Two of the three events listed here are those “not-music-but-cool” things the Guide includes from time-to-time, because all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This time around, all three happen at USC, in January.
Ticket Alert #1…
★ “COLLECTING THE COSMOS” – about the search for planets outside our solar system, tied to an on-campus art exhibition -- happens Friday, January 24, at 4 pm on the USC Campus in University Park, L.A.
Admission is free and open to everyone, but reservations are required and you’ll find there’s no room at the inn if you dawdle.
It’s not every day that you hunt for planets inside a library. (It’ll be in the Friends of the USC Libraries Lecture Hall, Doheny Memorial Library 240.) Dramatizing NASA’s search for planets outside our solar system, Dan Goods and David Delgado’s art installation “Hidden Light” simulates the process by which astronomers look for Earth-like objects throughout the galaxy by spotting the dimming of a star’s light as a planet crosses in front of it.
Explore the intersections of scientific knowledge and artistic innovation in a fascinating conversation with Goods and Delgado of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and USC professors Clifford Johnson (Physics and Astronomy) and Holly Willis (Institute for Multimedia Literacy).

♪ (2) JOHN PRINE DOING WELL FOLLOWING CANCER SURGERY, DEC 9
John Prine is a true legend of American songwriting. His influence has been felt by hundreds of artists who love and record his songs and by millions of fans who are touched by those songs. Rarely has a performing songwriter reached so far beyond his or her own performances and recordings.
John is no stranger to cancer. He’s beaten it before. But in recent days, he anounced that it was back, and his lung was involved. On Monday, December 9, 2013, John underwent surgery. The initial reports following surgery are very good. Even before the surgery, his doctors expected a full recovery because it was caught early.
Indeed, John made it through Monday’s surgery without incident, and John’s doctor reported to the family that he was very pleased. John was in the recovery room when we received the report late Monday. It is expected that he will be in the hospital about four days.
The Guide’s chief source is Chicago-based Marina Jason, a longtime friend of John Prine and many other legendary folk artists. Marina has been careful and conscientious in reporting on John’s medical condition and she clears everything with John’s family.
*** Late update, Tuesday, after 5 pm, Pacific. Marina Jason reports, "John made an unexpected trip to the hospital gift shop yesterday evening. He had dinner and decided that he wanted to buy the newspapers. Imagine that. Going through surgery and then having the where with all to take yourself down to the hospital gift shop. He had a bit of a stomach upset after that and the doctors ordered him to relax. Hopefully, he is listening. You cannot keep a good man down."
When his family says he’s ready for your get-well cards and wishes, we’ll give you an address. Meantime, the nature of social media as a free-for-all has caused Marina to set some rules that banned “speculating on things” when she provides information.
In return, Marina says, “I promise, I will update all of you with information that will be received directly from the family. I am very protective of John, Billy and the rest of the family.”
Marina added, “There’s a recent and fine article on John Prine by Peter Cooper of the [Nashville] Tennessean newspaper. It's not about John's health but rather, about his life and his career, which are being celebrated with a major exhibit in Nashville.” Read it online at:

♪ (6) PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FRANK FAIRFIELD – Side Arm Fiddle Extraordinaire
by Michele Marotta
All I can say is "WOW, incredible and unbelievable!" Frank Fairfield is a youthful old time folk musician who looks like a young Mark Twain. He plays fiddle, guitar and banjo while singing, dancing and hollering. He is an unbelievable word-of-mouth sensation who channels spirits of another era in his spellbinding live shows.
It’s hard to believe he is originally from California – from the South Central area of Los Angeles. His eclectic sets feature soaring hillbilly ballads, arcane rambling songs, and murder ballads, all delivered in a reedy tenor with that irresistible American Primitive quality. He’s still in his twenties, but steeped in the pre-War Americana of Mississippi John Hurt and Dock Boggs. It doesn’t seem possible that he cut his teeth as a street performer in L.A. Listening to him makes you envision very different geographies. Frank Fairfield has the raw intensity and quick-fingered technique to make your hair stand on end.
Alternating among banjo (five and six string), fiddle and guitar, he performs a different set of traditional songs and originals each night, drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of the American folk canon. He also plays harmonica, and several other instruments in the pre-war American style.
He was handpicked by Fleet Foxes to open for them on their 2008 US tour. Since then, he has found fans elsewhere, including the likes of Ry Cooder, CW Stoneking, Charlie Parr, and Grammy winning producer Chris King (Charley Patton, “People Take Warning” box set).
Frank Fairfield has released two albums on Tompkins Square -- home label of Michael Chapman and James Blackshaw. Frank’s first was a collection of traditional music on 2009′s “Eponymous” album, followed by “Out on the Open West” in 2010, featuring his own originals and a cast of guest musicians. Both albums brought rave reviews across the board.
Frank is an ardent 78 rpm collector and has compiled a selection of rare and unheralded gramophone recordings from around the world, entitled, “Unheard Ofs & Forgotten Abouts.” Read about or order on the label’s link: www.tompkinssquare.com/frank_fairfield_1.html

