♪   CD Release today: 8 Ball Aitken

AUSSIE 8 BALL AITKEN'S NASHVILLE CD RELEASES TODAY

He’s the high-energy folkie from the Outback who took the 2013 “L.A. Irish Fair” festival and numerous U.S. and L.A. venues by storm this past spring. Yes, he does Celtic songs, with an Australian flair -- think of the traditional, “Bound for South Australia,” but imagine it was written in our time. That’ll give you some idea – of part of what he does. He also does very wild ‘n crazy funny songs.

These days, his experience of the States and musical idioms found here are likewise an influence.

8 Ball Aitken’s brand-new Nashville-recorded album “SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE” sees its official released in Australia today, Friday, December 6, through Phoenix Movement Records and MGM Distribution Australia.

If you’re a US fan, you can get a signed copy from 8 Ball’s pre-release stash. It’ll arrive personally signed (remember to request that when placing your order).

Email him through his web site and he’ll send you the PayPal or direct deposit details:

www.8ballaitken.com

8 Ball just played Sydney, before heading south to Victorian and South Australian gigs, and his success with the home folks gets new shows added all the time, so we’re not sure when he’ll get back to our hemisphere.

8 Ball sends a special thank you to all who were involved in making “SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE” come to life. The project was fan-funded. And he thanks all the radio and media here and abroad who are playing the new album’s first single, “I’M GOING TO JAIL,” and the musicians who played on the album and who play live with him at the shows. That’s a nice thing to do, when the temptation is to talk about nothing but the album itself.

8-8:45pm -- PIPER-GREY is the pop-folk duo of DAVID PIPER and EARL GREY, long known individually throughout Southern California's "Acoustic Underground" for their solo work, and a Trough Records recording duo for the past few years. David Piper has released three albums on the Trough label, most recently “Lemonade Shoes” in 2005, which debuted on radio’s “Tied to the Tracks.” Earl Grey’s “Lover's Ridge” album is widely regarded as one of the finest acoustic-rock CDs to emerge from L.A.'s acoustic music scene. Each has earned highly-regarded reputations in his own right. In 2006, David and Earl began sitting-in on the other's live performances, and Piper-Grey was born. Piper's classic blues / folk guitar licks and playful sense of humor, and Grey's guitar wizardry, sixties-style lyricism and musicality, combines with the beauty of their tenor voices singing in duet. They’ve literally made audiences stop what they were doing to listen. Their debut album, “Apples” (Trough Records, 2008), won high praise from such respected publications as American Songwriters Magazine, which ranked "Apples" the 4th best album that year. Piper-Grey collaborates on carefully-crafted Americana / folk-pop music. More at www.piper-grey.com

Fri, Dec 6, & Fri’s & Sat’s in Dec, in Santa Monica.
7:30 & 9 pm  “KURT WEILL AT THE CUTTLEFISH HOTEL” has its official opening night tonight at the newly contrived “The West End Theater” hanging over the ocean at the far end of the Santa Monica Monica Pier.
+
Performances run Thursdays & Fridays in December, beginning with a Dec 5 preview.
+
This is one of those improbably “only-in-L.A.” (okay, or only-in-Santa Monica) tales. Seems the Santa Monica Pier Corporation has joined forces with Tony Award winning actor / director Paul Sand to present live theater on the pier, appropriately named The West End Theater. That’s about as far west as you can get in L.A. This is how it happened.
+
Paul is eager to tell the story:
+
“I was taking a walk on the pier with a couple of friends one night recently and I suddenly thought... Wouldn’t this pier be a perfect place to have a theater and present a vivid production of KURT WEILL’S dark, theatrical waterfront songs all about revenge, murder and broken hearts. The next day I contacted Jim Harris, the Deputy Director of the pier and pitched him the idea. He smiled and said ‘O.K., we’ve been wanting to add live theater for the pier and I happen to have an available space at the far west end. It hangs out over the ocean and gets pretty wild up there some time, would that suit you?’”
+
“You bet it would!” said Sand. Jim wound up the conversation with, ”What do you think of calling it The West End Theater? “I can think of nothing better,” said Sand.
+
Paul then contacted a few beautiful, powerful and intense actors, who can also sing, which he had placed in his “remember that talent” part of his brain. Happily they all agreed to play. He called his friend Carol Sills, wife and widow of the legendary director Paul Sills who created Second City and Story Theater and with whom Sand had worked with his entire adult life. Carol Sills found Michael Roth, the musical director, who happens to be a Kurt Weill expert living right here in Santa Monica (a block away from Bertolt Brecht’s old house on 26th St.) “Turns out the guy is brilliant” says Sand. Roth accepted. So did Marie Lalanne, the truly extraordinary surrealist painter, who came aboard to design the costumes and create the murals on huge canvas panels in keeping with the carnival atmosphere of the pier. And, the entire company was formed in less than two weeks.
+
The list of Mr. Weill’s songs (so far) to be performed by the “dreamy” ensemble includes: “Mack the Knife,” and “Surabaya Johnny,” performed by the beautiful, tall and angry, (in a good way) SHAY ASTAR. Then there’s “Pirate Jenny” and “Barbara Song,” performed by the beautiful, incandescent MEGAN RIPPEY. Plus, “Luck Song” aka “On the Insufficiency of Human Behavior,” performed by SOL MASON, a tall lanky attractive kid on the wisely cynical side, who plays the host in this shady waterfront cabaret.
+
“A Final and Horrific Verse of Mack the Knife” will be performed by PAUL SAND (as Mack) who is obsessed with his own version of justice and insatiable desire for revenge.
+
“The Alabama Song” finale is the whole company singing goodnight to the audience from under a red spotlight.
+
The preview night is Dec 5, and the Opening Gala is Dec 6. There are two 45-minute shows each Friday and Saturday night, at 7:30 and 9 pm, throughout December.

The ACOUSTIC AMERICANA MUSIC GUIDE endeavors to bring you NEWS and views of interest to artists everywhere, more specifically to musicians and the creative community, and music makers and fans of acoustic and Folk-Americana music, both traditional and innovative. We provide a wealth of resources, including a HUGE catalog of acoustic-friendly venues, and schedules of performances in Southern California venues large and small. We cover workshops and other events for artists and folks in the music industry, and all kids o’ things in the world of acoustic and Americana and accessible classical music. From washtub bass to musical spoons to oboe to viola to banjo to squeezebox, from Djangostyle to new-fangled-old-time string band music, from sweet Cajun fiddle to pre-bluegrass Appalachian mountain music to proto blues.
