+
"When I hear Run Boy Run, it all comes back to me, why I started doing that show back then. I hope they go on forever." - Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion.
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane proclaimed after their first CGB show, "Absolutely sensational. Huge accomplishments," and he already rates them among his "top acts," as they return tonight, for only their second show at the venue.
+
This is an exciting young band from Tucson, Arizona. They won the prestigious "Telluride Bluegrass Band Contest" and have been featured twice this year on "A Prairie Home Companion." They have a special gift for writing original songs in the classic old time / bluegrass style, and feature a fine instrumental mix of twin fiddles, mandolin, cello and bass, along with three female lead singers with beautiful harmonies.
+
When Garrison Keillor, host of "A Prairie Home Companion," gives you quotes to illustrate your musical prowess -- "Hot instruments and beautiful, sweet harmony singing - that's all you need in the world today!" -- it should be obvious that audiences won't have long to see them in intimate venues.
+
Run Boy Run truly exceeds the sum of its parts as touches of classical, jazz, and folk express themselves through the old-time core of the band’s unique sound.
+
Band members include Matt Rolland (Fiddle/Guitar), Grace Rolland (Cello/Vocals), Bekah Sandoval (Fiddle/Vocals), Jen Sandoval (Mandolin/Vocals), and Jesse Allen (Bass). Called by Paste Magazine "one of the top ten Arizona bands to hear now", Run Boy Run self-released their full-length album "So Sang the Whippoorwill" in March 2013 to critical regional and national acclaim.
+
From winning the band contest at "Pickin’ in the Pines" in the first weeks of forming in 2009, to playing on stage at the "Telluride Bluegrass Festival" as band contest winners in 2012, to making a second appearance on "A Prairie Home Companion" in 2013, Run Boy Run is spreading this special brand of music to all who hear.
+
"When I hear Run Boy Run, it all comes back to me, why I started doing that show back then. I hope they go on forever." -- Garrison Keillor, A Prairie Home Companion.
+
Brother and sister Matt (fiddle, guitar) and Grace Rolland (cello, vocals), have fiddle music running through their blood. Literally raised with bow and rosin on every bedside table, Run Boy Run was a natural fit.
+
The other two of the band's three female lead singers, sisters Bekah (fiddle, vocals, guitar) and Jen Sandoval (mandolin, vocals), grew-up deeply rooted in the Bluegrass festivals of Arizona, so they found a comfortable home in Run Boy Run.
+
Jesse Allen (bass) was brought up on opera and western swing, and grew to love the natural fusion inherent in American music.
+
The Guide immediately noted that the three beautiful and beautifully-voiced female singers work together so well because each is a virtuoso lead vocalist, and each happily sings backup when one of the others sings lead. There is no diva mentality here; vocally and instrumentally, this band is a team, and they're all about presenting great music with instrumental precision and interwoven high-and-low vocal harmonies as a fully-integrated, maximum-effort ensemble that stunningly makes it all look easy.
+
The whole truly exceeds the sum of the parts as touches of classical, jazz, and folk express themselves through the old-time core of Run Boy Run’s delightful sound.

To celebrate the release of "Privateering," out September 10 on UMG’s Verve Records, Mark Knopfler will play four dates on the West Coast, including this one. It's the first opportunity for fans to hear "Privateering" material live. Knopfler, who is fresh from a 70-date sold-out European tour, brings the seven-piece band that helped create "Privateering" – Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Guy Fletcher (keyboards), John McCusker (fiddle), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), Ian Thomas (drums) and Glenn Worf (bass).
+
The new music is Knopfler’s first double album of new music in his entire recording career. “The older I get, the more I want to write,” Knopfler notes. “I’m enjoying the process more than ever, writing, recording and playing live, I enjoy all of it. I’m almost tripping over songs.”
+
Recorded at Knopfler’s award-winning British Grove Studios in West London, Privateering is a collection of tough tales of real people, living hard lives in difficult times. The record features musicians Knopfler has been working with for years and special guests including Paul Franklin (pedal steel), Kim Wilson, (harmonica), Tim O’Brien (mandolin), and rising singing star Ruth Moody, who is also a member of the leading roots group The Wailin’ Jennys.
+
Of the new release, Knopfler explains, “I chose to make a double album this time just because of the sheer volume of material. I didn’t want to separate songs into genres and I didn’t want to leave too many songs on the shelf. I just wanted it to be a reflection of the fantastic sessions we had. With a great bunch of players, it’s the same as a great group of actors reading a script from the page, the thing can come alive in ways it just never has before. This is the band I have been working towards my whole life.”
+
A multiple Grammy award winner as the lead singer-songwriter for Dire Straits, Knopfler combined his wry lyrics with his guitar prowess to create such major hits as “Money For Nothing,” “Sultans Of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Walk of Life.”
+
He has collaborated withthe notable artists who include Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Emmylou Harris and Van Morrison, as well as scoring several films including "Cal," "Local Hero," "Princess Bride," and "A Shot at Glory."

