Tuesday and Wednesday in history …

In addition to MARDI GRAS falling this year on March 4, there’s more.

March 4 in history is…

√  The birthday of Texas Governor RICK PERRY. It’s also the officially-proclaimed “HOLY EXPERIMENT DAY,” and "NATIONAL PANCAKE DAY," followed on March 5 by the officially-proclaimed “MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES DAY.” No word on when the “I can’t remember the third one. Whoops” Day is.

√  The day in 1913 that Congress created the US DEPARTMENT OF LABOR to protect the rights and interests of the American worker. (On this 101st anniversary, what a shame they’ve forgotten how to do that.)

√  The day in 1791 that Vermont became the fourteenth state – the first added after the original 13. Today, we celebrate Vermont as the home state of Independent US Senator BERNIE SANDERS.

= + = + = + = + = + = + =

March 5 in history is…

√  The day in 1770 that the infamous BOSTON MASSACRE occurred, helping to propel the American Revolution. The shooting of civilian protestors by British soldiers would echo in modern times almost exactly 200 years later when armed National Guard troops shot and killed students at Kent State University in Ohio.

1)  SOUTHERN LOUISIANAN ROD MELANCON HAS A CD RELEASE TODAY

He’s a singer-songwriter in the tradition of Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Bruce Springsteen. Rod Melancon is a native of Southern Louisiana, so there are plenty of influences vying for attention. As scribe Terry Roland wrote on the “No Depression” site, “Today he may be marked ‘Americana,' but make no mistake; he is country to the bone.”
+
“Parish Lines,” Rod Melancon’s new album on Medina River Records, releases today, March 4, 2014. It was produced by Brian Whelan (multi-instrumentalist and vocalist for Dwight Yoakam).

Los Angeles has played a significant role in the history of country music, which is often ignored – even after the “Bakersfield Sound” solidly moved here and took up residence. Through it all, the city has never stopped producing first-rate, unsurpassed country and Americana music. With its recent move from San Antonio to L.A., Medina River Records plans to unearth a myriad of gems and bring these independent talents to the forefront of the Americana music scene.

The Guide’s March 1 edition featured a write-up for “Americana music label ‘MEDINA RIVER RECORDS LAUNCH PARTY’ showcasing new CDs by their artists ROD MELANCON and THE FAR WEST, and also on the bill, JOHNNY La ROCHA, THE WALCOTTS, and CALICO THE BAND, at the Satellite,” in Silverlake (L.A.).

√  NEW RELEASES out today: BILL EMERSON & SWEET DIXIE, “DANCIN' ANNIE,” and JIM & JESSE and the VIRGINIA BOYS, “RADIO SHOWS,” on RURAL RHYTHM

(Nashville, TN, March 4, 2014) - Rural Rhythm Records today released two albums, BILL EMERSON & SWEET DIXIE, “DANCIN’ ANNIE,” and JIM & JESSE and the VIRGINIA BOYS, “RADIO SHOWS.”

“DANCIN’ ANNIE” is BILL EMERSON’s fourth album on the label, which also includes his solo album “ECLIPSE” from 2011. The new album contains twelve songs, including two new originals by renowned bluegrass and country songwriters Pete Goble and Leroy Drumm – “Days When You Were Mine”, and “This Heart You Have Broken.” They join Bill Emerson’s instrumental “State Line Ride,” “He Knows My Name” by Rob Mills, “Two Hands on the Wheel” by Nancy Pate, and two songs from band members of SWEET DIXIE, “Dancin’ Annie,” by Chris Stifel, the album’s first single, and “Whistle Stop” by Wayne Lanham.

Called a “Banjo Legend” by no less than the Washington Post, BILL EMERSON is certainly one of the most influential musicians in bluegrass music, and he certainly shines along with his SWEET DIXIE group on their new single, “Dancin’ Annie.”

“Bill Emerson embodies the best of what bluegrass music is all about. ‘Dancin' Annie’ couples Bill's precise, crisp banjo playing with soulful vocals to give the listener nearly three minutes of bluegrass perfection. It's excellent!” ~ Kyle Cantrell, SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction.

