Legendary singer DION reports, “Susan and I will celebrate our 51st Wedding Anniversary March 25th. In the UK, when you're married 51 years, you receive a personal letter from the Queen of England. Here in the United States of America, I hear they're initiating a new custom –  You get a letter from the IRS.” The Guide cannot verify the veracity of that claim.

Tuesday Birthdays…

On this day in 1871, GUTZON BORGLUM was born to Danish parents in Idaho. He was the force behind the MT. RUSHMORE MEMORIAL in South Dakota, though he died in 1941 before its completion. And technically, it was never completed. Now, what of the man himself? Certainly a brilliant and gifted sculptor and artist. But was he a racist? It seems so, at least after seeking and getting the commission to carve the Confederate Memorial into Stone Mountain, Georgia. So we have the choice of viewing the monumental works in terms of themselves as singularly towering works of art, or tainting our sensibilities by exploring the inner nature of an artist from another time – a challenge presented by every dead artist.

√  PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED JOHNNY CASH ALBUM COMES OUT TODAY
Last month, fans of the late Johnny Cash celebrated what would have been his 82nd birthday. Tribute bands like Cash’d Out, One More Round, the Mighty Cash Cats, and the Walking Phoenixes played “Cash Bashes” all over the country. Today, March 25, they, and everyone else, has another reason to celebrate. The Cash estate is releasing “Out Among the Stars,” an album that Johnny Cash recorded in the early 1980s that was never released.

The album's songs were unearthed by the label and Cash's son John Carter Cash in 2012. It includes duets with both Waylon Jennings and June Carter Cash. Two tracks are credited as being written by Johnny Cash: "Call Your Mother" and "I Came to Believe".

√  “BLUE NOTE RECORDS EXHIBIT DEBUTS TODAY AT GRAMMY MUSEUM

Blue Note President DON WAS to attend opening at the GRAMMY Museum interview tonight will launch exhibition.

(LOS ANGELES) – Today, March 25, 2014, The GRAMMY Museum unveiled “Blue Note Records: The Finest In Jazz,” a new exhibition located in the Mike Curb Gallery on the Museum’s fourth floor. This one-of-a-kind exhibit on one of most-respected and longest-running Jazz labels in the world offers visitors an in-depth look at the legendary record label, currently celebrating their 75th anniversary.

The exhibition will remain on display daily through October 2014. Highlights of the exhibit include:

♪  original tape box from Rudy Van Gelder’s recording sessions
♪  Art Blakey’s snare drum
♪  handwritten lyrics & sheet music from various Blue Note artists, past and present

Blue Note Records, one of the most-respected and longest-running Jazz labels in the world, was founded when a German immigrant and passionate Jazz fan named Alfred Lion produced his first recording session on January 6, 1939 in New York City. Blue Note has gone on to represent “The Finest In Jazz,” tracing the entire history of the music from Hot Jazz, Boogie Woogie, and Swing, through Bebop, Hard Bop, Post Bop, Soul Jazz, Avant-Garde, and Fusion. Under the leadership of Bruce Lundvall, who reviveS Blue Note in 1984, and the label’s current President Don Was, who took the helm in 2012, the label has emphasized the may historic forms of jazz and numerous modern day incarnations.

In addition to the GRAMMY Museum exhibition, Blue Note is celebrating its 75th Anniversary throughout 2014 with a series of exciting live events. These began with a concert on January 8 as part of “NYC Winter Jazzfest” at The Town Hall in New York, featuring Robert Glasper and Jason Moran, two of the label’s leading artists. The label will also be honored or will itself celebrate with book releases, and various vinyl, CD, and digital catalog initiatives, as well as new releases from the label’s current artists.

Capitalizing on the “interactive” craze, Blue Note has launched a Facebook app that allows fans to put their own face into classic Blue Note cover artwork designs by Reid Miles.

At this evening’s launch, Blue Note President Don Was will participate in The GRAMMY Museum’s popular “An Evening With” public program series. Titled, “An Evening with Blue Note Records,” the event will be hosted by GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli as well as the curator of the exhibit, Nwaka Onwusa, and will include a candid interview with the veteran record producer and musician.

At tonight’s special event, guests will hear the stories behind the curation of the exhibit, and learn what’s next for the iconic label. √  GUITARIST / VOCALIST JIM OBLON’s NEW ALBUM, “SUNSET,” RELEASED TODAY

New album from PAUL SIMON Band member features legends JIM KELTNER and LARRY GOLDINGS

(Nashville, TN) Jim Oblon is one of those rare talents — a jaw-dropping guitarist, soulful singer and compelling writer. On “Sunset,” released today, March 25, Oblon’s virtuosic Telecaster-driven blues chops and vocals shine on a set of originals, vintage rock & roll, and country blues, all delivered in a neoclassic organ trio setting comprised of legendary session drummer Jim Keltner and renowned GRAMMY-winning organist / pianist Larry Goldings.

Oblon has gained national attention as guitarist, drummer, and vocalist in Paul Simon’s band as well as for his contributions on bass, drums and guitar to Simon’s latest album “So Beautiful or So What.”