The duo is often compared to Graceland-era Paul Simon for its ability to incorporate the cheerful rhythms of African highlife music with pop melodies, jazz harmonies, and playful guitar riffs. The "double CD" thing is one CD from each of the bands, but we're focused on Jason Daniels. And we always refrain from calling CD release shows "parties," but this one really is, with birthday cake for L.A. music scenester Kim Grant.

His new album, "Dashboard Visions and Rearview Reflections," is a 10-song genre-bending debut album with a mix of funky country-blues, a collection that reflects his range of influences: a bit of traditional country, blues, and jazz with a little New Orleans funk and a bit of the Caribbean thrown in. The lyrics draw on his recent events but also from years of travel and adventure. Daniels says its underlying message is for “people to get off their asses and go experience life!”

The album was recorded in East Nashville at The Bomb Shelter, the studio now famous for birthing the debut album by the Alabama Shakes. The album was recorded to 2” tape and was entirely analog up to the mixing point. Daniels enlisted Peter Keys help in playing keyboards and assembling the band, which is Jay Kott is on bass, Jeff “Shakey” Fowlkes on drums, and Daniels on guitar and vox. Other musicians lend a hand on sax, trombone and trumpet.
+
Jason Daniels is a transplanted Californian. He grew up in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena and has explored the Golden State’s music scene from the psychedelic sound that permeates Marin County to the country rock and blues scene of Southern California. He moved to Jackson, Mississippi, in 2012 after five years of living in Nashville. It’s his love for country, funk, blues and jazz that lead him to say, “Most of this music started in this part of the South. Maybe that’s why I’m here.”
+
Here's some early critical acclaim for his new CD, "Dashboard Visions and Rearview Reflections" --
+
"It does not take you long of listening to realize the variance of Jason’s American roots music influences and how he has an uncanny knack of doing interesting and entertaining things with them in both subtle hybrids and very unsubtle direct homages. Combine this with lyrics that obviously come straight from his heart... and you have a CD that defies you at times not to tap your feet, play air guitar, or sit back, close your eyes, nod your head in time to the music and smile." -- Music Morsel.
+
"If it wasn’t for his lineage, his pals and his geographic travels, we’d be saying this with tongue in cheek, but we aren’t. And what we are saying is this is the best Van Morrison record since the ones Van did in the early 70s. With Jackson, Nashville and Napa Valley in his blood, a love of blue eyed soul and the rest of the early Morrison moves in tow, this is a driving set that delivers the classic rock stuff so many are looking for but few find. Killer stuff that delightfully opens your jaded ears." -- Midwest Record.

a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick,
in Beverly Hills:
Time tba Blues prodigy JONNY LANG plays the California Canyon Theater in Beverly Hills.
+
He has only this one local date on his current world tour.
+
He's touring his first new studio album in seven years, "Fight For My Soul," which comes out Sep 17 on Concord Records, and it's getting fine reviews.
+
Lang’s songwriting on "Fight For My Soul," the follow up to his 2006 GRAMMY Award-winning "Turn Around," takes a major leap forward, as he explores the struggle for love and family with startling heart and depth.
+
The Wall Street Journal, who premiered the album with a pre-release album stream observed, “Lang has done plenty of growing up since his precocious teenage years, and it shows in the 11 songs on 'Fight for My Soul'.”
+
USA Today calls “Blew Up (The House)”, the album’s first single, “…an incendiary blues-rock stomper about taking extreme measures to make a fresh start.”
+
“This album is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” offers Lang. “Some of these songs may surprise people, but that’s what it's all about. It keeps it fresh, and it keeps me growing. Creatively, I think there is a lot more going on inside of me than I’ve been sharing on record so far. Much of what I've experienced through music and life in general is in these songs.”
+
Lang has toured non-stop since his first major label album "Lie To Me" was released in 1997 when he was 16. That won him a large and incredibly loyal audience, along with a well deserved reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation.
+
Now in the midst of touring to support the new album, Jonny will make a special hometown "CD Release Day" stop in Fargo, North Dakota at The Fargo Theatre. Fargo may not be a blues town, but it will be that day.