Indeed, “DANCIN’ ANNIE” is an acoustic blend of traditional and contemporary bluegrass, classic country, dynamic instrumentals, and rich gospel songs, featuring three distinct lead singers – Chris Stifel, Teri Chism and Wayne Lanham.

“DANCIN’ ANNIE is available on Amazon and wherever CDs are sold, and the digital album is available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital suppliers.

The label has a second release today, too.

The Guide ran a News Feature in our February 27 edition, “JESSE McREYNOLDS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AS MEMBER OF THE GRAND OLE OPRY ®.” There’s much more there. Briefly:

Bluegrass Legends JIM & JESSE are celebrating 50 Years as members of the GRAND OLE OPRY this year. The success of their ’60s radio shows prompted Martha White Flour to bring them to Nashville to star on their early morning show on WSM. In 1964 a life time dream came true for Jim & Jesse when they became regular members of the GRAND OLE OPRY.

Originally released in 1978 as a two-record set on the Old Dominion label, “RADIO SHOWS” was recorded in 1962 and contained mainly songs never before recorded by JIM & JESSE and the VIRGINIA BOYS, and were selected because of the heavy requests for them on their radio shows.

Produced by Jesse McReynolds and Gordon Reid, “RADIO SHOWS” contains 24 songs on one compact disc, re-mastered from the original master tapes with performances by JIM & JESSE McREYNOLDS, ALLEN SHELTON, JIM BUCHANAN, DON McHAN, and DAVID SOUTHERLAND.

A special added-value feature to the album includes online access to a Jesse McReynolds video interview reminiscing about the “RADIO SHOWS” album and era, as well as exclusive photos from his private collection during that wonderful period in the lives of Jim & Jesse.

Jim & Jesse recorded and released many albums on the Old Dominion label dating back to the early ’70s.

Rural Rhythm will be making these albums available for Jim & Jesse fans to enjoy again and bring their music to a whole new generation of Bluegrass & Country music fans.

“RADIO SONGS” is available on Amazon and wherever CDs are sold. The digital album is available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital suppliers.

√  BRANDON CHASE, Rising Star, Debuts Single "One," on Texas TV & Country Radio

by Tiffany Bearden

"A breezy slice of folk and rock-tinged country, the sweet, engaging 'One' marks Brandon Chase as not only a hopeless romantic, but an impressive Nashville talent worth keeping an eye on." ~ Preston Jones, Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

(Nashville, TN, March 4, 2014) - Rising star and “The Voice” Season 5 contestant BRANDON CHASE officially releases his debut single, "One," to country radio today. The single, written by Zach Crowell (Cop Car), Randy Montana and Jaron Boyer, scored an early spin on 99.5 The Wolf in Dallas last week, and many other stations are slated to follow suit. Brandon Chase has been working on developing his sound and style for many years and "One," the catchy sing-along song with infectious beats, is the perfect introduction to his artistic abilities.

"I’ve been waiting for this day for so long. I can’t believe it’s already here," exclaims Brandon Chase. "This song is the product of many long hours of hard work and I couldn’t be more proud of it. I hope the fans love it."

Early approval for Brandon Chase and his debut single is rolling in from media across the country. We’ll get to that in a moment.

Brandon Chase is nothing shy of a miracle. Only a few days old, Brandon quit breathing 64 times in 12 hours and his parents were told by doctors he could be deaf, blind, mentally impaired, or possibly all three. Not only did the Arlington, Texas, native not suffer any complications from his childhood, he instead went on to graduate high school at the age of 15, and then complete his Masters certificate in songwriting from Berklee College of Music at the age of 17. Brandon taught himself how to play the piano and guitar and has been writing his own original music since he was 14. He was featured on iTunes "New and Noteworthy" and also "Rising Stars of Country," following the release of his latest EP “Country Enough.”

Along with performing live on TV’s "Good Morning Texas" today (link is below), his most recent achievement was appearing multiple times on season 5 of NBC's “The Voice” as a member of Blake Shelton's team. Brandon, who bills himself as a country music artist, is currently recording new music set to release in 2014. His debut single, "One," hit country radio today.

