Chockfull Thursday: Ticket Alerts, Weekend Festivals, & Lots TONIGHT ~ March 27, 2014
.
There is a vast variety of exceptionally fine live music offerings tonight. Plus…
We have the HEADS-UP on this weekend’s FESTIVALS. And…
We have EIGHTEEN fresh TICKET ALERTS in this edition (plus two more reminders of previous alerts), and many of them will give you a jump on everyone else, using the presale passwords we provide.
One thing of special note… three evenings of Appalachian Bluegrass – by way of Canada – with the fiddling magic of the amazing APRIL VERCH BAND – commence tonight at the Ojai Concert Series at 7 pm (see listing), and continue Friday night at 8 pm at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, and Saturday at 8 pm at Caltech in a show presented by the Pasadena Folk Music Society. Pick one, because she is not to be missed.
Speaking of TICKET ALERTS, Tuesday’s edition brought you a bunch of ’em, too (and they are NOT repeated here), plus fresh NEWS, and THREE REVIEWS of albums that were released that day. It’s still available, at a separate click.
But let’s not miss anything happening TONIGHT. After we bring you, as always, a few notations on today’s history and some special birthdays. Let’s get started!

MARCH 27th in history…
Today is “NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY,” apparently proclaimed officially somewhere, by some obscure governing body or other. And there is an appropriate show to commemorate it tonight at 8 pm at the Coffee Gallery Backstage; see the events listings.
Today’s birthdays include…
√ Musician / recording artist BUDDY MONDLOCK.
√ WILHELM C. ROENTGEN (1845), who, in 1895 at the age of 50, discovered x-rays, high-frequency short-wave rays produced by a stream of electrons. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1901. And today, units of exposure to x-rays are measured in Roentgens.
Now, YESTERDAY we missed some key birthdays. So belated happy birthday to:
√ KELLY ZIRBES aka “KELLY Z” of the roadhouse blues band KELLY’S LOT.
√ American poet ROBERT FROST (1874) who did not attend school until the age of 12, but went on to earn the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943. And he recited an original poem at the Inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961, and was awarded the Congressional Medal by President Kennedy at the White House on March 26, 1962, on his 88th birthday.
√ SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR (1930) the first woman to serve on the US Supreme Court.

+
It’s Carlene Carter's first album of new recordings this decade, set for release April 8, and produced by Don Was and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. As the daughter of June Carter Cash and country music great Carl Smith, the granddaughter of Mother Maybelle Carter and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene says it has been her lifelong goal to make this record. The album revisits both classic Carter Family repertoire as well as original songs that relate to Carlene's connection with her musical and familial roots.

Willie Nelson guests on "Troublesome Waters" and Kris Kristofferson joins Carlene on "Black Jack David" while the unmistakable voice of Vince Gill is heard harmonizing on "Lonesome Valley 2003." "Blackie's Gunman" is a duet with Elizabeth Cook, whom Carlene calls her "adopted sister." Cook is heard on six of the album's twelve tracks. The participation of Lorrie Carter Bennett, daughter of Anita Carter, as well as Joe Breen, Carlene's husband, underscores the continuing Carter Family connective tissue that the album celebrates.