Sat, Oct 26,
a “SHOW-OF-THE-WEEK” pick,
in L.A.:
8 pm MARK KNOPFLER plays the Wiltern Theater in L.A.
+

+
"TMG" are accomplished studio and touring musicians / record producers and songwriters Marty Axelrod, Severin Browne, Jeff Kossack, John Stowers, Ed Tree and Jimmy “Muffin” Yessian.
+
In December of 2011, Jimmy "Muffin" Yessian invited five prominent Los Angeles performing songwriters to join him for a monthly gathering sharing food and original music. Each writer accepted the invitation and the group began meeting in January, 2012. The songs created during these meetings inspired the group to join together as an acoustic touring act and taking the name, Tall Men Group, because all are of elevated physical stature.
+
In November 2012, they toured the West coast as far north as Hillsboro, Oregon and back. The overwhelming audience response and success of that tour prompted the band to begin production on their first CD, "12 x 6," being released at this concert.
+
Library Director Steve Brogden says, “When we set this date, neither the band nor I were aware of the interesting synchronicity surrounding the timing for this special night. TMG did not realize they had given their very first live performance on October 26th 2012, just one year earlier to the day. Once the band discovered this amazing coincidence, a sense of Kismet settled in on them and they knew this was to be a truly special evening filled with musical magic. We look forward to sharing this extraordinary evening with you."
+
Brogden continues, "I've seen The Talls twice and they will knock you out with their lyrics, vocal harmonies, and humor. It should be illegal to have that much fun on stage!"

5:30 pm Annual "EEK! AT THE GREEK" returns to the Greek Theatre, 2700 N Vermont, in Griffith Park, Los Angeles.
+
Hailed as a "Great halloween tradition," this event comes close to the season clising
Godd Greek Theatre, Los Angeles It wasn't as good as last year and for some reason there were fewer people, but it was fun nevertheless. The mix was a little off for the first song or perhaps I was just getting used to it, but it adjusted. The tale-tell heart wasn't nearly as good as it was the year before, and the kids choir was a little much, although they had two good songs for them, including one from the Harry Potter series. They added another spoken word piece this year that both me and my girlfriend really liked. I also really liked the closing John Williams piece and the mix (if you can call it that) of Bach's toccata & Fugue and Grieg's Hall of the mountain king. What was also nice was that it was a really clear night and afterwards we went up to the observatory.
Greek Theatre, Los Angeles I loved how mostly everyone, adults and children, were in costumes. The decor was great and fun. The Porsche 911 was a nice touch. Although there were children around the full bar was at a distinct area. Pinks hot dogs and nachos were yummy however they need to supply jalapenos or some type of chilies. The entertainment was great. The orchestra and the readings very entertaining. I will have a suggestion is to maybe schedule it either on a friday night or saturday night. I noticed some people left after intermission."
+
Review from "asnoopyb516," Greek Theatre, Los Angeles: "This has quickly become a family tradition. We went last year and again this year. Maestro Rubenstein was funny and fabulous. The music program was awesome, and both Anne Marie Johnson and Robert Hayes gave incredible readings. I would highly recommend going to next year's event!"

+
Wes (guitar and harmonica), Phil (field drum and keyboards), and Steven (mandolin and bass guitar) have developed their instrumental talents over the years at Renaissance Faires, Celtic Festivals and local music venues. They have also honed their ability to harmonize in the best styles of the classic folk groups of the '60s and '70s, and have crafted arrangements that demonstrate the joy of blending three voices into one. Three of a Kind's first CD, titled "ALL IN," is currently being recorded and scheduled for release in early 2014.