"Brandon Chase is going to be an artist to watch that didn't NEED a "Voice" win... his first single, "One," keeps us on the road of country music’s ever-evolving sound, while giving us a song we LOVE to sing along to on the radio. We here at the Wolf in Dallas consider him a hometown hero as we've watched his journey so far, thrilled to be the first station to play, "ONE!" A true Gentleman for Country Music, too!" ~ Lisa Taylor, 99.5 The Wolf Dallas.

"I've seen Brandon's inestimable talents in action on stage and in the studio. He exemplifies country music TODAY with his authenticity, attitude and style. In the studio his work-ethic and skill-set are prodigious. When the world experiences his debut single 'ONE,' these qualities will be undeniable. I can't wait to see Brandon Chase's continued personal and professional accomplishments. Country Music's historic momentum continues and artists like Brandon Chase keep it flourishing!" ~ Ryan Drean, TM Studios / Westwood One.

"Brandon Chase is one of the most grounded artists to hit the scene in the past decade. He possesses a unique magnetism that shines through his music. His new single, 'One,' shows off his clear vocals coupled with a catchy hook and a relatable message. Brandon is definitely one to watch in 2014." ~ Kim Hooker, CMChat / Hooked Up Country.

"Brandon Chase was the new star of CRS 2014 for me. Top priority is breaking him in my market!" ~ Ryan McCall, WGLR.

"Brandon Chase is a talented vocalist who delivered a brilliant debut single. Definitely one to watch." ~ Matt Bjorke, Roughstock.

"One" features world-class musicians, including Lester Estelle (Kelly Clarkson, Big & Rich, others), Trey Hill (Big & Rich), Brian Nutter (Keith Urban), and Sam Hunter & Peter Keys (Lynyrd Skynrd). The single was produced by Sean Giovanni (Big & Rich, The Farm) of The Record Shop.

√  THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME ® AND MUSEUM’S “ALL FOR THE HALL” FUNDRAISER RETURNS TO LOS ANGELES MARCH 4

The Guide brought you Ticket Alerts in time to be able to attend. Now, we’ll make you wish you were there tonight.

Country Music Hall of Fame Members VINCE GILL and EMMYLOU HARRIS, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Members HEART, and Grammy Award-Winning Artist JASON MRAZ will headline tonight at Club Nokia / LA Live, with acclaimed actress / singer / film producer RITA WILSON as the emcee.

The Country Music Hall of Fame ® and Museum’s “All for the Hall” fundraiser is back in Los Angeles for the first time in nearly three years. The event will again follow a “guitar pull” format. The evening is a unique opportunity to see these acclaimed singer-songwriters interact with one another as they take turns swapping songs, stories and personal recollections. With Gill and Harris anchoring the lineup, new special guests each year ensure that each year’s event is “one-of-a-kind.” Past participants have included Jason Aldean, Gregg Allman, Zac Brown, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Patty Griffin, Levon Helm, Chris Isaak, Kris Kristofferson, Pat Monahan, Lionel Richie, Taylor Swift, and Dwight Yoakam.

The “guitar pull” is a Nashville specialty. It originated in the homes of Nashville songwriters who gathered to try-out new compositions for their peers. Nashville’s most storied guitar pulls were hosted by Johnny and June Carter Cash. The hallmarks of a great guitar pull quickly became spontaneity and camaraderie.

The museum launched “All for the Hall,” as its first-ever non-bricks-and-mortar fundraising campaign, in 2005, to address the museum’s need for long-term financial security. It continues to provide a safety net for the institution and its work, and this marks the seventh year the museum has taken its “annual giving” event on the road. Previous All for the Hall events were in New York in 2007, 2008 and 2013, and in Los Angeles, 2009 through 2011.

“California, with its rich country music history, has proven to be a supremely appropriate and welcoming location for this event,” said Museum Director Kyle Young. “In fact, some of the state’s contributions to our genre are the subject of our very popular limited-engagement exhibition, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and California Country, whose run we’ve extended through the end of 2014. Los Angeles has always given our All for the Hall event a very warm welcome, and we look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones in March.”