Always a believer in the bigger musical picture, Oblon aims to expound upon the legacy of his forbearers without ever becoming an impersonator himself. “Today there’s a ‘blues scene’ with Brylcreem and bowling shirts, all the gear, but it doesn’t have the essence of music,” Oblon asserts. He continues, “I wanted to honor the people who came before me. Maybe I can add a few of my own things, but I want to not lose what was.”

“Sunset” is a showcase for all three musicians – Oblon, Keltner, and Goldings. The album was recorded with the trio playing together in one room. The energy and intensity created by this performance-style recording approach yields tracks that literally seem to pop off the disc. A blues-funk reworking of Little Richard’s “Lucille” gives each of the players a chance to stretch out and strut their inventiveness, musical depth and mastery, as well as their ability to put a fresh spin on an old classic.

Oblon’s soul shines on his two originals, the languid “Desert Sun” and the almost time-suspending instrumental title track, “Sunset.” And his plaintive telecaster, backed by Keltner’s bombastic rhythm bed, lends a particularly vibey feel to Lead Belly’s “When I Was a Cowboy 1911.”

Goldings, featured on piano on “Desert Sun” and “Railroad Bum,” uses the Fats Domino classic “Blueberry Hill” to illustrate why he is considered one of the best Hammond B3 players alive; he delivers a solo that makes you think he’s been waiting his whole life to play this tune.

Rock / session legend Jim Keltner’s performances stand out as almost a “Jim Keltner how-to”: propulsive, yet laid-back, rocking yet swinging, and rhythmically-percussive enough to make you swear there is more than one of him playing.

In 2011, Oblon released a Jim Morrison-esque recording of the traditional song “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” which was featured in last season’s finale of HBO’s hugely popular vampire drama “True Blood.” Oblon now lives in Nashville, where he’s a fast-rising guitarist on the session scene. His Tuesday night residency at fooBAR in East Nashville is becoming the buzz event of the week among musicians and those in the know. Whether you’re there to hear him or not, this is a welcome album.

Grammy-nominated bluegrass band SPECIAL CONSENSUS announced today in Nashville that they are preparing to release their guest-laden project featuring DALE ANN BRADLEY, JOHN COWAN, JIM LAUDERDALE, CLAIRE LYNCH, PETER ROWAN, RHONDA VINCENT, MICHAEL CLEVELAND, ALISON BROWN, and more.

Special Consensus is joining forces with contemporary bluegrass music's best on the new album, slated for release on March 25.

“There is a natural affinity between bluegrass musicians and John Denver's repertoire but this is the first purely bluegrass tribute to the iconic singer-songwriter who died in 1997,” says a spokesperson for the band.

“Country Boy” features Special Consensus at the musical center of each track, with a guest cast of Grammy-winning and International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA)-winning vocalists and instrumentalists joining-in. Produced by award-winning musician and Compass Records co-founder ALISON BROWN, the album’s 10 tracks draw from across Denver’s hits and lesser-known songs.

In talking about the genesis for the idea, band founder GREG CAHILL commented, “I’ve met so many people who were affected by John’s music and so many musicians who mention him as an inspiration. It felt like a bluegrass interpretation of his songs would be something really special and might also serve as a way to connect more people to bluegrass music.”

Compass Records tells us, “There is no question that the album achieves some special musical moments – both vocal and instrumental.”

SPECIAL CONSENSUS’ mandolinist RICK FARIS and reigning International Bluegrass Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year CLAIRE LYNCH share lead vocal duties on the album’s first track, ‘Wild Montana Skies,’ their vocal lines perfectly complemented by ROB ICKES’ Dobro. On ‘Country Roads,’ Special Consensus guitarist DUSTIN BENSON and the legendary JOHN COWAN swap verses against a tapestry of banjo and fiddle provided by GREG CAHILL and DEL McCOURY BAND fiddler JASON CARTER. And, in a surprise twist, SPECIAL CONSENSUS delivers an all-instrumental version of ‘Thank God I'm a Country Boy,’ with the twin fiddles of label mate MICHAEL CLEVELAND and session ace BUDDY SPICHER and the twin banjos of GREG CAHILL and ALISON BROWN.

The entire cast of featured guests includes Dale Ann Bradley, Jason Carter, Mike Cleveland, John Cowan, Rob Ickes, Jim Lauderdale, Claire Lynch, Peter Rowan, Buddy Spicher and Rhonda Vincent.

SPECIAL CONSENSUS, the motive power behind the project, was founded in 1975 by banjoist Greg Cahill as a showcase for his urban traditionalist take on bluegrass, which encompasses elements of Chicago blues, swing, newgrass, and country music. Over the ensuing 37 years, the group has seen a myriad of personnel changes and has been the breeding ground for some of the best young stars in bluegrass today, and Josh Williams, Chris Jones and Robbie Fulks are just a few names in a long list of former members who have gone on to build solo careers. Special Consensus maintains a busy year round touring schedule, reaching an eclectic demographic through appearances at festivals, listening rooms, “bluegrass in the schools” programs and symphony appearances. Their 2012 release, “Scratch Gravel Road,” achieved a Grammy-nomination for Best Bluegrass Album.
