♪  In Memoriam: JOHN LENNON

On December 8, 1980, John Lennon’s life was ended by an assassin’s bullets in front of the Dakota, where he and his wife Yoko Ono lived.

Tonight, in Venice, California, from 7:30-9:30 pm, you can attend "IN MEMORIAM: JOHN LENNON," hosted by ROSS ALTMAN, with performances by PAUL ZOLLO, JEFF GOLD, ROBERT WAYNE, JILL FENIMORE, and ESAU ALEMAN.

It’s at The Talking Stick Coffee Lounge, 1411 Lincoln Bl, Venice 90291; 310-450-6052.

John Lennon was one of the great artists of the 20th century — both as a member of the Beatles and on his own. John & Yoko had moved to New York City to get away from the madness of England’s tabloid press, but he couldn’t escape the madness of America’s gun culture. A gunman pursued him relentlessly, and took his life, as had befallen President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and, a hundred years earlier, President Abraham Lincoln.

The songwriter whose song “Imagine” had envisioned a world without war, greed and hunger, could not have imagined a world free of crazed music fans whose admiration could so quickly turn to spiteful and vengeful hate.

In the years since John Lennon was murdered his music has continued to fill the void in the lives of those who loved him, and on this 33rd anniversary of his death, musicians gather to give thanks for his life and remember his musical and political legacy.

Join them at The Talking Stick to, as host Ross Altman says, "sing some of his great songs and reflect on America’s possession by the gun lobby controlled by the NRA." They add, "For John Lennon is not the only victim of its murderous tyranny or misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment. Just this year we have seen Trayvon Martin gunned down in Sanford, Florida, by a vigilante who since a clueless Florida jury acquitted him of murder has been in custody four additional times for acts of rage and the threat of gun-violence. Thank the NRA.”

Ross continues, "In Aurora, Colorado, a coward invaded a cultural temple — a movie theatre premiering the Dark Night Rises, third in the Batman series — and gunned-down twelve innocent young audience members — whose own courage in the face of terror was itself inspiring. The lives they saved demonstrated that their deaths were not in vain. Thank the NRA.”

Ross concludes, "And in Newtown, Connecticut, last Christmas yet another 'mad man' (a term we seem to have resorted to in order to conceal the systematic hold the gun manufacturers have on Congress through the NRA) entered a classroom and gunned down 24 children and 4 teachers and administrators. We remember these as well—as both victims and heroes. Thank the NRA."

Free admission; cover is one food or drink purchase to support the venue.

Venue impresario Bob Stane calls them “A wow group. Sophistication and humor and a stunning display on all instruments. You will not believe how deep they are. You will be so impressed and you will stand and scream for encore after encore as did the audience at the last two gigs here. Solid !!!! A must see. Pretend I whispered into your elbow after a show and told you ‘see, and hear, String Madness.’ Do it, please. Guaranteed. Extremely good deal at $15. A gift. Bring guests and out-of-towners and those folks you want to seduce into being slaves to The Coffee Gallery Backstage. Show no quarter. Be like ‘Ming The Merciless.’ String Madness... ‘String band music from Bach to Bop -- and Beyond.’ A fabulous matinee. One of the very best we have ever had. Bring guests.”
+
Beyond Bob’s gushing, here are some facts about this group. Three hot instrumentalists – mandolinist Bob Applebaum and guitarists Mitch Greenhill and Peter Spelman – pool their talents in String Madness. The group has carved out a repertoire of original compositions, string band tunes, and jazz scripture from the Books of Django and Miles. Improvised solos interweave with arranged harmonies and unison lines to propel an exciting musical exploration.
+
Bob Applebaum is a nationally recognized mandolinist with over forty years professional experience in stage, recording, television and film work. He has performed and recorded with the likes of Bela Fleck, John Fogarty, Tony Trischka, Peter Wernick, Byron Berline, Stewart Ducan, Richard Greene, Mason Williams, and Sam Bush. Bob’s CD “All the Way Home” was praised by Bluegrass Unlimited as "the contemporary bluegrass album of the year…” He is coauthor of "Fretboard Roadmaps for Mandolin," published by Hal Leonard.
+
Mitch Greenhill recorded two solo albums for Prestige, now re-issued on Fantasy as "Shepherd of the City Blues," and two albums in collaboration with Mayne Smith. The Boston Globe hailed his "movement and drive and touch that anyone who has ever coped with a guitar cannot but envy." He has produced an array of recordings, including a Grammy-winner for Doc Watson, and has composed and designed music and sound for regional theater, where he has received several Drama-Logue awards, and on Broadway. Mitch has appeared on screen in "The Long Riders" and "Safe."
+
Peter Spelman's extensive history as soloist and band leader includes stints in both Northern and Southern California. Like Bob, Peter cut his eyeteeth in the Greenwich Village musical cauldron, then moved west. He composes much of String Madness's repertoire.
+
In the words of the Los Angeles Wicked Good Newspaper, String Madness is "a sonic lollapalooza, a mystical kinship of passions, a mind-meld of great empathy, a riveting feast of music....They swing, they dig deep, they dazzle, and they mean it all…. Not to be missed! "