After a two-year hiatus, singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson is back with a new album, her fifth, and a studio album titled “Lights Out,” which gets released April 15 (but will be available at this event). She’s come a long way since her first platinum break-out single, “The Way I Am,” was released seven years ago. Her past records have always been written only by Michaelson herself, with one producer, recording in one location. For this new album, Michaelson decided it was time to take a risk and branch out of her comfort zone. She recorded “Lights Out” in Los Angeles, New York and Nashville, alongside six different producers and ten respectable co-writers, including the talented Katie Herzig, Mat Kearney, Trent Dabbs, A Great Big World, and Busbee (Katy Perry, Pink, Lady Antebellum.) Her most personal album to date, Michaelson didn’t hold back, drawing inspiration from the darkest moments of her life over the past couple of years. The result? An intense and thoughtful piece of work. Hosted by Vice President of The GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Scott Goldman, the evening will feature both an interview with Michaelson and a performance. “Energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating fiddling and dazzling step dancing” is the short description. Seeing them, you’ll have much more to say.
+
April Verch has never sounded more comfortable in her skin than she does now, in the second decade of her career as an internationally touring Canadian fiddler, step dancer and singer-songwriter. Her ninth album, Bright Like Gold, captures a woman who’s fleshed out her identity and is in full command of her gifts, a woman who’s grown from a prodigy into an enduring artist—one of music’s most unforgiving public transitions — with grace and grit to spare.
+
She’s of a generation far more likely to have spent its formative years taking in MTV than taking part in any sort of traditional music scene, and yet practically from birth she was immersed in folk music and dance from her native Ottawa Valley, a melting pot of Franco-Celtic flavors brought by the hard-working loggers who settled the area. The April Verch Band — rounded out by bassist and clawhammer banjo player Cody Walters and guitarist Hayes Griffin, who has a Masters in jazz improv from the New England Conservatory—is an energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating outfit, not to mention one that’s not soon forgotten when they depart the stage.

It doesn’t hurt that the thrilling grand finale involves Verch fiddling and step dancing — and often executing two entirely different intricate rhythmic patterns — at once.

+
Yep. True stories about getting around Los Angeles, told by people who don’t drive. We do exist. Ask the staff of the Acoustic Americana Music Guide. Tonight, you’ll hear tales of freaks, creeps and rock and roll stars riding the buses and trains of Los Angeles. These true stories are told by comedians, musicians, writers and other public transit miscreants, and they will make you laugh and / or freak you out. Samples? Scott Schultz, the host: “Proud to say that I haven’t driven since 2006.” Dean Haglund: “X-Files or the Los Angeles Metro system, which has weirder characters?” “Of course, this Lone Gunmen rides the bus!” ~ Buck Ball, Southern storyteller and comedian from Mississippi. “I Bet riding the #4 bus for the first time was a culture shock!” ~ Anonymous Cool Chick, too cool for the marquee, but not for the bus. Daiana Feuer: “I think she has a car now, but if you follow her be careful, she also has a band called Bloody Death Skull.” And Eddie Solis is the host of Los Angeles Nista and singer of the Hardcore LA Transit Band.

Thu, Mar 27, in Altadena:
8 pm WILL RYAN & THE CACTUS COUNTY COWBOYS plus THE SEGUARO SISTERS at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N Lake Av, Altadena.
+
There simply is no better way, or place, to celebrate “NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY,” which is today – supposedly officially proclaimed (someplace).
+
Will Ryan (Gold Records) has the best unknown band of hugely accomplished individual musicians in all of L.A. Seriously. They are “The Official Singing Cowboy Band of Hollywood.”
+
Venue impresario Bob Stane most recently describes them as “Big Band stuff with outstanding humor. Tongue-in-cheek flavor of the West.” That’s part of it. They’re more like a 1930s movie studio band that played soundtracks for all the cantina scenes in the western movies. And with originals that have thoroughly modern relevance, like the comedic “Ding Dong Daddy of Abu Dabai,” about how warped we are over oil. Two of their members have logged over 60,000 performances at Disneyland. One has a GRAMMY. What else do you want to know? Except that THE SEGUARO SISTERS, who debuted here with them last month, had the house on its feet cheering. Wear your cowboy hat. Or not. But give your horse a scoop from the bag of good oats, and go.
+
To celebrate “NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY,” WILL RYAN presents what he’s calling, “2014’s Big Salute to NATIONAL SINGING COWGIRLS DAY” show.
+
WILL RYAN, winner of 2 Gold Records, BMI’s Pioneer Award for songwriting, featured in multiple Oscar-nominated films, and self-styled “King of the Radio Cowboys,” is joined by “CHAPARRAL KATIE” CAVERA, the band’s “Mona Lisa of Melody, the Garbo of the Banjo, the Helen of Troy of Western Skiffle,” plus WESTY WESTENHOFER, their “Maharajah of Musical Mirth, the Yo-Yo Ma of the Tuba,” and JOHN “PRESTO” REYNOLDS, “Prince of the Plectrum, The Grand Kahuna of the Git-Tar.” (If Will is that creative with simple promotion, you can imagine the superior quality of his songwriting.)
+
Plus, THE SAGUARO SISTERS, Southern California’s newest musical sensation, the ensemble of SHONA, KATRIONA and KARONA. Maybe you’ve heard their singing (every week!) on Pacifica Radio, or caught their acting on the syndicated series “Adventures in Odyssey.” Or maybe you’ve read about them in Club House Magazine. See ‘em an’ hear ‘em in person, and delight to soaring Western Skiffle harmonies with” the most runcible repertoire in the West!” (A Will Ryan quote, and we don’t know what “runcible” means, either.) Johnny Crawford (son of “The Rifleman”) calls the Saguaro Sisters “The greatest new vocal sound West of the Great Divide!”
+
Plus, joining the band for ONE NIGHT ONLY, from the Dick Van Dyke Show, it’s BARBARA PERRY, who played “Pickles” on the classic series (and many other characters on other shows, including Daniel Boone, Wyatt Earp, Andy Griffith Show, Perry Mason, My Three Sons, Bewitched, How I met Your Mother, and more.)