Le Salon de Musiques A.SCHOENBERG Composer & Painter, to his friend V.KANDINSKY:
". . . I am sure that our work has much in common – and indeed in the most important respects: In what you call the ‘unlogical’ and I call the ‘elimination of the conscious will in art’. . . . Every formal procedure which aspires to traditional effects is not completely free from conscious motivation. But art belongs to theunconscious! One must express oneself! Express oneself directly! Not one’s taste, or one’s upbringing, or one’s intelligence, knowledge or skill. Not all theseacquired characteristics, but that which is inborn, instinctive. . . . But whoever is capable of listening to himself, recognizing his own instincts, and also engrossing himself reflectively in every problem, will not need such crutches. One does not need to be a pioneer to create in this way, only a man who takes himself seriously – and thereby takes seriously that which is the true task of humanity in every intellectual or artistic field: to recognize, and to express what one has recognized!!! This is my belief.”

7:30 pm "JOHNNY CASH:The THE LIFE" is a Book Discussion with author ROBERT HILBURN at the GRAMMY Museum, 800 W Olympic Bl (entrance on Figueroa), L.A. 90015.
+
FREE, reservation required.
+
Having just marked the 10 year anniversary of Johnny Cash’s death this, his status as one of the greatest music legends continues to grow. In "Johnny Cash: The Life" (Little, Brown; Oct 29, 2013), veteran music journalist Robert Hilburn writes the long-awaited, definitive biography on Cash. It is the book Cash’s millions of fans have been waiting for, and it is the book that will lead a new generation to discover his incredible musical legacy.
+
Hilburn, one of the most widely read and respected pop music writers, was the music critic for the Los Angeles Times for more than three decades. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee, he has reported extensively on music legends, including Bob Dylan, Elton John, Bruce Springrsteen, U2, Michael Jackson, and John Lennon.
+
Hillburn knew Cash well, reporting on him at many different points in his career from the legendary Folsom Prison concert in 1968 — where he was the only music journalist attending — to his wrenching last days.
+
In "Johnny Cash: The Life," Hilburn tells the complete story of Johnny Cash for the first time. Hilburn treats Cash with the critical eye and historical scholarship that an artist of his stature deserves.
+
Despite his enormous popularity, and cross-over appeal (with the rare honor of induction in the Country, Rock and Roll and Gospel Hall of Fames), Cash was an even more important and influential artist and a more complex, troubled person than even his biggest fans have realized yet. Hilburn shares a trove of never-before-seen material, straight from the singer’s inner circle of family and friends.
+
The GRAMMY Museum welcomes Hilburn to the Clive Davis Theater to discuss the phenomenal career of Johnny Cash, as well as the development of the book, just days after its release. After the discussion, moderated by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, Hilburn will sign copies of the book.
+
Admission is free; reservations required. Museum members receive priority seating. To reserve your seats, e-mail programs@grammymuseum.org.

+
Handpicked by another famous pianist, Billy Joel, to star in the Broadway musical “Movin’ Out” in 2001, Cavanaugh quickly gained a reputation for his skillful talents on the piano and lead vocals rivaling those of the “Piano Man” himself. After the musical closed in 2005, he began touring on his own, reinterpreting the modern pop/rock songbook, and eventually bringing his “Songs of Billy Joel and More” to a full house at the Symphony’s Fourth of July concert in 2009. Cavanaugh returns to bring his exuberant energy to the music of the “Rocket Man,” for a performance of songs such as “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Benny and the Jets,” “Daniel,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Candle in the Wind” and more—all backed by the lush sounds of the Symphony.

8 pm Monthly "CAMARILLO CAFE CONCERT SERIES" brings the return of Northern Cal's HOUSTON JONES, widely-traveled festival favorites, at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E Burnley St, Camarillo 93010; whatshappening@camarillocafe.com
+
Houston Jones performs a strong original repertoire that ranges from bluegrass and folk to blues and gospel. Three of its members were among the original members of the legendary band THE WAYBACKS. They frequently perform for standing-room-only audiences, including their previous appearance at the Camarillo Café Concert Series (so arrive early for a good seat!)
+
They’ve been a big hit at every festival they’ve played, including Telluride, Sisters, American River, Mill Pond, Strawberry (where they were voted “best new discovery” and “best vocalist”). +
At the Mill Pond Music Festival in September, all the musicians backstage stopped talking and scurrying around so they could hear HOUSTON JONES play.
+
Houston Jones features Glenn Houston (lead guitar), Travis Jones (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), Peter Tucker (drums and percussion), Chris Kee (standup bass, cello and guitar), and Henry Salvia (keyboards and accordion).
+
"As good as any singing and picking I've heard in my thirty years in the music business. Do your friends a big favor, and turn them on to this band!" -- Bob Brown, Owner, Rancho Nicasio, and manager, Huey Lewis and the News.
+
More at www.HoustonJones.com
+
The series is booked and hosted by Kathy and Gary Lynch, and sponsored by the Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District, Jane Raab Recreation Supervisor.
+
Doors at 7:30 pm for the best seats.
+
Although not an actual café, the Camarillo Café is a delightful, intimate, smoke-free and alcohol-free coffeehouse-style concert series hosted by Gary & Kathy Lynch in Camarillo, California. On the third Friday in January, March, May, July, September and November, the finest singers, songwriters and musicians from the Southern California area and beyond will entertain you.
+
Admission $20 at the door, includes complimentary refreshments.