STACEY EARLE posted this story from the road, near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on December 6...
“So my good friend Mike Satterwhite gave me some good advice on keeping up with reading glasses. I can't ever seem to find them when I need them which has become all the time now.
“Mike told me to go down to the local dollar store and buy several cheap pairs and place them all over the house.
“So I did . I purchased 7 pairs. I hung one on a handle in the kitchen by the stove. I placed one on the table by my sofa and one by my favorite chair. I placed one on my bedside table. One pair in the bathroom by the sink. I then placed one in my car and finally one in my purse.
“Well, tonight at the venue, I could not find a pair of glasses while selling merch after the show at Godfrey Daniels. I was trying to use my square credit card app with my arm stretched out further then I have ever stretched before – not that it did any good.
“It was very frustrating. But all went well the show was a blast! I had not played a show in seven months. Merch sales were great! And we thanked everyone for risking the weather to come out to the show.
“We made it to our hotel room after the show and I went over to the mirror to start the night routine of getting ready for bed, and what did I find ?
“One pair of glasses hooked on the front of my shirt. One pair of glasses on top of my hat. And when I took my hat off, I found another pair on top of my head that was under my hat .
“Soooo I know one of the pairs belong in my purse and another one belongs in the car. So which pair of glasses are missing from home? Mmmmmmm.”

He hangs-out in Hollywood and creates wonderful street photography, some of which is currently exhibited in a galler. And he crafts songs that range from “Angelyne” to UFO's to Halloween. David Harvey says, “Paul has the pure wonder of a beamish boy melded with the time worn wisdom of a sage of old. He always makes me smile!” More at www.myspace.com/paulzollo and www.bluerailroad.com

+
The two, in their holiday concert, perform self-penned Christmas songs from their classic jazz CD “Send Me Some Snow.” With Rodney Lee, Dan Lutz and David Karasony.
+
“Chris Standring is in stellar six string form throughout this highly organic spin on holiday cheer and teams up well with vocalist Kathrin Shorr. Part old school and orchestrated with just a dash of pop gloss for finish, tunes such as the snappy opener ‘Send Me Some Snow’ are done with style, taste and pizazz while backed by some of the finest studio musicians available. As a songwriting team Standring could not have been teamed with a better partner with Shorr’s vocals offering up an intoxicating warmth and inflection few vocalists can be taught much less deliver with such ease. Chris Standring while a virtuoso guitarist opts for the more zen like less is more approach for a real ensemble feel that is infectious as it subtle. So if you are just the least bit toasted by some of the same Christmas music that seems to be as tired and predictable as the tie received each year for Christmas. Send Me Some Snow should go well in any hot rotation! Some old fashioned holiday fun to warm even the heart of this Christmas grinch!” – Brent Black, Jazz Review.
+
“To put it bluntly, I was blown away. From the very first song, I was hooked. This is easily the best Christmas CD I have heard in years. If you are tired of hearing the same old songs and you want new music that captures the season, this is the CD to get.” – JJ Biener, www.musesmuse.com

+
Patrick Ball has made numerous appearances at Caltech, each time performing a completely different show, sometimes solo, and sometimes with other musicians, and usually combining his stellar harp playing with dramatic performance, interweaving the music with stories and tales from Ireland. Patrick plays the Celtic harp of centuries ago, solid brass strings and a hardwood maple body. This performance, “Christmas Rose,” is solo and Patrick's own words can best describe it:
+
"Some years ago, I recorded a Christmas / Winter season CD and gave it the name of The Christmas Rose because it includes a very beautiful traditional melody that my mother loved and used to sing in her childhood. This recording was awarded the National Association of Independent Record Distributors Indie Award for Best Seasonal Recording of 1991, became a best seller in its own small way, and prompted many requests for a live concert which would feature the pieces on this recording and a selection of beloved Holiday stories.”
+
Patrick continues, “So, I stepped into a magical world of English and Irish literature, Celtic legend and traditional folk beliefs and drew out tales such as A Child's Christmas in Wales, chapters from The Wind in the Willows, and passages from Shakespeare, William Butler Yeats, and Thomas Hardy, and mingled them with beloved pieces of seasonal music. All of the stories and all of the music touch on what is, to my way of thinking, the central message of the Christmas/Winter season: hope. Hope for something wondrous. Hope for a light in the darkness."

