√  AXS TV TO BROADCAST 2014 “NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL”

“This is an historic undertaking for both the network and the Festival,” marking “the first four-day live music broadcast in television history,” according to AXS. For the second year in a row, if you want to see any of the four-day live broadcast from the Big Easy, you’ll need AXS TV or StubHub. They have the exclusive broadcast rights. Featured performances include Santana, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, The String Cheese Incident, John Fogerty, Alabama Shakes, Boz Scaggs, The Avett Brothers, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, John Hiatt, and many more.

AXS TV will also present an hour-long “BEST OF” special on February 16 at 5 pm (Pacific), “Highlighting the most unforgettable moments of the 2013 ‘New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’.”

AXS TV announced today from its Los Angeles headquarters that this deal “continues its commitment to being TV’s home for live music festivals,” including this big one, “presented by Shell.” StubHub returns as AXS’ official broadcast partner for second straight year.

It’s the 45th annual Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival — or Jazz Fest — a wildly-popular event that attracts over 400,000 visitors each year, with some of music’s biggest names booked to celebrate the culture and passion of the Big Easy.

AXS TV will be on-site at Jazz Fest, with plans to telecast over 24 hours of live coverage from Thursday, May 1 through Sunday, May 4. (The complete dates of the 2014 Jazz Fest are April 25 – May 4.) Much like Jazz Fest itself, the 2014 AXS TV broadcast will feature performances by a wide array of the most popular names in music. The schedule of the entire broadcast will be released in the coming weeks, but the musical stars already confirmed to take part in the TV telecast include:

Of course, there’s a gaggle of pop people / music celebrities along with accomplished musicians. AXS plans to include stage time for Christina Aguilera, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, and others, along with all those we already listed.

AXS TV gives viewers the chance to relive the defining moments from the 44th Annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Sunday, February 16 at 5 pm PT when it airs “BEST OF NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2013.” The special features a diverse group of artists spanning a variety of musical genres and eras, boasting award-winning headliners such as Billy Joel, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Maroon 5, Willie Nelson, Allen Toussaint, Cowboy Mouth, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

√  “COUNTRY BOY: A BLUEGRASS TRIBUTE TO JOHN DENVER” due from Grammy-noms

Grammy-nominated bluegrass band SPECIAL CONSENSUS announced today in Nashville that they are preparinhg to release their guest-laden project featuring DALE ANN BRADLEY, JOHN COWAN, JIM LAUDERDALE, CLAIRE LYNCH, PETER ROWAN, RHONDA VINCENT, MICHAEL CLEVELAND, ALISON BROWN, and more.

Special Consensus is joining forces with contemporary bluegrass music's best on the new album, slated for release on March 25.

“There is a natural affinity between bluegrass musicians and John Denver's repertoire but this is the first purely bluegrass tribute to the iconic singer-songwriter who died in 1997,” says a spokesperson for the band.

“Country Boy” features Special Consensus at the musical center of each track, with a guest cast of Grammy-winning and International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA)-winning vocalists and instrumentalists joining-in. Produced by award-winning musician and Compass Records co-founder ALISON BROWN, the album’s 10 tracks draw from across Denver’s hits and lesser-known songs.

In talking about the genesis for the idea, band founder GREG CAHILL commented, “I’ve met so many people who were affected by John’s music and so many musicians who mention him as an inspiration. It felt like a bluegrass interpretation of his songs would be something really special and might also serve as a way to connect more people to bluegrass music.”

Compass Records tells us, “There is no question that the album achieves some special musical moments – both vocal and instrumental.”

SPECIAL CONSENSUS’ mandolinist RICK FARIS and reigning International Bluegrass Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year CLAIRE LYNCH share lead vocal duties on the album’s first track, ‘Wild Montana Skies,’ their vocal lines perfectly complemented by ROB ICKES’ Dobro. On ‘Country Roads,’ Special Consensus guitarist DUSTIN BENSON and the legendary JOHN COWAN swap verses against a tapestry of banjo and fiddle provided by GREG CAHILL and DEL McCOURY BAND fiddler JASON CARTER. And, in a surprise twist, SPECIAL CONSENSUS delivers an all-instrumental version of ‘Thank God I'm a Country Boy,’ with the twin fiddles of label mate MICHAEL CLEVELAND and session ace BUDDY SPICHER and the twin banjos of GREG CAHILL and ALISON BROWN.

The entire cast of featured guests includes Dale Ann Bradley, Jason Carter, Mike Cleveland, John Cowan, Rob Ickes, Jim Lauderdale, Claire Lynch, Peter Rowan, Buddy Spicher and Rhonda Vincent.

SPECIAL CONSENSUS, the motive power behind the project, was founded in 1975 by banjoist Greg Cahill as a showcase for his urban traditionalist take on bluegrass, which encompasses elements of Chicago blues, swing, newgrass, and country music. Over the ensuing 37 years, the group has seen a myriad of personnel changes and has been the breeding ground for some of the best young stars in bluegrass today, and Josh Williams, Chris Jones and Robbie Fulks are just a few names in a long list of former members who have gone on to build solo careers. Special Consensus maintains a busy year round touring schedule, reaching an eclectic demographic through appearances at festivals, listening rooms, “bluegrass in the schools” programs and symphony appearances. Their 2012 release, “Scratch Gravel Road,” achieved a Grammy-nomination for Best Bluegrass Album.

The lack of clean drinking water has made the struggle for survival incredibly difficult in many African countries. A major contribution to this difficult existence is the lack of clean drinking water, which leads to serious diseases and other problems. In a presentation rich with photos, USC trustee David Dornsife and his wife, Dana, will share their inspiring journey of bringing fresh water, sanitation and hygiene to rural African villages. They will discuss the ups and downs, successes, hard lessons, challenges and blessings they have experienced. Working with World Vision, their water projects have brought water to over 4,500,000 people in ten African countries, and should add 1,400,000 additional people in 2014.