Last year’s event, held at the Best Buy Theater in New York City, featured performances by Gill and Harris, Jason Aldean, Gregg Allman, Rodney Crowell, Ashley Monroe, Pat Monahan and Joan Osborne. CMT’s Jim Allen wrote that “the evening was about the inspiration of the moment….Whether it was Gill digging into ‘Ring of Fire’ in honor of Johnny Cash’s birthday (joined by Harris and Crowell) or Aldean pitching in on both Allman’s ‘Midnight Rider’ and Monahan's Train smash ‘Drops of Jupiter,’ the artists were more concerned with following their noses than following a script.”

Now for the part that lets you know why you aren’t there. “All for the Hall Los Angeles” patrons were offered their choice of VIP tables of 10 for $25,000 or $10,000. Individual VIP tickets were available at $1,000 per seat. At these ticket levels, a cocktail reception and dinner will precede the guitar pull.

But there were more affordable seats, so we’ll bring you back to wishing you were there. Tickets for balcony seating (for the performance only) were priced at $125, $95, $65 and $49.50.

“All for the Hall Los Angeles” is chaired by BMI President and CEO Del Bryant and produced by CAA’s Rod Essig, Vector Management’s Ken Levitan and BMI’s Jody Williams. The event is made possible by the generosity of AEG Live and Club Nokia.

About the Performers

VINCE GILL is one of the industry’s most popular and most recorded superstar singers, known as a triple threat for his spellbinding vocals, emotionally powerful songwriting and world-class guitar-playing. Gill achieved his big breakthrough with “When I Call Your Name,” which won the Country Music Association’s Single of the Year Award in 1990. Since then, he has won 17 more CMA honors. Gill has received 20 Grammy Awards, sold more than 26 million albums, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. He is also a member of the Grand Ole Opry and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Additionally, he is a member of the Grammy-nominated the Time Jumpers; Rounder Records released the band’s first studio album last year. Gill’s high, pure tenor voice and unerring sense of harmony have caused dozens of artists—from Reba McEntire to Dolly Parton—to embrace him as a duet partner. Gill has established himself as one of the most successful guitarists of his generation. Combining a deep knowledge of bluegrass and classic country with the fire of ’60s rock, Gill has earned a place next to his musical heroes.

EMMYLOU HARRIS is a 13-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient whose career spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists’ recordings. Elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, she remains an inspiration to new generations of artists. Harris’ most recent album, a collaboration with Rodney Crowell, Old Yellow Moon, was released in 2013. In addition to music, Harris is a champion of many humanitarian causes, including landmine removal and animal rescue.

HEART, the band built around sisters ANN & NANCY WILSON, are 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Heart has sold more than 35 million albums and become part of the soundtrack of American life. The band stormed the charts in the ’70s with hits like “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man,” “Barracuda” and “Straight On,” and dominated the airwaves throughout the ’80s and early ’90s with smashes like “These Dreams,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” “Never” and more. The sisters have also achieved significant success as individuals: Ann’s solo hits include “Almost Paradise” from Footloose and “Surrender to Me” from Tequila Sunrise, while Nancy composed and performed the scores to a half dozen motion pictures including the award-winning films Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous. In September 2012, Ann and Nancy released their first-ever memoir (“Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll”).

JASON MRAZ has quietly amassed a youthful, diverse and vibrant global fan-base. His critically acclaimed live performances have propelled him from the San Diego coffeehouse circuit to amphitheaters, arenas, festivals and stadiums all over the world. Among other accolades, Mraz has won two major GRAMMY® Awards, a People’s Choice award and the Hal David Songwriter Hall Of Fame Award. He is among the most gifted and beloved artists of the modern era, making pop history with his record-breaking single, “I’m Yours,” which remained on the Billboard 100 longer than any other song in history. His releases have earned platinum and multi-platinum certifications in more than 20 countries. Moreover, the San Diego-based troubadour has proven a diverse creative presence, enjoying collaborations with Zac Brown, Crosby Stills & Nash, Hunter Hayes, Travie McCoy and others. A dedicated surfer, farmer-gardener, filmmaker and photographer, Mraz is first and foremost a committed global citizen. His impassioned social activism and philanthropic efforts span wide-ranging environmental advocacy and ardent support for LGBT equality. His global activism includes participating in a rescue mission to Ghana with Free the Slaves, and an internationally broadcast live performance in Myanmar to 70,000 people to bring awareness to human trafficking with MTV Exit. Through it all, Mraz continually confirms and celebrates music’s myriad forms and miraculous power, inspiring and delighting fans around the world.

