Go,  But  Watch  Out  For  GOCE

by Larry Wines

Lots happening this weekend. Plenty of nice Veterans Day activities.

As long as you don't get clobbered by GOCE. (Pronounced "go-chay.")

It's not some chupacabra or some mythical demon Limbaugh says is coming to devour you and your freedom to die without access to a doctor. This one is real. GOCE is a hefty monster, at more than 2400 pounds, 17 feet long, and over 3 feet in diameter.

It is coming for us -- more accurately, back to us. And it will hit somewhere -- probably Sunday or Monday -- as it unceremoniously falls out of its 167-mile-high orbit and careens in flaming glory through the atmosphere, stopping when it hits the ground -- or the water -- at a very high speed.

Last week's OC meteor was just a warm-up. A piker. Johnny Guitar the Shooting Star.

Not this time. This is grab-your-brain-bucket-and-steel-umbrella-and-hunker-down time.

Launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2009, GOCE was not intended as an experiment to see what took out the dinosaurs.

A 350-million-Euro project, GOCE has been up there studying the Earth's gravitational field and related ocean currents. Which is rather ironic, since "Gravity," as in the movie, is the operative factor here. And everybody hopes it hits an ocean instead of their house. (GOCE's full name is Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer -- rather unwieldy, like the lovely Latina your cousin married whose old-school parents named her Maria Conchita Sophia Dulcinea Savannah Segunda.)

Like a high school kid on a Saturday night date, GOCE ran out of gas. As hideously expensive as gas is at the corner mini-mart, imagine stopping at a station in orbit to tank-up and grab a high-fructose-laden / salt-saturated snack.

Except there aren't any gas stations in orbit -- diesel either -- or any other propellant. Everything up there is in its own orbit so it won't smack into your TV shopping channel satellite or the International Space Station or Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Now, as long as GOCE doesn't smack into any of us when it returns to Earth like that Acme Safe falling on Wile E. Coyote as the Road Runner watches.

We really need to coordinate these things. If GOCE could just hit Typhoon Haiyan, we could consolidate our concerns. And we’d have a viral video that would beat the cat-playing-piano on YouTube.

From the comedic, above, to the very solemn, here.

JACARANDA played a November 9 concert titled “SHATTERED GLASS,” as an observance of “Kristallnacht,” on the exact date of the 75th anniversary. It featured music by Arnold Schoenberg & Eric Zeisl, among others.

“Kristallnacht” was celebrated by the Nazis. It was the terrifying “Night of Broken Glass” on which the windows of shops and homes owned by Jews were shattered by Brown Shirts. It is among the horrifying events remembered by the Jewish people and all who champion human rights as a way to pledge that “never again” will humanity endure such events at the hands of our fellow man.

A lovely piece in the Santa Monica Lookout about the November 9 concert includes an observation of the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Read it at:

BOB LIND inducted into Colorado Music Hall of Fame;
headlining AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL,
today in Miami, Sunday, November 10th …

This past Friday in Denver, the “Colorado Music Hall of Fame” held its induction ceremony and concert, honoring BOB LIND. Famous since the ’60s for his hit, “Elusive Butterfly of Love,” Bob Lind has been a fixture on the nu-folk / pop-folk scene for decades.

He had hardly had time to digest the news that he would be traveling to the Mile High City to be honored. Then, hot on the heels of learning of that honor, Bob was asked to headline the free “AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL” at SoBe Institute of the Arts in Miami – in his home state of Florida – just two days later, on Sunday (today), November 10th.

“Yes,” he quipped, “some people actually think I'm a ‘folk singer.’ If you don't tell them the truth, I won't either. It's a great opportunity to appear with some killer acoustic acts who'll be gracing that stage with me.”

If you’re near Miami, the “American Folk Music Festival” happens at SoBe Institute of the Arts, 2100 Washington Av, Miami Beach, FL 33139. Bob’s set is 5:40-6:25 pm.
Free & Open to the Public
Info: sobearts.org

On Friday, November 8, he was at the Paramount Theatre in Denver for his induction to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

He recently talked about all of it, and the longevity of his music career, on the “Michael Stock Show” on WLRN radio; check it out in the archive at www.WLRN.org.

Details on today’s festival and the radio show are on the “Gigs” page of Bob’s web site, at: http://boblind.com

Our congratulations to a good entertainer and a nice guy!

+
SCHEDULE:
+
Saturday, November 9 at 11 am: “The Missing Pages of Lewis Carroll,” by Lily Blau, conceived by Lily Blau and Sydney Gallas. Using a highly visual and poetic approach, The Missing Pages of Lewis Carroll tells a dark version of the story behind Alice in Wonderland. Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, experienced a charged and ambiguous relationship with Alice Lidell, his 11-year-old muse. As the real world merges with the story he creates, life and art push together at the constrictions of society, and the storyteller becomes invisibly woven into his own tale.
+
Saturday, November 9 at 2:30 pm: “Habeas Corpus,” by Emilie Beck. A mother who couldn't protect her sons; a teacher who couldn't save her students; a young woman who can't let herself be loved; a prisoner on Death Row who can't let himself be saved; the warden who finds friendship in the darkest rooms: these stories connect and intersect, exploring the ways in which we are emotionally imprisoned, and how much we are affected by the limitations of those who love us most. At its heart, Habeas Corpus illuminates how perpetrators are also victims, and the saviors are also damned.
+
Sunday, November 10 at 11 am: “My Barking Dog,” by Eric Coble. Two lonely apartment dwellers' lives take a turn for the bizarre when a starving coyote begins frequenting their fire escape. My Barking Dog examines the sometimes indistinguishable line between human and animal behavior. Thrilling twists and viscerally poetic language combine to create a unique look at those who are striving for connection in a disjointed world.
+
Sunday, November 10 at 1:30 pm: “Dark Room,” by George Brant. Dark Room is a dream-like journey into the haunting photographs of Francesca Woodman, a gifted artist who created a fascinating body of work before taking her life at the age of 22. A highly physical and lyrical investigation of creative impulses, the legacies of desire, and the fragmented nature of that which we leave behind.