Laurence Juber is one of the leading acoustic guitarists of our generation. His masterful fingerstyle playing combines elements of jazz, blues, rock and folk with a distinctive voice that transcends musical boundaries. See him perform and you will understand why Paul McCartney hand-picked him to become lead guitarist for Wings. This is a show for all musical tastes. Sun, Dec 8, in Venice:
7:30-9:30 pm "IN MEMORIAM: JOHN LENNON" hosted by ROSS ALTMAN, with performances by PAUL ZOLLO, JEFF GOLD, ROBERT WAYNE, JILL FENIMORE, and ESAU ALEMAN, at The Talking Stick Coffee Lounge, 1411 Lincoln Bl, Venice 90291; 310-450-6052.
+
On December 8, 1980, John Lennon’s life was ended by an assassin’s bullets in front of the Dakota, where he and his wife Yoko Ono lived.
+
He was one of the great artists of the 20th century — both as a member of the Beatles and on his own.
+
The songwriter who had imagined a world without war, greed and hunger, could not have imagined a world free of crazed music fans whose admiration could so quickly turn to spiteful and vengeful hate.
+
In the years since John Lennon was murdered his music has continued to fill the void in the lives of those who loved him, and on this 33rd anniversary of his death, musicians gather to give thanks for his life and remember his musical and political legacy.
+
Join them at The Talking Stick to, as host Ross Altman says, "sing some of his great songs and reflect on America’s possession by the gun lobby controlled by the NRA." They add, "For John Lennon is not the only victim of its murderous tyranny or misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment. Just this year we have seen Trayvon Martin gunned down in Sanford, Florida, by a vigilante who since a clueless Florida jury acquitted him of murder has been in custody four additional times for acts of rage and the threat of gun-violence. Thank the NRA.”
+
Ross continues, "In Aurora, Colorado, a coward invaded a cultural temple — a movie theatre premiering the Dark Night Rises, third in the Batman series — and gunned-down twelve innocent young audience members — whose own courage in the face of terror was itself inspiring. The lives they saved demonstrated that their deaths were not in vain. Thank the NRA.”
+
Ross concludes, "And in Newtown, Connecticut, last Christmas yet another 'mad man' (a term we seem to have resorted to in order to conceal the systematic hold the gun manufacturers have on Congress through the NRA) entered a classroom and gunned down 24 children and 4 teachers and administrators. We remember these as well—as both victims and heroes. Thank the NRA."

Sun, Dec 8, in Santa Monica:
8 pm  "ERIN McKEOWN'S ANTI HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR" at McCabe's, 3101 Pico Bl, Santa Monica 90405; 310-828-4497.
+
McCabe’s booker Lincoln Myerson tells us, “We welcome back New England punk pop chanteuse Erin McKeown, who brings her Anti-Holiday Spectacular to our back room. Apparently, Ms. McKeown doesn't like the holiday season much, but we like her a lot, and we're pretty sure you will, too. With nine full-length albums, two EPs, and numerous soundtracks to her credit, she has spent the last 15 years crafting a reputation as an original musical voice and a compelling live performer. Active and outspoken on social justice issues and culture, Erin was a 2011-12 fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and, more recently, she's added radio to her resume - blogging and hosting for WNYC New York Public Radio. And then there's the song she wrote via text with her friend Rachel Maddow. Spend some time away from the malls and join McKeown and friends as they provide an antidote to the most wonderful time of the year. We promise you won't be sorry.”