RITA WILSON is well-known as an accomplished actress (“Sleepless in Seattle,” “It’s Complicated”) and film producer (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Mamma Mia!”), but few may be aware that her early show biz ambitions were actually musical. Born and raised in the Hollywood Hills, Wilson harbored dreams of becoming a singer in the ’60s and ’70s after falling in love with the Beatles, the Supremes, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Joni Mitchell, among many others. Wilson achieved her dream in May of 2012 with the Decca Records release of her debut album, “AM/FM,” an intimate, elegant and beautifully sung collection of classics from the ’60s and ’70s that, taken together, make up the soundtrack to her life. She chose songs for the album that resonated with her emotionally, achieving an album that is an extremely personal endeavor. The New York Times called it a “charming, nostalgic throwback to the soft rock of Los Angeles” and Rolling Stone said Wilson “has an expressive denim and suede soprano.”

The beneficiary of tonight’s benefit, the Country Music Hall of Fame ® and Museum, is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and operated by the Country Music Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization chartered by the state of Tennessee in 1964. The museum’s mission is the preservation of the history of country and related vernacular music rooted in southern culture. With the same educational mission, the foundation also operates CMF Records, the museum’s Frist Library and Archive, CMF Press, Historic RCA Studio B and Hatch Show Print ®.

The Guide brought you a Ticket Alert for this one weeks ago.
+
Whether fugitive, troubadour, misfit or crusader, California country music legend Merle Haggard has explored each perspective with a critical acuity, a hard-won skill that's allowed him to score no less than 40 number one country hits. Immediately embraced by country fans, Haggard also earned the respect of his peers. He has won just about every music award imaginable, both as a performer and as a songwriter, and in 2010 he was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in recognition for his lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts. His body of work easily places him beside Hank Williams as one of the most influential artists in country music.
+
Over a distinguished fifty year-plus career that's taken him from a drastically misspent criminal youth to solitary confinement in San Quentin to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Haggard has memorably portrayed, in song, myriad archetypal characters. After being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008 and having part of his lung removed, Haggard shows no signs of the disease returning and continues to produce songs and perform live with more energy and enthusiasm than many a younger man or woman.

La Santa Cecilia is accordionist and requintero Jose "Pepe" Carlos, bassist Alex Bendana, percussionist Miguel Ramirez, and lead vocalist La Marisoul, whose captivating voice sings about love, loss and heartbreak. Their influences range from Miles Davis to The Beatles, Zeppelin to Janis Joplin and Mercedes Sosa to Ramon Ayala. Their common love of music and openness to all genres led them to the concept of La Santa Cecilia in 2007 - named after the patron saint of musicians.
+
The band was signed in 2010 to indie label Rebeleon Music Group headed by multi-GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY winning producer Sebastian Krys. The band toured all over the United States and Mexico. They garnered the attention of Universal Music Latino in 2012 and subsequently signed with the label. In 2013, the band released their major label debut Treinta Dias (30 Days), which featured a captivating collaboration with fan Elvis Costello on "Losing Game."
+
This event comes just after their GRAMMY win and one day after the release of their first full-length album, “Someday New.” The album features seven new tracks, which include a heartfelt Spanglish rendition of The Beatles iconic "Strawberry Fields Forever", plus the unforgettable Mexican classic "Como Dios Manda"; as well as a fresh new radio-edit of "Monedita" and the full version of their moving, and militant "ICE - El Hielo."