Fri, Nov 15, at UCLA:
8 pm CHARLES LLOYD & FRIENDS play the Center for the Art of Performance (CAP) series in Royce Hall at UCLA.
+
“A technical descendant of John Coltrane and Dewey Redman, tenor saxophonist Charles Lloyd has a way of touching the soul with his tender, folk-tinged melodies.” -- Seattle Times.
+
“There has not been a saxist whose work is this spiritual since John Coltrane and Albert Ayler.” --The Boston Globe
+
Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA presents a rare Los Angeles performance from saxophone great Charles Lloyd, backed by the guitar wizardry of Bill Frisell alongside Eric Harland on drums and Reuben Rogers on bass.
+
Tenor saxophone titan Charles Lloyd attained rock star status in the mid-60s with one of the all-time great quartets, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Since the release of that group’s “Dream Weaver” and “Forest Flower,” Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. Over the past 20 years his extraordinary ECM albums have featured collaborations with Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Zakir Hussain, Billy Higgins and more.
+
This special configuration includes key members of Lloyd’s creative and versatile “new quartet” — drummer and bandleader Eric Harland and adventurous bassist Reuben Rogers. Bill Frisell, one of “the big three” in jazz guitar (along with John Scofield and Pat Metheny) joins the ensemble for a revelatory evening of jazz performance.
+
“Music is a healing force,” the 75-year-old Lloyd says. “It has the ability to transcend boundaries, it can touch the heart directly; it can speak to a depth of the spirit where no words are needed. It is a most powerful form of communication and expression of beauty. We must go forward, all the great ones that went before us insisted on this. For each generation, it is incumbent upon us to rise up and sing the song - the journey and pursuit is unending.”
+
Tix: general tickets ($30-$50) are available at cap.ucla.edu, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 310-825-2101, or in person at the UCLA Central Ticket Office located in the southwest corner of the James West Alumni Center.
+
UCLA students may purchase tickets for $20 in advance. Student rush tickets, subject to availability, are offered at the same price one hour before show time to all students with valid ID.

Sat, Nov 16, in La Verne:
7 pm THE LINDY SISTERS bring "A Swingin’ Musical Tribute to 'The Greatest Generation,'”
presented by the Cultural Arts Society of La Verne, at the Meeting House at Hillcrest, , 2705 Mountain View Dr, La Verne.
+
This tribute to "The Greatest Generation” is a full-length musical stage-show about the time and the people whose music captured the heart of World War II America. Sit back and let The Lindy Sisters -- Lynette, Loralie, and Linda Lou -- take you on a sentimental journey as you enjoy the vibrant and poignant works of Glenn Miller, Louis Prima, The Andrews Sisters, Kay Kyser, Benny Goodman, Kitty Kallen, Harry James, and many more. With a live band and a perfect blend of comedy, nostalgia and audience participation, this show is a slam-dunk hit for audiences who appreciate the music and history of the WW II era.
+
Singing together seems as natural as breathing to this trio, who have quickly become one of the most sought-after specialty acts in the Los Angeles area. Masters of 1940s melodies, these sweethearts have been mesmerizing audiences with their luscious harmonies from coast to coast – harmonies so tight you couldn’t slide a credit card between them. Every detail of their act from the scrumptious vocal arrangements to the seamed stockings and ruby red lips smacks of classic vintage swing.
+
Hold onto your fedora and grab your stompers (yes, there will be a dance floor) and head back in time to an era when things were simpler, it was easy to tell the good guys from the bad, and America was united in a common goal.
+
Tickets can be purchased in the lobby of The Meeting House, Monday through Saturday, 8 am-4 pm, or online at www.livingathillcrest.org/newseventscas.html