Thu, Mar 27, in Hollywood:
8 pm LINDA PERHACS plus opening act JIM CAMACHOplay the “Hollywood Forever Presents” concert series in the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
+
Writing of LINDA PERHACS, the promo notes in a roundabout way, “Sometimes it seems as if the world is full of Great Lost Records. Every few weeks, a diligent and adventurous label will uncover some neglected album from the cusp of the ’60s and ’70s and present it as a true classic. Many of these records are pretty good, and act as testament to the creativity and fecundity of the music scene in America back then. Few of them, however, have a really enduring afterlife: following the miracle of rediscovery, most recede into a new kind of limbo, in the shape of a lavishly annotated CD package rather than as dusty, overpriced vinyl. LINDA PERHACS’ ‘Parallelograms’ is one of those exceptions that proves the rule; the American equivalent to Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Just Another Diamond Day.’
+
“An uncanny mix of Aquarian folk and ethereal, avant-garde treatments, ‘Parallelograms’ was created in the heart of hippy country, L.A.’s Topanga Canyon, by a dental hygienist who was inspired by nature and by the cultural revolution going on around her. “
‘I’m not a drug user,’ she says now, still living on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. ‘I never was in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but I loved those people because they were dealing with energies, and our conversation level would be very deep. I’m deeply intuitive, I see and hear things the average person might not experience.’
+
“’Parallelograms’ was produced by one of Perhacs’ dental clients, Leonard Rosenmann, a film composer who had written the scores for ‘Rebel Without A Cause’ and ‘Barry Lyndon.’ Over nine months, with a host of experienced players on call – ‘I felt like a street urchin being schooled by Picasso,’ she says – Rosenmann fleshed out Perhacs’ astonishing and intuitive musical vision.
+
“When ‘Parallelograms’ was finished, it sounded like a masterpiece, but the Kapp label pressed it so badly that, Perhacs says, ‘I could only bear to listen to it once. I then threw my copy of my own record away.’ Promotion was negligible, sales non-existent. Obscurity beckoned.
+
“In the internet age, though, obscurity can be discreetly transformed into a kind of niche immortality. As the 21st Century began, and Perhacs recovered from a grim bout of pneumonia, she learned that ‘Parallelograms’ had become a cult album. A CD reissue on The Wild Places imprint followed in 2003, but Perhacs’ reputation only continued to grow. Devendra Banhart was particularly evangelical, and tempted Perhacs back into a studio in 2007 to provide backing vocals on his reconstruction of the vintage Topanga vibe, ‘Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon.’ Disparate and unlikely fans revealed themselves: Swedish death metal group Opeth covered ‘Parallelograms;’ Daft Punk placed ‘If You Were My Man’ in their Electroma movie.
+
“’I first bought Parallelograms on vinyl when I was in New York on tour,’ remembers Ramona Gonzalez of the L.A. group Nite Jewel. ‘I carried it under my arm to a crowded party, shut the door to the room that had a turntable, turned it on, and laid on the ground. I probably listened to it a dozen times while tears filled my eyes.’
+
“And slowly, Perhacs began making music again. In 2010, she performed live for the very first time, at a tribute show (organized by the internet radio station, Dublab) that connected her to a new generation of L.A. musicians supernaturally attuned to her vision. ‘I never personally wanted to be the center of attention, with all that pressure on you,’ she says. ‘I didn’t need it for any personal reason. But I got hooked when I did the show for Dublab. On the Food Channel nowadays, they mix spices from all parts of the world. There are no limits, and that’s how I felt when I met all these young artists. I wanted more.’