Sat, Dec 28, in Altadena:
3 pm THE MurMURATORS, the Irish music trio of vocalist/guitarist Swan Montgomery, harpist Carol Tatum, and bassist Jim Wootten, play a matinee at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena; reservations, 626-798-6236.
+
Born in Drogheda, Ireland, vocalist Swan Montgomery is known for his role as “Robert Plant” in the internationally successful tribute band "Led Zepagain." Montgomery has toured the world and performed sold-out shows from Sarajevo to Japan. But in spite of that success, performing well-loved Irish tunes in a modern, even “rebellious” manner, has been a lifelong desire of Swan's -- a dream that comes true with The MurMurators.
+
Former Windham Hill recording artist Carol Tatum is harpist for “The MurMurators.” Carol is best known as the founding member of the neoclassical harp / flute / cello band “Angels of Venice” (whose Christmas album is a Guide favorite). Carol is co-writer for three albums by the Led Zeppelin-inspired rock band “Kingdom Come.” In addition, she is a skilled songwriter, arranger and producer, and she collaborated with Swan Montgomery to create The MurMurators new song arrangements.
+
Bassist Jim Wootten performs with Swan Montgomery in “Led Zepagain.” Jim is the nephew of Les Paul and Mary Ford. He performs with many bands including “The Long Run”, the world’s premiere Eagles tribute band, and “Four Way Street” (CSNY). Jim is known for his solid, tasteful musicianship, attention to detail, and ability as a multi-instrumentalist.
+
Recent reviews of The MurMurators: "Wildly original……(sounds like) songs by Robert Plant if, at the end of the 1960s, he decided to record a few Irish standards... virtually every song carries in itself a huge dose of surprise… well arranged and played…Irish songs inspired by classic rock… ‘No Quarter’ by Led Zeppelin (is) the icing on the cake… ~ Rafa Chojnacki, Folkowa.PL

Today he stands as a mature creative force, made more sensitive, yet also toughened by life’s adventures. Lang has learned what it means to rise above hard times and to find meaning where chaos seemed to rule. With his latest release, "Fight For My Soul," he is entering a chapter wherein he has found his true voice.
+
This sense of who he wants to be is at the core of the album. Lang says, “The inspiration for the songs on the record vary widely. Some are about personal struggles, some are focused on injustices I have seen. Some are random fictional stories that hopefully can relate to people in some way that is a blessing to them. I’ve wanted to make this album for a long time. Creatively, I think there is a lot more going on inside of me than I’ve been sharing on recordings.”
+
This grass roots approach was new to Lang, whose four earlier studio albums were written and crafted under the watch of his previous record labels. He finds it a welcome change. After Lang released his Grammy-winning "Turn Around" in 2007, he made the decision to forego the major label route and became an independent artist. The first result was 2009’s "Live At the Ryman," but "Fight For My Soul," by its nature, is his first fully realized artistic achievement through his own label, SayRai Music.
+
Lang's chosen path has brought the opportunity to interact with some of the most respected legends in music. On the way up, he's shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, B.B. King, Aerosmith, Sting, and Buddy Guy -- who he continues to tour with today.
+
As a 12-year-old, he began a journey in Fargo, ND, that has brought him to points across the Globe. As he looks on the near-term future, he shares, “With this album, I really look forward to bringing our music to people in places where I’ve never been before. Music is one of the greatest conveyers of ideas and emotions, and in a sense that doesn’t have as much to do with the individual performing, but the power of the connection. One of my goals is the music can be a blessing to the people listening to it in some way. And if Fight For My Soul can help somebody by making them feel better or that they’re not alone, that’s my idea of success for this album."

The multi-platinum, Grammy® award-winning band Chicago will perform at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre on Sunday, February 9. Hailed as one of the “most important bands in music since the dawn of the rock and roll era” by former President Bill Clinton, the legendary rock and roll band with horns, Chicago, is the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in six decades. From the signature sound of the Chicago horns, their iconic Vocalists, and a few dozen of ever-Classic Songs, this band’s concerts are celebrations. The band is now in their 48th consecutive year of touring, without missing a single concert date!
In March of 2013, Chicago’s multi-platinum two-disc bestseller, The Very Best Of Chicago, Only The Beginning charted at #1 on two Billboard charts: the Catalog Chart, and the Digital Catalog chart. In Billboard Magazine’s list of Top 100 artists of all time, Chicago came in at #13, the highest charting American band.
Chicago is currently recording new songs. Fans are being offered clips of works in progress on the band’s website, www.chicagotheband.com. The band is planning on releasing two songs at a time digitally throughout this year and then eventually compiling them into a CD or some other format. One of these songs is a cover of the great Spiral Starecase hit, “More Today Than Yesterday.” The first new Chicago song released was “Somethin’ Comin,’ I Know,” which was recorded on the road. A new studio track, “America,” was released on September 24, 2013. CNN called it the “Shutdown Song.”
Lifetime achievements include a Grammy Award, multiple American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Chicago street dedicated in their honor, and keys to and proclamations from an impressive list of US cities. Record sales top the 100,000,000 mark, and include 21 Top 10 singles, 5 consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One singles and 5 Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 34 albums have been certified platinum, and the band has a total of 47 gold and platinum awards.
The line-up includes original band members Robert Lamm on keyboards, vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone and Walt Parazaider on woodwinds, as well as Jason Scheff on bass, vocals, Tris Imboden on drums, Keith Howland on guitar, Lou Pardini on keyboards, vocals and Wally Reyes on percussion.
