Jam-packed Saturday: Irish Fest; big tribute to Pete Seeger; Ross Altman's live performance-interview; some annual events; & a whole lot more ~ March 8 2014

.
Saturday deserves its own edition.

Absolutely, positively, do NOT sit home Saturday. If you can’t find something wonderful to do amidst all that we bring you in this edition, your friends will decide you’re as hopeless as the guy in the ad for dumping cable and getting satellite. Don’t get body-slammed by a lowland gorilla. Get out and enjoy the FREE South Pasadena Arts Crawl, or the unbelievably cheap admission to the Irish Fest, or any of dozens of other wunnerful things that await within.

Seriously, go see one of these shows. And we aren’t listing “top picks” because almost everything in here would just be repeated in that list. Start scrolling and you’ll see what we mean.

March 8th in History…

√  Today is “INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY,” if you know any international women…

√  And it’s the birthday, in 1454, of AMERIGO VESPUCCI, the guy whose first name was awarded to the New World. That was, of course, an accident, when a sixteenth century German mapmaker wrongly attributed Amerigo Vespucci with discovering the Americas, and named the continents for him: Amerigo ~ Americas. To think, we could just as easily have been the Columbians – or the Vespuccians – or just “those illegal immigrants” who brought smallpox from Europe.

+
The Southern California folk icon will talk and sing about his work, folk music, and the creative process – and how it all melds into his personal mission in the music.
+
Decades ago, self-described “Singer-Songfighter” ROSS ALTMAN traded his professorship for a life as a political folk singer and music historian of the old and new left. Beyond that, where do you start to describe and define him?
+
With a PhD in Modern Literature from SUNY-Binghamton, he was honored with the Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest 2010 “Music Legend Award,” given annually to just one person. Ross is a member of Local 47 of the Musician’s Union (AFL-CIO), a columnist and staff writer for FolkWorks (www.folkworks.org), and he serves as President of the Santa Monica Traditional Folk Music Club.
+
For the Ash Grove’s 50th anniversary celebration at UCLA, Ross performed with Guy Carawan (the folk singer who helped transform “We Shall Overcome” into the civil rights anthem we know today); at the House of Blues, Ross sang his song “Tiananmen Square” for the 20th anniversary observance of the June 4,1989 massacre of students protesting for democracy; in 2012, Ross performed two shows to celebrate the Woody Guthrie Centennial, one at the Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival on May 20 and one at the Pasadena Public Library; in 2013, Ross celebrated the 50th anniversary of the musical legacy of the great Civil Rights March on Washington — again at the Topanga Banjo-Contest and Folk Festival and at the Pasadena Public Library.
+
Ross Altman is a recording artist for his own label — Grey Goose Music — with twelve albums to his credit. In the spirit of journalism icon H.L. Mencken, Ross writes and sings songs “to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable.”
+
Ross is famous all over town, at venues that range from the Talking Stick, Beyond Baroque, Sunset Hall (“Retirement home for ageless radicals”) and the UnUrban, where he will sit for this afternoon’s interview, which happens to fall on “International Women's Day,” an irony not lost on interviewer Gerry Fialka. Ross promises to sing “Aunt Molly Jackson” for the blacklisted Harlan County coal mining organizer, folk singer and author of “I Am a Union Woman.” Come out to hear everything you wanted to know about a folk singer who gave up the comfortable academic life to walk the walk, as well as to talk athe talk and sing the songs that got others walking for racial and social and political justice and equality. This promises to be an enlightening and no-holds-barred interview about major and little-known pieces of history.

Then, says Smith, “Hometown heroes THE LANDIA BAND take it all up a notch with the throbbing, pounding pulse of life itself, unleashing a moving, grooving semi-acoustic torrent of glorious noise that somehow merges smart, savvy and always compassionate songcraft with unapologetically chunky funky rhythm and razor sharp riffage of the first degree. Sat, Mar 8, in SFV (North Hills):
8 pm  EMMA’S REVOLUTION, the DC-based, award-winning women activist performing songwriter duo, plays the “50th Anniversary Celebration Concert” at the Onion, the Valley Unitarian Universalist  church, 9550 Haskell Av, North Hills.
+
They’ve been called “Smart, funny and informative -- like Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart with guitars.” Tonight, it’s Emma's Revolution with keyboardist Gary Johnson and drummer David Rokeach, playing the five-decade celebration concert for the the Onion.
+
“With gorgeous close harmonies and unsinkable tunefulness, Emma’s Revolution (the Emma is Goldman) is a classic, globetrotting folk duo comprised of activist singer-songwriters Sandy O and Pat Humphries. Their music is progressive, socially-conscious, confrontational and shot-through with intelligence and cutting humor. Newest disc 'Revolutions Per Minute' is a front-to-back gem.” ~ Iowa City Press-Citizen.
+
Called “inspiring, gusty and rockin’”, emma's revolution' songs have been sung for the Dalai Lama, praised by Pete Seeger and covered by Holly Near. The duo's awards include Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and, for the second year in a row, the Washington Area Music Association's Fan Favorite Award. "Revolutions Per Minute" is Emma's Revolution's third and latest recording.
+
The Emma's Revolution's song, "Peace, Salaam, Shalom" has been chosen for the new hymnal of a worldwide denomination. Out of the hymnal's 600+ songs, Community of Christ has selected "Peace, Salaam, Shalom" to be taught to its 250,000 members worldwide and has created "Peace Through All People", a stunningly beautiful and moving video of congregants and friends from Australia to Zambia singing "Peace, Salaam, Shalom". The video already has more than 10,000 views.
+
What’s with the 50th anniversary celebration? Valley Unitarian U says, "The spark of our congregation’s progressive spiritual history was kindled over 65 years ago in 1943 with the founding of the United Liberal Church of the Valley which became the People’s Church of the San Fernando Valley, and renamed the Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in 1956. Our beautiful and unique Onion dome, designed by acclaimed architect Frank Ehrenthal, was sited in 1961 on the current grounds of a former 5-acre horse ranch. We have been at home here for over 45 years. For decades, the Onion has been a beacon for social activism and cultural engagement in the San Fernando Valley. In 2010, the Los Angeles City Council declared our sanctuary an Historic-Cultural Monument. For over 60 years the light of our liberal faith has burned bright welcoming one and all."

At a time when national fame, fortune and reputation are often awarded to performers of pedestrian and limited talents and abilities, it is wholly refreshing to encounter an artist whose work -- often grossly under-recognized -possesses a genius that cannot be denied, ignored or overlooked. Johnsmith is one such artist; a gifted singer-songwriter, moving performer and roaming troubadour.

Above all else, Johnsmith is a Bard. The role of the Bard in every society is to hold up a mirror to that society, to convey and reveal -- through the mysterious alchemy of music and words and performance -- the secret inner language of the heart - delivered with that ineffable feeling called "Soul."
