who exposes intellectual property abuse in the form of biopiracy, whereby entire plants native to the developing world are patented. She was instrumental in the success of the Basmati Patent lawsuit against Ricetec in the US Supreme Court, and the Neem Patent lawsuit against W.R. Grace Co. in the European Patent Office.

Shiva has stressed that Free Trade in global agriculture is being pursued with little regard to the generators and preservers of Food and Food Culture. Traditional knowledge in agriculture, which is by nature, oral, has been passed on from one generation to the next. It has been integral to the survival of the human race. It cannot now be patented by unscrupulous corporations.
+
Her insight into the farmer's contribution as plant breeders, seed savers, and keepers of oral traditions in food preparation and artisanal processing are vital to creating a movement that embodies a philosophy of knowledge in traditional practices.
+
Shiva learned in her childhood, growing up in the Himalayan foothills of India, working side by side with the local village women of "Chpko" movement who beleived in the sagacity of their traditional knowledge that sanctifies the nurturing values of their forests. Their successful efforts to bring about a moratorium on logging of the forests that sustained indigeneous life set a learning ground for Shiva and demonstrated the power of grassroots.

The Burnt Part Boys was a finalist for an American Theatre Critics New Play Award and received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award. It premiered Off-Broadway in 2010 as a co-production by Playwrights Horizons and Vineyard Theatre in 2010, receiving a Lucille Lortel nomination for Best Musical. Variety called The Burnt Part Boys “an adventurous, innovative and gripping musical,” and the The New York Times wrote “the spirit of youthful high jinks recall[s] the exploits of Mark Twain’s beloved roughhousers, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.”

Composer Chris Miller and lyricist Nathan Tysen started collaborating in 1999 at New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. In addition to The Burnt Part Boys, they have written the scores to Fugitive Songs (2008 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Revue) and the current Broadway-bound adaptation of the popular novel Tuck Everlasting. Other work includes a song for the revue Stars of David; commissions from Lincoln Center Theater and Playwrights Horizons/Theatreworks Silicon Valley; and an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s picture book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Boston Globe Top Ten Pick of 2008). Their television work includes songs for Sesame Street (2012 Daytime Emmy Award) and The Electric Company.

The Burnt Part Boys was a finalist for an American Theatre Critics New Play Award and received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award. It premiered Off-Broadway in 2010 as a co-production by Playwrights Horizons and Vineyard Theatre in 2010, receiving a Lucille Lortel nomination for Best Musical. Variety called The Burnt Part Boys “an adventurous, innovative and gripping musical,” and the The New York Times wrote “the spirit of youthful high jinks recall[s] the exploits of Mark Twain’s beloved roughhousers, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.”

Composer Chris Miller and lyricist Nathan Tysen started collaborating in 1999 at New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. In addition to The Burnt Part Boys, they have written the scores to Fugitive Songs (2008 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Revue) and the current Broadway-bound adaptation of the popular novel Tuck Everlasting. On display through January 2014, the “John Fogerty: Wrote A Song For Everyone” exhibit will feature:
- Centerfield “Baseball Bat” guitar; played during his solo career;
- Dobro guitar from 1969’s Green River album cover;
- John’s personal scrapbook from his time with Creedence Clearwater Revival;
- Handwritten lyrics to “Proud Mary”;
- Fogerty’s high-school diploma and yearbook;
- Costumes, posters, awards and albums;
- Personal correspondence, tour ephemera and photographs;
- The original recording contract CCR signed with Fantasy Records that came back to haunt him
- And much more.

On the evening of the launch, Fogerty will participate in The GRAMMY Museum’s popular “An Evening With” public program series. The event will be hosted by GRAMMY Museum executive director Bob Santelli, and will include a candid interview and audience Q&A in the Museum’s Clive Davis Theater.

Winston will also play some Hawaiian slack key guitar, in addition to selections from his piano repertoire that will include his own style of melodic instrumental music on solo piano,called "folk piano," and R&B piano, stride piano, Vince Guaraldi's "Peanuts" pieces, and more.

He's a musician and activist who has supported many causes. The audience is invited to join in support of a local food bank by bringing a donation of canned food to the concert. There will be collection baskets at the entrances.

Winston's latest solo piano release is "Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2" -- A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit (2012). Since 1972 he has released 12 other solo piano albums.

In 2001 Winston released "Remembrance -- A Memorial Benefit," a six-song CD of piano, guitar, and harmonica solos to benefit those affected by 9/11. He also worked with the late George Levenson of "Informed Democracy" on three projects: a solo guitar soundtrack for "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" and soundtracks of piano, guitar, and harmonica solos for "Pumpkin Circle" and "Bread Comes to Life." In 1984, he did the solo piano soundtrack for the children's story "The Velveteen Rabbit" for Rabbit Ears Productions.