+
“Perhacs fell into auspicious and hip young company, tentatively negotiating a return to musical activity with the help of Gonzalez and Julia Holter. Inspiration came, too, from listening to ‘Francisco,’ a Milton Nascimento song that Devendra Banhart had passed on to her, and from watching ‘Inside Björk,’ a documentary which showed the Icelandic singer escaping from the pressures of performance by sailing up close to a majestic iceberg.
+
“Fittingly, though, it was one of Perhacs’ own spiritual experiences in nature that proved the catalyst for resolving all her ideas into a new album. On May 20, 2012, she watched a solar eclipse from her bedroom window. ‘I was just overwhelmed by the beauty,’ she recalls. ‘A whole new song concept poured into me, faster than I could write it down. I settled down afterwards, and I had all these scattered pages in front of me. For weeks afterwards I kept trying to find an hour in my busy schedule to put the pieces together, but nothing felt right. One day I was frustrated, because I had to get back to responsibilities and the workaday world, and I went to that same window and I said, ‘God, this is never going to happen unless I find someone to help me. I need a full arranger, I need good recording capability close to home, these concepts come into my head faster than I can catch them and arrange them.’
+
“’Two days later this email came through from Fernando Perdomo. I get a lot of messages but something said, ‘Answer that email right away.’
+
“Perdomo, it transpired, was a skilled musician and producer who’d just moved from Florida into Perhacs’ LA neighborhood. Along with another dedicated and gifted Perhacs fan, Chris Price, the trio began recording the eclipse song, ‘River Of God,’ and what became the new album’s title track, ‘The Soul of All Natural Things.’ It’s a remarkable follow-up album, one that sustains and extends the aesthetic mission of its 43-year-old predecessor. Julia Holter and Ramona Gonzalez contribute, too, on a set of 12 new songs which Mojo has already called ‘a spectrally hypnotic work of prismatic beauty.’
+
“’Linda is a fierce and disciplined, yet open-minded, visionary,’ says Holter. ‘She’s probably a musical virtuoso, with an incredible vocal range and a discerning ear, and she likes to try out different sets of harmonies and wild timbres. But she always has a story to tell and takes the message as seriously as the music.’ As a consequence, ‘The Soul of All Natural Things,’ for all its apparent serenity, is also a subtly polemical album, full of exhortations to take a step out of our frantic everyday lives. ‘We get too far out of balance and we must find a way to get back to our polestar,’ Perhacs says. ‘I felt that people needed to be reminded of that. My music isn’t just recreational, it’s not just entertainment. I have a deeper purpose. My soul is giving itself to the people; I want them to be helped, I want them to be lifted. If you follow a fad, it’s very temporary. If you center yourself in something that is eons old, you line yourself up with the highest vibrations in the universe: more light within, more inspiration within, more love within.’
+
“Lofty aspirations, perhaps, but they typify this new age of Linda Perhacs’ music. ‘Linda,’ says Sufjan Stevens, who is releasing ‘The Soul of All Natural Things’ on his Asthmatic Kitty label, ‘has a prophetic voice that speaks beauty and truth with the kind of confidence and hope that has been lost for decades. There is nothing more real in music today.’”
