March 22nd in History…

√  Today is the birthday of CNN journalist WOLF BLITZER.

√  It’s also “National Goof-off Day,” coming just a week after the combined “Buzzard’s Day” and “Everything You Think Is Wrong Day,” and today is just two days after the “Festival of Extraterrestrial Abductions Day,” and one day before the combined “National Organize Your Home Office Day” and “National Chip and Dip Day.” And yes, all those are officially proclaimed (somewhere).

Back by popular demand after a sold out enthusiastic debut, “The Testimony of a Negro” was invited for another engagement in a new venue. Directed by Ted Lange of TV’s ‘The Love Boat,’ the musical chores are executed handily by NAACP Theatre Award winning Musical Director, TC Campbell.

“The Testimony of a Negro” is an engaging and forensic examination of the evolution of Black history and the Negroes at its foundation. “This is a masterful piece of storytelling that I’m proud to be associated with” says Lange. “Before the last performance, I predicted that audiences would laugh, cry, reflect, remember and in the end, come away thoroughly entertained and enlightened. In listening to the audience response in the discussion that followed, that’s exactly what happened. It seems that I was right. Go figure?” He added, “It was a great show and as promised, Maurice nailed his performance.”

+
Kevin Burton Smith, “Butler’s Coffee Music Guy,” says, “You won't have to kiss a thousand frogs, smooch any comatose princesses or climb any particularly lengthy tresses to have a royally good time.
+
“Nope, all you've got to do is make your way to BUTLER'S COFFEE, the most jumpin' little java joint in the A-Valley, where we'll be presenting our version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
+
“It'll be an evening of singing and playing that'll rock you and set your heart a-soaring, as we present an evening featuring two of our favourite performers, MARK BURGESS and ANN-MARITA.
+
“Okay, so MARK BURGESS isn't REALLY a beast... At least until he straps on a guitar, and then he plays like some ungodly monster from the Netherworld, unleashing a Hell-raising blend of blistering slide blues, sweet-as-sin country pickin', Appalachian howls and who-let-the-dogs-out rock 'n' roll, capped with Knopleresque earthiness and Lou Reed cool. In other words, Mark pretty much can play anything he wants -- he studied classical guitar at The American Institute of Guitar in New York City, jazz guitar at Mason Gross School of the Arts, and with Robert Fripp of King Crimson, and has even written a book on playing, The Serious Guitarist. So Mark's not REALLY a beast... Still, those in the front row might consider toting along some crucifixes and silver bullets... you know, just in case...
+
“And then there's ANN-MARITA, who really is a beauty. From the inside out. Sings like an angel of the first degree, writes songs full of surprising grace and passion, and can pretty much charm the birds out of the tree. But don't mistake her for some Disney cartoon princess -- this is a real woman here, a Viking warrior singing the real woman blues, a soulful mix of sunny West Coast country rock and grass roots folk that recalls life in all its messy glory; songs of love and family and friendship and perseverence and heartbreak. It's Americana writ large, with nods to everyone from Dolly to Gladys Knight, and yet Ann-Marita remains always, uniquely, true to herself. She'll be playing selections from her new CD, The Purple Ribbon Sessions, as well as other goodies.
+
“It'll be great night, and you'll all live happily ever after...”

8 pm  CINDY MANGSEN & STEVE GILLETTE, two favorites from Missouri, play the Pasadena Folk Music Society, in “Little Beckman” on the Caltech campus in Pasadena; 626-395-4652; folkmusic@caltech.edu
+
The duo reports, “This time around, we'll be playing some old favorites, as well as selections from our new CD, ‘Berrymania.’”
+
The series producers tell us, “Steve and Cindy have consistently brought us great music in their every-other-year visits. Steve made a big splash very early in his career when he wrote the song, "Darcy Farrow," which was recorded by Ian and Sylvia at the height of their time together. The song, which is so timeless that it is thought by many to be an old traditional song, was later recorded by such performers as John Denver and Nanci Griffith.”
+
Steve has gone on to write many songs that have been recorded by other folks, including Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, Linda Ronstadt, Towns Van Zandt, and Jerry Jeff Walker. He's a songwriter's songwriter, and he still excels at it. You can hear him sing "Darcy Farrow," with some fine harmony by Cindy at:

He makes it look so easy and sound so fine.

Cindy Mangsen plays guitar, concertina, and banjo, and is known for her beautiful voice. Her version of "Two Sisters" is an excellent example of what she can do with these songs, at:

Cindy has an amazing and diverse set of skills. Consider her translation of a blurb story in the newspaper about a cat who got his head stuck in a garbage disposal and the events that ensued into the hilarious "Rudy's Big Adventure," at:

+
This could be the start of something big. Clearly, they have a great lineup for this first show. David Serby feels celebratory. He says, “Shine up your best boots and join us for a great evening of talent and camaraderie.”
+
Rick Shea & The Losin’ End -- Rick Shea is one of the best guitarist and songwriters in the country. He has played with many of the greats, including a long-time slot in Dave Alvin's band. He has a new record out, and the critics are raving about it.
+
David Serby and The Latest Scam -- David is having a record release party on this night. Grant Langston says, “I've made no secret of my belief that David is the best country music songwriter in LA. His new record is getting great press like this: ‘Each of these ten-track discs would have made a good album on their own, but together they show off a terrific continuum of pop, rock, country and a touch of the blues. Serby’s reach across country, folk and rock were evident in his earlier releases, but the pure pop side is a welcome surprise.’ Hyperbolium.”
+
Grant adds, Our mission is to restore California as a world capital of country and roots music (equal to TX and TN!) by producing shows that celebrate our past, promote our present, and inspire our future. We want to connect artists and fans to create musically authentic and emotionally meaningful experiences that foster a sense of community; and most of all, we want artists and fans share equally in the success of country and roots music in California.”

He continues, “We all love to complain about the sick and sad music business, but there are talented people making great music in your town. In fact, some of the best music in the country is being made in your town. However, like everything in this world we need you to vote with your feet and your wallet in order to help it get going and stay strong. Spending your Saturday night being entertained AND helping build a scene of music is a win, win, win. (Is that one too many ‘wins’-?).

“We're going to do a monthly show at T. Boyle's Tavern in Pasadena, and we're looking for other venues all over California to start shows that showcase the great roots music that California has to offer. We're confident that if we can offer great talent, in cool venues, with events, giveaways and other promotions we can help let the entire country know about the country and roots music that lives and thrives in California.
+
“We hope you can make the first one to see some killer California roots bands; buy some great California roots records and merch (California Roots Union Tee Shirts!); grab some cool giveaways (stickers and souvenir postcards), sign up to win a roots raffle or two, and hear about our plans and upcoming shows.
+
“Finally, we’ve got a lot of great plans for the CRU that we’ll be rolling out in the next couple of months.”