Winston is presently concentrating mainly on live performances, and most of the time he is touring and playing solo piano concerts, solo guitar concerts,solo harmonica concerts, and solo piano dances (with R&B and slow dance songs).
+
He is studying the playing of the great New Orleans pianists Henry Butler, James Booker, Professor Longhair, Dr. John, and Jon Cleary, and working on interpreting pieces on solo piano by his favorite composers, including Guaraldi, Professor Longhair, the Doors, Frank Zappa, Randy Newman, Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Laura Nyro, Al Kooper, Dr. John, Henry Butler, James Booker, Jon Cleary, Ralph Towner, Arthur Lee, Milt Jackson, John Hartford, Oliver Schroer, Taj Mahal (who performs at Pepperdine on October 6), Philip Aaberg, and others.

Additionally, Winston is working on solo guitar and recording the masters of Hawaiian slack key guitar (named for the beautiful solo finger-style guitar tradition unique to Hawaii) for an extensive series of albums for Dancing Cat Records. He is also recording his main inspirations for his harmonica playing: Sam Hinton, Rick Epping, and Curt Bouterse.

Born in 1974,upright bassist Jake Erwin hails from Tulsa,Oklahoma,location of the legendary Cain's Ballroom,home of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. He took an interest in American roots music at an early age and decided to explore its variations through the sound of the double bass.

He has become one of the country's premier practitioners of percussive "slap bass," a style begun in early New Orleans jazz that continues through country,blues,and even rock 'n' roll today.

Folk-rock music icon Roger McGuinn teams up with country music singer-songwriter Marty Stuart and his band,the Fabulous Superlatives, to perform such classics as "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Eight Miles High," and "Turn,Turn, Turn."
+
McGuinn and Stuart are an unbeatable combination, but for guitar fans the show offers even more. While it may not be a Byrds reunion,it's a reunion of sorts as McGuinn's signature 12-string Rickenbacker guitar blends again with Stuart's B-Bender guitar.
+
Stuart's well-known B-Bender started life as a 1954 Fender Telecaster and was the main electric "axe" of legendary country-rock pioneer Clarence White of The Byrds. White and multi-instrumentalist Gene Parsons fashioned a steel-guitar-inspired mechanism that raised the B string a whole step when downward pressure was applied on the strap and the string was "bent." White used the guitar almost exclusively until his untimely end in 1973; its distinctive sound is heard blending seamlessly with McGuinn's 12-string on many Byrds recordings.

After White's passing,the "Clarence White Tele" sat unused at his home in Kentucky until his widow,Suzy,contacted Stuart. "The guitar really found me," recalls Stuart. "Roland White, Clarence's brother,got me my gig with Lester Flatt,and I was friends with the family. The guitar already had a following of its own by that time -- I was always fascinated by it, lusted after it,and I'd even had a similar bender put in another guitar to try and duplicate the effect.

"I've never considered it my guitar,really. It's his,and now it kind of has a life of its own. The spring gets dry and squeaks,so I spray WD-40 on it now and then,but I've never cleaned it. All the dirt inside and behind the strings is the original dirt. We call it 'Clarence.'"
+
For many who hear the name Roger McGuinn, the first thing that comes to mind is that unmistakable Rickenbacker 12-string guitar. McGuinn has been associated with the guitar since his earliest days as a member of The Byrds. McGuinn has played other electric guitars over the years and is also known as an acoustic folk artist of considerable magnitude, but he still remains the undisputed "King of the Rick 12." When he started playing it, McGuinn couldn't have known that the 12-string Rickenbacker would become his signature sound.

"We went as a group to see A Hard Day's Night multiple times and were totally taken with The Beatles," says McGuinn. "I liked George Harrison's Rickenbacker 12,but I couldn't find one that looked like his with the pointy cutaways,so I bought the blonde 360 model. I thought it was beautiful, like a golden palomino,and the checkerboard binding reminded me of Gene Autry or Roy Rogers. I loved that guitar and played it eight hours a day. It was later stolen and I discovered that it was auctioned off in England for over $100,000. Given the statute of limitations and the difficulty in dealing with laws in a foreign country,there wasn't much I could do,even though I considered myself the legal and rightful owner."

The signature sound continued,however,and a new 12-string took that guitar's place. Now --so many years later -- two men ,two guitars, and a full band are making music together again.
